This quest is given by Guard Valon at the toll booth in the Commonlands.

You say, 'Hail, Guard Valon'

Guard Valon says, 'Greetings, traveler! If you wish to walk upon the road to Freeport, you will pay the toll of two silver pieces. And you should. It is not safe to stray from the pathway. There are many [dangers in the Commonlands].'

You say, 'dangers in the Commonlands'

Guard Valon says, 'The orcs have been a nuisance of late. Many travelers have perished at the hands of the orc pawns. Would you like to [assist the Freeport Militia] in ridding the lands of the orcs?'

You say, 'assist the Freeport Militia'

Guard Valon says, 'Sir Lucan would be proud! Patrol the Commonlands and watch for any orc pawns. Should you find any orc pawn picks on them, I will pay you for every four you return to me. Be off, then! For the glory of Freeport!'

1. Hand Guard Valon 4 Orc Pawn Picks

Task Text: Valon has a bounty on orc pawns and will take their picks from you four at a time in exchange for faction and a small amount of coin.

Turn-in results in the following faction:

Your faction standing with The Freeport Militia has been adjusted by 3.
Your faction standing with Coalition of Tradefolk Underground has been adjusted by 1.
Your faction standing with Knights of Truth has been adjusted by -1.
Your faction standing with Priests of Marr has been adjusted by -1.
You gain party experience!
You receive 1 gold from Guard Valon.

This quest can be done at dubious faction and higher. At threatening and KOS he returns the picks.

Once your faction is at a high enough level, you can do the Cutthroat Rings quest as well (a requirement for the Reserve Militia quest).

Did this with a level 1, level 4 and a level 9. No xp or coin but did get faction. Weird part? Once I was in a group with a level 60+. They got xp. The other times I was solo. No xp any of the 3 times for my char.

Weird no? Its like they broke the code if it had a level check?

I've killed Guards Valon and Colin a few times, I'd say less than a dozen times. They con as indifferent I think, but still agro on me. So how can I turn in the picks? Has anyone experienced this, or have any suggestions? Is there a different quest I should start out with, to remedy my faction?

Please help!

If you are conning them as indifferent, they shouldnt aggro at all. Are you sure you conned them, and not something that was standing near them that you couldn't see from where you were standing? The only cons that produce aggro are threateningly and ready to attack.

Heh, oh yeah. If you're a bard and are using something like chords of dissonance or a caster that has some kind of damage shield that hits anything that wanders near whether you attacked it directly or not then you will get aggro. Be sure you click any of these buffs off before you approach guards or other NPCs and if you're medding, make sure you aren't sitting in the path of a wandering NPC that might attack if he gets damaged by your buff.

Ping Fuzzlecutter usually has a bunch of picks also
# May 13 2002 at 6:18 AM Rating: Decent
He is in the tent in the southern end of the newbie area outside of the West Freeport gate. Newbs usually sell them to him, as they drop of the pawns that wander around this area. He was a little on the expensive side, I think the picks were around 2gp each. I was able to buy 28 or so off of him. THe best way to do this qeust for me being a level 16 cleric was to bind out by the Toll Booth in WC, and gate there when I was full of picks, my agility at the time was 10 so you can imagine how long it would have taken me to run there.

Also Boomba the Big once you can get by just inside the gate, or you can petiton a kind soul to clear out any picks he has for reimbersment plus a few coins so you can stay outside the gate. Just be careful you dont get ripped and consider that their faction will determine the cost so they have the negotiating power

# Jan 08 2002 at 7:31 PM Rating: Default
I gave 4 picks to Valon, and I got like 1 gold and faction, but never got the bag for the cutthroat rings.

All I get from him now is something about I'm wanted in Freeport and to "Stand Still Scum".

Ideas on how to get the bag?

# Sep 18 2001 at 12:24 AM Rating: Default
wolf form DOES raise faction with most npcs you have bad faction with but it raises it only "somewhat" not necessarily as much as you need. if your faction is something like "your faction cannot possibly get any worse" wolf form will not save you

i dont know where this "wolf Form" idea comes from.. but everytime i have ever used it to try to hand in DF Belts to the capt at the militia house .. he attacks me anyways. i asked around and others said they get attacked too... when i was in wolf form..i conned the guards...STILL waS KoS... <glares at you Threateningly> dont just assume that Wolf Form Solves ur Faction Status.. and btw..i JUST became KoS when helping kill slate in the EC tunnle..and i was not KoS before that..so i KNOW that im not past the point of No return for my Freeport faction Status. there has to be a way to raise FP militia status WITHOUT having to just go right into FP or up to a guard... so far i havent heard ANYTHING logical regarding how ti get someone that IS already KoS to a indifferetn faction at least... so far all this talk is for those who are NOT KoS... and just need higher faction to sell... hell id like to walk in the city and just not get attacked.. but i cant..

one thing does work if you havnt done anyting to hrut your faction with them, illusion human potion works well. the illusion potions as long as your deity doesnt conflict will get you into almost all cities in norath.

good luck questing.

p.s. i am iksar and cazic-thul diety. i can get into most cities with illusion. yes they are a bit pricey but well worth the cost for you can do other turn-ins after you are of the proper illusion.

