Anniversary events tend to run from mid-March to mid-April (sometimes to mid-May) each year. They are not available during the "off season".

For an overview and list of EverQuest Anniversary events, see this quest entry.

This is an anniversary task introduced with EverQuest's 14th anniversary. It begins with Sheriff Knotter Botter in the Steamfont Mountains. He is found outside the minotaur caves in the far northeastern part of the zone.

You say, 'Hail, Sheriff Knotter Botter'

Sheriff Knotter Botter says 'Did you see any skeletons running around here?' Sheriff Knotter Botter looks over your shoulder and frowns. 'I mean REALLY BIG [skeletons]!'

You say, 'Skeletons?'

Sheriff Knotter Botter says 'They've been pounding on the gates of Ak'Anon all night! They smash their knuckles into the steel so many times their joints pop, their bones fall apart, and they crumple into piles. Their [enchantments] must be shoddy, but still I can't believe what I'm seeing!'

You say, 'Enchantments?'

Sheriff Knotter Botter says 'Ogres! Skeletons as big as ogres can mean only one thing: ogre necromancers! I thought the lugs were too stupid to enchant the dead, but I followed the skeletons to this cave, beyond which I found a [camp] of ogres. They're looking as shifty as I expected, and several of them have begun digging in the area. I'm sure they're enchanting the bones of their dead and sending them against Ak'Anon!'

You say, 'A camp?'

Sheriff Knotter Botter says 'I couldn't get close enough to their camp to confront them. They shooed me off and said I'd make a fine snack if I came around again. If only I had a [disguise]! If I looked as dumb and brutish as they do, surely they'd confide in me!'

You say, 'What disguise?'

Sheriff Knotter Botter says 'We'll need a master tailor for this to work. I heard a great tailor, Sticklepoke, has come to Lesser Faydark to sell his wares. His garments are in great demand, so he never stays long in one place. If you hurry, you might be able to find him and convince him to [help] with this ogre problem.'

You say, 'I will help'

Sheriff Knotter Botter says 'You will? You are a credit to your people! I heard you will find Sticklepoke at the ranger outpost in Lesser Faydark. Hurry!'

You have been assigned the task 'Ogres at the Gates'.

Sheriff Knotter Botter has asked you to investigate the source of the giant skeletons that have been attacking the gates of Ak'Anon.

Speak with Master Tailor Sticklepoke 0/1 (Lesser Faydark)

Task Window Says: Sticklepoke, the master tailor, has arrived in Lesser Faydark. Speak to him and find out if he can create a convincing ogre disguise.

Master Tailor Sticklepoke is found in the Lesser Faydark at /way -270,+1250 (this is at a wood elf camp in the south-central part of the zone -- he is also findable with CTRL+F).

You say, 'Hail, Master Tailor Sticklepoke'

Master Tailor Sticklepoke says 'What sort of garment do you want made? An ogre suit? Surely you're mad. Just look at you; you'd never pull it off! However, my eyebrows have been raised. This could be my most difficult, finest work ever commissioned! All I will need are pieces of flayed ogre skin, some sturdy bones, some orc muscles, and some essence of life to give the suit that touch of the real. There should be some ogre skin near the gnomish camp by the passage to Steamfont, for the gnomes there battled a band of ogres passing through not long ago. As for bones, I've seen the undead wandering the forest, and they even have their own unholy altar. Surely you can glean some orc muscles from near the camps of orcs in the forest. And I heard that fairies hoard life energy among their mushrooms.'

This opens up the next eight steps.

Collect 2 Orc Muscles 0/2 (Lesser Faydark)

Orc Muscle is a ground spawn found near orc camps. Orc camps are found in various parts of the zone.

Collect 2 Sturdy Bones 0/2 (Lesser Faydark)

Sturdy Bone is a ground spawn found near the altar of the undead at /way +30,+2275.
Found at -377, 2548.
Found at +1508, +2167 in the NW part.

Collect 2 Flayed Ogre Skins 0/2 (Lesser Faydark)

Flayed Ogre Skin is a ground spawn near the gnomish camp by the passage to Steamfont Mountains.

