At the end of the previous quest, Garadain mentioned his nephew.

You say, 'What nephew?'

Garadain Glacierbane says 'My nephew, Boridain, keeps running away from home to kill a bothersome [beast], thinking this will prove to all of Thurgadin that he is a great hunter. Every time he does this my sister gets hysterical and I am sent out to find him.'

You say, 'What beast?'

Garadain Glacierbane says 'A rabid tundra kodiak has been feeding on our people for weeks now. If Boridain ever stumbled across the critter I doubt he'd stand a chance. I have a solution, but it would require the [assistance] of an outsider.'

You say, 'I will give assistance.'

Garadain Glacierbane says 'I'm taking a liking to you stranger. Your eagerness to help us will not go unnoticed. Find my nephew and give him this axe. It should keep him from hurting himself. Return to me with the ring and proof that he is safe.'

You receive a Dull Bladed Axe. Take it to his nephew, Boridain Glacierbane, who spawns at -2450, +1550.

You say, 'Hail, Boridain Glacierbane'

Boridain Glacierbane says 'Hello stranger, I am Boridain, master hunter of the Coldain. Glad to meet you.'

Give him the axe.

Boridain Glacierbane says 'Say! This looks just like the axe my uncle uses. With this I can kill the beast for sure! Now please, be very quiet, I must track my prey. I won't return to Thurgadin without the hide of the rabid tundra kodiak!'

You must now follow him around and keep him alive while he hunts for the rabid tundra kodiak. He will go to certain dangerous locations such as the giant fort, the prison camp, and the Ry'gorr fort, before finally encountering the rabid kodiak. You must protect him from any aggressive monsters en route, as well as from any static spawns he finds in these locations. It's useful to duo with someone so one can fight the monsters ahead and one can protect Boridain.

Make sure you are the one to kill the kodiak and not Boridain, or the corpse will disappear. Once you have killed it, loot the Rabid Kodiak Skin and quickly give it to Boridain (he despawns within a minute or so). He will give you a Broken Axe, which you then turn in to Garadain along with your Copper Coldain Insignia Ring ring as proof of having aided his nephew.

Garadain Glacierbane says 'Excuse me, ______, aren't you forgetting something?'
Garadain Glacierbane says 'Well done friend! My nephew is safe at home and his thirst for adventure is quenched for now. The beast will claim no more of our people. I couldn't have handled it better myself. Now I can get back to the business of [hunting].'
Your faction standing with Coldain could not possibly get any better.
Your faction standing with Dain Frostreaver IV got better.
Your faction standing with Kromzek got worse.
Your faction standing with Kromrif could not possibly get any worse.
You gain experience!!

If Borridan dies
# Feb 04 2002 at 7:23 AM Rating: Decent
Did this quest with just 2 people, 51 Ranger and 51 Druid. I ran ahead to the Giant fort after giving the dwarf the axe. I simply kited the 3 giants guarding the door away and rooted them. With the entrance to the Giant Fort clear we went to the Giant Prison. Quiver, my ranger, used harmony on the dwarf, while I did the same to the Frost giant and the Rygorr prison guard. Borridan then walked back to his spawn point where the Rabid Kodiak spawned. It was light blue to me, and fell quickly, but before I could turn in the pelt we were jumped by two FGs. By the time we dealt with the nuissance Borridan had despawned. I went back to Garadain and said, "What assistance" and got another axe. When the dwarf respawned I gave him the axe, and then the pelt. Ta-dah! Note that you do NOT have to kill every mob in the Giant Fort and Prison, unless you want to.

After writing this up for my guild's messageboard I thought I would copy and post this here to help any others working on the rings... so please forgive the use of names and personal references.

Short version: 13 people levels 39-49, divided into 3 groups were successful. Overkill? Likely so, but made it comfortable and we all stayed busy.
_____

A huge thanks and congrats to Coaren, Tsuga, Merinu, Eluvandal, Trelor, Ghurka, Al, Fal, Shylee, Beralt, Kylora (QoH), and Riv (DC) for making our guild's first (to my knowledge anyway) Coldain ring event a success!!

