You say, 'Hail, Garadain Glacierbane'

Garadain Glacierbane says 'Hrmff, what's this? A spy sent from the giant heathens, or the selfrighteous wurms perhaps? Either way, you'd be no [friend] of the great Coldain.'

You say, 'I am a friend.'

Garadain Glacierbane says 'A friend, you say? That remains to be seen. Much more to being a friend of the Coldain than just sayin' so. Anyway, I'm too [tired] to argue about it. I haven't slept in days.'

You say, 'Why are you tired?'

Garadain Glacierbane says 'Did I say tired? Exhausted is more like it. Ever since that blizzard last week I haven't slept a wink. I came back from huntin' snow orcs to find that my [blanket] had blown away and now I'm just too tired to rustle up a new one.'

You say, 'What blanket?'

Garadain Glacierbane says 'Not just any old blanket, mind ye, mine was made of the finest tundra kodiak hides and snow panther skins, two of each. When I was wrapped up in it ya couldn't see me a bit, no, I blended right into the snow, I did. Say, if you be a friend, here's yer chance to prove it. Sew me up a new blanket so I can get some rest.'

Garadain's blanket must be made from two High Quality Cougarskins (rare drops from A Snow Cougar) and two High Quality Tundra Kodiak Pelts (rare drops from A Tundra Kodiak). Tailor them together to craft a Coldain Hunting Blanket (trivial 66) and give this to Garadain.

Garadain Glacierbane says 'Ahh, that'll do fine. Take this, it is but a trinket for now, but continue to serve the Coldain and it will grow in power. I must get some rest now, for I have been told my [nephew] has disappeared again and I will need to track him down tomorrow.'
Your faction standing with Coldain could not possibly get any better.
Your faction standing with Dain Frostreaver IV got better.
Your faction standing with Kromzek got worse.
Your faction standing with Kromrif could not possibly get any worse.
You gain experience!!

Ugh... got my first HQ Kodiak pelt on 2nd kill....... and the next one about 500 kills later no exaggeration - do NOT NOT NOT try this combine unless you have tailoring skill to trivialit - one of worst drop rates Ive ever seen, or else the RNG just hates me :*(

I recently started this quest and it took me roughly 6 hours to find 8 HQ Kodiak and 6 HQ Cougar skin. Made my combine attempt first at 51 tailoring skill and failed. Tried a second time and it worked.

I found most of the Cougars are in the northen part of the zone in the center of the map. Not sure if this is their "area" but this is just where I encounterd most of them.

There is one thing that you should know up front. Yea, the ds does stack with druid ds, but it is overwritten by any potion ds. In most write ups, the ds is reported as stacking with anything, so just know that it isn't. I had set out to do this quest with my shammy just to add some more dmg to my overall ds and was severely disappointed when my potions overwrote this effect. Yea, it will still come in handy now and then, but I wouldn't have gone to the effort to do this if I had known in advance..

Cheers

I've been 5 for 5 on these blankets in the past week with a tailoring skill of 66. Unless I've had some incredible luck with the RNG, I'd have to guess the trivial is lower than 66.

Just made this today. Upped my tailoring skill with some spare spider silks to 12 then did the mandrake roots untill 65. Got blanket on first try. The recipe for woven mandrake (2 mandrake roots combined) wasn't coming up on the loom menu, so I combined them, then saved the recipe The mandrake roots are available at the alchemist supplier seven's o'danos. He is upstairs in the same building as loom. Quick, easy way to get to skill level 66 in tailoring.

fastest way to skill up...
# May 27 2004 at 10:00 AM Rating: Decent
...tailoring is to go to POK vendor & buy several stacks of mandrake roots (about 44p per stack). combine 2 of them, unstacked of course, in your sewing kit. it will get you up to 66. you can sell back the combines OR use them to make misty thicket picnics. (learned all this from guild mate & tried it out so know it works. thanks for the tip, balauk! *grin*)

If you have Discord, you can get all tradeskills up to 50 for free. There's an npc near the merchants of each skill on the ship in Abysmal. They'll hand you the components needed (which will also flag you for being able to do Discord combines). For tailoring, find Tonlyei Lyhin.