Collect 1 Life Essence 0/1 (Lesser Faydark)

Life Essence is a ground spawn near the faerie village in the NW part of the zone at /way +1050,+3650.

Deliver 2 Orc Muscles to Master Tailor Sticklepoke 0/2 (Lesser Faydark)

Deliver 2 Sturdy Bones to Master Tailor Sticklepoke 0/2 (Lesser Faydark)

Deliver 2 Flayed Ogre Skins to Master Tailor Sticklepoke 0/2 (Lesser Faydark)

Deliver 1 Life Essence to Master Tailor Sticklepoke 0/1 (Lesser Faydark)

Task Window Says: Sticklepoke needs you to collect Flayed Ogre Skin, Sturdy Bones, Orc Muscle, and Life Essence in order to craft his convincing ogre suit. You can find Flayed Ogre Skin near the gnomish camp by the passage to Steamfont. Sturdy Bones can be found near the altar of the undead. You can find orc muscle near the orc camps. You can find life energy near the faerie village. When you've collected the components, deliver them to Master Tailor Sticklepoke.

Speak with Master Tailor Sticklepoke 0/1 (Lesser Faydark)

Task Window Says: Speak to Sticklepoke and receive the ogre suit he created.

You say, 'Hail, Master Tailor Sticklepoke'

Master Tailor Sticklepoke says 'You managed to find everything! Splendid! Let me just sew it all up...yes, my greatest, most beautiful creation! So lifelike!' You hold the ogre suit in your hands. It looks deflated and flabby, and its skin appears pale and sickly, like death. 'Go now, and show the world the wonder that I have wrought!''

You receive "Sickly Ogre Suit".

Speak with Grundlebrew 0/1 (Steamfont Mountains)

Speak with Jorbash 0/1 (Steamfont Mountains)

Speak with Crackjaw 0/1 (Steamfont Mountains)

Task Window Says: Now that you have the disguise, speak to the captains of the ogre camp in the Steamfont Mountains.

The ogre camp is found in the far northeastern part of the zone (between the entrances to the Loping Plains and Dragonscale Hills). The ogres are on Find (Ctrl+F).

Hail Grundlebrew, Jorbash and Crackjaw. Without your Ogre Suit on, you'll see:

Crackjaw says 'Why would I talk to the likes of you?'

With the illusion on, you'll see:

Crackjaw says 'Lazy! Go dig! Brudders past got da treasure and died at da big battle. Gotta bring back da treasure! Tell dem lazybones ova dere ta keep diggin!'

Grundlebrew says 'A necra...manicer...necrom...wha? You talks strange! You be sick, brudder? Too much of da diggins, I sez, makes you like pasty death! Too mucha da jibba jabba! Sit at da fire and eat! Rest you needs!'

Jorbash says 'Does I knows you? What about da crows and da romancers? True ogre know no romances! Go backs and digs harder! We needs da treasures our dead brudders grabbed from Oakymon!'

Kill 3 unearthers 0/3 (Steamfont Mountains)

Task Window Says: The ogres don't appear to be necromancers. While wearing your disguise, speak to ogres digging near the camp. Deal with them if they become hostile.

The unearthers are found a little ways north of the ogre camp. They are on Find (Ctrl+F).

You say, 'Hail, an unearther'

an unearther says 'Romance? Me no want no romance! You wants steal treasure? No treasure, only bones! Bones is treasure! Eat more bones, gain more strength -- strength of strong brudders! You no steal ma strength of brudders!'

It goes aggro.

These are level 1 but do proc a shovel spell that does 716 dmg (fully mitigated).

Speak with Sheriff Knotter Botter 0/1 (Steamfont Mountains)

Task Window Says: Tell Sheriff Knotter Botter that the ogres are merely cannibals and treasure hunters, not necromancers.

