The Darkened Sea Info & Guides: Overview | Progression & Task List | Raiding | Visible Armor

This solo task is the third in a series of three. It begins with Historian Fjilnauk (click for map image) on Thuliasaur Island.

    Pre-Requisites for Requesting:
    - Minimum Level 95
    - Minimum apprehensive faction with The Kromtus
    - Completed "Honoring the Elders"
    - Completed "Recovering Our History"

Say "willing" to request the task.

    You say, 'Hail, Historian Fjilnauk'

Historian Fjilnauk says '_____, I am honored to see you again. I believe it is time I share the intent of my work here. You see, in additional to adhering to the tenet of strict pacifism, our tribe has forbidden all form of written language. Our entire history for several generations has been passed down from elder to child. I fear this means that much of our storied past has been lost. The memory of the elders grows ever more distant each day. I would not defy our laws by scribing what I know to stone but I do suspect there is much that can be learned if any lost artifacts of our tribe can be recovered. I humbly request, if you are [willing], that you set out in search of these relics and return them to me so that I can decipher what the elders cannot recall.''

You say, 'Yes, I am willing...'

Historian Fjilnauk says 'If any artifacts of our people still exist they will probably rest in the hands of other tribes. I cannot say where this may be, but someone as well traveled as you probably has a few ideas of where to start.'

You have been assigned the task 'Memories of the Kromtus'.

Historian Fjilnauk needs you to travel to the lands where the tribes of giants once united in service to Rallos and recover any artifact that may have belonged to the Kromtus clan.

The Dromrek clan that dwells in Goru`kar Mesa are among the most violent and simple giant tribes on Antonica. Scour their caves and see if anything out of the ordinary turns up.

In the foothills of Icefall Glacier in the lands called the Steppes there is an old Krithgorian burial site. Search the site for any relics that bear symbology foreign to the Krithgor clan.

Once you reach the gates of Valdeholm in Icefall Glacier, take note of the totems that stand on opposite sides of the narrow valley leading into the city. These monuments to Rallos are often constructed out of weapons and armor of fallen warriors. See if you can spot anything that might have belonged to the Kromtus clan.

At the far north end of the city of Valedholm you will find King Odeen's manor. Search the king's library for anything that may have some written history about our people.

Below the city of Valdeholm are the treacherous catacombs of their ancient dead. Take care as you delve deeper into this burial site. Look for the frozen Warlord as he oversees a small arena of battle. Search the statue's feet for any relic that has resisted the bitter cold.

    Unearth a Kromtus Runestone 0/1 (Goru`Kar Mesa)

Head to Goru`Kar Mesa and find a stone at /loc 50, 2020, 9. Click it to receive an "Anachronistic Kromtus Runestone".

You examine the runestone that sits precariously balanced on the stalagmite in the center of the cave. It has faded with age but you make out depictions of trees, blades and shields along with some text written in a language you can't quite make out. You pick up the runestone in hopes that it is in fact one of the Kromtus Relics.

Recover a Kromtus Shield 0/1 (The Steppes)

Head to the Steppes and find a shield at /loc 2580, -3, 160. Click it to receive a "Battered Kromtus Shield".

A battered shield sits discarded in the corner. Upon closer inspection you make out several inscriptions that have been marred by the wear of heavy battle, 'For one who will march while cowards hide and fall where heroes lie.' You hoist the large shield onto your back, assured that this is one of the ancient Kromtus relics.

Obtain a Kromtus Helm 0/1 (Icefall Glacier)

Head to Icefall Glacier and find a helmet at /loc 2310, -130, 705 (on top of the eastern totem). Click it to receive a "Worn Kromtus Helm".

A giant's helmet sits half buried in snow at the top of this monument. Its age is hardly apparent upon inspection due to the magnificence of its construction. The metal, though heavily dented, shines pristinely. You brace yourself against the stone monument below and pull with all of your might and are able to dislodge the ancient piece of armor from the snow.

Borrow a Tome of the Tribes 0/1 (Valdeholm)

Head to Valdeholm and find some books at /loc 3880, -985, 475. Click them to receive "Hoary Tome of the Tribes". This item is on top of one of the bookshelves. You might want to use levitate + a mount of some sort to get close enough to it.