For those unfamiliar with the coldain ring quest, it is the melee analogy to the Thurgadin shawl quests. There are 10 known consecutive ring quests, the first ring quest requires a tailoring skill and results in a Copper Coldain Ring, AC1, +1STR, +1SVMagic, aka the 1/1/1 ring. Last night we successfully completed the 2/2/2 ring quest.

For those interested in trying it, I posted some details in the post above, and will add comments from our experience here. The quick gist is that you must keep a moronic dwarf (Garadain's nephew, green at 45) alive while he plays out his fantasy of being a mighty hunter. He is ostensibly tracking down a rabid kodiak that has been preying upon his people, and tracks it all around the EW zone, first visiting the giant fort, then the prison, then ry'gorr fort, then returns to his spawn point where the bear pops just behind him.

Borridain spawns on a hilltop at approx loc N2500 P1500 just N of the Ry'gorr fort. This is a major crossroads for wandering mobs in the zone, with lots of Ry'gorr scouts, frost giants, dervs, and tough savage dire wolves wandering right past him. Luckily at this point the dwarf is non-aggro to all mobs, or he'd never be up more than 20 seconds.

I divided our 13 people into 3 groups, one to stay with the dwarf, one to clear out the entry pops for his next destination, and one to act as a sweeper primarily pulling wandering mobs out of the dwarf's path. This tactic seemed to work extremely well, and given the number of adds and the speed with which they need to be killed or kited, was about the right size to succeed (we had failed twice before just trying to use 1 group -- oh, and wolf form is KOS).

After clearing out all the wanderers in the area surrounding the dwarf, I dispatched groups 2 and 3 to clear the giant fort entry pops, as well as the roaming frost giant captain. These 2 tasks were the hardest part of the entire quest. The frost giant captain was tough, but was taken down with a bit of fear kiting. Meanwhile the first group had all they could handle keeping the wandering mobs near the dwarf spawn spot at bay. We had our only casualty (Al, who thereby made the raid official) at this stage, when Al kited two wandering frost giants out of the dwarf spawn area. Our other imperfection was tagging Eluvandal with negative Kromrif faction, as he was unable to zone in time to avoid a faction hit... sorry =(

At this point I turned my axe in to Borridain (say 'what assistance' to Garadain to get the axe, this follows dialogue subsequent to 1/1/1 ring quest), and he repops and immediately starts tracking W to the giant fort at N2000, P3000. I cast harmony on Borridain to keep his idiot self from aggroing on to any mobs that go too close. Even with the sweeper group we had to move a frost giant out of the way during this leg of the trip.

Borridain wandered right up and just into the gate of the frost giant fort (I was getting worried!) before he turned around and headed toward the prison at loc 0,0. Halfway there he sat down for a few minutes for a 'snack' break. This allowed the 2nd group to finish clearing the prison door pops. Turns out the dwarf didn't visit anything I considered a door pop here, but entered a broken wall section at the Southernmost point of the prison, which contained a giant and an orc that the sweeper group and our group expertly moved out of the way before the dwarf got there. I kept harmony on the little guy to make sure he didn't make things any more difficult than they already were by running off track to attack any of the mobs that were being moved.

Borridain then turned and headed South toward the main Ry'gorr fort at N3500 P500, once again taking a one-minute snack break along the way. This allowed time to med, and for the 2nd group to root their adds and relocate to the fort and clear door pops. Warning via /ooc to all those chars KOS to Coldain to please vacate the area temporarily, the dwarf wandered right through where folks usually camp the fort exterior, and waltzed into the fort entrance before turning around and heading back to his spawn point.

Once at his spawn point, he sat down and a Rabid Tundra Kodiak spawned (dark blue at 47) which I dispatched with Al's help (he had recovered from rez effects by this time). We both caught rabies from him, blech. I looted the dead bear's pelt, and turned it in to the sitting Borridain, who returned a 'broken axe' to me (said he broke it delivering the killing blow, lol) and depopped. I then turned in the broken axe and 1/1/1 ring to Garadain and received the 2/2/2 ring.

