This task begins with Skal Nethus (map) in the Plane of Knowledge. He's an Erudite found at location -320, 1200, -111 (close to Franklin Teek, just east of the Guild Lobby).

You say, 'Hail, Skal Nethus'

Skal Nethus says 'Adventurer, you have not seen any strange apparitions in your [dreams] lately, have you?'

You say, 'I haven't had any strange dreams'

Skal Nethus says 'Thank the gods! Then it is not too late! After my last, uh, mishap with Dungeon Rot, I went on a walking [journey] across Norrath, to clear my head and think of my next venture. Eventually night found me in the Feerrott, and I laid my head down upon a mossy statue to [sleep].'

You say, 'What journey?'

Skal Nethus says 'Ah, you're interested in my journey? Well, it's quite a story. While traveling, I came across a dusty old book. It tells the story of a legendary [flower], the Udumbara, that blooms once every three-thousand years.'

You say, 'What flower?'

Skal Nethus says 'That's right! A natural artifact so powerful, it is rumored the Gods themselves limited its recurrence in Norrath. But there is a catch: the alchemist who wrote this book found a way to grow the flower artificially, though it is no easy [task].'

You say, 'What task?'

Skal Nethus says 'Hmm... where to start? You'll have to travel to many dangerous areas of Norrath and recover a series of [artifacts], some natural, some crafted by unknowns. Once you have, come talk to me and I'll instruct you on what to do with them. Be very careful though, mysterious natural forces are at work and will be looking for these artifacts too!'

You say, 'I'll find the artifacts!'

Skal Nethus says 'Very well, here is a list of where you can look for them. Good luck to you!'

You have been assigned the task 'Udumbara, the flower of legend'.

All items in this task are found in the hot zones that were introduced on June 19, 2013.

Mobs in these zones will randomly morph into a treant (does not change its name or abilities; only changes form into a small green treant). When that happens, that mob will drop the item.

NOTE: It's possible (not confirmed) that only specific mob types have a chance to morph into a treant. It's also possible (again not confirmed) that the mob type can vary by the day (or some period of time). Update to the NOTE: looking at bestiary entries of the past few years it really looks like these are zone randoms and not specific NPC (again not confirmed)

    All items are pre-lootable.

  1. Deliver 1 Soul of the Wilderness to Skal Nethus 0/1 (Plane of Knowledge)

This is found in Warsliks Wood in the cave that is the entrance to Crypt of Dalnir. (kill "an iksar lookout"; "a skulking brute", and various scaled wolves for the Soul of the Wilderness).

Outstanding! I cannot believe you were able to recover all of them. Well, almost all of them. I was not entirely honest with you. This is the final item you'll need. I was keeping it in case you would not return. Take it, and take this recipe: follow it to the letter and you shall have Udumbara!

I wonder if i could agro a mob and just let it beat on me until it changes. Would save some running around trying to find mobs to kill.

If you are having trouble getting the drops, use the actual quester to do some damage/kill or at least have him nearby.

I'm on my third lap of doing these for alts. Agree with all the earlier posts about any mob. One more thing. I have killed the zone... well not really, some of these zones are too big to traverse but certainly a HUGE area down and no morph, then I either summon the actual questing toon to me or use them to do the kill BINGO, next mob! It's happened probably 5 or 6x now that I give up beaming and bring the quest guy over or have him kill. In every case it was either the next mob or 1 or 2 and he got the morph. In some cases my mob count was well over 100 before summon and/or add damage <poof> morph happens.

If anybody else has this experience please confirm/deny this apparent link.

Maybe not all zones have the any mob rule, regardless many mobs not listed do morph that's for sure.

We were almost done with the this quest (3rd lap of doing this) and couldn't get it to drop, roughly 70 kills in WoS, went to the Griplan area (sort of a test of whether all zones have the "any mob" thing going), 1st kill was morphed.

I just completed this quest and tried searching for the listed mobs. Finally after wandering around I decided to kill everything I see just to pass the time. And every drop I looted was from a mob not listed. I agree that the Morphing can happen to any mob in the zone. So just kill everything, its more fun that way too.

I've done this quest on several toons and have gotten nearly every drop from mobs that are not listed in the quest description above. I'm convinced that all the items are zone-wide random. Just tonight, helping a friend I got the Burning Woods piece from a skeleton, the Undershore piece from a Ragepaw, and the Hills of Shade piece from a Fisherman.

I'm convinced that any mob in the required zone can morph into the treant and drop the pieces.

I agree. We have picked up ours on stuff that wasn't listed also. Just wipe everything.

The Valley of Lunanyn drop can be obtained from "a Mosstrooper" also, and they're far easier to pull.

Farmers are social with them however.

I finished this quest a few weeks ago, really fun :) Like any other quest that you need multi-zone drops for, some drop quick, others take awhile. I just went around in each zone killing the stuff listed and when those ran out, killed other stuff. I also enjoyed revisiting old zones that I probably wouldn't have, so thanks!!

OMG! This has been the longest hunt so far of the drop items. I've been in PoA for a total of 11hrs. to get this drop. Killing everything in the zone over and over until finally, DING! a drop!
And I was expecting it to come from a Phoenix but it was A Niborien Servant that gave me my freedom from PoA.
Phew...!

Ok, just finished the task and I wanted to say, really fun! I enjoyed hunting in those zones and killing those mobs again. Has been years since killing in most of the old zones.
Thanks SOE.

A black panther in JPF will turn into a treant and drop the Tears of Karana. Also, Ashes of Kunark is listed under a forest giant verdant loot table but not on this list. I can confirm the verdants drop it as well.

Sent in a possible /petition with a possible bug but was never answered, possibly because it had something about quest on it and I've never ask for any help on quest before but heard they ignore most quest petitions.

BUT: For a different quest (that 36 item combine zone aug quest), I literally could NOT get a drop for Salving grace from the snakes. Immediately AFTER my character got bane strike (100 killed) I got the drops. Math guy here, magello list drop rate at 76%. Odds are (rounded) 1 in 10 trillion that I would not get the drop in 100 kills. There may be a bug linked to bane strike. Also note my chars are 100 so that may factor in, those mobs ARE GREY!

Then, I couldn't get "Serene Light of...". Next kill after bane strike: BAM! got it, then got it quickly in just a few kills for the other two boxes.

Not saying it's not a buggy hookup to bane strike. Could be lots of things but, if you're big and these guys are totally trivial, keep your chin up. In a few minutes you'll hit 100 kills and get the drops, at least it worked that way for me.

A big aggravating but hey, if it wasn't aggravating, I'd play something else!

GL all.