You look up at the stack of tomes that rests atop the bookshelf, lodged between two volumes on royal lineage is a tome entitled, 'On the Tribes That Marched'. You pull the book down and look over the first few pages. You soon realize that the short tome gives a detailed account of every giant clan in Rallos' army at the time of his invasion on the Rathe. This will clearly be of interest to Historian Fjilnauk.

Exhume a Kromtus Longsword 0/1 (Frostcrypt, Throne of the Shade King)

Head to Frostcrypt and find a sword at /loc 1470, -365, -129. Click on it to receive "Ancient Kromtus Longsword". As with the Valdeholm update, you'll probably need a levitate effect or Rocketeer Boots to reach it. It's a giant sword on the statue's immediate east side.

To the side of the frozen statue of the Warlord sits a sword somehow kept in pristine condition. Shining runes are cut into the blade just above the hilt, their pattern matches other Kromtus relics that you have come across. You look around the room to ensure you are not being watched then carefully take the blade down from its resting place.

Bring the Kromtus Runestone to Historian Fjilnauk 0/1 (Thuliasaur Island)

Bring the Kromtus Shield to Historian Fjilnauk 0/1 (Thuliasaur Island)

Bring the Kromtus Helm to Historian Fjilnauk 0/1 (Thuliasaur Island)

Bring the Tome of the Tribes to Historian Fjilnauk 0/1 (Thuliasaur Island)

Bring the Kromtus Longsword to Historian Fjilnauk 0/1 (Thuliasaur Island)

Historian Fjilnauk looks upon the artifacts you have presented him in disbelief. He speaks with renewed excitement, 'Simply incredible! To finally know our tribe once tread upon so much of the world. These instruments of war speak to a time when we were strong, capable of winning wars and toppling nations. This tome speaks of a proud lineage of generals, elders whose lives ended on the field of battle rather than withering away in solitude.' The giant pauses then looks to the west, 'Something stirs near the village square. You should investigate, small one.'

An elder giant spirit has taken form in the center of town. Step closer to learn of its purpose.

Listen to the ancient Kromtus spirit 0/1 (Thuliasaur Island)

Task Window Says: An old Kromtus spirit has taken form in the center of town. Stand in its presence and listen to what it has to say. Should the spirit be preoccupied by another or you fail to heed its words, return to Historian Fjilnauk and speak to him to have the spirit make a new appearance.

Upon turning in all five items, "The Spirit of Hjirvlauk" a short distance southwest of the Historian. Stand near it while it tells a story, and be prepared for mob aggro. Soon, 1x "a restless shade" spawns and attack (max hit ~17,000; immune to mez; but is rootable/snareable; five-minute timer to kill). Soon after its death, another 2x "a restless shade" spawn and attack (same abilities; 8-minute timer to kill).

If you fail the encounter or otherwise leave it idle after having spawned it, you can hail the Historian to respawn it. The same applies if you're having to wait for another player to do it.

Failure to kill the ambush mobs within their timers will cause the encounter to reset.

You need to be closer to the ancient giant's spirit to hear it.

The giant looks down at you, its ethereal face contorted in an expression of remorse. Without moving its mouth its voice consumes your thoughts, but he speaks in words you do not understand.

In your mind you see the Kromtus runestone, it is affixed to a battered suit of armor that rests upon the chest of a mighty warrior. The sky behind the warrior is blood red. The shouting of battle begins to overtake your ears right before the vision is lost.

The giant spirit's voice continues speaking to you and suddenly images of the now battered Kromtus shield coalesce into something lucid. The shield appears to you, unmarred with battle scars. It sits with several identical replicas in an armory. Your vision turns from the armory to several orcs that stand nearby. You quickly shake your head and regain sight of the land you stand in.

The spirit begins to move its hands in an elaborate gesture before calming its motions and drawing its fingers over the top of its head. You think back to the snow covered helmet you unearthed in Icefall Glacier atop the Valdeholm post.

Suddenly a second spirit takes form. This one does not appear to be as friendly!

a restless shade says 'Die coward!'

a restless shade has been slain by _____!
    a restless shade says 'Soon...'

That giant's attention returns to you, its gestures now smooth. Its foreign words carry a friendlier tone, it seems to be thankful. It continues to speak at length but little makes sense. Of all its words the only syllables that stick with you are what sounds like a name, 'Hjirvlauk?. You repeat the name, 'Hjirvlauk' and the shade nods slowly.

The spirit holds out its tightly clenched right fist. It places its left fist over it and moves its left arm up slowly, as if expressing the shape of a blade. He swings his right hand to the side and points the imaginary blade toward the sky. His disembodied voice turns to a shout then to heartfelt laughter and finally a sigh.