Yes, all that work for a 2AC, +2STR, +2SVMagic ring... but that's not the point! The event itself was a blast, and allowed us to show each other and the zone that we have the rare gift of close teamwork. The dwarf did not aggro or receive aggro the entire time, and I estimate 30 mobs were killed or moved before and during the dwarf's 15-minute excursion.
Plan

I had planned to just walk up and do it solo..a 57 SK with a 1080 ac and 2700 hp...why not?

Well...even with a 55 rouge it did not happen.

Clear the forts in advance.

Ginat fort was easy, although the dwarf almost died.

I got wiped at the orc fort trying with 2. Seely dwarf just walzes right up....was no time to FD pull, and even at 57 i got some 7 mobs on the pull.

My two cents.

i just walked up and did it solo - 50 ranger, not using harmony since the nerf, 874ac and 1600hp. figured i might as well give it a shot, if he dies, no big deal. try another time with two people, right?

giant fort - somebody was already killing there, no problem. got an FG wanderer on the way out, no problem.
jail - cursing the little fool the whole time, i finished off the giant and orc with about 1/4 life. his nap gave me time enough to heal.
ry'gorr fort - pulled the two front mobs before he got there, rooted one, killed them both, no problem.
rabid kodiak - fearkited kodiak, dead in under 2 min, bor had already poofed. i'll have to hand the pelt in tonight.
the three or four wanderers were annoying, but not threatening.

maybe i had an unfair advantage =/. farmed CC orcs until i had the cash for an ikky regen bp =D.
#REDACTED, Posted: Nov 20 2001 at 7:20 PM, Rating: Sub-Default, (Expand Post) ok guys, the info on this part of the quest SUCKS!. after exhaustive effort getting the DAMN tundra pelts and turning in the blanket, the damn dwarf will head STRAIGHT for the giant fort. No way in hell can 2 people protect him. I suggest having many people help with this part as the entire giant fort must be cleared, preferably in advanced. As for me, i am not willing to spend DAYS rehunting for the damn pelts. will find something else to go after.
RE: bad info
# Nov 27 2001 at 2:10 PM Rating: Decent
You do NOT need to clear the entire giant fort. You DO need to clear the two giants standing at the front of the fort. You will usually need to also clear out the frost giant captain that wanders up to the front of the fort.

Also, I don't understand why you would need to gather more pelts as the only thing you lose when triggering this quest is the axe you get by talking to Garadain. You don't need to hand in the ring until you have the broken axe back from Boridain.
RE: bad info
# Dec 31 2001 at 12:46 AM Rating: Good
You don't have to clear anything. Harmony works great. I've duoed this portion of the quest a few times, and harmony has always worked liked a champ. Just make sure to keep it cast on Boridain as well as the MOBs he'll encounter.
RE: bad info

I kept Boridain harmonied and the 2 fort guards, as well as the captain who wandered right to the front and he still engaged and killed Boridain. I suggest killing the 2 guards and the captain prior to hadning the axe to Bridain.

Wonder what the respawn time is on him... grr.
RE: bad info
# Apr 26 2002 at 9:06 PM Rating: Good
Did this solo as a 51 druid. He will engage the captain if he is standing in the middle of the gate as he walks to the same point (which is within the highly reduced agro range from harmony). Harmony works fine on the 2 on the sides and all the other fixed critters, and works on all wanderers as long as nothing spawns right on top of you/him.

Spawn time is approx 2 hours.
Harmony

One spell that makes this part of the quest highly trivial. Harmony. Keep harmony on the dorf and harmony anything that he might wander past. He won't attack stuff and it won't attack him.

If you are a druid why dont you just invis him and see invis your self and follow him... invis yourself too.
Is this possable to invis npc? i think it is... why kill anything?
Or does he aggro on the mobs if he sees them.

Even if you did invis him (an enchanter could charm him, then invis him, then zone or log to break charm without breaking his invis or having him agro), he will stupidly agro on stuff. It's far easier to either harmony him and anything that is likely to come close to him, or to pull all of the other mobs out of the way of his path (if you don't want to just kill them yourself).

