Hail Ernax the Scholar on the first floor of the library in Paineel. He wll ask to leave him be because he his reading about mana storage devices.
Tell him 'I wish to speak to you on a matter of the soul', he answers he hasn't heard anyone say that in a while and is surprised that you want to follow the legacy of azraxs. Ermax gives you a Tattered Book and asks you to follow and write down the instructions on it and then give the book back to him. Give the book back to Ernax and you get a Soul Trap Box, a 4 slot container with a combine button. The book explains how to make a Soul Trap. The needed components are a bloody mantle, the heart of a druid of reknown, and a crystal of capturing. These items need to be combined in a Soul Trap Box (which he gives you.) The book also says that the completed Soul Trap miust be given to the soul you wish to manipulate. The bloody mantle comes from the assassin, which is a level 50 mob that randomly spawns from Faydwer to the Karanas, to Everfrost. The druid of reknown is Alicia Peaceheart in Gfaydark, who drops a heart when killed. The crystal of capturing is made by Jalen Goldsinger the Tox forest. Ernax the Scholar in the Paineel Library asks not to be bothered as he is studying mana storage devices. When asked about a crystal of capturing, he responds that Jalen Goldsinger in the Tox forest can make them. When hailed, Jalen Goldsinger only comments about the murkyness of Tox forest. But when asked about the Heretics or about a Crystal of Capturing, Jalen says that he will make you one if you will bring him some of the components. He requires a Potion of Sorrow and 1000 gold. Jalen Goldsinger says, 'Excuse me while I add some other items to this mix. There. Finished. Here you go, and thank you for your business.' Your faction standing with Gate Callers has been adjusted by 3. Your faction standing with High Guard of Erudin has been adjusted by 1. Your faction standing with High Council of Erudin has been adjusted by 1. Your faction standing with Heretics has been adjusted by -1. You gain experience! The potion of sorrow is obtained from Gorth Bearsoul in Halas. He is the new barbarian in the torc shop who, when hailed, always responds with something about "not bothering a man when he is making potions" or some such. Ask him about the potion of sorrow and you get: "Ach! What ye be needin that fer? Only those of dark magic require such a thing and by my mother, never could i sell to such a soul. If yer soul be clean then put yer (money) in this enchanted pouch and i will know your intent. If yer soul be rotten i'll be known and you'll be dead. Indifferent I better be to your actions." Following up on the money hint gets you: "Suren ye didnae think I'd give ye a potion fer free? I'm needn 500 gold coins to make such an item. Hard to make and few are the uses fer such a potion." Give him 500gp and you get a Potion of Sorrow (magic item, lore, no drop). Combine these items in the box and give the completed soul trap to the Tormented Soul (must have a faction of at least kindly) and you will receive a Mantle of Souls. Completing this quest supposedly will greatly increase your faction with the Lich Miragul. You say, 'Hail, Tormented Soul' Tormented Soul says, 'Whaaat foool does seek counsel with this spirit?' Handing in: Tormented Soul says, 'Ahhh. Sweet release. Wait... What is this? No! Do not bind me to this filthy bit of leather! Release! Curse you and curse Azrax to damnation!' Your faction standing with Heretics could not possibly get any better (I believe this is 15 - all other similar quests are 1 for 1) Your faction standing with Deepwater Knights has been adjusted by -15. Your faction standing with Gate Callers has been adjusted by -15. Your faction standing with Craftkeepers has been adjusted by -15. Your faction standing with Crimson Hands has been adjusted by -15. You gain experience! He depops and a new one takes his place almost immediately. Not sure what the point of that is... Tormented Soul says, 'Was oonncee... aliiive...' Warrens give Heretic faction but either it doesn't give it to you if you're too high, or it's pitifully little because killed ALOT of kobolds with zero faction change.

Just wanted to post another succesful combination for the druid's heart. I tried to take her out solo at first (She's blue to a level 46) but was resisted too much on my second round of darkness and died from her powerful blasts (she does have alot of hitpoints). I summoned my lvl 54 druid pet and we had no problems taking her out. He snared, I feared, and then we covered her with dots.

finaly got the people together and after an incredibly hellacious fight (had a 42 necro, a 42 pally, a 47th pally, a 51 druid, and a 53rd druid. both pallies LoH were used and all were OOM half way into the fight) we finally drop the DA... and guess what's on him...bloody mantle? NO!! a bloody dirk! so what the hell is this thing for? i was under the impression from all of ye that the bloody mantle drops every time. can anyone clue me in?

