At the end of the previous quest, Garadain mentioned a smithing hammer.

You say, 'What smithing hammer?'

Garadain Glacierbane says '[Tain] Hammerfrost can get you one. Find him and give him this.'

You receive a Note to Tain.

You say, 'Who is Tain?'

Garadain Glacierbane says 'Tain left a short time ago, he said he had a score to settle with a particular Kromriff.'

Tain Hammerfrost is a wounded dwarf lying on the ground at -4950, -2650, a bit west of the bridge to Iceclad Ocean. Giving him the note doesn't do much, so try hailing him.

You say, 'Hail, Tain Hammerfrost'

Tain Hammerfrost says 'The bloody Kromrif ambushed me! I escaped, but I am near death. They'll be tracking me down to finish me off at any moment. Without [help], I'm as good as dead.'

You say, 'I will help.'

Tain Hammerfrost says 'Thank Brell! I hear them approaching from just over that hill! Slay the leader, Ghrek, and give me his elixir.'

Four frost giants and a named leader, Ghrek Squatnot, spawn on a hill a bit east of Tain's location. They will kill Tain (forcing you to wait for him to respawn), so your best bet is to intercept them and draw aggro before they can reach him. Kill Ghrek and loot the Frozen Elixir from his corpse. Give this to Tain.

Tain Hammerfrost says 'I will report your selfless actions when I return to Thurgadin. Take this for your troubles, friend. I hope you find it useful. Fare thee well.'
Your faction standing with Coldain could not possibly get any better.
Your faction standing with Dain Frostreaver IV got better.
Your faction standing with Kromzek got worse.
Your faction standing with Kromrif could not possibly get any worse.
You gain experience!!

You receive a Coldain Smithing Hammer. Return to Garadain and give him the hammer along with your Gold Coldain Insignia Ring.

Garadain Glacierbane says 'Excuse me, ______, aren't you forgetting something?'
Garadain Glacierbane says 'Ahh, there we go now, that's more like it. It would be time to return to the hunt were it not for the [plans] our spies have discovered.'
Your faction standing with Coldain could not possibly get any better.
Your faction standing with Dain Frostreaver IV got better.
Your faction standing with Kromzek got worse.
Your faction standing with Kromrif could not possibly get any worse.

#REDACTED, Posted: Oct 19 2001 at 3:24 PM, Rating: Sub-Default, (Expand Post) Ok folks I know this quest from coldain prayer shawl quest. Its a vial of velium vapors... You dont need to kill that giant to get it. You can make it with Pottery skills. Oh by the way a nice side effect is you can swill the vial yourself and gate to thurgadin :) pottery skill needed is in 100's. For all you Care Bear server players this means yes youll have to do something besides auction and chit chat cause its no drop. hehe yea like a carebear server player would even want this item. lol you losers dont know what your missing.

not the same vial as the shawl quest, although the graphic is the same. They are not interchangeable.

Soloing for Sks
# Sep 07 2001 at 12:41 AM Rating: Decent
I have been soloing this quest and just got through with this one today. I though I would share with you how to easily do this one if you are an SK. First trigger the spawn and while the giants are killing Tain. Click on Ghrek. You MUST have on SOW or just forget it. Cast a spell on Ghrek and have him start after you. Lead him due south to the dwarf encampment there. Take him right into the camp where they all start attacking him. Cast darkness and then fear on Ghrek. When the dwarves have almost killed him, cast your HT on him to finish him. You MUST get the last hit on him or the dwarves get the credit and you get nothing. I am lvl 58 so it was easy to single pull him. I also used my #3 Disc. to increase the HT damage and therefore assure the kill was mine. Good luck to you all
Doing Quest Solo
# Sep 04 2001 at 9:25 PM Rating: Default
Was able to do this solo with my Level 51 Bard. Just run with Selo's and occasionally snare one of the standard giants with Chain. After a while you'll leave it behind and it despawns. When you are down to two giants charm Grehk and use him to kill the other. NEVER let Selo's drop or you are dead meat.

