Marton Sayer may be found in a cottage in Qeynos Hills at around /loc 1400, 300, 9.

You say, 'Hail, Marton Sayer'

Marton Sayer says, 'Welcome. Please stock up on provisions, especially if you are headed toward the lair of the vile gnolls. If so, I wish you much luck and many gnoll pelts! I also have knowledge of a [powerful dog]. I pray you do not encounter him.'

You say, 'What powerful dog?'

Marton Sayer says, 'I have encountered a gnoll who spoke the common tongue. He dared to call himself Lord Elgnub. He swore that some day we would cross paths and he would snatch my infant son Joseph from our home. He would stand no chance against me and the mighty [Gnoll Slayer].'

You say, 'What is Gnoll Slayer?'

Marton Sayer says, 'Gnoll Slayer is the mighty longsword which was passed down unto me through generations of Sayers. My days of battle are over, but I can still wield her with ferocity. The only thing more precious would be my son, Joseph Sayer. I would trade Gnoll Slayer only for him to be safe and sound at home.'

Marton's initial dialogue is slightly different if you speak to him while carrying the baby, after asking about the gnoll slayer you get:

Marton Sayer says, 'Gnoll Slayer is the mighty longsword which was passed down unto me through generations of Sayers. My days of battle are over, but I can still wield her with ferocity. The only thing more precious would be my son, [Joseph Sayer]. I would trade Gnoll Slayer only for him to be safe and sound at home.'

You say, 'Joseph Sayer'

Marton Sayer says, 'You speak of my son, Joseph Sayer. He is but an infant and is safe here with Mira and me... At least, I believe he is.'

Lord Elgnub can occasionally be found wandering around Blackburrow. Kill him and loot Baby Joseph Sayer, which you should bring back to Joseph.

Marton Sayer says, 'Baby Joseph! Look, Momma!! Baby Joseph has been rescued by this good adventurer!! That evil Lord Elgnub made good on his word and snatched my son from under our noses. You saved the day!! For this you shall wield 'Gnoll Slayer'!! Be aware of its [true potential].'

You say, 'What true potential?'

Marton Sayer says, 'The true potential of Gnoll Slayer is an enchantment which was once imbedded into a gnoll's eye which was placed into the hilt of the blade. The spell would help you fight off disease and call forth a wolf to fight beside you. Alas, the gnoll eye was stolen from the blade by a great, one-eyed, white gnoll. Along with the eye, the only book which explained how to return the enchantment was also stolen. I know not where this gnoll might be. If you can find the journal and the eye, return them with the Gnoll Slayer to me, for I have been searching for decades.'

Head to South Karana. Kill a one eyed gnoll (located in the northern part of the zone (/loc?) to loot a Gnoll's Eye. Kill a Lteth Val Scribe to loot a Journal of Greater Enchantment. Give the eye, journal, and intermediate Gnoll Slayer to Marton.

Marton Sayer says, 'The eye and the journal! What a great day! The Gnoll Slayer shall be returned to full strength because of you. Your service to Qeynos will not soon be forgotten.'

I was just informed by customer service that you have to push the button marked 'upgrade to Gnoll Slayer' in the description box before turning in the intermediate version with the eye and book to get the upgraded version back. If you don't press the button first, the eye and book will be eaten and you'll get the 6/28 version back.

Yeah this is just weird, I don't know what Daybreak is doing here by adding another version of Gnoll Slayer. Now there are 3:

Turn in Baby Joseph Sayer to Marton Sayer, receive:
* item 66600, Gnoll Slayer, 6 dmg / 28 delay / no bane damage

Press the convert button on the item description window:
* item 5416, Gnoll Slayer, 6 dmg / 28 delay / Bane Dmg: Gnoll 5

Turn in Gnoll's Eye, Journal of Greater Enchantment, Gnoll Slayer (converted), receive:
* item 5417, Gnoll Slayer, 15 dmg / 40 delay / Bane Dmg: Gnoll 10 / Disease +25 / 2 charges of Companion Spirit

In case anyone was wondering, both the mobs for this spawn during classic, in paw, but neither of them seem to drop the quest items for this. Only the Intermediate 6/28 seems to be doable (which with the +5 bane is pretty nice for classic).