You say, 'Hail, Sheriff Knotter Botter'

Sheriff Knotter Botter says 'What? They're just treasure hunters...and cannibals? I've heard stories of a rabble of ogres that busted into Akanon and stole a few trinkets, but we gnomes hunted them down and killed them before they could get far. A few must have escaped and spread tales about lost robbers and their buried riches. Those greedy dolts! As your report confirms their stupidity, they must not be the source of the skeletons. We must learn more! If we could build some sturdy traps, we could study these enchanted bones before they bash themselves to pieces on the gates. Around Steamfont I'm sure you can find some scrap metal pieces, probably near dwellings and metal structures. If you give them to Trapper Snaplock, I'm sure he could fashion us a few traps.'

Collect 3 Scrap Metal Strips 0/3 (Steamfont Mountains)

Deliver 3 Scrap Metal Strips to Trapper Snaplock 0/3 (Steamfont Mountains)

Task Window Says: The sheriff wants to set some traps for the giant skeletons, but scrap metal will be needed in order to build them. You can find scrap metal strips near dwellings in the Steamfont Mountains. Trapper Snaplock can construct the traps when you have found the metal.

Scrap Metal Strips are known to spawn on the ground by the Veilbreaker blimp and around the gnome houses next to its landing. (Ground spawns appear as yellow wisps.) /loc is -1091, -1467, +1.7. Also there is one behind the windmills near zone edge as you leave Sheriff. One at blimp dock, as you say, near the two metal gnome huts that sell the aug books. Go to Ak'anon entrance, you get 3rd on the left of the town zone-in, as you face it going in.

Trapper Snaplock is found at 1560, -260, 3 (far north-central part of the zone; also findable via CTRL+F).

Trapper Snaplock says 'Wow, that's quite a load! Give it here; I'll do what I can for the Sheriff...there you go: a nice, bulging bag o' traps! Normally I craft these clampers to catch all the critters crawling in all the crevices around here, but these are reinforced for big game: giant skeletons! Go ahead, give 'em to the Sheriff and make me proud!'

Deliver 1 Trap Bundle to Sheriff Knotter Botter 0/1 (Steamfont Mountains)

Sheriff Knotter Botter says 'Excellent work, _____! It looks like we're all set to harvest us a bushel of bones! You shall [accompany] me in my work, right?'

You have discovered that the skeletons assaulting Ak'Anon were not created by the ogres searching for treasure in Steamfont. Now that Sheriff Knotter Botter has a bag of traps, he will try to capture some of the skeletons and discover their origins.

*** UPDATE *** As of the June 19th, 2013 patch, the Devs finally fixed this NPC, once again allowing players to start this Anniversary series. These quests are only available during the EQ Anniversary periods (usually mid-March to mid-April with occasional extensions).

In case anyone is wondering, the Sheriff Knotter Botter is not present on any server. In other words, no one can start the 14th Anniversary quest series if they had not already done so before his disappearance. If you know someone who completed "Ogres at the Gates" they can help you request the other missions.

There has been no EQ Dev response to this issue so far. It is assumed they will have a talk with the Sheriff and encourage him to return to his post in the near future.

weird fight vs unearthers

There's an aura over the place where the unearthers stand. I'm not sure of all the effects, but it makes the battle very strange. I think they must be trying to make the fight work the same way across all levels, so basically if you can stand up to the 716-point shovel in the face, you can fight these guys.

I only did this on my monk so I don't know what the effect is on spells, but melee attacks vs the unearthers do maybe 1% or less of their usual damage. I was hitting them for 6-10 points. But the aura gives you a proc, Melee Strike, and "an unearther takes extra damage in its vulnerable state." The extra damage is a million hp, or 2.6 million on a crit. The aura affects pets, including swarm pets, so at my peak I was doing nearly ten million dps! (And it still took a while to beat down these mobs!)

The weirdest moment was when I heard my audio trigger telling me I'd done a Finishing Blow; I heard the trigger eleven times in six seconds, because these mobs shrug off Finishing Blows! (For starters, the FB only does about 1000 points due to the extreme mitigation.)

Anyway, I'm guessing any level with a few thousand hp can handle the first step. I don't know if the strange buffs in the followup mission will similarly let mid- and low-level toons do that mission.
