Call of the Forsaken Info & Guides: Overview | Progression & Task List | Raiding | Visible Armor

About Heroic Adventures

- Heroic adventures in Call of the Forsaken scale in level: As low as Level 75 and up to current maximum level.
- Scale is based on the highest level player present in the zone and affects difficulty, loot quality, and mob levels.
- There is some variation/randomization in the task steps you'll be assigned as you progress through the task.
- Time of completion will vary by your group's makeup (anywhere from 30-90+ minutes).
- Collection items appear as ground spawns midway through tasks (you'll see an emote indicating their appearance).
- Named mobs (or their PHs) spawn midway through tasks (usually, but always, at the same time collection items appear).
- These tasks have individual 3-hour lockout timers (timer gained upon completion).

Experience in Heroic Adventures

- Mobs in these instances grant some experience, but the bulk of experience is earned upon task completion.
- As of a patch in November 2014, less difficult tasks were tuned to reward less experience and more difficult ones were tuned to reward more.
- For an added experience bonus, check out Guard Hamarn's "Daily Tasks".

This is a heroic adventure (1-6 players) that begins with Captain Russell Cooper (click for map) in the Dead Hills. He is located at about -845, -345, 65 (in the clearing north of the zone-in/dock area).

TASK IN DETAIL

========================================================================
TRIGGERING THE TASK
========================================================================

You say, 'Hail, Captain Russell Cooper'

Captain Russell Cooper says 'Another bright-eyed recruit, eh? Well ya might as well get to [work]. I'd give ya the grand tour but there's too much to be done in too little time. Maybe if ya survive yer first assignment, we'll have more to discuss.'

You say, 'What work?'

Captain Russell Cooper says 'Just head that way 'til ya meet up with Scout Lienweathar. He'll be standing by the makeshift ladder.'

You have been assigned the task 'Clearing a Path'.

If the expedition of archaeologists and scouts it to have any luck reaching the Qeynosian ruins, they are going to need your help clearing a path through the unforgiving terrain. Meet up with Scout Adam Nevins and work with him to clear a path through the hostile flora and fauna. One of our scout leaders forged a path several days ago, but we have not heard back from him in quite some time. Hopefully, he has not fallen victim to the treacherous hills...

Make your way northwest to Scout Gatius Lienweathar, and then click the ladder next to him to zone into the instance.

You say, 'Hail, Scout Gatius Lienweathar'

Scout Gatius Lienweathar says 'Ah, _____, it is good to see you. Just over this ladder is your destination. I'm sure Captain Russell has filled you in on all of the details.'

LOADING, PLEASE WAIT...
You have entered The Dead Hills.

Scout Adam Nevins says 'Ah good, _____. You're just in time. Scout Leader Zatkin was last reported to have traveled down this path before losing contact. Given the number of beasts that infest the area, it's no wonder he hasn't made it back yet. If you need to return to camp for any provisions then just head back down the road you took to get here.' The half elf's composure wavers for a moment as he sighs, 'I hope Ryan is all right.'

========================================================================
STEP #1
========================================================================

Clear the roadway of rats 0/10 (Dead Hills)

Task Window Says: Our weaker scouts are finding it impossible to progress any further while being accosted by giant rats. It would be immensely helpful to our cause if you could clear the road of these pox-bearing beasts.

If You Get This Step: Kill any 10 rats along the path.

=====================

Destroy the rat's nests along the road 0/4 (Dead Hills)

Task Window Says: We need you to clear away any rat's nests you come across as you make your way down the ancient roads toward the ruins.

If You Get This Step: Several "a scavenger nest" lie in your path. Destroying them (damage/spells) spawns 2x "a vicious pup" that are relatively simple kills. Killing these adds isn't required for the task, but they have a large aggro range.

=====================

Kill the undead that are halting the scouting party's progress 0/10 (Dead Hills)

Task Window Says: The scouting party's progress into the hills has hit its first stumbling block. It seems the spirits that still inhabit the ruins aim to keep intruders out of their home. The spectres have proven too strong for our party to take on alone, so we need your help in clearing a path so we can move forward.

If You Get This Step: Kill any 10 undead mobs. Note that the fallen disciples seem to put out the most DPS (flurries). Mobs here hit for a max ~13,000 (blue cons) to ~15,500 (yellow cons).

========================================================================
STEP #2
========================================================================

Collect substance samples from the local oozes 0/5 (Dead Hills)

Task Window Says: We have heard reports that aberrations of caustic acid have come to life and are devouring any foreign creature that crosses their path. If we are to understand how to combat these sentient slimes we will need substance samples so we can formulate weaponry and antidotes. Dispose of any oozes you come across and collect samples for testing.

If You Get This Step: Kill "a _____ muck" mobs until you've collected 5x "Ooze Sample". These are uncommon drops.

=====================

Obtain Necromantic Samples for later study 0/5 (Dead Hills)

Task Window Says: A number of the undead inhabitants found in the hills radiate with increased power. It would be helpful to our cause if you could collect samples of whatever it is that is empowering these undead as you are clearing the path toward the tower.

If You Get This Step: Kill undead mobs until you've collected 5x "Necromantic Sample".

