At the end of the "Ivan McMannus' Remains" quest, you see:

Renth McLanis says '...I believe ye can assist with a more [dangerous matter] as well.'

You say, 'What sort of dangerous matter?'

***Requires high aimable faction to do this quest. If your faction is not high enough, he tells you to go see Lysbith and inquire about the gnoll bounty.***

Renth McLanis says 'A murder was done in Halas recently. A couple were killed by a pair o' rogues fer a mere pouch o' copper. The shaman gave chase and the main rogue, Paglan, fell beneath an ice floe. One got away. We must [hunt the murderer]. Will ye help?'

You say, 'I will hunt the murderer.'

Renth McLanis says 'Twas good old Dok whose brother and wife were slain. Speak with him at his shop. Ask him if he has [any information about the crime]. Return the head of the murderer and I'll give ye a [Langseax].'

You say, 'What is a Langseax?'

Renth McLanis says 'The Langseax was crafted to be wielded by a warrior only. Tis a one-handed slashing weapon with great balance to assist the warrior who masters it.'

Dok may be found in Dok's Cigars (/loc?).

You say, 'Hail, Dok'

Dok says 'Fine day to ye, ______. Welcome to me shop. If ye're searchin' fer a [cigar], ye won't be findin' any, more's th' pity.'

You say, 'Do you have any information about the crime?'

Dok says 'Aye. I happened upon the crime scene, but too late, more's the pity. I grabbed fer one of the rogues and got only a handful of his shirt. Before I knew it, I was left holding his sweaty shirt and he was far from the scene. I called fer the guards and they summoned the shaman. Methinks one died and one got away in the chase. I've heard rumors that the leader of [Clan McMannus] has spotted the culprit. Ye should go to the leader of Clan McMannus and tell him ye're [searching for the fugitive].'

You say, 'Who is the leader of Clan McMannus?'

Dok says 'Methinks it is Einhorst McMannus.'

Head to the fishing village in West Karana to find Einhorst McMannus (/loc?).

You say, 'Hail, Einhorst McMannus'

Einhorst McMannus says 'Greetings, ______. Welcome to the fishing village of Clan McMannus. We sell what we can here. Have a look around but, please do not buy too much. We must save most of our stock for delivery to our home.'

You say, 'I am searching for the fugitive.'

Einhorst McMannus says 'I see they have sent someone to hunt the scoundrel down. I am afraid I haven't seen the barbarian thief in quite some time. You can search and search for him here in the western plains, but I doubt you shall find him. Good luck.'

Ulrich McMannus may also be found in the fishing village (/loc?).

You say, 'Hail, Ulrich McMannus'

Ulrich McMannus says 'Welcome to the village of McMannus. We sell many goods. Feel free to look around - just keep your hands to yourself. Good day.'

You say, 'I am searching for the fugitive.'

Ulrich McMannus says 'Searching for someone, eh? You will most likely never find them on the plains. This is a vast area. I could have Frostbite help you search. He is quite good at [tracking prey].'

You say, 'What about tracking prey?'

Ulrich McMannus says 'Frostbite can track down anyone, be they man or beast. All one needs to do is obtain a SWEATY piece of clothing recently worn by the one you seek.'

Head back to Dok in Halas.

You say, 'Hail, Dok'

Dok says 'Fine day to ye, ______. Welcome to me shop. If ye're searchin' fer a [cigar], ye won't be findin' any, more's th' pity.'

You say, 'Where is the sweaty shirt?'

Dok says 'Now, why would ye be wantin' that smelly thing?!! I no longer have it. [Tundra Jack] came into me shop and bought it from me. He says he can wash it good and make a new collar for Iceberg out of it.'

You say, 'Where is Tundra Jack?'

Dok says 'Well, now, let's see... His name is Tundra Jack.. me first guess would be that ye might find him on the frozen tundra of Everfrost, eh?'

Tundra Jack wanders through Everfrost Peaks.

You say, 'Hail, Tundra Jack'

Tundra Jack says 'Good mining to you, kid! What are you doing way out here? You're gonna catch frostbite. The name's Tundra Jack, prospector supreme. Trained by the finest miners in Kaladim!! Me 'n [Iceberg] have been out here for three years now, searchin' fer fortune.'

You say, 'I need that sweaty shirt.'