With the opening of the Warrens you can apparently improve your faction with the Heretics by killing Kobolds in the new zone. From what I've read killing Kobolds also improves some of the Erudin factions and has no downside factions except for the Kobolds themselves. If true this would be the only way to improve Heretic faction without a corresponding decrease in one or more Erudin factions.
I got the bloody mantle from the Dark Assassin last night, and I already had someone help me multi-quest the potion part. All I need now is the heart from Alania and to improve my faction. This method will be good because currently I can walk through Erudin proper (not the Palace with the caster guilds) from the dock to Tox forest without fear of attack, and it would be a pain to have to try to sneak through if I couldn't get a teleport.

Finished this quest tonight, with my level 36 necromancer, he had Kindly rated faction with the Heretics.
Dark assassin has alot of hp and spawns in the SW corner of everfrost (SW corner after your out of the silly maze)
Alicia Peaceheart (sp?) spawns in gfay at 1200,1300 (both pos) and her place holder is a giant wasp drone. Don't kill the orc pawn that spawns nere by because its the PH for a high level druid NPC that probly wont like you.
The Crystal of Capturing is eazy to multi quest.

Just killed her tonight.
Well, all was already said here.
She will spawn at pos 1400, pos 1200.
Her ph is ALWAYS a giant wasp drone and pop every 25 mins, not difficult to see it, it's the only wasp who wonder around. Just wait a bit and you will see Alania or the wasp coming, both have the same pathing.
But now, Faelin Bloodbriar can be a pain. She DON'T spawn at the same spot but run close. Her PH is ALWAYS an orc pawn easy to identify (both use same path too and do a little turn on themselves at 1400, 1200) so don't kill the pawn to avoid Faelin spawn.
Faelin will despawn only if a druid do his FA quest as far I see tonight. She popped 3 times and depoped only when a high level druid came for his FA.
When waiting Aliana, just go at 1200, 1300 and look east, you will see the Alania/wasp spot, Faelin runing all around but out of her agro range.
This camping can be long and boring as the only thing you have to kill is the wasp every 25 mins (took me 12 hours before Alania came).
If you are lucky when Alania pop, Faelin won't be up and I hope it for you :).

how do i get the dam druid in gfay to spawn Alania Peaceheart been trying for months and no go. I use my druid and necro keep killing everything around those co-ordinates ie 1400,1200 and all . Email me please apavisic@bigpond.net.au

All of this quest goes exactly as stated in the above threads, except for faction. To get to warmy, all I did was go to the docks in Erudin and summon a pet. The 49th level pet with Augment Death slaughtered every guard that came near it. I killed the 3 guards on the docks, the guard inside the building on the docks, the two guarding the stairs into the city, and the two patrolling just past said stairs. Waited for re-pop, and killed them all again. That put me to warmly faction in Paineel, and viola, Mantle of the Souls. What a beautiful thing! =)

I did variation of this last night. I started by Killing 2 emissaries I found wandering in Tox then Killed Sentinel Creote when I happened upon him at the Waters edge near the Little dock in Tox. Next, I invised and went into Erudin from Tox. I parked my pet near the Teleport Stone and pulled the two Sentinels that patrol by the Library. After I killed them twice I reclaimed my pet and headed for the dock. (I hadn't read this at the time or I would have just headed straight to the dock) I went around the corner from the Dock, Medded to full, Invised then went back to the dock. I went into the nook to the right of the shop as you face it and waited until the guard patrol gave me enough time to cast my pet. I then sent my pet after the guard at the end of the dock. I Darknessed the first one then ran past him to the end of the dock. As the others came to his Aid I feared them when they stoped to beat on my pet or try and heal. After an exciting fight I had 6 Dead sentinels on the dock. They are on a very long respawn so I meditated a bit then went inside the building and killed the two in there. (They Have some very interesting pathing in there) That was enough to get my faction to warmly.

