You say, 'Hail, Nivold Predd'

Nivold Predd says 'What do you want? Do not disturb me lest you plan to assist in my [summoning of Dread].'

You say, 'I will assist in the summoning of Dread.'

Nivold Predd says 'There are some components essential to the summoning of the avatar of Dread. I require the eye of a griffon, some [powder of reanimation], the brain of the Ishva Mal, and the toes of an ice giant. Fetch me these reagents so that we may summon the avatar to forge a shield worn only by the mightiest apostles of Cazic-Thule.'

You say, 'What powder of reanimation?'

Nivold Predd says 'There is a gnome necromancer who has been experimenting with a powder used in reanimating long dead organic tissue. He is known to frequent places populated by undead in order to pursue his research. Seek him out and procure a bit of his powder.'

Khrix Fritchoff can be found upstairs in Unrest.

You say, 'Hail, Khrix Fritchoff'

Khrix Fritchoff says 'Close the door and be gone, fool!! You are going to give away my hiding spot!!'

Give him a Greater Lightstone (how do you know to do this?). A "Khrix Abomination" will spawn.

Khrix Fritchoff says 'At last I may leave this place!! Good luck destroying my abomination, you will surely need it against my most powerful yet uncontrolable creation!'

Was very easy 54 monk 48 mage to kill this room 5 times. 1/2 hour spawn for ishval or PH . Rinse and repeat for Robe of Ishvall Brians and the Drop only in PAW High Level Summon corpse worth 2K
easy . Sold one of them for 5K on Trov. sever and have one in the bank.

I am working on multi-questing this with friend (I am a 51 bard, he is a 52 monk). He started a human cleric on a 3rd account that will provide us with rez's as needed and we thought that this would be a good shield to get her so...

First step we took was to hit split paw and get the brains. Entered split paw invis'd (since we didn't feel like fighting greenies). Go in and move forward until you reach the bridge (print out a map, it helps) that crosses the lake. At the bridge you simply face right and jump in. A short swim to the shore, get out and swing around right. At this point you will find the cresent shaped shallow wading pool on your right. In the middle of the pool is the "secret" entrance that you need to go through. Pass through it and surface.

The following is the manner in which we did the fights. It was safe and saved us a lot of trouble. When you surface there is a mob present, kill him right there. This is the camp for the next 4 pulls. One of you should go to the door and pull the 2 guards that are present, bring them to camp, both green to a 51, kill em. Now the hard fight happens, go back to the door and have one of you enter and single pull a guard from the entrance to the fire room that Ishva is located in. Bring him back to the camp. This guy is a pain in the neck. You can cast damage spells and will complete heal. Before we got the mez down to interrupt the casting of the complete heal he would get 5 CH's off and still have plenty of mana to nuke, so be aware. The problem that we had is that I would mez to interrupt the CH cast and we would continue fighting, so we got the message that he was mez'd but since the cast time for a CH is so long it would just mez him a sec during the cast, it would still go off. So we had to stop attacking and mez, wait, wait, ok, can attack again. Listen to the sound of the cast, nukes were interrupted with little problem, one mez does it. The second guard (right side of the door to the fire room) was pulled to the camp and taken down fast. He casted offensive spells (including charm, which I realized as my partner proceeded to pound on me) which were interrupted easily. Next pull Ishva. That fight can be done in the hall outside his room. He has a pet, drop him fast, then kill the pet. Loot up and head out. We had to kill him 3 times before the brain dropped. It is No-Drop

Note: the way out has a gate that cannot be opened. You simply wait for a mob to come by on the other side and attack him. The gate will open, you kill him and leave.

Second is the griffon. Hit Nk and kill one. Our fight took 12 seconds, I lost about ¼ of a bubble, he lost none. Eye is No-Drop

Thrid off to Everfrost. We got there to find that the ice giants were camped. Not happy. So we asked if they had any spare toes. They wanted to know why we needed one (since they had so many) and they gave us one. Off to Unrest. Dropable

Fourth hit the manor. This is the first time we had our cleric with us. We wanted her to loot this part. I think it was no drop. We cleared the halls on the second floor, found Khrix and had the cleric turn in the light stone. We went around and dropped the spawn (dark blue to 51, but a total wuss). Cleric looted. Just for the hell of it we killed Khrix to see if we could get the lightstone back, see what he dropped, and could improve my faction with gemcutters (bard epic faction). He dropped nothing and nuked hard. Monkie lost about 50% of health, me none.

