Tara Neklene may found on the upper level of the Academy of Arcane Sciences at -130, -915, reachable by walking over the glimmering circles in the floor of the main chamber. A find will not locate her because of the teleportation involved.

You say, 'Hail, Tara Neklene'

Tara Neklene says 'It is always a pleasure to meet a new face. We have many who travel far and wide to visit our great academy. Many who brave the long trip by boat. Many who dare to cross the territory of the [Deathfist orcs].'

You say, 'What are the Deathfist orcs?'

Tara Neklene says 'The Deathfist are a clan of orcs. They are not very powerful, yet I hear they dabble in the circles of magic. Their skills in the ways of magic are limited. It is my duty to study them. I shall pay for your services. Will you [assist with the research]?'

You say, 'I will assist with the research.'

Tara Neklene says 'Yes. You will do. Go into the lands which surround Freeport. There you shall encounter Deathfist apprentices. They are as young as yourself and each should carry an orc cantrip. Return one for further studies. Do so and you will earn your pay as well as our respect.'

Head to the orc camps in Commonlands and kill an "orc apprentice" to loot an Illegible Cantrip. Bring this back to Tara.

Tara Neklene says 'Very fine work, my young apprentice. This shall be very useful in understanding their ways. I have heard rumors of a scribe who can decipher these scrolls. He is said to frequent the local taverns. Bah!! If I cannot decipher them, no one can!! Continue with your work. Soon you shall advance enough to [test the might of the orc oracles].'

You receive 6 copper from Tara Neklene.
You receive 15 silver from Tara Neklene.

You receive a minor item.

You say, 'I will test the might of the orc oracles.'

At somewhere mid-amiable:

Tara Neklene says, 'You have heightened your knowledge to the appropriate rank. You are ready to challenge the Deathfist oracles. Do so and return one oracle scroll which any of them may have. If I am in a good mood when you return, you shall soon be summoning elementals.'

Hand in illegible scroll..

Tara Neklene says, 'Wonderful! You have survived the might of an oracle. With this we can now continue our experiments. Now you may continue your teaching and study the power to summon those of earth, air, water and fire.'

Your faction standing with Arcane Scientists has been adjusted by 15.
Your faction standing with Knights of Truth has been adjusted by 3.
Your faction standing with Opal Darkbriar has been adjusted by -2.
Your faction standing with The Freeport Militia has been adjusted by -2.
You gain experience!

I was camping the orce last night, and had colloected about 4 of the cantrips for my mage friend, and when I tried to loot the fifth, it said I already had one, and couldn't have two of this Lore item. Is it possible that some of them are still Lore items? Or was this a bug? none of the ones on me said Lore, but I didn't go back to the bank to see if the ones I already had said Lore. If some are still Lore, are they for a different quest?

Update: One of the ones in my vault was an Illegible Scroll. Looted from an orc ORACLE. Easy mistake to make, and probably why some people thoguht the cantrips were lore. Look the same, same first word in name, looted from same camps. Scroll is the second quest from same NPC in caster guild.

The 2nd quest tara Neklene gives is for Oracle scroll. You get exp & faction, then says she can't decipher but someone in one of the Inns can. This someone is Lozani who appears in Seafarers Roost between 11am and 1pm. Give Oracle scroll & 4gp for a random Shaman scroll. Give 2 cantrip scrolls for a random spell. I gave a scroll and got Feet Like Cat spell.

Tara asked me to bring her a scroll after I brought her the cantrip. I did and she gave me negligable experience and a fire elementalkin spell I couldn't use. Yay.
Heres why this is a good quest to do

First of all. All the Arcane Sciences quests are ill worth the effort to complete. Heres a tip from an old wizard, 54 at the time I am scribing this note.

First as you begin your jouneys there won't be much effort as to where you sell your loots and buy your goods. Doesn't make much of a difference till you start using skin shields and buying higher level spells.

Now, I know agates and bloodstones don't cost much and you'll hardly notice the effect on the pocketbook but by the time you start buying japers and peridots theres a HUGE difference. Peridots cost an average person about 14pp. By the time you hit amiable to AS your already ahead by purchasing them at 10.5pp Now, remember you don't buy one or two of these things your buying in BULK. Sometimes for clerics who likewise use them for symbols.

As for spells, loot and daily food and water this can be a great place to pick up batwings, cheaper spells, the whole lot. Who hates saving coin for something you really want? Not doing some of these quests is paramount to throwing money away in the long run.

Freeport is very central and easy to get to via Ro Gate/Portal. If your human you will find that this is the best and easiest city to get back and forth to and has the largest selection of goods available. I don't care what you need its probably there save some of the 39+ level spells and reagents for the planes.

The thing to watch here is the dreaded Freeport Militia faction as that can make your life miserable by preventing you from entering the city and our beloved AS. To avoid that you have few options but I was once KoS in Freeport myself and is easy but boring to fix. Inert potion can be your friend.

New quest not a change
# Dec 10 2000 at 3:19 AM Rating: Default
The oracle scroll is not a change to the quest, it's the new quest you sometimes get mentioned in the description. And before you get all excited it's a lvl 4 summon scroll you get as a reward, I gave it to a passing newbie.

You now only need turn in one illigible cantrip. The reward hasn't changed (loose change and a minor item) but now there is a second quest after this one...you have to get an oracle scroll from a Deathfist Oracle. I've not found one yet, but the reward seems to be an elemental summoning spell...the NPC text said, "We'll have you summoning elementals in no time."

The Quest also lowers your faction with the Freeport Militia =( But raises it with the Knights of Truth.

I have done this quest four times (camping at Orc 1 or 2 in EC) to take my high elf from indifferent to amiable to the Arcane Scientists. Other than that...

Yes waste of time!
# Jul 10 2000 at 9:24 AM Rating: Default
True it is a waste of time due to the little tiny smiden of exp and stupid items and the fact the cantips are lore! But they are A VERY COMMON drop for the last thread! go to orc 2 in ec and jsut take the orc apprentice..u can sell this canttip sometimes to lamo's hehe
Waste of time

This quest is a waste of time imo. I have only ever found 3 Orc Apprentices in the areas around Freeport and none of them have carried the Cantrips. I have even gone into the East/West Commons (cant remember which comes first) and had even less joy there. Forget this quest, stick to hunting stuff. Get xp and cash a helluva lot quicker.

they are in EC at orc 2 DUH!!!

The previous Anonymous is correct. The Apprentices are there.

If you really think this quest is worthless then read Lenaddar's message in this thread.

By the way, I got a cantrip off the very first Apprentice I killed.

One plea: don't rate a quest if you haven't completed it or especially if you really don't know anything about it.

This quest is not that kind of quest when you have to camp the mob for this item...You just hunt orcs at one of the orc camps and if u find a cantrip, u take it to Tara when you are back in Freeport. And nobody needs those cantrips. Most of them dont even know the quest. And the xp and the crappy item for no work is a fair reward.
#Anonymous, Posted: Jul 03 2000 at 3:49 PM, Rating: Sub-Default, (Expand Post) It is really not a useful quest. Sorry...