First thing I did was get the box. That is easy and everyone knows how to do it.
Second, I went to gfay. I brought up a pet and started running all over the zone. Eventually Alania attacked me out of nowhere(I guess I got lucky there). Important notes on how to kill her. I am a 52 necro and it took all my mana(I did not lich during the fight). You should open with dooming then fear her. Then DISPELL her or your pet will take a beating from her damage sheild. After that splurt and sit down. Just reapply dark and fear and splurt. I timed darkness so that it never wore off. You might want to mem screaming terror too. This is in case fear wears off towards the end. She WILL try to heal herself and fear will not interupt the cast.
Third part for me was to kill the dark assassin. I would like to take this moment to say that jboots will not cut it =P . I tried this first with myself and a 51 shaman. We were not fully ready but decided to try anyway. Since I didn't have sow he started hitting me fast and hard. I feigned and the shaman starting running. My pet and his did around 10% of damage in the 1 min the fight was going. We regrouped and called in extra help. We had me(52 necro), 51 pally, 51 shaman, 40 SK, 54 mage, and a ranger that helped track him down(assassin was standing still after the first attempt). This all went down in everfrost. The dark assassin will pass by the 2 goblin camp every 5 min(SW corner) when he is up. We had no need for pet kiting this time. All that we did was send pets and tanks then heal them. All in all we only lost one pet in the fight.
Fourth, I group-quested the crystal with the shaman. This is easy to do as well.
I cast identify on all parts to be safe and then combined for the soul trap. After that I spent about 3-4 hours raising faction with paineel. What I did was kill all the green Sentinels in tox, Algilthin(sp?), and Vinlay(sp?). I killed about 8 sentinels, the fisherman 4 times, vinlay 3 times, and also the Fathomwalker lady once. I also did the batwing and snakefang quest 40 times. I just bearly made kindly and I gave the trap to the tormented soul and got my mantle of souls.
Since the mantle is no drop does anyone else suspect it to be part of another quest? I just don't like he idea of giving the mantle to somebody to see if anything happens.

I REALLY doubt its part of another quest...its uber enough as is dont ya think? Heh just gathering info atm on the quest I am going to try it for the next week or so. Its probably NO DROP for the prestige and honor that comes in having an item of that caliber...like plane raids most of the armor and such is NO DROP...would be kinda gay to see alot of newbies running around in plane armor and the like. Only reason I would want it Drop able would to show it to people :) .

Well folks.. I just did this quest... First off the assassin is best found in Everfrost. exactly where the previous post says. The assassin doesnt always have the mantle. Unfortunately I have killed him 3 times and he has dropped the bloody dirk once, the mantle the other two times.. If u kill him I have found that he wont respawn for quite some time... You are better off leaving and coming back the following night.
The druid, Alania, is in GF and walks the path described. I have seen Bloodbriar pop up in a different area so although they walk similar paths they dont hold the same spot.
The crystal is easy. You can multiquest it with anyone of fair faction in Halas.
Lastly, faction with the Tormented Soul. U wont believe this crap but I handed it in and ZIP. I conned amiable and it wasn't enough.
This i really don't understand... Why do all this just to find that I'm not worthy of the mantle?? How bout not talking to me at all so I don't go shlepping all over Norrath for the pieces. If I could not use the pieces I could understand but get real Verant. The quest initiates with someone who gives me the quest! Let me finish it! sorry folks just venting.

A while ago my erudite necro killed Hykallen in Lavastorm, only to find that this one level 15 monster brought him from Amiable to Threatening with Heretics. Now I want to do the Mantle of Souls quest, and need faction desperately. I got up to glowering and am trying to do the wing/fang quest, but fangs aren't easy to come by in Paineel and I was wondering if anyone has found another way of raising faction? I'm level 44 btw.

completed this quest a short time ago. DA went down with a 54 necro and 51 druid. Not extremely difficult once snare is on. Wolf form outruns DA. The bloody mantle is NO DROP! Read on eqnecro that it was not no drop, so dont make this mistake. Had to kill DA twice as my necro was not in EF first time. Good luck

Please people when you know that someone has been camping for a long time, don't pester them about when they are going to leave. Don't sit down next to them to "wait" until they are done. You might be waiting a long time and then the time it takes for you to complete your camp on top of that. The NPC will always respawn and will always be there. Just ask them kindly if they will send you a tell when they are done and 9 times out of 10 they will. These players are tired from camping that long of a period and quite understandably a little grouchy and become extremely nervous at the thought of someone possibly stealing their kill. So, be courteous.