The spirit's gestures are suddenly interrupted by two voices, shouting in unison in common tongue!

    a restless shade shouts, 'Hjirvlauk!'
a restless shade says 'Our blood is on your hands!'

a restless shade has been slain by _____!
a restless shade says 'Death is no escape.'

a restless shade has been slain by _____!
a restless shade says 'Narikor will soon claim you!'

The spirit of Hjirvlauk takes a final look around the village of giants that appear oblivious to his presence then returns his attention to you. A sense of mutual respect resonates between the two of you. He holds out his hand and points toward the Kromtus historian that remains enraptured by Hjirvlauk's earthly artifacts. The spirit nods, its disembodied voice now simply a whisper in your mind as it says its last word and the first word you are able to make sense of, 'Peace'.

Speak to Historian Fjilnauk 0/1 (Thuliasaur Island)

Task Window Says: Return to Historian Fjilnauk to tell him what you have learned from the shade of Hjirvlauk.

    You say, 'Hail, Historian Fjilnauk'

Historian Fjilnauk listens intently as you recount the elaborate pageantry of Hjirvlauk's spirit and the harrowing battle of the enraged undead. The historian remains stoic as his expression changes from interest to wonder as if a great revelation has just dawned upon him. He speaks, turning his attention to the nearest elder then back to you, 'Everything you have told me suggests that we did in fact march proudly in the Warlord's army and now suffer for it. Yet we possess the capacity to recover while others do not. Yes, our elders forbade written language and violence for this very reason, so that we could escape the cycle of war. Small one, I have no treasures great enough to express the depths of my gratitude for what you have shown me today. Please, accept this humble offering and know that I am eternally grateful for your help.'

It seems the elders' refusal to pass on the tribe's history to successive generations may have been an intentional one. Historian Fjilnauk will have to reflect upon whether or not he truly wishes to preserve the tribe's past.

Goru'Kar Mesa: This rock is in the middle of the cave room up off the floor on the little split pillar.
Valdehom: I walked against one of the wall pillars to get high enough to get to the bookshelf level 1 above the floor. From there, as others said, hit F9 to change camera angle and you should be able to click the book.
    The rest are pretty straight-forward.

This was frustrating, the items where just out of reach. What finely worked was as follows.
For the books, if you levitate (look up) while running toward the chairs on the end of the table, from the side, you can get on the table. From the table top, you can levitate over the back of a chair to the bookcase and use F9 to click the books, F9 does not work from the floor. Do not try this from the side of the table or you could get stuck under the table like I did, I had a hard time getting out, I could not move in any direction and I tried ducking that was worse, I could not stand or sit so I could not move or camp, I used task manager to end the program and log back on but found myself back under that table when I logged back on, but standing so I could sit and stand while under the table. I could not move using the mouse but somehow was finely able to move using the keyboard to get out, it turns out while sitting you move slightly forward before standing up using the keyboard, does not work with the mouse, I have been playing for years and did not know this, live and learn.
For the sword you, can levitate along the side of the wall to on top of a table and from there levitate to the podium and the sword.

If your whole group is doing this quest you will have to perform the final fights for each group member. Whoever hails the Historian to trigger the spirit is the toon for whom the fights that follows are for. The spawned shades are inclined to attack this person, especially the final two, so be prepared for your cleric to get immediate agro, if the fights are for him. The shades aren't very tough---much easier than the zone trash. Any decent tank can fight them together and they die fast. They will despawn if the toon who spawned them dies. You just hail the Historian to restart the step.

I want really know which Boots you mean. Nobody in general chat could help me with that.... ?!?
Farting with fire at the back does not help either.

So I had an enchanter who casted Levitation and Ogre Illusion and I took my mount.
In Valdeholm I got on the table and from there on levitated to the bookshelf. That was enough for the books.
At frostcrypt no mount is possible (indoor), so Ogre Illusion was enough to reach the sword.

For the sword in Frostcrypt, I had to lev, strafe up the wall a bit, get on a table and then lev across to the platform the sword is on. For the books in Valdeholm, I strafed up the wall, lev'd over to the big table, got on the back of the chair, lev'd over to the bookcase right under the books, scrolled my camera view out as far as it would go and then moved the camera so it was above me looking down. I was then able to click the books. What a PITA!
