Rain of Fear Information & Guides: An Overview | Group Progression & Task List | Raid Progression | Visible Armor

This is a solo task that begins with "a dying scout" (map) in the Valley of King Xorbb. She is located in the underground system at -1210, 415, -402. She's found in the main passageway (with the river flowing through the center) just southwest of the prison (which is the large circular room in the under ground system's southeastern area).

You say, 'Hail, a dying scout'

a dying scout says 'Who...? No. I must be hallucinating. I'm just... Seeing things. Why would a _____ be here? You can't be [real]. *sigh*'

You say, 'Of course I'm real'

a dying scout says 'Then maybe... I'm being given a second chance?... I was supposed to scout out the pit and learn what I could... but I've failed... This mission has cost me my life... But if I don't finish, it will cost more lives... Please! Will you [carry out] this mission in my place?'

You say, 'I'll carry out the mission!'

a dying scout says 'Thank you!... please, find out what's going on in the pit and report it to Dabbin, near the tunnel to the Gorge... and ask him... to look after my little 'lings, and tell them I love them...'

You have been assigned the task 'Plans Gone Awry'.

Before dying, a Halfling scout asked you to carry out her final mission. Find out what's going on inside the pit, and report to Dabbin Sneakfoot, who waits near the tunnel to the gorge.

  1. Try talking to one of the imprisoned Halflings 0/1 (Valley of King Xorbb)

Speak to one of the "a halfling prisoner" (map) mobs in any of the cells that surround the large circular room east of the dying scout's location.

You say, 'Hail, a halfling prisoner'

a halfling prisoner says 'How did you get in here? Have you come to [free] us?!'

You say, 'I can't free you...'

a halfling prisoner says 'What? Oh... I see. I'm sorry to hear that. *sigh* Well, if it's information you need, at least, I think I can help. But in exchange, please tell Dabbin about our plight. [Agreed]?'

    You say, 'Agreed!'

a halfling prisoner says 'Alright, it's a deal; we'll hold strong until help comes and help you all we can in the meantime. Now, the best person to give you information would be one of the Goblins which run this place - although I doubt if any of them would willingly comply with such a request - but, I've got an [idea] how we can get around that.'

    You say, 'What idea?'

a halfling prisoner says 'There's a Goblin, by the name of Grolak, who's nearly blind with old age. I've seen him mistake both Halflings and the undead monstrosities here for fellow Goblins! If you approach him pretending to be a Goblin, he may just fall for it.'

  2. Speak with Grolak the Ancient 0/1 (Valley of King Xorbb)

Grolak the Ancient (map) is found in one of the southeast prison cells (-1125, 75, -430).

You say, 'Hail, Grolak the Ancient'

Grolak the Ancient says 'Eh? What? Were you raised by werewolves or something?! Don't you know it's rude to address your elders in that hideous, "Common" tongue?! You kids today! I suppose next you'll all be skipping around dressed like Halflings! *sigh* Oh well. I suppose it's not all your fault; I'll yell at your parents later. Now - I take it you're my new apprentice, [yes]?'

    You say, 'Yes, of course'

Grolak the Ancient says 'Right then. Now, we'll need [lightning], some [minotaur parts], and something to bind the parts together. Hmm... [pondweed] should do! Naturally, as my apprentice, it's up to you to collect these - hah! I hope you're up to it.'

    You say, 'Lightning?'

Grolak the Ancient says 'I don't hold with these modern, lightning-free reanimation spells kids use nowadays. In MY day, we used to wait WEEKS for a good thunderstorm - and we were GRATEFUL when one arrived! *sigh* But we're short on thunderstorms here, so we'll have to make do with what we can steal from the dervishes in the valley. You can use this box to store the lightning from cloudburst whirlwinds or cyclones.'

    You receive "Empty Lightning Box".

    You say, 'Minotaur parts?'

Grolak the Ancient says 'Oh, just about anything will work. Preferably a few heads, though. Tough as rocks those things are - which is about how clever the beasts are, anyway. You'll find most of the lazy things in the valley above, grazing and fertilizing the fields. Just be sure to leave no witnesses! If they notice some of their herd is missing, we'll blame it on the Halflings.'

    You say, 'Pondweed?'

Grolak the Ancient says 'There's a lake near the waterfall in the valley. Just try not to drown yourself while gathering those plants,' he sniggers maliciously, 'After all, it'd be a waste of perfectly good weeds.'

This opens up the next five steps.

  3. Use your Empty Lightning Box to steal lightning from a cloudburst dervish 0/1 (Valley of King Xorbb)

Right-click the box on "a cloudburst whirlwind" or "a cloudburst cyclone" (these spawn in the forest area east of the zone-in).

  4. Loot 3 Minotaur Head 0/3 (Valley of King Xorbb)

  5. Loot 1 Minotaur Torso 0/1 (Valley of King Xorbb)

  6. Loot 3 Minotaur Limb 0/3 (Valley of King Xorbb)

  7. Gather 3 Wiry Pondweeds from the lake in the valley 0/3 (Valley of King Xorbb)

Wiry Pondweed is a ground spawn in the lake in the southeastern part of the zone (and at the bottom of the waterfall). There are many ground spawns.

  8. Report to Grolak the Ancient 0/1 (Valley of King Xorbb)

  9. Follow Grolak's instructions to assemble your golem 0/1 (Valley of King Xorbb)

Combine 3x minotaur head, 1x minotaur torso, 3x minotaur limb, and 3x pondweed inside the Runed Coffin.

  10. Deliver 1 Hollowflesh Golem to Grolak the Ancient 0/1 (Valley of King Xorbb)

Grolak the Ancient gives a few experimental tugs on the golem's limbs, 'Hmm... you're quite a natural! Most beginners try to bind the entire body the same way, and wind up with loosely joined limbs which fall off, or joints bound too tightly to move. There's good strength and flexibility in this one, though, so let's go to the [next step].'

