    You say, 'Hail, The Toilmaster'

The Toilmaster says 'Do not bother me unless you wish to join the chain gang. Now go away or I shall have my slaves chop you as they chop this granite!'

You say, 'I need granite pebbles.'

The Toilmaster says 'Ah. Looking for granite pebbles, are we? You must be a Swifttail. I am tired of doing your caste's work when you give nothing in return. Tell you what, I have lost many slaves to escape. If you bash their heads in with your many skills and return at least two busted froglok shackles I will give you one pile of granite pebbles.'

Busted Froglok Slave Shackles drop from escaped frogloks and escaped froglok slaves in the Swamp of No Hope. Hand him two Busted Froglok Slave Shackles.

The Toilmaster says 'A deal is a deal. Here is one pile of granite pebbles. I hope you need more because I know there are more escaped froglok slaves.'

I think the title would be more accurate as a "lack of experience", lol, but I wanted to share my last 9 hours spent trying to complete this silly quest. I will go over every strat I came across below, and my results with them.

1 - First, I'll begin with the below commenter on loc +2575,1402. I spent approximately 3 real time hours at this location. Once every day cycle, a mob spawned at this particular location. Each time, it was one of those man eating shrubs, which had conned even to my level 10 monk. I never saw any Froglok Escort, or any escort for that matter, nor any escaped frogloks. There were many times I had to carefully duck out of the way, as red conned leeches, mosquitos, manslayers, or other man eating shrubs would happen along into that area.

2 - The newbie area. There were many posts that said they had moderate success just south of the succor point, or right in the newbie yard. They slaughtered everything and got a few shackles in an hour there, however you had to watch for your escapee carefully as they would book it before you noticed it. I had a friend with me, I slaughtered the holy living heck out of anything that moved around the newbie area while my friend was on high alert through the surrounding area for any escapees. None were found after another 3 hours there.

3 - I had also read some things about following the path from cab south to the first island and kill everything that moves there, you will find some pops. So, everything there died. From the top of that path all the way down until I hit the water leading toward the second island. I killed everything there, too, for good measure. This is the only location I had any form of success with, more in the fact that I had a few mobs called "a froglok escort", as noted in many prior posts are different than the Froglok Escort. These escorts, when killed, drop a fife and a pie. I killed the first one, and scoured the island hoping for an escaped popped. Nothing. The second escort pop, I followed it around for 45 minutes before I gave up and killed the darn thing out of frustration. I also never saw an escaped froglok in this area after another 3 hours of mindless killing.

Perhaps I have awful luck, perhaps I was still somehow following precise directions incorrectly, or maybe this spawn is just broken on this particular server. I do not know. All I do know is that I will be giving up entirely on this series of quests, and trying to find some other method of filling my baby monk's depressingly empty gear slots.

Thought I would share my experience with this quest, perhaps it has been changed over the (many) years. Playing on a progression server now, and I'm hoping this information will be useful for others doing the same, especially considering the speculative, old, and bad information that seems to surround this quest.

Basically all of the prior information I read about this quest neglected the distinction between "a froglok escort" and "Froglok Escort".
"a froglok escort" seems to have nothing to do with this quest at all, it's the special one with caps that you're after. It seems Froglok Escort can spawn a few places in typical mob spawn locations. My two spawned right around +2575, +1402. After the Froglok Escort spawns, it stands completely still in place unless it needs to run from combat. Any hostile mob seems to aggro on the little guy when they wander by, skellies, large mosquitos, maneating plants, maybe some others. The interesting and important part is a little difficult to describe, but I'll give it a shot. It seems that somewhere out in the swamp there are a few spawns that are likely completely inactive until the Froglok Escort spawns. Once he spawns, you will some mobs come running from a specific direction towards his exact location. These spawns out in the swamp are what can spawn the escaped froglok slaves that you need. The issue is, the slaves have some placeholders. Skeletons, leeches, iksar marauder, and a small handful of other typical swamp creatures will all come rushing (full run speed) toward your Froglok Escort friend. What you need to do is protect the Froglok Escort, if he dies the whole "event" is over and you have to get another one to spawn. Kill everything that rushes towards him as quickly as you can, and eventually some of them will pop up as escaped slaves. I believe as long as Froglok Escort stays alive, these mobs will keep spawning and rushing after him.