Tundra Jack says 'Looking fer that blasted shirt, huh? Well, as you can smell, I didn't get to washing it, but I wrapped it onto Iceberg's collar. I'd say you can have it, but Iceberg kind of likes it now. The only way you're gonna be able to grab it from him is to feed him his [favorite meal].'

You say, 'What is his favorite meal?'

Tundra Jack says 'Iceberg has some picky eating habits. If he can't catch any goblins, he prefers [Lion Delight]. Lion Delight is his favorite.'

You say, 'Where can I get Lion Delight?'

Tundra Jack says 'I usually get Lion Delight from Teria O'Danos in Halas.'

Head back to Halas to find Teria O'Danos at -6, 34.

You say, 'Hail, Teria O`Danos'

Teria O`Danos says 'Good day to ye! Ye look a wee bit hungrry. I sell many fine foods. Please have a look. Might I suggest the [lion roast]? It is a wee bit expensive, but well worth it.'

You say, 'What lion roast?'

Teria O`Danos says 'The lion roast is quite good. Tis me specialty. Ah marinate the lion meat in mammoth fat fer two days before roasting it. Lion meat isn't common around here. I'll purchase what I can from strangers but I rely mostly on shipments from the Plains o' Karana. I'm presently searching fer someone to [pick up me lion meat shipment].'

You say, 'I will pick up the lion meat shipment.'

Teria O`Danos says 'It'd be grand o' ye to pick up me lion meat shipment. Ye must travel to the Plains o' Karana. Search fer a Northman fishing village. It should be Clan McMannus. Speak with the chieftain, Einhorst. Tell him ye're there to [pick up the lion meat shipment for Halas]. When ye return, I'll pay ye at least three gold. I look forward to yer return.

Complete the "Lion Meat Shipment" sub-quest to receive Lion Delight. Return to Tundra Jack and Iceberg and give the Lion Delight to Iceberg.

Iceberg growls with happiness and licks your face. Just enough time to swipe the sweaty shirt from his collar!! Iceberg then runs off to enjoy his lion delight!!

Your faction standing with Wolves of the North has been adjusted by 2.
Your faction standing with Shamen of Justice has been adjusted by 1.
Your faction standing with Merchants of Halas has been adjusted by 1.
Your faction standing with Steel Warriors has been adjusted by 1.
You gain experience!!

Tundra Jack says 'Ha!! Looks like old Iceberg likes you. Either that or he's tasting you.'

Head back to West Karana and find Frostbite in a pen at -3533, -2236.

You say, 'Hail, Frostbite'

Frostbite RUFF RUFF

Give Frostbite the Sweaty Shirt.

Frostbite takes a whiff of the sweaty shirt and barks.
You gain experience!!

Frostbite runs off to the Northeast, tracking the murderer. He runs quickly so have Spirit of Wolf or the equivalent active. The murderer will either be Paglan or Basil. Once you find one of them (you may find Basil at -1436, -4816 while he is running):

You say, 'Hail, Basil'

Basil says 'To the death!!'

He attacks. Once he's dead:

You have slain Basil!
Your faction standing with Rogues of the White Rose has been adjusted by -5.

--You have looted a Barbarian Head.--

This identifies as "Basil's Head." Paglan drops another Barbarian Head which identifies as "Paglan's Head." Head back to Renth in Halas and give him the head.

Renth McLanis says 'Fine work! We've avenged our fellow Northmen and ye've earned yer Langseax. Wield it in the name o' Halas!'

The faction hits are negative, which is probably broken.

Your faction standing with Wolves of the North has been adjusted by -10.
Your faction standing with Shamen of Justice has been adjusted by -2.
Your faction standing with Merchants of Halas has been adjusted by -2.
Your faction standing with Steel Warriors has been adjusted by -1.
You gain experience!!
You receive 8 gold from Renth McLanis.

You receive the Langseax.

I was one of the original people sending this info to this site on this quest.

Some of you have got a lot of misconceptions and just plan wrong.

First of all, how you check your faction is by asking Renth, "what dangerous matter?" If you have the faction to turn in the head he will respond. Now this is like the second step in a multipart quest. The FIRST step is the remains quest which triggers this quest at the NPC when finished. He gives you some line about proving yourself and possibly taking on a dangerous matter. I have known BARBARIANS that had to work for weeks to get the faction to do this quest.

One of the better quests in the game really, long story line and not really straight forward what to do. It is a really challenging quest to do it right without the spoiler.