=====================

Collect samples of Floral Animating Force 0/5 (Dead Hills)

Task Window Says: ?

If You Get This Step: Kill ivymaws and mantraps until you've collected 5x "Floral Animating Force".

========================================================================
STEP #3
========================================================================

Inspect the remains of ancient Qeynosian weaponry 0/5 (Dead Hills)

Task Window Says: ?

If You Get This Step: You'll find decaying weaponry around the area. Get close to them, /target them, and do "/inspect" (can be done with all forms of invis without breaking it).

=====================

Inspect the remains of ancient Qeynosian fishing boats 0/5 (Dead Hills)

Task Window Says: As you make your way through the hills, inspect the remains of any fishing boats the ancient Qeynosian expedition party may have build while trying to survive here.

If You Get This Step: You'll find rickety vessels around the coastline of the water in the zone. Get close to them, /target them, and do "/inspect" (can be done with all forms of invis without breaking it; note, however, that ooze mobs see invis).

=====================

Inspect the remains of ancient Qeynosian pottery 0/5 (Dead Hills)

Task Window Says: As you make your way through the hills, inspect the remains of pottery the ancient Qeynosian expedition party may have built while trying to survive here.

If You Get This Step: You'll find supply urns around the area. Get close to them, /target them, and do "/inspect" (can be done with all forms of invis without breaking it).

========================================================================
STEP #4
========================================================================

Clear a path along the route to Scout Zatkin 0/10 (Dead Hills)

Task Window Says: We fear our Scout Leader may have fallen prey to the innumerable dangers in these hills. If he is still alive, then the beasts of the hills must have him trapped. Dispose of any creatures found near the end of this leg of the trail so that he can return back to camp.

If You Get This Step: Clear mobs from the path northwest of the Scout Leader's location. Only mobs in this relative area count towards this step.

=====================

Search through the containers near the end of the route 0/5 (Dead Hills)

Task Window Says: As you make your way down the road in search of our Scout Leader keep an eye out for any supplies that may have been abandoned. Collect them as you progress, they will be invaluable to the scouting party that follows in your steps

If You Get This Step: Open the Small Supply Cache via /open

=====================

A spectre blocks your path! Defeat Commander William Helsel 0/1 (Dead Hills)

Task Window Says: It seems that our Scout Leader is unable to return to us because of a fearsome spectre that haunts the road. Clear the final leg of this path by putting the ancient Qeynosian spirit to rest.

If You Get This Step: Kill the named mob "Commander William Helsel". This seems to be a standard undead mob with a bloated amount of hitpoints (~5.5 million). No AEs or adds.

========================================================================
STEP #5
========================================================================

Speak to Scout Leader Ryan Zatkin 0/1 (Dead Hills)

Task Window Says: Meet up with Scout Leader Ryan Zatkin and work out what must be done next.

If You Get This Step: Hail the Scout Leader to complete the task.

You say, 'Hail, Scout Leader Ryan Zatkin'

Scout Leader Ryan Zatkin says 'Fine work clearing the road there...' He pauses and looks panicked as he realizes that he does not know your name, '_____.' He smiles, reassured that he tip-toed gracefully around that faux pas. He continues, 'So the scouts thought I was dead? I'm surprised they had so little faith in me that they elected me leader and yet don't have the confidence that I can survive my job.' He laughs, thinking himself to be the most hilarious speaker around. 'No matter then. Thank you for your efforts. This stone should take you back to camp. I'll be along shortly to brief the officers on what I've found.'

We are relieved to hear that Ryan is alive and well. The information he gathered will be invaluable in our efforts to push forward and discover the mystery of these ruins. The entire crew is grateful for your valiant effort today.

Collect samples of Floral Animating Force 0/5 (Dead Hills)
These hills are never at a loss of creatures trying to halt our progress. Even the local flora is hostile to our ingress. It would be quite helpful if you could eliminate any treacherous plants that get in your way and collect samples of their animating force for our study.

Guaranteed not obtainable at lvl 75. I went by way of Teek in PoK last night with a group of 5 lvl 83's and 1 lvl 85. When Teek ported me to the Dead Hills and I spoke with Captain Russell I got the message 'A bit far from home, aren't you?' but he would not give me the shared task. This occurred for everyone that was 83. When the level 85 requested the task she was able to get it for the group. Unfortunately, the tank at 83 was unable to handle the lvl 87-89 mobs with his 10 year old raid gear, they just scaled too far past his ability to handle. We also tried to drop the 85 chanter but still got the message:

'A bit far from home, aren't you?'

And so we were unable to request the task at all.

Think it might be the same as Marla and the min level requirement is 85.

This is a very task, not even sure why they bothered. There are no mobs at the end of the road, so all you have to do is walk up to the 7 or 8 containers (barrels and boxes) and target them and /open then right click to loot Small Supply Cache, one you loot 5 you are done.