Escaped splitpaw gnoll
# Jan 25 2014 at 4:48 AM Rating: Decent
After spending quite a few levels here, trying to figure out the spawn, I now have a theory that both the one-eyed and scribe are on the "escaped splitpaw gnoll" spawn. There may be several of those. One is at least spawning a good deal west of the bridge against the water. It spawns back-to-back as far as I can tell and yielded one-eyed two times and then the escaped. I have yet to see the scribe, but having killed all gnolls near splitpaw, spawning several nameds and nothing ltheth-ish ever showing up, he's either on the ishva mal (out of my reach) or the escaped splitpaw. Since the ishva mal is way above level for this quest, I'm sticking to the escaped split paw gnoll theory and am about to test it.

Score: looks like there's at least 4 escaped splitpaw gnoll spawns, all in the southern part. They don't spawn back to back, but are on the zone's timer, so yesterday must've been others in the zone. He spawned as replacement of the second kill and was blue to a 31.

I was in South K around the skelly camp fighting Adult elephants when Lteth Val Scribe spawned twice and dropped the eye and the book needed for the quest so it was "sure why not." He cons red at 20 and does charm. I was boxing my 20 level beastlord and we had mercs up so he went down fairly easy. Went to Qeynos Hills and stop by and hailed Sayer; just to make sure this was still a go. Went to Blackburrow to find lord Elgnub. He spawns in the pit where the spikes and the snakes are. I was not there the first couple of times he spawned and noticed he despawned just a few seconds after he spawned. The third time I stood in the pit and killed the snakes and any gnoll patrolers that went by. Baby dropped and turned in the baby to receive the first sword then turned the sword back along with the eye and the book and now have the final sword. This was so much easier to do then the first time I tried in 2001.

Some items can indeed be charged. But the research I have found indicates only Gnome tinkered items. This is not such.

Let me help folks with this quest. I now have my 3rd one.

The gnoll that drops the baby, spawns in the same place as the snake. No special things need to be done to get him to spawn except kill the snake, didnt time the spawn but it seems about 7 minutes or so. It seems to take about 4-5 snakes to get the gnoll. So he is an uncommon spawn. Its random, so it may be longer or shorter.

The gnolls that drop the other quest items now are in South Karana, not in the gnoll dungeon, that dungeon has been taken over.

They run on the north end of South Karana, and go east to west, or west to east. I believe they share the same spawn cycle as lions, lioness, a named gnoll, another escaped gnoll, perhaps a cyclops, undead cyclops, 1 centaur, and 1 or 2 aviaks. Possible the Mist and Shadow wolf are also on the same cycle.

If such mobs are traveling North and South, and not east and west, they do not share the same mob spawn cycle. Note some of these mobs travel north and south, as well as east to west. You are concerned only with east to west (or west to east)mobs. While elephants may also travel east to west (&west to east) they don't seem to be on the same cycle.

I also believe there is more than 1 cycle for these mobs. I have seen 2 right after each other.

1 thing to note after you get the sword, don't try and pop the pet out if you have a familiar. You will waste a charge and not get the pet. You can't have both up.

Please note the pet is not a proc, you have to hold the sword and click on it to pop it.

Also I have tried turning in the sword with empty charges and see if it comes back charged, it does not. Nor can you trick the NPC and get the sword by giving him the intermediate one. The only way thats gonna work is if someone turned in the other items 1st.

An uncharged sword does not sell for anything, nor can it be donated to Tribute. And destroy it before you turn in new quest items before you get a new one. They are lore. So you may lose your quest items and not get the sword!

Got my 4th one now, and wanna update the info on this quest.

This time around took the longest. Couldn't get a Lteth Val Scribe to spawn.

However I want to correct my assumption that the ph's and named's on the quest are west to east only. Not true, as I saw some of the PH's going north and south. that is if they are PH's, assuming so, because they were the escaped gnolls.

I am also fairly certain I seen a one eyed gnoll going north and south as well.

This time around I saw 10 One Eyed gnolls before ever getting the scribe. Dont know wat happened there, bad luck?

I also wanna state that these guys also run along the same wall as the pegusus. I believe its the west wall. So if a person stays on the north end and west end of the zone, you will see these quest mobs.