They both occupy the same spawn slot. What this means is that one is the placeholder for the other, therefore getting Alania to spawn will be MUCH harder.
They both spawn at 1400, 1200 in Greater Faydark and run in a large circle back to this point.
Faelin Bloodbriar is a new druid NPC that uses the Sisters of Errollisi (as does Alania) but will not grant any faction hits when killed (also like Alania).
The problem is that she is level 55 and HIGHLY resistant to Fear spells. Apparently she is for the druid FA style quest. By level she will summon and hits for around 150 in melee.
She was killed by myself (52 Necro) and a (57 Shaman).. tactic involved sicking my pet after laying down Darkness, Splurt, and Bond of Death. This agroed her so that I would run circles around the Shaman while he nuked (with an item) and healed me when I could not drain.

I killed Alania the other day while Faelin was up so one is not the ph for the other. From what i saw, Alania's ph is a giant wasp and is a 25 min spawn.

Ok I finished the quest this morning and am rather glad its over with. I didn't have the faction I needed to finish with the Tormented Soul so I ended up doing quite a few things to up my faction. I will elaborate:
First thing I did was get together a group of guildmates and hit the Dark Assasin. We had a druid pull and the assasin beat the hell out of him (sowed) He's fast and hits for over 100. The group of 5 - 6 people did take him out rather quickly, but like I said he doesn' hit rather hard. (We pulled him to the Rathe Mountain Zone as his location was not far from that.) It is thought that you need see invis to see him, but when he came flying in after the green little guy he had already been engaged so I can't confirm.
So Dark Assasin down and dropped Bloody Mantle (not sure if he drops this everytime as we only killed him once).
On to Alania Peaceheart. I found her in greater fay using the coordinates from an earlier post here. 1400,1200. Now I camped out there near 2 trees a large one and a small one. I was there for an hour or so one night and found her after being their 15 minutes the next morning (I had a pet up and killed everything that came close just in case she had a place holder or trigger.) Needless to say she popped up right then and there between those two trees and I wasn't even prepaired for her to do so and her hitting for over 100 and casting as well made me her girlfriend as I was the only one there. I had a friend log his wiz in and once I recovered (I was bound there and she was running her circle at mock 5 so she kept chasing me around), we went back and I dotted and feared her + pet and he dropped 4 ICs on her. She had a good amount of HPs but we got her. Now I have the heart

Had a friend go over to Hallas with his druid and talked to Gorth Bearsoul + 500 gp. Gorth is in the building facing you beyond the bank when you're walking in from the entrance. GO in the door and loop around to the left he's hiding around the corner. My druid friend purchased the potion and we gated to Tox. We found Jalen sitting in the same spot that I have seen him sitting in before. (Near one of the huts I don't remember the loc but he's alwasy there with enchanter pet) My friend gave him the potion, I gave him the 1000gp and he gave me an "Empty Soul crystal" or something like that, it wasn't called a Crystal of Capturing (the one you use to talk to him). Put them all in the Box that I got from Ermac (or Ernac the guy on the first floor of the library in paineel) and then I have a Soul Trap that looks like a box in my inven.
Now heres the part I don't see really clarified on allot of the quest descriptions. On EQlizer it says to give the trap back to Ermac(SP? <- been a long day) You do not give it back to him, you give it to the tormented soul which is in what I think is the Necromancer guild sitting on the stairs of the second floor (he is called Tormented Soul and is in ghost form). I was amiable to him and he wouldn't talk to me. There were actually 2 levels of amiable that first said something like "I can't spea with you about this" and another level of amiable that said something like "You have yet to prove yourself". I tried killing the green sents in Erudin and this only raised my heretic faction for about 8-10 kills then all of the sudden it wasn't affecting my heretic faction (don't ask me why). I then went and tried to do the Noclin's pet quest and that stupid pet of his doesn't spawn that often. It seems it was randomly spawning in the place of a decaying skelly no matter how often you hailed or initiated the quest. So I then turned to pillaging the newbie zone of bats and snakes and collecting 160 bones in the process. I turned in about 70 wings and fangs (2 wings 2 fangs, 1 in each of the 4 trade slots at a time) to the female trainer in the back room of the top floor of Necro guild (Up stairs past Tormented Soul) This brought me to kindly and then even though the soul would talk to me but not elaborate, I just said ***** it and gave him the soul trap and boom I now am the proud owner of the Mantle of Souls. 5 hours of faction fixing today.
I hope that helps clarify it, if just a little for anyone else doing the quest. Sorry I wasn't able to provide exact names and locs, but it was a rather tiring process and I did allot of it in the wee hours of the morning. DO NOT try to kill the Paladin trainer in Erudin for a faction bump with the Heretic. I'm sure he's lvl 60 (red to me at 54) and he would probably beat you silly. Just put a pet up and run around the newbie zone collecting wings and fangs. Pay the newbies to gather them up when you're turning the other ones in. Good luck

