The Darkened Sea Info & Guides: Overview | Progression & Task List | Raiding | Visible Armor

This solo task is the second in a series of three and begins with Ellen Kwiklen (click for map image) in the Caverns of Endless Song. She is located in the small area above water just south of the underwater zone-in tunnel.

Pre-Requisites for Requesting:
- Completion of "Natural Instincts"

Say "inferno venom" to request the task.

At the end of the previous task, you saw:

Well done. These beetle corpses will come in handy for the next step of my master plan. You've done some mushroom farming in the past I'm certain? No?! Well there's no time like the [present].

You say, 'The present?'

Ellen Kwiklen says 'Now that we've got the beetles back to their old ways we can start dealing with the real problem in these caverns, the sirens. But if we want to get at the sirens we're going to have to go through their minions, and I know just the thing to sidestep some of that problem. We're going to make some [Inferno Venom].'

You say, 'Hail, Ellen Kwiklen'

Ellen Kwiklen says 'Hello again _____. Are you ready to help me gather up the ingredients for some [inferno venom] yet? Or are you still concerned with the [natural order] in the caverns?'

You say, 'How do we make Inferno Venom?'

Ellen Kwiklen says 'The fire coral that grows in the water of these tunnels has a particularly potent venom that can cause deafness in most humanoids. Temporarily. Usually. So I've been told. We need to get our hands on some of that venom. As reticent as I am to destroy the coral, we have little choice at this point. You'll need some protective gloves if you're going to be handling that inferno venom. The sharks in the caverns have developed a resistance to the venom. Go and get me a pristine gray shark hide and I'll make you a pair of gloves that should let you harvest the coral without deafening, or worse, killing yourself. While you're swimming around, get some bladefish meat as well. We'll need it to collect the suspension we'll use for the venom.'

You have been assigned the task 'Fishy Fingers'.

Ellen Kwiklen has a plan to break the sirens' control over the Caverns of Endless Song. She'll need you to collect some components in order to make some inferno venom.

Collect bladefish meat 0/5 (Caverns of Endless Song)

Find a pristine grey shark hide 0/1 (Caverns of Endless Song)

Task Window Says: Ellen needs several pieces of bladefish meat to make into plant food. Collect a pristine grey shark hide so Ellen can make you a set of gloves to harvest coral with.

The items you're looking for are "Bladefish Meat" (roughly 30-40% drop rate from any "bladefish" mobs in the zone) and "Pristine Gray Shark Hide" (dropped by hammerheads in the zone; this item might only drop if everyone in your group is on the same task, but this is not confirmed - if this is the case, the check is at the time of the mob's death and anyone without the task can drop right before the mob dies).

These mobs are scattered about most/all underwater areas in the zone.

Deliver the bladefish meat to Ellen Kwiklen 0/5 (Caverns of Endless Song)

Ellen Kwiklen says, Perfect _____. This will do nicely.' She begins to mix crushed beetle corpses with the fish meat to make a chunky mess of organic matter. It smells repugnant. 'This,' she says as she hands you the sticky mixture, 'is going to be the fertilizer for the mushroom farming that I mentioned earlier. We need to ensure the plants will be able to recover when we harvest from them. Place some of it on a patch of fungus and it should inspire some growth. Be warned, I placed a rather potent enchantment on it, so it'll be very fast acting. It's likely that the plant will even become...aggressive. Best step lively when using it.'

You receive "Ellen's Plant Food".

Deliver the pristine grey shark hide to Ellen Kwiklen 0/5 (Caverns of Endless Song)

Ellen Kwiklen peers over the skin, inspecting it for any signs of damage. 'Indeed _____, this will work nicely.' She pulls out a set of leatherworking tools and quickly fashions a set of shark hide gloves for you. 'You'll need to use these to harvest the coral. Now be careful not to take too much of it from any one plant, or you'll kill the whole colony and I'll be very displeased. Possibly homicidal. You don't know me. At any rate bring the coral back quickly with the fungal suspension and we'll mix up some inferno venom.'

You receive "Shark Hide Gloves".

Collect endless fungus by fertilizing endless fungus patches 0/5 (Caverns of Endless Song)

Collect fire coral by using the shark hide gloves 0/5 (Caverns of Endless Song)

Task Window Says: Use Ellen's Plant Food to fertilize endless fungus patches and then collect fungus samples. Use the shark hide gloves to collect fire coral samples from several fire coral plants.