First time I did this I despawned all four frost giants and then used Ghrek to kill seven mammoths, two manticores and two blizzard dervishes. In other words serious damage output. It also took most of my mana bar and a lot of time. Second time I kept one frost giant. The giants nuked each other very fast since they both output high amounts of melee damage. Only used one bubble of mana that time.

55th Ranger no prob :) Mem'd up Harmony, and offered Tain my assistance. The giants came a running and smoked the lil' dorf. I then harmonied Grek and then dot'd him with Drones. He ran after me, and unfortunatly, so did one of his buddies. The rest stayed put ;) Targeted his buddy, snared, and continue to pull Grek away until in safe distance for the others to depop. root dot root dot snare dot yada yada yada /auc WTB arrows! /disc trueshot and well didnt hit for more than 50 =/ wonder what that was, i was arrow kiting without root. Oh well, got him down to 1/8th HP and finished him off with some dots curtosy of a friendly bard =) Now I gotta try this Tain trick since I didn't make it back in time unfortunatly =*(
easy way to kill named giant
# Jun 28 2001 at 8:02 PM Rating: Decent
I have started doing these quests and last night I saw Tain so just for fun I said "what help" to spawn the giants to see how I would deal with it when the time came. Well, 4 giants popped up really quickly. They had killed Tain before I even saw that they were there! (I guess I was looking in the wrong direction.) Anyway, they didn't agro on me because my faction isn't low enough with the Giants, so I got a little distance from the giants and snared one of them (not Ghrek.) Then start running. When you get far enough from the snared giant he depops (even though you are still on his hate list.) Now all you have to do is keep snaring and have them depop until you are down to one giant - the named giant "Ghrek". At this point you might need some help from someone else. Ghrek is a level 43 giant and he double hits for max 140 I think. I'm a level 43 ranger so there is no way I can kill him on my own. Kill Ghrek, loot the vial, wait until Tain is back up, initiate the quest, then give him the vial immediately, start running, and let the giants kill Tain again :)

Did this today with 54 war, 54 cleric, 52 druid, 55 druid, and a 52 Mage. Wasn't too hard though tain musta died or depopped during battle because he was no where to be found after I got rez'd (yup I died =P). Tried respawning him by having druids go and say What Smithing Hammer? and What tain? to Garadain. Tried it once shortly after battle and once about 15 minutes later, no dice. I logged and tried back about an hour after still no Tain. Tried again about 5.5 hours and Tain was up. I logged in to see him standing up. No response to hail (he does respond when laying down) Gave him the note (druid gave it to me earlier) - nothing, tried hailing again and got the [help] phrase. I pulled out the blue vial, said what help? and immediately handed it to him. Got faction, exp, and the hammer. Then I ran my *** off south then off east and waited near bridge to see if giants were on me (doubted it since they move at near sow speed) but nope they were gone so I headed to Garadain and turned in hammer and ring and got part five of quest. Giants were nowhere to be seen so I assume they depop after killing Tain if they have no hate list (I passed very close to tains spawn area and saw none only about 2 minutes max after they popped).

He is not on a timed spawn, as I have seen him spawn twice in 3 hours, and not once in 5 hours.

Pulling ghrek solo
# Jan 16 2001 at 8:48 PM Rating: Default
As a 43 wizard I managed to pull ghrek solo, got him down 1/4 health then needed help finishing him off. what I did was let them all run up and kill tain, then they all stand there on top of each other. I cast AoE snare and got all the giants except ghrek who resisted (he is very snareable I was lucky) and I ran off while the other giants de-popped. If you snare all of them, just root ghrek and let friends finish him, pull the other giants away to depop, if you snare ghrek but one of the other giants resists....I have no answer. I was lucky and the name of the vial is frozen elixir.