  11. Listen to Grolak's instructions 0/1 (Valley of King Xorbb)

    You say, 'What next step?'

Grolak the Ancient says, in Goblin, 'I've set it up now, so pay close attention: I'm going to reanimate the golem and I'll need you to unleash that lightning on it at the right moment. Unfortunately, however, I'll be busy casting my spell, and won't be able to talk. You'll need to watch carefully for my signal, so let me know when you're [ready].'

    You say, 'Ready!'

  12. On Grolak’s signal use the Box of Captured Lightning on the golem 0/1 (Valley of King Xorbb)

    When Grolak emotes...

Grolak the Ancient glances in your direction, and nods his head violently: now!

...click the Charged Box of Lightning.

  13. Speak to Grolak 0/1 (Valley of King Xorbb)

You say, 'Hail, Grolak the Ancient'

Grolak the Ancient says, in Goblin, 'Hmm, not bad. Although you took forever with that lightning!' He glares accusingly at you, 'I'm sure you'll do better next time, won't you? Good. Now run along. I need to rest these old bones of mine, before I end up like our new friend here!'

  14. Report to Dabbin 0/1 (Valley of King Xorbb)

Dabbin Sneakfoot (map) is found just west of the zone-in.

Different prompts if Goblin language at max?

I was doing this task with three toons today. I got to the part of in the initial hail with Grolak the Ancient, and while my Iksar Monk and Wood Elf Druid were able to follow the prompts given in the main quest text here, my Halfling Druid was given a different set. The first two toons haven't trained their Goblin language at all, but my Halfling Druid Dyllwin has max skill (100) in Goblin. I noticed that Grolak was speaking to me in Goblin, so I switched to Goblin language and was able to continue. Note - I actually tried responding 'yes' to the initial text several times, getting the same response about speaking proper Goblin, before I switched languages and continued. I trimmed the text output below for space.

[Sun Feb 21 14:14:30 2021] You say, 'Hail, Grolak the Ancient'
[Sun Feb 21 14:14:30 2021] Grolak the Ancient says, in Goblin, 'Ahh, it warms my heart to hear the hoarse throat-clearings and strangled choking-sounds of my native tongue! So many young goblins these days insist on speaking that ghastly "Common" tongue. It all sounds like birds warbling, to me. Hmph! Now what is it you want? I suppose you're my new apprentice, [yes]?'
[Sun Feb 21 14:14:32 2021] You say, 'yes'
[Sun Feb 21 14:14:32 2021] Grolak the Ancient says, in Goblin, 'Eh? What? This isn't Rivervale, child. There's no need to run around babbling in that ghastly "Common" dialect, or whatever it is you're mangling. Speak proper Goblin, and don't waste my time with nonsense.'

[Sun Feb 21 14:15:44 2021] Grolak the Ancient regards you indifferently -- looks kind of dangerous. (Lvl: 100)

I just discovered that if you do it with more than one toon, you will have to wait till the previous golem has despawned.

I did it too fast and when I handed in the combined golem the previous one was still up. Then it despawned leaving me with no golem to use the lightning box on. I tried using previous trigger words from the quest but that didn't help. Seems you have to collect the bits again then.
Do steps in order

I had problems with the Hail part, but set /lan 15 and said started. He game the coffin and I did the combine. Then I looked at the quest and it had not updated for the hail. So I read the post and got the hail to function properly, got a new coffin, but I no longer have the items to put in it. Handing him the finished item just results in getting it back. So I guess I need to go collect another set of items and do the combine again.

We went back last night with empty inventory slots (which didn't help) but, we did finally figure out the trick!

After you gather your items and head back to Grolak - once you hail he will FD you - if you pay close attention to what he says - he asks you to "sit".

Sit out of the FD - then sit down - he will then give you the coffin. You will NOT get the coffin if youre standing up, FD or invised.

Watch out for roaming mobs in the courtyard of the jail.

Good hunting!
Still bugged

Tried this quest in a group - got to the part where you have to combine the parts for the golem.

No dice - we never received the Runed Coffin...

I did each toon separately from the hail of Grolak (had to /say Hail, %t, good info) to using the box of captured lightning on the golem and had no issue doing 2 toons successively.

* BUG AND ADDITIONAL INFORMATION NOTES *
  • Before starting, look outside the room and kill any lumbering skeletons that roam nearby, because once you hand in the Hollowflesh Golem doll, you lose invisibility vs. undead and they see through the door. There's nothing worse than getting ready to use the box and having 2 or 3 adds crash your party.
  • 2 people I know didn't have the golem appear, they petitioned and the GM said, "As this task is a "solo" task, this issue typically occurs if you are attempting the task in a group." Therefore, after doing the above step, disband from any group you are in for this duration.
  • Even with "/lang 15" to speak Goblin and everyone in group saw that I was, when I hailed Grolak using the default key of H, it wouldn't do it, it would only hail him in Common. I got around this by using a fake hail: "/say Hail, %T" while targeting Grolak, be seated.
  • I'm pretty sure the golem appeared shortly after [Next step] to Grolak and flopped to the ground in the middle, but I was boxing many toons, so it may have been after [Ready] also. In any event, if the golem does not appear, ensure that you are seated, not in a group, Grolak is targeted and you are speaking Goblin ("/lang" to show current language).
  • If you still can't get the golem to appear and you have others who can try, you can piggy-back onto their golem. Once they pop the golem and seated, targeting Grolak, and say "Ready" the golem will stand up, they target the golem and right-click their Box of Captured Lightning when Grolak tells them Now! The golem will stick around for about 30 seconds, so you can do the same sequence and get credit. It's how I got my bugged groupmates through that part.