As a 40 monk, I did the quest solo by pulling all of the giants and orcs out of his path (killed a few myself, took some to a dwarf camp that would kill them, and had some chase me around for a while until he was past them and then feigned out). The only thing I had to fight was the rabid kodiak, but it did take me several attempts to get him to survive long enough to spawn the bear.

As far as I know, you can only invis group members. That is true for invisibility vs. undead, which I can cast, and I heard the same from Casters who have the normal invis spell.

Of course you can invite Boridain, but I fear he won't find the FOLLOW button :)

You can invis him if you charm him, but why do that? Just charm him, SoW him, have chanter invis to break the charm, then he AE stuns him, then memblurs and the effect is still on. You can also buff him while he's charmed so why not have your cleric friend HB him and a druid Skin like Nature him, then the chanter RUNE him. It can be done and it can help. ;-)

Spawn time on the little punk is about 3 hours from when he dies/depops.

Haven't seen captain repop after handing in the axe, but i make sure he die just right before. Fort entrance always clear when the kid gets there (trained to dwarf camps.)

Lull everything works good.

Rabid Kodiak spawned as yellow and red at 36. Watch out when fighting him. Hes good at keeping aggro so it easy for him to get killed by adds :PPPP

This one harder for me than the next 2 just because he dies so easy.
Bordain
# Sep 03 2001 at 10:44 PM Rating: Excellent
After you give Bordain the axe, he walks toward the Giant Fort Entrance. Two Giants spawn here, about 3500hps each. It may be a good idea to kill these before handing him the axe.

When you give him the axe, a Frost Giant Captain, around level 45 spawns and walks to the gate, You can either kill him, or pull him away and root him.

After the Giant Fort Gate, Boridain heads to neg1150, 1000 and stops for a few minutes.

Bordain then heads to 0, 250 where a Giant and an Orc Prisoner are, these can be killed before spawning Boridain also, they are pretty low level, about 3000hp for the Giant, and less than 1500 for the orc.

Boridain then walks to neg2030, 1380 and stops for a few minutes.

Then it's on to the entrance of the Orc Fort at loc neg3450, 450. A few orcs spawn here as well, but can be killed in advance.

Then Dain heads back to neg2250, 1600 and the Rabid Kodiak Spawns off behind him.

Wandering Orcs and Giants will attack, so keep an eye open at all times.

Once you kill the kodiak 4 giants do not spawn. I did this quest a few times, for myself, and for other people. Easiest way to do it is harmony everything, harmony all mobs, and harmony Baradain too. I did this and the only thing I had to fight was the rabid kodiak at the end. If you have two people to harmony it's as easy as pie. I did it solo. I used panick animal on the kodiak every 12 seconds and it was an easy fight (just like any panick animal fight)

I helped today with the quest for the 10th ring. The battle for the 8th ring is just that, A mere battle. To get the 10th ring you must fight and WIN a WAR!

When it starts in Great Divide, the entire zone depops, everything goes poof. Then an army of Coldain forms up in several spots on the map. Most of the NPCs from Dwarves from the previous quests convene a council outside Thurgadin, and then each goes to command a different part of the army. Then the hell begins......

I stood at the Axemen line in front of Thurgadin and counted 5 FULL PAGES of Kromiff on my track list. This isnt including all the Dwarves and over 100 PCs in the zone.

Then, over the next THREE HOURS Wave after Wave of Kromiff spawns and assults Thurgadin from 3 sides. First Recruits(blue at 52), then later Priests and Warriors, yellow to me, then Warriors and Generals. And then after that there is a lull, but only a short once before several waves of Veterans and High Priests lead by even meaner Generals, all red to me, are sent after the city.

After all the giants are defeated, a named boss, Narandi the Wretched, spawns, as tough as any planar god, has all sorta special attacks, including soemthign called the Flurry of Blows that just DROPPED people dead instantly. Me, I dont even know how I died. I was at 3 bubble health, and suddenly I get the message "you died". No spell effect or damage, nothing...