Everyone is correct, you CAN raise your faction to the point where you can enter good cities w/ dark races, my friend had a 19 DE Necro and he had indifferent faction w/ the militia, an dubious w/ knights of truth, just to tell you you CAN raise faction.
Orc Pick Made Easy
# May 26 2001 at 12:01 PM Rating: Default
Ok I'm lvl40 pally that messed up some required factions. I found the best way to get orc picks is to go to the male merchant at Inn 1 in EC and buy them. If he won't sell to you then get a friend to buy them. I bought 40 at a time. Make sure you have SoW or else you won't be able to move if you carry as many as I did. Anyway, I turned mine into Tohsan Hallard at Hallard's Resales in EFP. I've never tried the Guard Valon way because I don't need Militia faction. Well, that's the fastest, cheapest way I know. BTW, it only cost me about 1gp 4cp per pick. I actually had some newbie trying to sell them to me for 2pp each.

Does the Tohsan Hallard dude raise faction with merchants? Or??????????
RE: Orc Pick Made Easy
# May 27 2001 at 12:22 PM Rating: Default
Well, I would like to make a slight correction to my post above. Over a 2 day period I got about 149 orc picks off that particular merchant. After that he stopped selling them and I haven't been able to get anymore. It's ok to me anyway because I had already gotten my faction pretty high. I guess the number you can buy is dependant upon his inventory. Sorry to all the people that miss out. This really is an easy way if you can catch him selling and with a big inventory.
RE: Orc Pick Made Easy
# Feb 20 2002 at 1:01 AM Rating: Default
He only had the orc picks because of the hundred picks that were sold to him by newbies that didn't want them. When all the picks that were sold to him ran out, he didn't have anymore to sell YOU. No merchant pops with orc picks in his or her inventory, ever. They are sold to them and they can stack up pretty quick with a bunch of newbs filling the merchants troughs.

Graverunner,
The Pally's Pally.

i got a 5 icsar necro and i got ported 2 ro and east fport. i cant sell a goddamm thing there and ill lose loads of money and time unless i can raise faction with freeport people up enough so they wont kill me and i can vend. HOW?

As an ogre, even a nice one, i had the same problem than yours.
There are two merchants in east commonlands that are trading with dark races...
One at the beginning of the zone (coming from west freeport) is Partar the blessed at the first inn you meet, with 4 guards around, and the second one is... well at other side of the zone... :)

My DE necro started out KOS but has now got up the massive step of being dubious hehe This is purely by sending my pet to kill the orc pawns whileim medding. Dont know how many i killed but i can walk in and around freeport its quite funny watching the looks on the pinkies faces!

Faction for Freeport?
# Oct 01 2000 at 9:37 AM Rating: Default
Hi I hope I get a response to this one. Does anybody know if there is a way for a 19th level iksar monk to raise faction with the knights of truth "and" the Freeport Militia. Have been looking for a way to do that. So far I have had no luck finding any mobs which are readily killable and in signifigant numbers to raise faction with freeport militia. It would be really nice to have a monks guild I could train at other than in cabilis. Please help!

Thanks Chirk (Iksar monk)

There is definitely a way to raise faction. My Iksar monk is dubious all the way up to ally with just about every good city on Antonica and Faydwer. It takes time though. For Freeport, I killed orcs from about 8th level to 14th, getting up to amiable with the Knights of Truth. I would loot as many DF belts as I could, and then turn them into the Militia (I had to beg for wolf form in order to do this). The DF belts to the militia raised their faction but lowered the KoT, so I had to keep killing orcs. This seesaw action ended up getting me to dubious with both the Knights of Truth and Freeport Militia. As I got older, I continued to hunt orcs now and then for good measure, and my knights of truth faction is up to amiable. So for all those evil races out there, it is possible, but be prepared to put in the work. But I tell you the truth, not having to take the boat back to Kunark to bank or train is great.

You could try getting your Highpass faction up by killing the Gnolls and Orcs then turn in the scalps for Freeport Militia faction. As for the Knights of Truth, just kill lots of Orcs in the commons or FP newbie areas. Should be quick kills at 19.
#Anonymous, Posted: Nov 23 2000 at 2:15 PM, Rating: Sub-Default, (Expand Post) Iksar can't raise their faction. If you start out KOS by a race you always will be KOS. You can't change that through Faction.

yeah that is completely incorrect, i've done it with 2 of my chars... gone from starting agro to non agro... I don't know where you got your info but you're way off
RE: Faction for Freeport?
# Nov 23 2000 at 2:26 PM Rating: Default
This is false. Starting out KOS to a race does NOT mean that you will always be KOS. There is, supposedly, a "point of no return", past which it is impossible to raise your faction back up, but that is not necessarily where you begin. I have seen an Ogre Warrior selling to merchants in North Qeynos. ALL Ogres, even Agnostics, are KOS to Qeynos guards when they are created, so this guy obviously killed lots of Gnolls or something. It's not easy, and it may not ALWAYS be possible, but it CAN be done. Otherwise, what's the point of faction? Just say I can go here and I can't go there and be done with it!

RE: Faction for Freeport?
# Feb 17 2002 at 7:38 PM Rating: Default
I can vouch for what this guy is saying, as at level 19 with a human necro I am amiable to virtually every single NPC in all of freeport. Turning in a ton of orc belts helped get me good with the Militia, and then with a friend's help I turned in about 8 militia helms to the Knights of Truth (Wolf form helps this a lot) and now everyone likes me. Whoot. =)