Most non-barbarians will be KOS getting the faction to complete this quest, at least it was almost 2 years ago. So don't expect to be banking in Halas. It has been since the summer of 1999 since I ran this quest so it might have changed a lot on the factions.

Basil and Paglan can spawn ANYWHERE in WK, not just by the cyclops although they often do. Personally I think the ogres are more dangerous since the caster is a shaman and can root you. I have gone anywhere from due north to due east following frostbite. And as far as almost to NK or as close as 500 clicks away, within sight. Most of the time from my experience you will catch up to him about dead middle of the zone east to west and north to south. Yes that is close to the cyclops hill.

There used to be a line of barbarians waiting to do this quest at the village back then and it goes pretty quick. As soon as frostbite reaches the murderer, he turns around and comes back. Now if he gets killed or someone kills him (there is a quest that requires him to be killed) it takes about 20-25 minutes for him to respawn.

Yes you need sow or have one monster system, broadband connection, and a master straffer to keep up.

It was a fun quest really doing it the first time without a spoiler. Especially since the clues are often vague about what to do next, like where you go to get the lion delight and not getting the trigger about the dangerous matter until I finished the remains quest.

The Langseax and the LoW might not seem like much now compared to a lot of weapons out there but pre-kunark either was an excellent weapon until you could go after better around level 30-35.

My warrior is a Wooden Elf, and I had some faction problem to finish this quest. By making the Gnoll Fangs Quest, I became able to finish it correctly. But I gave more than 100 fangs to the Barbarian Warrior Guild to have the good faction (Kindly). And pay attention that making this quest lower your faction with the Halas banker. If you want to do this quest lot of time, go to Qeynos bank (South part of the city).

I already have the barbarian head.Killed him while passing through WK.do i need to perform the quest to be able to get the sword or can i just turn in the head now.and does my faction with Renth have to be amiable before he will give it to me?

There are different grades within amiable. Low amiable faction doesn't seem to be quite good enough, but once you're amiable and turn in a few gnoll fangs, you'll be able to do the quest even though it still says amiable. Best bet though is to up it to warmly / kindly.
Another option

Why follow that stupid dog and die?

You give the dog the shirt

The rest of your party, which should include at least one ranger, is sitting in the NE corner of WK waiting for the spawn. As soon as he spawns they kill him.

Easy as pie (assuming you can get a group)
No more SteelWarrior faction
# Oct 24 2000 at 12:08 PM Rating: Default
This quest doesn't give any SteelWarrior faction. You get good faction when you complete one part of the quest (handing in the lion meat? forgot) but you lose faction when you kill Basil or Paglan, so net faction for Steel Warriors is ZERO.
#Anonymous, Posted: Oct 12 2000 at 3:09 PM, Rating: Sub-Default, (Expand Post) I think I can speak for everyone on this topic. Please people when you know that someone has been camping for a long time, don't pester them about when they are going to leave. Don't sit down next to them to "wait" until they are done. You might be waiting a long time and then the time it takes for you to complete your camp on top of that. The NPC will always respawn and will always be there. Just ask them kindly if they will send you a tell when they are done and 9 times out of 10 they will. These players are tired from camping that long of a period and quite understandably a little grouchy and become extremely nervous at the thought of someone possibly stealing their kill. So, be courteous.

Hi, I am a 30 wiz on the Tribunal, and i did this quest last week and noticed that when i turned in the barbarian head to receive the langseax the faction hits were all different: specifically, there was no hit with the rogues for turning in the head. But i am already KoS with the banker, so it matters not to me =)

Great Quest for Mid Levels

I have done this quest many times, and have been lucky enough to have gotten the Langseax of the Wolves. At 26th level my warrior is still doing big damage with this sword. I use 2 langseax's for dual wield weps, but at 26th these weapons are weak at best. The Lanseax is a great dual wield wep from 13-20, and a very good 1hs from 1-13.

One point about this quest. If you are not SOWed, or do not have someone along that can track you are in for a long, and dangerous search for Basil/Paglan. Frostbite runs at just under SOW speed, and he will run away from you.
#Anonymous, Posted: Aug 16 2000 at 5:35 AM, Rating: Sub-Default, (Expand Post) My view on this subject really doesnt matter because I just bought the game and havent even downloaded the patch yet.