Steps encountered at level 100 solo:
  • Destroy the rat's nests along the road ....... 0/4
  • Collect substance samples from the local oozes ....... 0/5
  • Inspect the remains of ancient Qeynosian fishing boats ....... 0/5
  • A spectre blocks your path! Defeat Commander William Helsel ....... 0/1
  • Speak to Scout Leader Ryan Zatkin ....... 0/1

What to do for each step:
  • Several "A scavenger nest" lie in your path. Destroying them (damage/spells) pops two small rats named "a vicious pup" that seemed like pretty easy kills. The pups themselves were not required for the task, but they had a giant agro range, so it was easier to just clear them for me.
  • Loot 5x "Ooze Sample" from "an acidic muck" or "an acrid muck"
  • Find 5x fishing boats (on the water to the north and northwest), target them, and /inspect. This did not spawn adds, but the boats were surrounded by SI oozes and undead. It was easiest for me to Harmshield and /inspect all of the boats before FDing.
  • Kill 1x "Commander William Helsel". No surprises, really, just an undead mob with ~5.5 million HP, avg hit slowed on pet was 5427
  • Hail Scout Leader Ryan Zatkin at the end of the chasm

This task took a pretty long time solo, just due to the number of SI mobs / clearing necessary

All the Named mobs, for each particular mission and regardless of random steps, drop one gear slot with a one-slot and two-slot version of the same loot. In other words if you ran the same mission fifty times, you'd still get only gear slot filled (shoulders for instance).

The chance to spawn a Named, appears to happen when you have done everything but the last step (ready for turn-in). Not sure if the instance/task mechanics allow the instance to stay up for the entire 6 hours if you turn in the last step so we always killed the Named first, then turned in the last step.

If the named does not spawn, a PH mob will spawn in its place. The chance to spawn a Named appears to be random. We've had anywhere from 1-3 Named mobs spawn under exactly the same conditions (everything dead).

With the above caveats, we've seen these drops from this mission:

https://everquest.allakhazam.com/db/item.html?item=113720
https://everquest.allakhazam.com/db/item.html?item=113230

from any of three named mobs:

After 3 sttep cleared, Lietenant Robert Ward spawn in middle of lamp toward to Scout Leader Ryan. It was easy to pass through him, but I challenged him.
He hit no so hard but use random targeted fear and AE rampage. Healer mercenary got fear frequently caused heal to tank interrepted. If you have enough dps and tank and healer, you may win.
What to expect.

Thank you Patrizia.
I'm not certain if these mission steps come as packaged deals (certain combinations of all the steps) or if each step is totally random (making for 81 possible combinations of required steps) BUT:

From each step you only have to do one option. Our 2nd time through didn't have any of the same steps where there was multiple options.

Not sure where they came up with 30 minutes. Even 90 would be hard. We've not managed to crack 2 hours yet and we've run 5 total. Not sticking chest hairs out because there are surely groups that would scoff at our pittance DPS but, as a point of reference, we drop about 5 mobs per minute in VoL pulling doubles and triples. Singles take about 20 seconds

Trying to make an easier mission: Took the quest with 96s and 97s. We only got 5 rats next, the rest was the same. If the mobs were any easier than our first run (a few nights ago) it wasn't a lot.

Finesse versus kill everything:
Our score: Getting fancy: 3 hrs + 10 toon deaths during that time.
Killing everything in sight: 3 hrs + 0 toon deaths.

BOSSES: I believe it was our second run of #1 but could have been a second #3. We got three bosses with non-vis drops equivalent to RoF tier 4. In our case all the bosses dropped shoulders, two of them were identical, one was a two-slot version (Any/Any but SK recommended with good heroic dex and agility). Our main group didn't want them but our PLee SK and Shammy both picked up one. Guessing the loot is either locked by run or by mission.

As an addendum to the above: Now on the second time through I see that the mission changes. This time I have to kill 10 undead, collect 5 floral animating forces and inspect fishing boats instead of ceramic urns. Mob disposition along the road is a little different also. So clearly the basic pattern of the missions remain the same but the tasks along the way will vary slightly.
cooper #1
# Oct 11 2013 at 9:57 PM Rating: Default
task is actually much simpler than above. You do have to clear the road but there is not set number of rats to kill. You do have to kill 5 nests and upon killing each nest 2 more rats spawn. As you run farther down the road you will see plants. These also need to be killed and looted for floral animating force. looks like a mint leaf. You need 5. There are also ceramic pots along the way that have a big yellow swirling image above them like smoke. You have to /inspect these. Quite often they are guarded by 1 or 2 mobs which have to be cleared. They are not always within sight of the road and you may have to look off the road down near the lake or on the hills above to see them. So kill 5 nests, collect 5 leaves, inspect 5 pots and you can then go to the end and kill the named. Seemed to be a straight melee type of fight. There are See Invis along the road, some are dead like skellies or zombies but some of the plants can also SI. Usually the squat bush types not the flowers. A named will spawn somewhere. Don't need to kill it to complete but you will get an achievement. You hail the Scout Zatkin at the end of the road to finish.Took me almost 3 hours to get through it the first time. Will be less next time around. Did it with a 100 necro plus merc tank, boxed 100 druid plus merc healer and boxed 100 shaman plus merc healer. We got about 150 Mark of Valor each. Next time I would pop an LoD as I start clearing my way in.
