This task begins with Skal Nethus (map) in the Plane of Knowledge. He's an Erudite found at location -320, 1200, -111 (close to Franklin Teek, just east of the Guild Lobby).

You say, 'Hail, Skal Nethus'

Skal Nethus says 'Adventurer, you have not seen any strange apparitions in your [dreams] lately, have you?'

You say, 'I haven't had any strange dreams'

Skal Nethus says 'Thank the gods! Then it is not too late! After my last, uh, mishap with Dungeon Rot, I went on a walking [journey] across Norrath, to clear my head and think of my next venture. Eventually night found me in the Feerrott, and I laid my head down upon a mossy statue to [sleep].'

You say, 'What journey?'

Skal Nethus says 'Ah, you're interested in my journey? Well, it's quite a story. While traveling, I came a across a dusty old book. It tells the story of a legendary [flower], the Udumbara, that blooms once every three-thousand years.'

You say, 'What flower?'

Skal Nethus says 'That's right! A natural artifact so poweful, it is rumored the Gods themselves limited its recurrence in Norrath. But there is a catch: the alchemist who wrote this book found a way to grow the flower artificially, though it is no easy [task].'

You say, 'What task?'

Skal Nethus says 'Hmm... where to start? You'll have to travel to many dangerous areas of Norrath and recover a series of [artifacts], some natural, some crafted by unknowns. Once you have, come talk to me and I'll instruct you on what to do with them. Be very careful though, mysterious natural forces are at work and will be looking for these artifacts too!'

You say, 'I'll find the artifacts!'

Skal Nethus says 'Very well, here is a list of where you can look for them. Good luck to you!'

You have been assigned the task 'Udumbara, the flower of legend'.

All items in this task are found in the hot zones that were introduced on June 19, 2013.

Mobs in these zones will randomly morph into a treant (does not change its name or abilities; only changes form into a small green treant). When that happens, that mob will drop the item.

NOTE: It's possible (not confirmed) that only specific mob types have a chance to morph into a treant. It's also possible (again not confirmed) that the mob type can vary by the day (or some period of time). Update to the NOTE: looking at bestiary entries of the past few years it really looks like these are zone randoms and not specific NPC (again not confirmed)

All items are pre-lootable.

Deliver 1 Soul of the Wilderness to Skal Nethus 0/1 (Plane of Knowledge)

This is found in Warsliks Wood in the cave that is the entrance to Crypt of Dalnir. (kill "an iksar lookout"; "a skulking brute", and various scaled wolves for the Soul of the Wilderness).

Doing this quest, I realized early on you wanna go to a spot in the zone where the target mobs are concentrated and repop often. Especially since I'm boxing and wanted to get two of everything. I did NOT wanna run all over these zones, tracking and looking for mobs.
Soul of the Wilderness, Warsliks Wood : Go to the cave that is entrance to Crypt of Dalnir. Kill all the skulking brutes there til it drops.
Scorching Light of the Heavens, Marus Seru : Don't bother with greyhoppers, just kill every Crumbling and Weathered Stonegrabber til it drops. Unfortunately, you DO have to run all over the zone to get this one.
Alpine Light of the Heavens, Frontier Mountains : Go to the giant fort near zone center and kill every giant til it drops.
Water of Plenty, Dawnshroud Peaks : You can literally stand in one spot mid-zone and nuke wolves as they pass by and get this fairly quick.
Tears of Karana, Jaggedpine Forest : Please do NOT waste your time killing black panthers and grey pinewolves. I did for an hour and got nothing til my pet killed a greenwood grizzly that agroed. Kill the grizzlies, get the drop faster.
Ashes of Kunark, Burning Woods : Just go to the giant fort mid-zone and kill all. Easy.
Ancient Compost Box, Corathus Creep : There is only one "room" or area here that spawns creep reapers and slithering coralthus. Just stay in that room killing all til it drops.
Blood Infused Soil, Bloodfields : Stay in the circular rooms that are at the zones to City of Dranik and Dranik's Scar. Each zoneline has 2 or 3 round rooms with about 5 dragorn each. This took me awhile, I had to clear each room about 3 times but better than runnin all over trying to kill random dragorn.
Infrangible Bottle, Undershore : Do NOT waste your time on soldiers. Just jump in the large body of water at the base of the waterfall, and kill every witheran gnasher and basilisk til you get the drop.
Flawless Air of the Plane, Plane of Air : OMG do NOT waste your time on phoenix mobs or the nilborien servants, I did for over an hour. They did not drop squat. From the zone in, go UP two ramps to get to a round grassy island that is nothing but wall to wall stormriders. Once I went there, I got three drops in four kills. It was ridiculous.
Sunlight Prism Box, Wall of Slaughter : Post exactly right on this, just kill every girplan on the road to Anguish and you'll have the drop in quick order.
Serene Light of the Heavens, Oceangreen Hills : Just kill all the zombie bombardiers surrounding the catapults near the zone in. Drops pretty quick and often. Easy one.
Antipodal Light of the Heavens, Hills of Shade : Did run around a bit on this one. Just kill thorned mulches close to zone in til you get it. Also got one from a tortured treant.
Damp Fog of the Field, Old Bloodfields : Like post says, nocs and kyvs, but did not drop for me until I went out near the first wall away from zone. Once I moved further out, two dropped fairly quick.
Blood of Lunalyn, Valley of Lunalyn. Just as post says, go to mephit tunnels and this is easy drop. You can just kill the 6 outside the tunnel and get it, no need to go in.
Portable Greenhouse of Thule, The Grounds : I cleared the whole pumpkin patch without getting one from a peponite, but at least theyre all in one place and theres plenty of them so I gotta believe this is better than running the zone looking for random rotdogs and souring treants.