Now all that is left is multiquesting the Paineel turn in. We will spend some time in the warrens to improve our faction and see if it could be multiquested. If all goes well we will have a shield in a matter of a week!

i've not heard of "gemcutters" but if you meant "gemchoppers" that isn't anything to do with bards, its the gnomish warrior faction, he drops "dark reflection" faction, this faction is gnomish beberbrox(SP?) worshiping faction. "dark reflection" and "gemchopper" dont like each other, "gemchopper" quests lower "dark reflection" faction and vica versa. kill him again and see if i'm correct.
Clues to complete the Quest

Clues for the Summon of the Dread quest.

Below you will find my recommendations for a cleric to complete this quest, I did not include Locs and precise details so this quest remains fun and challenging enough.

Basic Starting requirements:
This quest is for a Human or Erudian Cleric only.
It is recommended to have an amiably faction with the cleric Nivold Predd in the cleric guild in Paineel. (Kill kobolds in the Warrens for faction)
You need one Greater light Stone. (Drop from a willowisp in the Karana's)
A map from Eqatlas of Split Paw and Unrest.

Starting the quest:
Once you have enough faction not to be KOS in Paineel, go see Nivold Predd in the cleric guild and start the quest, its fairly straight forward.

He will tell you to gather the following items for him to summon the Dread.
An eye of a Griffon.
Ice giant Toes.
Reanimation Powder.
Brain of The Ishva.

1) Eye of the Griffon drops only from “A Griffon” not the others in the Karana's, not a common drop, be patient.
Recommended group: Druid level 40 and Cleric 40, to track, nuke and fear kite the Griffons.

2) Ice giant toes drop from Ice Giants in Everfrost.
Recommended group: Three tanks a druid and cleric in upper 30s using the druid to Dot Kiting, the group in wolf form is a nice strategy.

3) Reanimation Powder.
Objective:
You need to give a greater light stone to Khrix a gnome Necro on the second floor in unrest for him to make him Spawn a Ghoul name “Khrix’s Abomination”.
Action plan:
A) Take 2 tanks a druid and a cleric; use invis to undead and go to the second floor in Unrest. Once on the second floor facing the stairs to the third floor, make a 45-degree left turn. You will see one door facing you and one to the right. Open the door facing you and kill the Mob in that closet. This is the closet where the Khrix’s Abomination will spawn.
B) Come out of the closet make a right and get in front of the Khrix’s Closet. Now the tricky part, Khrix’s does not like good individuals such as pally and others. In my case as a Cleric from Quellious I had my group step back before opening the closet door to Khrix so he would not attack anyone. Try hailing him, if like in my case does not want to talk, just give him the GLS, you will get faction and he will wish you good luck in killing the abomination. Go back to the other closet and kill the Ghoul, it will drop the reanimation powder.

4) Now for the hard part, Finding Ishva Mal for his brains.
You need a strong well balanced mid 40s group to get to Ishva, in our case we had a PAL, WAR, SK, WIZ a Druid and me the Cleric.
The druids role was to buff, nuke root and gate us the hell out of there. …(The usual), the wiz was very important to finish the mobs with nukes; due to the Gnolls chain casting heals.
You need to use Eqatlas map to at least get close to find him, see location #5 on map.
There is maybe more than one way to get to him, but this what we did:
We got to the second bridge and jumped to the left in the water, killed the water snakes or such, swam to the right to the land. On land we killed the Mobs and moved inland more until we found a small rock island with a small river. Once on the rock, look down and you will see an underwater tunnel (better use enduring breath for the poor swimmers). Under water, follow the tunnel and at last go all the way up to the air and land.
Ihsva Mal spawns in a room with a campfire inside a small labyrinth, the labyrinth will be with mean Gnoll clerics and guards, so be prepared. Ihsva spawn every 30 minutes, and will drop every time the Brains.

Finishing the quest:
Once you have all four items, go to Paineel and restart the quest with Nivold Predd, make sure you disband from your group, do this solo, if not, you could get a nasty surprise. The summoning of the dread is a difficult procedure for Nivold and faction is key.
Give Nivold all four items and ignore his complaints about that you should have given him all four items (he obviously does not know how to count). In exchange he will give you a Mundane shield AC 4. Nivold will then summon an avatar of the Dread in an adjacent room in the cleric guild. The Avatar (Golem) will spawn in the same room where a Spirit chanter does. Once in the room give the Mundane shield to the avatar and Voila!