First thing I did was get together a group of guildmates and hit the Dark Assasin. We had a druid pull and the assasin beat the hell out of him (sowed) He's fast and hits for over 100. The group of 5 - 6 people did take him out rather quickly, but like I said he doesn' hit rather hard. (We pulled him to the Rathe Mountain Zone as his location was not far from that.) It is thought that you need see invis to see him, but when he came flying in after the green little guy he had already been engaged so I can't confirm.
So Dark Assasin down and dropped Bloody Mantle (not sure if he drops this everytime as we only killed him once).
On to Alania Peaceheart. I found her in greater fay using the coordinates from an earlier post here. 1400,1200. Now I camped out there near 2 trees a large one and a small one. I was there for an hour or so one night and found her after being their 15 minutes the next morning (I had a pet up and killed everything that came close just in case she had a place holder or trigger.) Needless to say she popped up right then and there between those two trees and I wasn't even prepaired for her to do so and her hitting for over 100 and casting as well made me her girlfriend as I was the only one there. I had a friend log his wiz in and once I recovered (I was bound there and she was running her circle at mock 5 so she kept chasing me around), we went back and I dotted and feared her + pet and he dropped 4 ICs on her. She had a good amount of HPs but we got her. Now I have the heart

Had a friend go over to Hallas with his druid and talked to Gorth Bearsoul + 500 gp. Gorth is in the building facing you beyond the bank when you're walking in from the entrance. GO in the door and loop around to the left he's hiding around the corner. My druid friend purchased the potion and we gated to Tox. I killed Alania Peaceheart this morning. She spawns both in GFAY and in CB. In CB she spawns in the Slave pit to the right of the castle. In GFAY she runs around the pos 1000, pos 1000 area. I had been searching for her for about 5 days and finally saw her. She has A LOT of HP for a blue to level 50. Probably around 12K. I used more than 7 Ice Comets on her. Two 50s took her with only one death, a lot of running around. She hits for about 100dmg. Off to finish the quest. Does anyone know if you can complete the quest with only amiable faction.

could a lvl 53 cleric take out alicia and the assian by his self or to hard? and is the heart and mantle no drop? if so ill have to a little stragey for logging on my cleric and logging off to loot the stuff.if you have any info can you tell me?
and for faction you can do the lost pet quest numerous times and the snake fang quest if you ont wanna lose your faction with eurdian since its only way off island which sux's ***.

What level are paladin trainers, i figured they would be like 50+? Or is there one that's lower level and safe to kill? I've just been sitting in erudin wacking the guards...faction is up to kindly now, woohoo!

Increase your faction by killing a Paladin trainer in Erudin (double BIG hit good for Heretics)
Can't find my notes with Alicia Peaceheart coordinates but she was fairly tough at 49, took all my mana and I needed a good pet. She runs VERY FAST in a large pentagram. My second attempt I was smart and started off using Nullify magic to take off her Thisle Shield and SoW, she was pretty easy.
Assasin wanders many zones. Hang around the lizard camp in Feerrott. Coming from Oggok go over bridge, turn right, first camp hang around. He wanders on the Rathe side of the camp.
Good luck. I think this is the greatest piece for shoulder, at least Pre-Kunark it was. I think there's a few 10AC shoulders out there that casters can wear, but even then.

Amiable doesn't work, has to be higher. Anyone know how to increase faction with the tormented soul?

I've been in Greater Fay for a long while and have shouted out many a time only to have people say 'who's that?' I've yet to see her personally and am getting nowhere fast. The dark assassin I've seen a lot and will deal with him once I get the heart. Does anyone know if the quest is broken on bertoxxulous or perhaps there is a placeholder that I am missing? I really want this item as it would be a nice addition to my wardrobe. Thank you all kindly for your info up to this point. I will be searching those coordinates yet again tonight after I get home from work.
