If you kill the orc taskmaster, he sometimes drops a Brass Earring.

Hand an elven slave (Male Wood Elf) a Brass Earring.

an elven slave says 'You killed the taskmaster?! Absolutely amazing! The orcs will be fighting among themselves for power now and I can disappear in the commotion. Thanks, friend! Take this for your deeds!'

You gain experience!!

You receive A Tattered Cloth Note (identifies as "Csb I.O.U. Elf 1"), which reads:

Brother.. Nildar.. I live still.. I will be home soon

Merchant Nildar is located at 882, 202 in Kelethin. Give him the note.

Merchant Nildar says 'My brother still lives? Thank you for this news. Please, take this with my deepest thanks.'

You gain experience!!

But this is all i have got, plus a ringmail tunic from merchant. Has this quest change reward?
By the way as you can see the merchants name is Nildar, no Hildar

faction adjustments

Considering that this is one of only two quests mentioned on this site that raises faction with Kelethin merchants, I am quite interested (particularly since the other involves bringing down a sand giant). What I want to know is when the faction adjustments occur. Is it when I give the slave the earring? Is it when I give the note to the merchant? Is it both? Basically, getting faction up with elven merchants for a bad race is about as hard as getting faction up with Ogres for a good race. Any additional info would be most appreciated.

I have done this quest 4 times now 4 earrings to 4 wood elf slaves and 4 tattered notes to nildar i've gotten some pieces of armor leather or tattered leather and very very little experience.... but i never saw any note saying kelthingmerchant faction or merchant of felwithe faction has gone up or down... i think this is just a newbie quest for tattered leather items and nothing more... you turn in a key and it lists the faction adjustments you turn in the not to nildar and nothing just experience gained.... if someone with indifferent faction or better would do this quest and let me know if there is faction adjustment that would be great but i am apprehensive to some merchants and dubious to others... but i'm amiable and warmly to non merchants..... an repost here on the subject would be appreciated.

Setting wood elf slaves free in Crushbone works to. Not well, but it works. The other slaves give other faction.