I would like to thank my guild Eternal Empires for helping me do this quest and the players that have listed some clues on the Allakhazam site.

Ok, some additions to this quest

I completed this quest last evening... very satisfying.... took me 2 days to do faction in the Warrens using Word of Divine. Basically go in and bash a half dozen, find a spot for 3 or 4 together to boot, and then whammo (when spell wasnt interrupted of course), get faction +heretics 7 or 8 in one spell cast.. do this a few times, meditate and repeat ad nauseum.

Additionally, Khrix was not in his little closet when I got there with my trusty warrior. We cleared the whole house practically except the basement just in case... of course the was not the problem... once he did spawn he conned dubious to me and did not talk about powder until I stated what powder... then he mentioned, give him the GLS and the Abomination will spawn in the room behind him (behind a door). I did get experience off of the abomination at 50, but and easy fight for a 56 warrior and 50 cleric.

Griffon Eye easy to get in North Karana and I soloed that.

Brain was a 2 hour camp, but bonus got the robe, the spell, the brain, and some rune.

Auction to toes in Everfrost and paid 18pp for mine.

Went to Paineel, and handed the stuff to NPC, and instead of giving me shield he gave me a temporary one, and a summoned Dread Avatar started hollering, "avatar of dread shouts 'Grrrraaaaarrrrrg!! The stench of fear permeates the walls of this city! I will forge one item for the faithful of our Lord Cazic-Thule!! Make haste! My time here is short! ".. I was not expecting this part. He is a rock creature that spawns in a room off of the chamber with Nivold Predd, actually spawns in one of the rooms with Spirit Chanter. Give him the shield that Predd gave you and then you get your shield... take some faction as well doing this...
Heretics got better.
DeepwaterKnights got worse.
GateCallers got worse.
Craftkeepers got worse.
CrimsonHands got worse.

Well, I am a 37th level Dark Elven Cleric and I just want to say THANKS VERANT. Once again, those of us who take up the dark side can't get in on the fun of another good item. Guess all that time in Paw and looting Ishva Mal's brain was all for nought. Ah well, life goes on and at a level a day, I will be doing bigger and better things. As for the brains, they can sit in my bank as a part of my interesting, but useless collection of things other Clerics can use. Hats off to all the light skins of Norrath.

There are two rewards listed for this quest:

2. Terror Forged Mask

Does this quest actually produce both items? Does it give one or the other randomly? What's the deal here?

I'm a 52 lvl human cleric if Marr. To raise faction kill Kobolds in the Warrens. I killed 1747 Kobolds to get enouph faction. I tracked that with EQdiary, a log parser. In any case 1747 kills later was enouph to get a key from the Paineel guards, to get into Paineel, to do the quest. Remember there is anti-train code in the warrens. You can have no more the 3 mobs on you at any one time. What I would do was agro 3 who would then follow me, then run near a group of 3 or 4 others, cast an AoE spell which kill them all, and get 5 to 7 faction hits per cast, rinse and repeate. The best place to do this was back by the prince. Not many hunt near prince so you are not taking kills for the lower level people there.

When I got to the end of this quest, I was surprised to see that the guy that gives the quest didn't actually give me the shield, he gave me another no drop shield and summoned the Avatar of Dread. The Avatar looks like a big granite creature, and you have to find and give him the shield you get from the quest guy. He had spawned nearby in the room with a Spirit Chanter. Just give him that shield and he gives you the Dread Forged Shield. Also, I am a cleric of Mithaniel Marr and got my faction up by killing Erudite guards. It didn't take long to get my faction up enough to do the quest.

there are a couple ways to bring up faction. both are long as you have repeat it over and over. either give lightstones and GLS to DE in So Ro, or kill the erudite guards in Tox.

Giving LS and GLS to the the drow Smith in South Ro will not help you with the heretics. You get faction with Dark Bargainers, Dread Guard Outer, and Dread Guard Inner from the turn ins. Those factions are the dark elf merchants and the two dark elf guard factions around Neriak, and have nothing at all to do with the Erudite heretics.
One way to do it...