My level 21 Wizard was able to get to Absymal Sea just fine and get those merchants to give her items to skill up on and gain the ability to deal with GoD tradeskill items. Just have to be able to use the Magus's and hop over to Abysmal Sea.

I think trivial is higher than 41, i failed with a skill of 41, though there is a 5% fail rate after trivial, but i've heard many people fail after 41

A trivial of 41 just means you can no longer improve your skill by making it once your skill is 41. You still have about a 1/3 chance of failing at skill 41. The 5% fail rate you've heard about is when your skill is very much higher than the triv. (Though the formulas got changed a bit so that if your skill is a LOT higher your chance of failure might even go below 5%.)

Do ring 2 and ring 4, hold the axe from ring 2 for now.

Collect:
2 High Quality Tundra Kodiak Pelts
2 High Quality Cougarskins
high quality walrus hide
Wooly Rhino Horn
Skinning Rock

Tailor up the blanket for ring 1 and smith the knife for ring 3.

Trade off to your MQ partner (shared bank if an alt) the smithed knife for quest 3 and the coldain hammer from quest 4.

Turn in the blanket and get ring 1, turn it in with the axe and get ring 2. Now turn in ring 2 then let your MQ partner turn in the knife to finish ring 3 and use that plus the hammer you gave him to do ring 4...voila!

That's as far as I got so far, I'll post more info if I find tricks for ring 5 and above.

This is the best, fastest and cheapest way to raise Tailoring.

Buy Large sewing kit, 2 stacks of gorget patterns and 2 stacks of tunic patterns. Go to any Newbie area and loot Spiderling silk and combine as you go in sewing kit. Save up around 4 stacks of threads. My choices: Misty Thicket (stay on paths), or EC near huts closest to Freeport zone. Then go to Marus Seru and kill Grey Rock Hoppers, loot and save ALL pelts dropped (and no-drop eggs for another quest). Combine as you loot full stacks so you can see some progress.

To raise any higher you will need many HQ pelts and smithing trivial at 37.

Silk thread-combine 2 Spiderling silk (or Shadeling) [trivial 15]
Leather Padding-silk thread, LQ rockhopper pelt [trivial 31]
greyhopper armor-greyhopper hide, pattern (mask, gorget, wristband, sleeve, gloves, belt, boot, shoulderpad, helmet, cloak) [trivial 88] or 2 greyhopper hides, pattern (tunic, pants) [trivial 95]
7 Rings Doable in 1 Night

I started this quest 3 days ago and am now on Ring 7. By gathering the drop items ahead of time (3 hours solo work), I (60 Pally) was able to do the first 5 rings in one night (2.5 hours) with a 53 Cleric buddy and two rangers in the zone (levels 51 & 52) who helped with the fights for Ring 4 & 5. The 6th and 7th ring could have easily been completed that same night had I done my research and been prepared (I passed up Rodrick, a rare spawn, and had to wait 3 days to eventually Multiquest his head to finish Ring#6).

Here's how first 7 Rings can be done in one night with one group or partial group (Low 50's):

Part 1: Gather ALL these ITEMS ahead of time (Solo Work) then get a group together and the first 7 rings can be completed in 4-5 hours.

Needed for Ring 1
- 2 HQ Cougar Skins (Bazaar - 20pp each) or in EW
- 2 HQ Tundra Kodiak Pelts - Farmed one (spawn near IceClad Bridge), and purchased second for 200pp from someone in zone.
- combined to make blanket ahead of time (succeeded with skill 75 Tailoring - trivial apparently 41 - failed on my first attempt with 44 skill)

Needed for Ring 3
- High Quality Walrus Hide - bazaar 10pp
- Wooly Rhino Horn (tusk) - farmed one near Orc camp. Try OOC...many people have them.
- Skinning Rock (no drop) - lots on ground near Iceclad bridge and also one seems to spawn regularly near the first tree out from Rygorr Fort entrance
- combined in forge to make knife

Needed for Ring 5
- Invasion Plans (drop off Rygorr Messenger) Fluked upon Messenger and killed him while doing 2nd ring. The Invasion Plans can also be bought in Bazaar for 20-40 pp. Aquire them ahead of time.