For the endless fungus, find "an endless fungus patch" scattered in above-water areas and right-click Ellen's Plant Food to spawn "an enraged fungus":

You spread some of the plant food around the base of the fungus patch. Almost immediately it beings to grow before your eyes. Moments later the mushroom transforms into a fungus man, ravenous for more of Ellen's plant food.

"an enraged fungus" is not social with animal mobs in the zone (can be pulled through them without assist aggro), but is social with pirates, who will assist it (maybe they really like their plants). The fungus is of average difficulty for base mob population in the zone (hit for a max ~15,500; mezzable; rootable/snareable; stunnable). Loot "Endless Fungus" from its corpse (x5, not a guaranteed drop).

For the firal coral, find "a fire coral plant" throughout the water tunnels in the northern part of the zone, /target them, and right-click the gloves:

The gloves work perfectly and you easily harvest a small piece of coral from the plant.

Obtain 5x "Fire Coral" this way.

Deliver the endless fungus to Ellen Kwiklen 0/5 (Caverns of Endless Song)

Ellen Kwiklen says, 'Good work _____. These samples will do nicely. I trust the fungus didn't object too much to being harvested? Oh? Well you can't expect all of nature to be as reasonable and good looking as I am now can we _____?' She takes the fungus from you and weaves a spell that cause tiny droplets of liquid to emerge from the fungus and float silently across the air to rest inside of a small vial that Ellen is holding. The fungus soon crumbles to dust when all of its moisture has been spent. 'One ingredient down, and one to go. Oh I'll also be needing that plant food back. It'll do wonders for my roses back in Rivervale.'

Deliver the coral to Ellen Kwiklen 0/5 (Caverns of Endless Song)

Ellen Kwiklen holds out what appears to be a sharkskin bag to accept the pieces of coral from you. You imagine she sewed it together from the scraps left over from your gloves. 'Nicely done _____. I trust you didn't break too much off of any one plant as I instructed? I'll also be needing those gloves so I can go about collecting the venom without poisoning myself.'

Return Ellen's plant food 0/1 (Caverns of Endless Song)

Ellen Kwiklen says 'Thank you _____. My neighbors will be so jealous of my garden.'

Return the shark skin gloves 0/1 (Caverns of Endless Song)

Ellen Kwiklen takes the gloves from you and mumbles a spell as she puts them on her hands. They magically resize so as to perfectly fit. 'I'll need a few moments to milk the coral for the venom and mix it with the suspension before its ready.' Ellen goes about her work for a few moments as you look on silently. It isn't long before she reappears with a glistening [dirk] in her hands.

I just killed about 30 sharks for 1 hide, and about 40 blade fish for 5 flesh. It is really not common. If they upped the drops, they've since been lowered again.

Thanks, changed the hide and meat to uncommon on their item pages.

Just completed this for 3 characters, took about 45 minutes to get all the drops. They seemed uncommon, but definitely not rare.

Definitely not rare, at least not nowadays. We killed 4 sharks and got drops like this: 1-1-3-1. Yes, we got 3 off one kill.

A good spot to pharm sharks and bladefish is reached as follows. Make your way to the siren room, swim thru their lake, get to the giant coral and drop down one level. There's a circular ledge with an opening in the middle that looks down on a vast subterranean water area with lots of sharks, bladefish, turtles and barracudas. You can pull almost anything with a good bow and if you're careful get singles or at most one add. No fishes path thru this ledge area. Otherwise the water below is brutal to fight in because fishes can add to fights out of seemingly nowhere due to the gronky z-axis agro.

I did not find the Pristine Grey Shark Hide all that rare. Less than 10 kills dropped enough for four of us. It continued to drop so long as at least one group member had not received the task update.

I cannot be sure, but my sense is that any of the fish could alternate spawns, including the barracuda. We killed all types and that seemed to produce a steady stream of bladefish.

First.. the Endless Fungus mob will stop spawning after you have finished your update ( IE can't use the same puller unless he is the last to loot)

Second, the Sharks (hammerheads) and Bladefish seems to be alternate spawns. The deep open area near Katelyn Grubson's spawn area is a nice spot that is spaced out. Or underwater area in the northern most area of the map ( same place as the fire coral) has a lot of spawn.

The pristine grey shark hide seems to be a rare drop. Killed some 30+ sharks per drop
