Vira may be found at +410, +85.

You say, 'Hail, Vira'

Vira says 'I am Vira, elementalist of Solusek Ro. I guard the secrets of the tools of [elemental summoning]. If you are a magician, you might be interested.'

You say, 'What is elemental summoning?'

Vira says 'I hold the secrets to the construction of four tools which assist magicians with the summoning of elementals. I know about the [broom of Trilon], the [shovel of Ponz], the [torch of Alna] and the [stein of Ulissa].'

You say, 'What of the shovel of Ponz?'

Vira says 'The shovel of Ponz was crafted by the earthen master of the same name. Are you [interested] in the [shovel]?'

You say, 'I am interested in the shovel.'

Vira says 'I will create a replica of the shovel of Ponz for you, but I will need the following components to make it: a ruby, the eyes of a gargoyle, a shovel from a magician in Najena and the toes of a hill giant. Bring me these four components, and I will construct for you an object of elemental power.'

A Ruby may be bought from a jewelry merchant. Gargoyle Eyes drop from various gargoyles around the world. Hill Giant Toes drop from various hill giants around the world. A Shovel drops from magicians in Najena or alligators in the Feerrott or Lake Rathetear. Hand in the four items.

Vira says 'Each of the four items needed to construct the famed Shovel of Ponz! Very well. As you have displayed ingenuity, I grant you this shovel.'
Your faction standing with Temple Of Sol Ro got better.
Your faction standing with Shadowed Men got worse.
You gain experience!!

You receive the Shovel of Ponz.

getting most of the items but the broom is easy. getting the toes isn't. but i found where you might find all the toes needed for the focous item quest, its in the oot at the High elf that sells the lv 16-20 mage spells. Hope this helps.

I was able to buy all the toes (and Gargoyle eye) from various merchants in Firiona Vie. Cost me about 40-50pp total.

Where to buy Hill Giant Toes
# Jan 27 2001 at 9:21 PM Rating: Default
There's a woman in the gypsy camp in North Karana who sells these toes for approximately 8pp. It's the same woman who is involved in the lightstone quest.

If you saw her selling these toes for 8pp, it's because someone sold them to her. Go try to buy them from her just after a patch when the vendor inventory is reset, and you will not find them.

Some people just hate quests, I guess... I agree with you though, this group of quests is a must for all mages, to the point that if you don't do it you're shortchanging yourself.
Things I Learned...
# Dec 20 2000 at 1:06 AM Rating: Default
I did this quest several times before I got it right, and I wanted to post some ways to avoid the mistakes I made.
First DON"T HAIL THE EFREETI! By simply hailing the efreeti in in the temple, you will damage your faction, and your faction must be at least indifferent to succeed.
Second, give all the items to Vira at once. I read not to do this before trying the second time, and for seom reason after giving here the fourth item... nothing happened.
Now a few things I did just to be safe ( I wasn't about to take chances the third go round). I indentified all the items (broom, stein, shovel, torch) before giving them to Vira. I hailed Vira, and talked to her about the quest each time too (I did all 4 focus items at the same time). I didn't just hand her the items. I also made sure to hand the items to her in the same order in which she asked for them.

Good Luck All... Praise Innoruk!!

Do you have to hold it all the time?
# Dec 05 2000 at 2:24 PM Rating: Default
Do you need to be holding the staff the whole time your pet is alive? Or can you just unequip the staff after you have summoned your pet?
RE: Do you have to hold it all the time?
# Dec 06 2000 at 11:07 AM Rating: Default
Nope.

Once you summon your pet, you can store the shovel.
Faction & Focus
# Nov 30 2000 at 11:42 PM Rating: Default
To improve faction with SolRo you can turn in Derv Rings to Ortallis (sp?) the Orc Paladin (yes Paladin) who is in either Oasis or South Ro (I forget which). I think you turn the rings in four at a time.

As was said, focus items have no effect on the level of the pet (you're just as likely to get a green), but pets summoned using a focus item will be stronger. Verant says that the focus item begin working at level 34. Most people think they work earlier. I've been using the stein for sixteen and 20th level pets. It *seems* to make a difference, but the pets are physically the same. At 34th, the pets will be physically larger when summoned using a focus item.