Ring 6
- Rodrick's Head (no drop)- Rodrick spawns by hut outside of Rygorr Fort entrance (neg 3500, pos 900) after the spawn of Rygorr Emissary. This spawn appears to be broken at this time - ***See note below***

Part 2: Actual Handins and Fights
After gathering the items for the first 5 rings on my own (took about 3hours), the actual handins for the first 5 rings took 2.5 hours, with the first 3 rings being done with just me and 53 Cleric in about 1 hour.

Unfortunately, I hadn't researched the 6th ring and passed up killing Rodrick who was up while I quested the first 5 (I didn't know who he was). Had I aquired Rodrick's Head that same night, our group could easily have done the next 2 rings in about another 1.5 hours. Thus, the first 7 rings are doable in one night with one group in about 4-5 hours.

***Note***: Currently, Rodrick spawn appears to be broken and he only pop's after patch, server crash, or reset. After monitoring the spawn with some others over the next 3 days, Rodrick and Emissary were never seen. Fortunately, Ring 6 is Multiquestable, which is how I ended up completing it. Did an OOC in PoK and generous 52 Monk had head in bank and did the Hand in with me.

Hope this helps and saves you some time.

This is a great post, but you gotta edit this, the ring 3 uses a high quality walrus hide not a flawless. I been killing in EW for 3 hours now looking for a flawless (I was just going by your post cause its soo good), I must have destroyed a dozen or more high quality walrus hides. Then I went and looked at the actual quest here on all and it says high quality.
tailor skillup tip
# Apr 16 2003 at 9:46 PM Rating: Decent
If you want to get your tailoring up quickly. Combine 2 mandrake roots bought in SH downstairs in the Beastlord guild I think.

40p a stack for mandrake roots. combine 2 in a tailoring kit can be used for a later combine for higher level stuff... you can sell the result in the bazaar for other skills.

Trivial at 66 for this combine...

Just as an FYI, mandrake root is sold in the stout quarter of Shadow Haven. If you use your map (you have LoY right?) you can see there are two alchemy vendors in the trainer building for naturish types. The female sells the mandrake root.

Well this is frustrating. I worked my Tailoring up to 41 and then did the combine which failed. OK. No problem, got all the pelts again, failed again, argggg! I guess I'll try to bump my tailoring up a bit more before my third attempt.
Coldain Faction Ups?
# Nov 05 2002 at 3:12 PM Rating: Default
So I'm working on my Coldain Faction for Thurg armor quests AND am also commencing my coldain ring/shawl quests.

Just curiuos of the relative faction improvements of killing FG's and drakkel wolves vs. doing the various ring/shawl quests. Am I going to get faction ups quicker one way or another?

I spent a couple of days getting tradeskills up high enough for the coldain rings. 3 hours in EK collecting 194 silks, then another 3 hours in Shadowhaven working on smithing. A great spot for this is in the far end away from the nexus, near the Paludal Caverns. There is a forge with molds and ore. There is also a vendor with bottles and water flasks nearby.

I picked up my HQ cougar skins in Iceclad, then killed roughly 17 Kodiaks before I got 2 HQ pelts.

My tailoring was 44 when I did the combine. I had Brilliance and was running Cassindra's Elegy with Amplification to get my int and wis up above 90. I got the trivial message when it succeeded.
Rare HQ Kodiak Pelts
# Oct 01 2002 at 8:57 PM Rating: Default
Is everyone else also having the problem of getting High Quality Kodiack Pelts. I've been hunting them for almost a week, killing maybe an average of 25-35 a night and havne't gotten one HQ pelt. Although I have a ton of Ruined, Low, and Medium Quality. Any recommondations or suggestions on how to get them? Yes, I have tried the bazaar and no one, for the moment, is selling them.

I've only ever killed 1 tundra kodiac; but it dropped this pelt. Luck of the draw I guess... I was in Eastern Wastes at the time.