TLDR: Kill stuff around +2575, +1402 until Froglok Escort (with caps) spawns, defend him from meanies and eventually escaped slaves will show up.

I just killed in the Swamp of No Hope newbie yard. 6 shackles in less than 2 hours. Best have sow on you or a mount though, as the escaped frogloks book it out of the newbie area like lightning.

I'll just offer up my experience. First off, I spent like a day and a half (two or three sittings) running around between the various "islands" killing everything with no luck. I really had begun to think that maybe I was in the wrong zone or they had removed the escaped frogloks or something.

Then, I noticed a Froglok Escort. I turned the situation over in my head, all the various theories people have provided here, and decided that this sort of quest just usually doesn't get that complicated. It's typically a simple placeholder process, so I killed the Escort. That done, I continued running around the island (I had decided to concentrate on the island nearest the newbie area at this point) in hopes of progressing the spawn cycle if there was one.

Another Escort spawned, then another, with me killing them in turn. Then an Enforcer spawned, and I killed him as well. Shortly thereafter, an Escaped Froglok bounds along nearby. Ecstatic, I promptly pounced on him and killed him. Woot! I had one set of shackles. I didn't see any more Escapees for the rest of the day (game world time). I had begun to think that maybe some were right about them only spawning during the day or night hours, this case appearing to be night.

I decided to bring my 22 ranger in to track for me. I would kill them with the ranger and camp and log the necro on to loot. With my ranger in tow, killing just about everything on the island, I watched track through an entire EQ night with no Escapees showing up. About 10AM EQ time rolled around, and another enforcer popped (no escorts). I killed it and continued to watch track. Shortly thereafter, Escorts began to spawn one at a time. I killed three or four, and then Escaped Frogloks started spawning, sometimes two at a time. This continued for as long as I continued killing everything on the island between spawns (which were really just a few minutes apart at this point). I had looted eight shackles over the course of a couple of hours before I had to log for a while.

My conclusion? Nothing concrete, really. I'm not sure anything is linked to the day/night cycle. It didn't seem to be from my experience. For that matter, I can't really even confirm that the escorts have anything to do with the escaped Frogloks spawning. I guess there's not much I *can* confirm without a doubt beyond that they do spawn, and a tracker is nearly a requirement.

My suggestion? As others have suggested, go to that first island and just kill everything that moves, and keep 'em killed. Make the occasional run up and down along the w/nw side of the zone near the newbie area as you keep the island clear of mobs. Bring a tracker if you can. It makes all the difference. The Escaped Frogloks could be spawning without your even knowing it otherwise, and you may never see them, even if they path fairly close by.

    Hope this helps.

Was hunting for these fella's this PM, wife and I both with 12 pets, did a rotation on the first island we came to after leaving Cabillis. She went clockwise I went counter and pet targeted everything except the Froglok Escorts. The Escaped Frogloks spawned all over the island and not all of them were hauling ***. So if you don't have a tracker at your disposal try and get a pet class buddy (or wife in my case :)) to come down and help you out. Took us all of 45 minutes or so to get 8 once we got them spawning.

Spawn confirmed. Just barely north of the pillar on the island, like a few feet away, I got 3 to spawn on my head in a row. Just kill anything in sight and stay next to the pillar i think because other mobs kill the frogloks.

It is very easy on povar server to get the shackles. The escaped frogs pop very easy for me,they will pop in daytime thats when i got them. Its simple..from cabilis follow path in swamp of no hope for abot 10 seconds, you will see newbie killing area on right side.kill all you can and the frogs will pop.The mosquitos will kill the escaped frogs, this is confirmed,so you got to be quick when they pop.Saw some pop too along the wall right past on same side so keep an eye out there as well..good hunting!

finally got my spawns. ran back into Cab to find taskmater to do turn in, and guess whats walking back to spot, 2 slaves, instead of 3, so if you can post someone at slave and watch them despwn, this might indicate the spawn in the swamp. gl

all i have to say is that this is the most stupid time consuming quest for a pile of pebbles that are probably good for nothing I spent from 10pm to 1pm in the afternoon the next day trying EVERYTHING everyone had suggested and not a damn thing. I evan had seen 4 yes 4 escorts but none would free the stupid slaves I would kill & kill & kill and they would not even budge. Don't waste your time on this !!!!! VERY DISAPPOINTING!!!!!!!!!