Quoting magecompendium.com on these focus items:

Note: Focus Items only have to be held while summoning an elemental to be effective, there is no minimum player level for these items to be used.

Focus Items will only function on summons from level 4 to 49, Staffs of Elemental Mastery will function on summons from level 49 to 60 (Not including the Decoy summons). The four focus objects available from the Temple of Solusek Ro enhance particular attributes of a pet. Because each pet has inherent natural attributes, each focus object works differently on each pet type.

Earth Elementals : Shovel of Ponz
These pets have the most hit points of any pet. Because of this the focus objects do not add any extra hit points to the pets. Rather the pets get extra strength, agility and other stats to help them dodge a little better and hit for higher damages.

Water Elementals : Stein of Ulissa
A Water Elemental summoned with a focus object obtains the same number of hit points as an earth elemental of the same level summoned with no focus object. They also receive boosted stats.

Air Elemental : Broom of Trilon
An Air Elemental summoned with a focus object gets a hit point bonus making it have approximately the same hit points as a water elemental summoned without a focus object of the same level. They receive less statistical bonus than the water elemental.

Fire Elementals : Torch of Alna
A Fire Elemental summoned with a focus object gets a hit point bonus making it have approximately the same hit points as a air elemental summoned without a focus object of the same level. They receive around the same statistical bonuses as the air elemental.

In summary each elemental becomes more powerful than the one before it when you use the focus objects. Some receive more hit points than others. Some receive more statistics than others. Simply put a pet summoned with the focus object will be better than a pet summoned without one, and it is certainly worth doing the quests to obtain the items. Mage Focus Items must also be held during summoning in order to be effective.

i just did this quest at lvl 24 and i think it was worth it. its attack and delay isnt bad,its got a few stats with it and i no longer have to memorize renew element before i camp. and i dont think that the shovel wouldnt do anything. even if not noticeable. im sure it still does something
Useless Shovel
# Aug 06 2000 at 9:07 AM Rating: Decent
Well Allaween I dont know what you did wrong but you can stop wasting your time and money. At 35 the shovel of Ponz doesnt do squat. I still get green pets just as often, and the pets are no tougher using it. Save your plat.
RE: Useless Shovel
# Apr 16 2001 at 10:15 PM Rating: Default
1) Focus items do not increase the level of your pet, but they do increase your pet's statistics (strength, agility, hitpoints, e.g.). So it is possible to get a green pet with focus that is better than the same green pet with no focus.

2) You can get a green pet as early as your 4th level pet, if summoned when you are level 7. You have a better chance of getting a higher /con pet at the level you first get the spell; three or four levels later, you'll still be summoning the same level pet, but the /con will change because the relative level of your pet is now lower.

3) While you can't purchase the quest items, you can purchase some or all of the components, and the gems are very pricey. Even if the only components you purchase are the gems, you're going to spend 300-400 pp just on them unless you are very charismatic or have a good enchanter or shaman friend to help with the purchasing.
RE: Useless Shovel

you are wrong. I have a shovel and it works fine at 35.
RE: Useless Shovel
# Mar 19 2001 at 1:49 AM Rating: Default
ummm did you even do the quest? save your cash you can't buy the shovel it's no drop. Had you turn in the components to temple of ro and put the shovel in lead hand it's impossible to get a green con at 35... Further more I question if you had made it to lvl 35 as no pet I ever summoned w/out foci was green till at least 38. Correct me if I am wrong it has been a while but I know I would have pissed off had it not worked, as would any other mage.
RE: Useless Shovel
# Sep 16 2000 at 12:00 AM Rating: Default
the shovel do not make u summon higher color pet , but make the pet hit harder
You get green pets at 35?
# Sep 09 2000 at 10:46 PM Rating: Default
I see necros and enchanters who do but not I. Infact I usualy get a good pet the first cast nearly every time.