I know how too pull him and kill him solo, but could someone clear up the part where you turn in the Elixer? Can I go back later and hail him again and say (Help) and turn in the Elixer before the giants get there...Then hopfully get the Hammer... and just let the giants kill him and despawn? Anyone ever done it this way? Can someone explain in detail how to get the hammer after the giants kill and you come back later to turn in the Elixer.
RE: Pulling ghrek solo
# Mar 07 2001 at 12:07 AM Rating: Default
After one depops you have to pull them since Ghrek will depop next (standing there). I just rooted one, got Ghrek and 2. Just run forword, root one of his friends, and get out of distance and he'll dispawn. Rinse and repeat until you have only Ghrek. I soloed him without even fighting by using the Coldain. Run him into one of their camps and let them beat on him, then root him so he can kill them all, leaving him at 10% or so life (timing is a little hard). He should just run away when root breaks allowing you to beat on him.

# Dec 23 2000 at 10:07 PM Rating: Default
Here is how I did the hurt dwarf part. I go to him and tell him I will help. The giants spawn and I run out of aggro range before they get there. I cast fear on the named one then follow just him and kill him. The rest kill the dwarf. I then went back a second time after the dwarf respawned and tell him I will help. You have to do this because when you tell him you will help he respawns and this is the one ya give the elixer to. So this second time I cast a pet tell the dwwarf ill help then I charge the incomming giants. That aggroed them all on me and I ran them to the dwarf camp and let the dwarves kill them while I went back and turned in the elixer.
Try Harmony

Here is what I did, since there was only two of us. I harmonied the named giant then pulled him, then killed him and looted the elixir. Now the other giants will kill off Tain, but wait an hour and he will repop.

When Tain repops do not give him the elixir. Say " what help" wait for him to sit down and respawn, he will cast a spell. Then give him the elixir and you will get the Coldain smithing hammer.
#Anonymous, Posted: Dec 20 2000 at 4:41 AM, Rating: Sub-Default, (Expand Post) I have also seen this battle sequence get triggered at the orc fort. Either bring a lotta friends or get outta the way when this happens! Would ya believe that there are archers in the dwarven ranks that fire CROSSBOWS!?!? Couldn't believe this myself until I was fighting a frost giant soldier and 5 dwarves proceeded to fire away at his butt ) If you're questing and reach this point, invite a full raiding party, because I know the guy who triggered the fight never finished the quest. He died on the battlefield.

Not sure exactly where in the Thurgadin Library this starts, but speaking to a lad there will lead to him telling you how to properly address the Dain. Something like "Greetings and good fortune, most honorable Dain Frostreaver IV."

When you hail the Dain in this manner the chamberlain will say that you have not yet proven yourself worthy enough to speak to the Dain. When you inquire about how to be worthy he will direct you to Garadain in EW. He is in one of the huts in the dwarf compound closest to the orc fort.

Quest One.
Hailing Garadain and working through his dialogue, you will find that he requires a blanket. Its takes 2 HQ couger skins and 2 HQ tundra kodiak skins. I failed at 21 skill, failed at 42 on my first attempt but completed it on my second attempt. Word is that its not trivial at 70 but is under 82.

When you turn in the blanket he will give you a copper coldain insignia ring (AC:1, +1 STR, +1 MR) and speak of Quest Two.

Quest Two
Speaking throug Garadain's dialogue will reveal a tale about a coldain hunter close by that needs some help. He will give you an axe to give to him. If you head Northwest from the front of the orc fort you will come to a large hill with an open. plataeu-like area on top. This is where Baridain spawns. Give him the axe and he will proceed. He will wander in front of the giant fort (just the front, not into it), then head to the ruins (he only got close enough to agro one orc lookout in a ruined building), then he heads to the orc fort where he again just wanders to the front entrance. Then he heads back to his spawn spot. Note that he WILL agro and attack anything thats agroable (i.e. he does not agro on indifferent mobs like wooly rhinos). Best tactic is to get there before him and move the stuff away.

When he returns to his spot he will sit down and complain that he cant find the rabid kodiak. It will spawn behind him at the other end of the small plateau. The rabid kodiak is green to 54th and blue to 50th and not very hard. Once you kill the bear quickly loot his hide and give it you Baridain. He will give you a broken axe to return to Garadain. Turn in the broken axe AND your copper insignia ring. You get a silver insignia ring back (+1 to all the stats of the copper ring).