You sir are a freakin idiot. It is useless only to those it has no use too, right. For the Iksar Necs like me it is just a step to our skullcap quest, BTW which has rumors of 10th level, that many Iksar Necs wish to obtain. Do not coment on an item you have no knowledge of inthe first place. For the second part you need check out the bazaar. Those Pile of Granite Pebbles sell for quite a bit of plat there. Lazy necs that blew off quest while it was broken are looking for fast ways to get it in a timely manner and atill be able to progress. TY and flame on

Escorts do not free the slaves, having one escort up
at any time of the day gives a chance that killing the other weenie green mobs will spawn an escaped froglok. The problem is thanks to sony's lovely graphical engine that solves no problems, looks no better, and effects gameplay in a negative fashion that they aren't fixing the mobs get stuck under the ground in the water areas in such a way that they do not move and the only way to kill them and reset the spawn is to use the /target command over and over and hope you get it that way and the target ring will show where it is. It is very useful to have a tracker helping you kill on this one until the graphics engine is hopefully ripped out in favor of the superior older engine...

The only tip I can give is kill everything and do not do this without a tracker. So many mobs appear invisible caught in the ground and stuck in trees if you don't have a tracker to find them you can't find enough to kill. I left the escorts alone and got one to spawn within the 8pm-5am time period. Then I kept tracking and killing and finally at 10am I got another escaped to spawn still with one escort still up. I'm not completely sure but maybe "an escaped froglok" is an impossible spawn until an escort is up and once at least one escort is up all you need to do is murder endlessly and the escaped frogloks are able to spawn anytime rarely. Again like all posts say kill in the newbie area and the island near it and just keep killing every mob that is not an escort but be sure that you first kill to spawn at least one escort by starting to kill at around 8pm game time...

    Found them
    # Dec 24 2003 at 1:17 AM Rating: Decent
Found them on 3 separate occasions now. I had tried for hours at a time for several days, then got a ranger friend to help me track them. Went to the swamp but nothing was there. So we killed everything in the newby area and the first island (also the west of the first island). Even killed the escorts, and the stuff in the water around the island (north and west sides). Then around 1 PM they started showing up. They show up in the newby area and the northern part of the first island (and in the water). All three times, its been the same. Kill everything, around 1 to 5 pm they spawn. I think the trick is to kill the placeholder(s) but I don’t know what they are, then they only spawn at certain times. On one occasion I found 3 of them. So far they always drop the shackle. Good luck…

I believe you turn training bag husk combined with 3 granite pebbles in to the shopkeeper in the Haggle Baron - same individual as the curscale armor quest.

I haven't tried it myself because I've only managed to find 1 Escaped Froglok Slave after DAYS of squishing mosquitos, leeches, and other slimy swamp denizens....I think my scales are growing fungus! ;)

Klok Mugruk inside the haggle baron tells you you need a sewing kit to do the combine. A loom would probably work just as well. Small sewing kit won't work, though, because there aren't enough slots.

I don't see what seems to be the problem with finding the escaped froglocks... I'n a period of less than an hour I encounted over ten of the buggers, three of which where clumped in a group together. Also, when I went to see the toilmaster, I only handed him one Shackle, and he handed over the granite pebbles. as it sits right now i've got six shackles in a backpack on my char...all I did was walk along the road that leads out to the island and back a couple of times to hit the froglocks..

    the real deal
    # Jun 04 2001 at 2:02 PM Rating: Default
ok heres the real deal, i just finished this quest after a day or two on and off of looking for the escaped frogs. the escaped ones can spawn at in place of any other frog, they are just very rare. I have killed 2 in the newbie area, although they are extremely rare compared to the first island along the road. They spawn on the first island about one in ten regular frog spawns. It seems to be that mosquitos, decaying skellies, and swamp leeches are the PH's for skellies, giant swamp leeches, marsh leeches, and large mosqitos. Those guys are all PH's for any frogs with froglok escorts being their rare spawns, and the escorts are PH's for escaped frogloks. All that means though is once you get on the island, don't stop killing till you get 6 shackles :(
    Spawning
    # Jun 04 2001 at 9:58 AM Rating: Default
I read somewhere that if a monster you want isn't spawing in an area then you should kill all the other monsters in that area. There are only so many "spots" for monsters, so killing monsters you don't want will open up spots for new monsters to spawn (hopefully the ones you want).

Seems to work for me when I'm looking for certain monster types.