If you are going to try this quest solo, please be warned where Frostbite is going to lead you. The barbarian murderer, be it Paglan or Basil, spawns in the NE corner of WK- yup, you have to go right past where the named cyclops spawn, right past the ogre temple, and right thru the hill giant spawning area. Frostbite doesn't care- they don't bother him; be assured, they WILL bother YOU! Forstbite will actually go right thru the ogre temple. At 29th, the guards are mostly high blue to me, but the named ogre is most definitely RED and will (in fact, DID) kill me. The cyclops will smack you around pretty good as well (yellow to me at 29).
I did the quest once, killing Paglan. He was pretty easy....it was the werewolf that decided to jump in that made it interesting.....
What's even better, Renth won't give me the quest even though I am amiable to him, having spent about 4 hours killing gnolls in BB for their teeth. I turned in 45 of them to get from apprehensive to amiable...now back to BB. At least I didn't go ahead and give Renth the barbie head.....

The food search order appears to be different than the default placement order (the one used when purchasing or right-click looting)

Looting: first checks for an open main space in order, then looks through any containers in the same order for an open spot of sufficient size. Note, stacking items first search the same way for a partial stack to add , then continue as above.

Eating: checks each slot in order, if the slot has a container, it is checked before moving on to the next slot.

Also note that slots are checked in numbered order (down the left, then down the right) while container contents are checked left-to-right and advance to the next row.

Therefore, the safest way if you're not sure is to put the food in the top row of a bag/pack, and the Lion Delight in the bototm of the same pack.
RE: Feed Me

Even better, put your food in general slot 1 (or a container therein), and the lion delight in any other general slot (or a container therein).

Simpler Version
# Jul 09 2000 at 12:10 AM Rating: Excellent

Okay, somebody asked for a complete walkthrough, so here it is:
Go to Halas. Find McDaniel's Smokes and Spirits, and Renth McLanis is standing next to the table
by the staircase in full armor. Consider him. He must con at least 'amiably' for this to work. If he
doesn't, you need to raise faction with the 'Wolves of the North'.
If he cons indifferent, dubiously, threateningly, or ready to attack, you need to raise your faction.
(duh). Go to Blackburrow and kill lots of gnolls. I conned dubiously to Renth and it took me about
four stacks of fangs to get my faction up. It won't take long, those gnolls are easy :-) Turn in the
fangs to Lysbeth at the Warrior arena. She is also in full armor.
After you have gotten your faction high enough, go to West Karana and head straight South of the
Qeynos Hills zone. You will come to a barbarian village on the coast. Down near the coast, in the
hut farthest to the East, is Misla McMannus. She is dressed in leather. Target her and say 'I will
deliver the lion meat'. She gives you a box of lion meat.
Take the lion meat back to Halas. Just after you get off the dock, there is a merchant named Teria
O'Dannos. Give the box to her and she will give you some Lion's Delight. DO NOT EAT THE
LION'S DELIGHT!!! Put it as far from your normal food as possible.
Run out into Everfrost. At loc -2000, -3800 there is a tower. It is called Megan's Tower. Wait here
for Tundra Jack and Iceberg, his huge polar bear. Hail Tundra Jack and Iceberg will show up a few
seconds later. Target Iceberg, and give him the Lion's Delight. You then get a sweaty shirt. You
won't have to wait more than 15 minutes for Tundra Jack.
Take the sweaty shirt back to the barbarian fishing village where you got the box from Misla. There
is an animal pen next to one of the houses. Frostbite spawns here. He may not be there when you
get there, but it doesn't take him long to show up. Target him and give him the sweaty shirt. After a
few seconds (sometimes you have to wait a little, but he'll always go) he'll run. Make sure you have
a SoW, as he goes at a little slower than SoW speed.
Frostbite will attack any monsters that he sees, and you should protect him. He'll lead you up into
the mountains at the far side of the zone. Watch out for bandits and the 2 cyclopses. If one of these
attacks you, you have a SoW, so keep running in the direction Frostbite is going and you'll hit the
zone soon. You'll either find Basil the barbarian, who wears a kilt and is about level 20, but he hits
pretty hard. Or, he'll lead you to Paglan, who is in full armor and is about level 25.
After you have killed the NPC Barbarian, loot the NO DROP head and take it back to Halas. If
you plan to do the quest again, go ahead and get another box from Misla on your way back. Go
back to Renth in McDaniel's Smokes and Spirits and hand him the head! Then you can go deliver
the box and start again!
Hope this clears a lot of things up
