A praetor shade wanders near the quest-giver so don't hang out there afk unless you have IVU on.
The scraps appear on the cursor of everyone in the group who needs them after every 3rd kill.
The shades all seem to be enchanters and they regularly would mez the tank. Be forewarned!
On FV if you already have the Skeletal Parrot augment (through trade) and you do these missions you will NOT get the option for the parrot "parts." Evidently the parts are in the same lore group as the final combine. So if you want to work toward a second one, park your augment in the shared bank space when completing the final steps.

NOTE: The area around Maetanrus is not safe. One of the roaming undead mobs comes within aggro range of this NPC. Pre-Requisites for Requesting: - Minimum Level 95 Say "punish" to request the task. You say, 'Hail, Maetanrus' Maetanrus remains transfixed upon the shore, looking at your reflection in the water rather than meeting your address directly, 'Another ill fated traveler washed up on the beach? No matter, the gods do not aim to [punish] you as they have me.' You say, 'They don't punish them?' Maetanrus shakes his head, turning his gaze back to his own reflection now, 'See for yourself, _____. Watch how they aimlessly wander, bound here eternally for one reason or another. At least I've held on to enough of my sanity to know what keeps me here.' You have been assigned the task 'The Lost Observations'. The spirit of Maetanrus, a Combine scholar who was among the first to land on the island, longs to recover the pages of careful observation he compiled during his short life upon the island. The restless shades that roam the beach and the ruined observatory were once men and women of the expedition parties that became stranded on the island. There spirits now roam aimlessly unable to pass on to the planes nor the Realm of Heroes. Free these souls from their torture by destroying their anchored shades. Search the ethereal shades for remnants of Maetanrus' tome. Put some of the restless shades to rest 0/9 (Thuliasaur Island) Kill nine undead mobs (praetor shades, indagator shades, corricaux shades, and indagatrix shades count -- all are found along the beach and among the ruins on the southern part of the island). Obtain three Torn Tome Scraps 0/3 (Thuliasaur Island) As you kill mobs for this task, you'll receive 3x "Torn Tome Scraps". Had two Torn Tome Scraps drop while killing the 9 restless shades. Then killed shades for another couple of hours and didn't get the last Torn Tome Scrap to drop. Removed myself from the task and then got again it from Maetanrus - immediately received credit for the two scraps I already had and then the third scrap dropped on the first mob I killed. Looks like the scraps only drop off the first nine mobs and if you don't get three then best to drop the task and get it again.