The reward is a +10 ring, 100hp with the effect Dain's Blessing (10point DS, 10hp regen, and +45 attack).

The mob also dropped some SWEET gear, noen of which I got of course...bleh...

I wasnt there for the end, was waiting for the rez, but I know several of the named Dwarves went down. I am assuming that Narandi the Wretched had some item that needed to be turned in, but I'm not sure. Man, I love bein on E'Ci!

I just helped a lvl 60 rogue complete this quest. He did all the protecting of the dorf, and kept me safe too, as I'm only 24th. But he needed a tailor to make the blanket to get the copper ring. When the rabid Kodiak spawned, he and his guild buddy made short work of it and then he got the other half of this quest (the broken axe). I handed in the ring, he handed in the axe, and my service was complete. I was very well paid, with enough plat to make me encumbered.

It was a lot of fun, but I'm not sure I understand the whole series of quests here. Final reward: no drop ring with 8ac, 8dex, 8mr? Is this significantly better than everything else? Or is this series of quests about the journey and not the destination?

As soon as you start the quest.. the dorf despawns and then respawns.

Some where along the line my cleric accidentaly attacked the dorf.. rooted him.. then atoned him. This did not stop the quest, once the dorf broke root.. he kept on to the final destanation.

The rabid kodiak spawns right on the platform that Boridain is standing on when you first hand him the axe.

Boridain himself did not aggro the rabid kodiak, but a few orcs did.. We had to slay the orcs before we took down the kodiak. and by the time we were done.. Bordain had allready despawned.

*Quick Question* Has anyone timed the Boridain spawn? I know its more than 30 minutes..

If you got the rabid pelt but Boridain despawns, all is not lost. You can simply wait for him to respawn, give him the axe, then give him the pelt. It works - I just did it.

I just did the quest without fighting a single giant or orc. Simply Harmony the dwarf and the giants/orcs before they meet (and any mobs that wander too close). It's easy, since the dwarf walks, not runs, on his rounds. The only mob I had to fight was the rabid kodiak.

Another Tactic
# Mar 06 2001 at 5:37 AM Rating: Default
I initiated this quest while 35 and was somewhat amused when Boridain headed straight for the giant fort. I managed to ensnare the 1st giant just as he and boridain started fighting. He then agroed on me and chased me all the way back to Rygorr keep. The nice thing was that Boridain hammered him all the way and I managed to do more than 50% damage and got the credit for the kill.

It would seem if you're lowish then you could handle the Giants one at a time this way. Boridain did wander off just before I killed the giant - I assume he headed back to the fort or on to the second waypoint. Due to the fact that you dont have to kill the rabid before he despawns I feel you could do this at a lot lower level than that listed above - I think it is easy for 2 mid lev 30's - only got to try it now.

3 points I feel - you can take the giants 1 at a time - you can keep him alive easily if you agro the mobs - and its an easy way to get that extra assistance to kite a yellow giant. Not as nice as quad kiting rygorr though :)

Dwarf's Wandering Walk
# Feb 16 2001 at 10:37 AM Rating: Excellent
After you give the quest dwarf the axe, he heads immediately to the front gates of the giant fort. You will need to kill/kite away the two guards there. Next he heads to the Ruined Houses with Ry'Gorr and Giant Guards, straight for the little corral holding one giant and Ry'gorr. Lastly he heads for the Ry'gorr fort, before heading back to his beginning point. When he reaches his starting point that is when the Rabid Kodiak spawns. You must kill the Kodiak quickly as the dwarf does despawn pretty quick. Fear not though, just wait until the dwarf respawn at his starting point (this might be an hour or two) and give him a new axe and then immediately had him the rabid pelt you looted off the Kodiak. He will give you the broken axe then and continue on his merry way once more.

The dwarf does not seem to aggro rhinos or griffens, wolves. He will immediately attack any giant or orc in his path. So plan accordingly. HE also take several little rests stops, these are great little heal and mana breaks.

I hope this helps.