As a molo cleric of the 89th season, I found this quest easy & enjoyable. I did have to ask my buddy for assistance when it came to getting the Blood of Lunanyn & the

Portable Greenhouse of Thule as those mobs were a bit more than my merc & I could safely handle. All other items were a snap!

I have Udumbara sitting my bank....until I reach lvl 90.

5 star quest !!!! I would have given 6, if I was able.Smiley: nod

Thanks. I've added it to the lengthy quest write up.

Skulking Brute tonight outside Dalnir Crypt, first kill. Monkey turned into a tree so I had to see what he dropped.
This is also a plug for Coney Island Hard Rootbeer because I'm 3 sheets at the moment off this stuff.
Anyway, add this mob to the drop list =P

Serene Light of the Heavens dropped from a Fire Beetle in Oceangreen Hills last week. I had been hammering the lurkers and bombardiers for days with no luck. Out of frustration I started killing anything that moved and there it was.

Warslik's Woods - a Scaled Wolf Cub, a Scaled Wolf Pup (did not drop in over 50 "an Iksar Lookout" kills; first kill on a Scaled Wolf Club did it).
Marus Seru - a Greyhopper, a Rhino Beetle Hatchling
Frontier Mountains - a Mountain Giant Tump
Dawnshroud Peeks - a Wolf
The Jaggedpine Forest - a black pinewolf, a grey pinewolf (Easiest way to get there is Druid Portal to Surefall glades, then zoneline to The Jaggedpine Forest).
Burning Woods - a forest giant verdant, a forest giant ancient
Corathus Creep - a corathus baitshifter, a corathus squirmer
The Bloodfields - a dragorn peon (either set of ruins is a good spot)
Undershore - a sporali protector, an Illsalin Soldier
Plane of Air - a mischievous stormrider, a stormrider lightning claw (they are in "wing" by themselves basically. I killed every Phoenix and Nilborien servant that was up and didn't get them to change to treant. First pull of the mobs I listed, did).
Wall of Slaughter - girplans
Oceangreen Hills - a zombie bombardier
Hills of Shade - a Viridian Ghost, a Blackwater Resident
Old Bloodfields - a noc flashblade, an uk unfleshhound

I found excellent success at the loc marked on maps as "bandit camp" closest to FoB zone line - 3 mobs back right popped a tree every other round.

Just for those wondering, you don't have to wait until the mob turns into a tree mid-fight. Even if you one-shot the mob, it has a chance of turning into a tree. So, feel free to slaughter in low-level zones; no need to do damage slowly.

If you are having trouble getting the drops, use the actual quester to do some damage/kill or at least have him nearby.

I'm on my third lap of doing these for alts. Agree with all the earlier posts about any mob. One more thing. I have killed the zone... well not really, some of these zones are too big to traverse but certainly a HUGE area down and no morph, then I either summon the actual questing toon to me or use them to do the kill BINGO, next mob! It's happened probably 5 or 6x now that I give up beaming and bring the quest guy over or have him kill. In every case it was either the next mob or 1 or 2 and he got the morph. In some cases my mob count was well over 100 before summon and/or add damage <poof> morph happens.

If anybody else has this experience please confirm/deny this apparent link.

Maybe not all zones have the any mob rule, regardless many mobs not listed do morph that's for sure.

We were almost done with the this quest (3rd lap of doing this) and couldn't get it to drop, roughly 70 kills in WoS, went to the Griplan area (sort of a test of whether all zones have the "any mob" thing going), 1st kill was morphed.

I just completed this quest and tried searching for the listed mobs. Finally after wandering around I decided to kill everything I see just to pass the time. And every drop I looted was from a mob not listed. I agree that the Morphing can happen to any mob in the zone. So just kill everything, its more fun that way too.

I've done this quest on several toons and have gotten nearly every drop from mobs that are not listed in the quest description above. I'm convinced that all the items are zone-wide random. Just tonight, helping a friend I got the Burning Woods piece from a skeleton, the Undershore piece from a Ragepaw, and the Hills of Shade piece from a Fisherman.

I'm convinced that any mob in the required zone can morph into the treant and drop the pieces.

The Valley of Lunanyn drop can be obtained from "a Mosstrooper" also, and they're far easier to pull.

Farmers are social with them however.