However, as noted, some go north and south, and seen these on the north end of the zone. I do not know how far south they go. So it may be possible that the whole zone is available to find these mobs. But staying in North end seems best, as many of the spawns walk there east to west. and you can catch the north south ones there when they come thru. I would walk the west wall before ever considering the whole zone as well.

I recommend those that want the sword, that after getting the baby and handing it in to get the intermediate version, run back grab the baby again, to save time since your so close anyways.

I also use the Guild Hall North Karana port for this, as it ports you next to the north end of the South Karana zone in.

In essence you can have one charged sword, one intermediate sword, and 1 baby.

I also want to comment on the quest mob in Blackburrow. The snake isn't really a PH. Cause both appear at the same time, and the quest mob stands right next to it. However when you kill the snake, there is a chance that the quest mob will spawn on the next recycle when the snake pops. Unless it is just a perfectly timed spawn next to the snake. Some suggest that its a 30 minute one. However I have seen 2 in a row, about 7 minutes apart. So that theory is wrong.

If you turned them in in the order you posted then you did it wrong. Here's what you do:

Turn in the baby and you will get the Gnoll Slayer (Intermediate)

Then...Do this turn-in

Gnoll Slayer (Intermediate) + Gnoll's Eye + Journal of Greater Enchantment

You will be rewarded with the Gnoll Slayer (Final)

This DOES work. I've done it this way at least 3 times with my Ranger.

I tried turning in just the sword for the final version and it didn't work. He gave it back just as it was before with the standard message of "I don't need this. You can have it back."

Now if that has changed in the last year I'll find out soon enough. I'll be using the last charge on the sword in a couple of days. I'll let you all know how it goes with another "sword only" turn in.
wtf??
# Apr 13 2007 at 5:28 AM Rating: Decent
Precisely.
The sad thing is, you probably could have handed the sword right back to him and received the Final version.

# Jul 07 2007 at 10:21 PM Rating: Decent
I decided to try it your way just for the sake of argument and I can tell you this:

I hailed Marton and gave him the final version of the sword once I used the last charge on it. It went poof and I got nothing back. Just like the time I tried it over a year ago.

The funny thing about the normal turn in this time though is not only did I get the final version for the turn-in. I also got the original sword back. That was too weird.

Took the advice of most and after waiting and waiting, I started killing lions and centaurs just south of where the raiders are in SK (killing raiders are nice too, helps with faction for Karana residents if you did what I did and killed the Millers). Within a few minutes of doing this, the scribe popped. After I killed him and looted the book, the escaped splitpaw popped twice, killed both, and one-eyed popped. Not sure, but I can bet one of the centaurs or lions started the cycle, as I had absolutely nothing for hours until then.

As for old Bungle, go down to the pit, be there no later than 9PM game time. Kill both snakes there and keep the pit clear of them. I've noticed that at about 11PM a patrolling gnoll guard walks across the path above Bungle's spawn point, I kill him too. Consistently now for the last attempts Bungle has spawned right at about midnight or so game time, give or take.

At least it works for me. I love having this sword, and I do keep the handins as back up for when I burn both charges.
Scribe and One eyed gnoll in SK
# Oct 13 2006 at 6:03 PM Rating: Decent
I have always found the Scribe and One Eyed gnoll in the extreme northern part of SK, usually near the graveyard. They path east/west (or west/east) so if they are not up, I kill anything moving along that path as well. Eventually they always spawn for me, although I have had it take an hour before.

i tryed camping the one eyed gnoll the other day for a few hours with my 52 druid. i was not the only one in the zone there were 2 lvl 70 rangers in the zone so i asked them to check thier tracking to see if either one was up. with no luck i gave it up. if anyone has a new loc or even a more to date screen shot of him would be most helpful. i understand that they are wonders now so it would be kind of hard to pin down.

Yeah, the quest is even easier now than it was before the Splitpaw revamp. Now the 2 mobs you need to kill are runnin around in South Karana. Most of the time that I pop in there, they are already spawned and just runnin around. This entire quest never takes me more than an hour to complete, and is well worth the time and effort. I love how people freak out the first time they see my ranger running around with a spiritwolf. The novelty of it alone is worth the effort.