Quest Three
Garadain needs a new skinning knife. He says to combine in a forge a HQ walrus skin, a skinning stone, and a wooly rhino horn. Not sure what skill is required here as ive not yet done this part but i hear its not too easy. There are two spots known that spawn a skinning stone (on the ground) in the Eastern Waste. -5600, 1111 (confirmed cause thats where i got mine) and -6459, 971. Im sure they spawn in other places, probably anywhere that wandering mobs pop. Note that the new skinning knife is tradeable. So if you can have a friend with a high smithing skill collect the items.

Turning in the skinning knife and your silver ring will return a gold insignia ring (another +1 to its stats).

Quest Four.
Here Garadain says his skinning knife is not quite sharp enough and needs a coldain smithing hammer to complete and that Tain has one. Most here know about this part. Straight out and to the right a smidge from the dragon bridge is where Tain spawns. Be ready for the fight before anyone answers his dialogue (i.e. DO NOT SAY "HELP" before you are ready). As soon as you do 3 frost giants and a named one, Khrak, will spawn and come running (and they are FAST). Kill them and get the elixer off Khark and give to Tain. He will give you the coldain smithing hammer. Give that and your gold ring to Haradain and get a platinum ring (again +1 added to stats).

Quest 5
Garadin tell you about an orc assault. He wants you to find the Ry'Gorr messanger. Not sure where he spawns but i was jumped by him while sitting at the orc fort entrance. I assume thats a good place to wait for him. Hes easy and fell fast to a 630 DD and a few hits from a ranger. Take the invasion plans to the coldain lookout who is in the same camp as Garadain. This will spawn an orc war party close by (5 orcs and a named one). They are pretty tough i hear but have yet to face them so not sure. Kill the leader and turn in his head to Garadain along with your platinum ring. You get back an Obsidian insignia ring (again +1 to the stats for a total so far of AC:5, +5 str, +5 MR).

You are given another quest but i have yet to hear what this is or if the ring is improved further.

Whew!

Just did Part 2 earlier today and it was very fun! The little hunter guy was cracking me up. It was me (54th cleric), Bourdin (49th cleric, sorry if me spelled it wrong bud!), and Rameon (49th enchanter). We did root and mem blur several mobs along the way. Had to kill one frost giant savage at the gates because we didnt pull him before our little hunter arrived.

I know the ring is primarily for melee types but this is the quest the chamberlain requires for me to speak to the Dain. So thats why im doing it. Might have to end up turning it in for all i know.

I know what happens after the last part. Im not exactly sure what u give him next but i suggest you leave the Orc Fort lol. It will spawn a HUMOUNGOUS army of giants and orcs all lvl 50+ full of Orc Priests , and stuff like that and lots of named spawns which probly drop phat loot. Someone on our server did this and it was pretty fun to watch. When you give him the item or whatever some Lord guy comes and spawnsa bunch of more dwarves which u better have a huge group of 50's because its huge. The dwarves go and attack and youre supposed to follow and help. Its an old fasion war like in the medievil times, two army running at each other over the hills with swords and shields drawn.......

Garadain's quests
# Dec 12 2000 at 8:39 AM Rating: Good
I've posted this information to Allakhazam to put in the quests database, I did this on Saturday, 12/9, but he has yet to put the information in the quest database, I don't know why. So I'll post this here.

These quests are given by Garadain Glacierbane in the Eastern Wastes (loc approx -2700, -400). He will ask you to make a blanket.

First quest: Combine two high quality tundra kodiak hides and two high quality snow cougar skins in a large sewing kit (don't know if small works) to make the blanket. I have a skill level of 82 in tailoring, and the item was trivial. Turning this in will get you a Copper Coldain Insignia Ring (AC 1, STR +1, Sv Mag +1, wt 1.0, all/all, Magic, Lore, No Drop) and the following factions: Coldain better, DainFrostreaverIV better, Kromzek worse, Kromrif worse, and some xp.

Following the words in brackets gets you a second quest, which is to give an Axe (which you receive from Garadain) to his nephew Boridain.