If you get a green pet at 35 recast, you can get a blue easily.
It didn't work! Oh no!
# Aug 04 2000 at 6:10 PM Rating: Excellent
Hail, Allaween, magician of the 18th season here. I, through great effort, legitimately acquired all of the items necessary to complete the shovel of ponz quest. Some careful questing for money for the ruby, enlisting
the help of some random high lvls to get me the hill giant toes, and luck in seeing the regular shovel /auctioned.

I travel over to the temple, and find the right person. I hail her, and go through the whole thing to be sure she says the list of items again, and that it is the items that I have. I feel safe that my items are the right items. Hand them to her, hit TRADE, and am shocked to see the message "Solusek Ro does not believe in half measures." four times!! GASP! At level 18 that ruby was a MAJOR hit to my pocketbook, and geting the other components took a GREAT deal of my time.

I have done the quest for the darkwood staff from this temple before successfully, and have not done anything to change my faction here that I know of. What did I do wrong??

She kinda forgot the gargoyle eye.... That just MIGHT be a problem.
#Anonymous, Posted: Oct 12 2000 at 3:15 PM, Rating: Sub-Default, (Expand Post) The reason that the quest didnt work for you is the shovel. The shovel for the quest is NO DROP!!

Please ignore the last post the shovel is not no drop.I think it had to do with teh order he handed the items in.I will post agin after i do this quest
RE: It didn't work! Oh no!
# Sep 08 2000 at 8:49 AM Rating: Default
Completely legitimate.
RE: It didn't work! Oh no!
# Sep 05 2000 at 10:26 AM Rating: Default
Well, I wouldn't call buying quest items and looting rights to quest items 'legitimate acquisition'.
RE: It didn't work! Oh no!
# Aug 25 2000 at 7:43 AM Rating: Good
There is a small problem, which may still be around. When someone does give the NPC only part of a set of quest items, the NPC wants to see the missing things first. If now someone else comes along and gives him his full set, he will not succeed with the quest (so proved, when I and a fellow cleric tried for our armor; he gave her 2 pieces, then he had to get the pp bar from our enchanter...meanwhile I gave her my full set and received nothing...).
So if you really gave her the right things, it may have been this problem. The only safeguard against it is to give her all things single, which gives you a chance to get it right.

Hmmm....were you invisible at the time? that very same thing happened to me, and I was accidently ivis hehe. Also, they fixded the bug where you cant even hail them when they invi ) good luck! )

Shovel of Ponz
# Jul 24 2000 at 1:54 AM Rating: Decent
To the one who was combining the items in the Elemental Grimoire...you do *not* do that. You give all 4 items to the woman in the temple of Solusek ro. Your research book has NOTHING to do with this quest.
RE: Shovel of Ponz
# Nov 21 2000 at 9:06 AM Rating: Default
you are right I have done the quest and have the
shovel I simpily got the idems from
1 Casic thule get the non magic shovel there first
2 get the hill giant toes some merchents sell em
3 get a RUBY , NOT A STAR RUBY! A PLAIN ruby
4 mmm forgotten what one I gave her but I looked it up on the boards will get back to this one.

Any how you give her (the chick at the temple)all 4 idems at once and
poof you get the shovel.

THE SHOVEL IS NO DROP!!! so you cannot buy it .
hope this helps all who are intresting in knowing
how to do this quest.

I have done this quest twice and failed to combine the items. I have gathered all the items and combined them using my spell book and each time it says "you failed to combine these items in these quantities" or something like that. Being a lvl 28 Mage with average research skill I would have thought I could have done it. But no. Any suggestions?

Re: KOS
# Jul 22 2000 at 9:08 PM Rating: Decent
If you are talking about inside of the Temple of Solusek Ro, the answer is no. Everyone, regardless of race, class, or diety starts off indifferent to everyone inside of the temple.

The only ways to lose faction with the Temple that I know of are to either kill the friendly Shadowman in Mistmoore, or to hail the Efreeti in the basement of the Temple.

Wallabus: Not all Dark Elves are KOS to all Halflings. I have a low level, agnostic, DE Warrior and the Halflings in Nek Forest /con dubious to him.