Second quest: You must give the Axe to Boridain, and bring back proof that he is ok, along with your Copper ring. This requires going to coordinates -2446, 1544 and giving Boridain the Axe. At this point, he will start trying to find his Rabid Kodiak. Which means he wanders around and gets in trouble. You must keep him from dying. (btw, he walked to the giant fort but only to the entrance, but since it was camped, there were no giants out front, and he turned a walked away) I highly suggest a minimum of two people for this, so one can fight and the other can keep following Boridain. Some of the mobs we had to fight were blue to a 52, btw. Eventually, a Rabid Kodiak will spawn. Kill it, loot the rabid pelt, and give to Boridain. You don't have much time, as he will despawn in a minute or two after the kodiak is dead. He will give you back a Broken Axe. Take this Broken Axe (this is your "proof" for Garadain) and your Copper ring back to Garadain to recieve a Silver ring (same as Copper except AC 2, STR +2, Sv Mag +2). There was xp but no faction for completing this quest.

Following the words in brackets will get you a third quest, which is to make a new knife for Garadain.

Third quest: You need a flawless walrus hide, a wooly rhino tusk, and a skinning rock. The walrus hide is actually a high quality walrus hide, and the tusk is a horn. These can be found on the appropriate mobs. The hard part is the skinning rock, which spawns randomly on the ground anywhere in the zone. It looks like a dropped money icon, except it’s all red. Note that the rock is No Drop, so you can’t auction to buy one. Once you have all three items, combine them in a forge to make Garadain's new knife. My blacksmithing skill was 106, and making the knife was NOT trivial, I even got a skill raise. I suggest making sure you have a HIGH smithing skill level, as I had to do this part twice due to “lack the skill” (when my smithing was 56), and finding the skinning rock takes a lot of time. Once you have the knife made, take it and your Silver ring back to Garadain. You will receive xp and a Gold Coldain Insignia Ring (AC 3, STR +3, Sv Mag +3), but no faction increases.

Following the words in brackets will get you a fourth quest, which is to take a note to Tain Frostbight and get a Coldain Smithing Hammer from him.

Fourth quest: I have found a Tain Hammerfrost, but no Tain Frostbight. I tried giving the note to Tain Hammerfrost, but he did not respond. I'm still looking for Tain Frostbight.

(doing these quests with my level 52 Iksar Necro, Sslak)

Tain and Garadain
# Dec 10 2000 at 10:03 PM Rating: Default
I've been doing the Garadain quests (starts with making him a blanket) and I'm up to the fourth part. This requires finding Tain Frostbight and giving him a note to get a smithing hammer from him. From what I've read here, it sounds like Tain Hammerfrost might actually be the person. I'll find out. Please note that with Garadain you also turn in a ring you get from the prior quests, so just turning in the smithing hammer to Garadain probably won't work without also turning in the ring.

I've sent an e-mail to Allakhazam's with information regarding the first three quests from Garadain, but it hasn't been posted yet.

Sslak, level 52 Iksar Necro, House Arcanum, Bristlebane (aka Kristi, level 55 Human Magician)

Can you post more information on the blanket quest? I made the guy his blanket, he gave me a ring and an axe to give to his nephew. He told me to return with the ring and proof that his nephew is safe.
I found the nephew, handed him the axe (as the quest-giver instructed me to) and the little bugger equipped it (despawned and respawned), mumbled something about needing to kill a rabid kodiak, and then started walking. I followed him, and he went directly into the giant fort and was wasted by a frost giant.
Perhaps I need to kill this rabid animal for him, and the mob will drop proof that the nephew is safe?
by the way, the axe that the quest-giver gives is called a dull axe, and is like 2/50. lol, no wonder his nephew was slaughtered so fast.

What level was your tailoring skill? I just practiced mine up to 20 and I need another tundra kodiak hide to see if I can make the blanket. I gave my first set of hides to friend who made the blanket but it was no drop(doh!). Be at least I got keyord to next quest and I gave axe to the newphew Boridain after whcih he promptly walks directly into the giant fort and dies. For the person that got past this point, did you have to clear the giant camp or did you find the rabid kodiak hide yourself and give it to Boridain?
