Correction...I guess it's only those faction numbers for the initial quest. Repeats produce the 10, 10, 1, 1, 1

I am doing this quest right now on Ragefire server. So it still exists and works pretty much the same as the "classic" quest. However, run times are as follows:

    (With SOW) 2:29 minutes
    (No SOW) 3:21 minutes

At best speed you will be able to gain one whisker every 2:29 minutes, which means it will take a little over 45 minutes to get one stack of whiskers. Do the math for any other scenario.

For those claiming to run the quest satisfactorily in two hours, you couldn't have been a KOS class such as a DE Necro or an Iksar. It is impossible to complete this quest and raise faction for either of the classes I just named in 2 hours or less.

My experience is that 8 stacks will make a KOS DE Necro able to buy from merchants in Freeport, but not able to travel absolutely freely in East or West Freeport.

As of my report I don't know how many more stacks of whiskers it will take to allow me to freely roam East and West Freeport.

I just did this quest a number of times on my lvl 18 Enc High elf. Alos the one about the report from jonam at the same time (essentialy 2 faction improvements for the same run). I remember having trouble originally after he zone update, but this time I had no trouble if I came from the right side to Nestral and from behind the tent for the other rogue guy for the report. Maybe they stopped that ebil woman from roam a bit or permarooted her because she did not agro on me.
BTW - I went from some level of apprehensive to amiable in about 10 trips doing both quests at the same time. It took at least 30 more to hit kindly so they have reduced the faction effect at least once you are amiable.
Now I am jonesing to play and SOE has the netwok down because they got hacked. I am not going hrough wihdrawl...not me...

With the PoR expansion, Nestral moved to live with the SKs and Necros. Invisibility will get you there, but I doubt you can get the quest without agroing many mobs in the area.

Rebby is in a fairly safe place, a gully outside the Mage Guild in West Freeport.

This used to be one of the best quests to adjust Freeport factions, but now ...

If you're KOS to The Freeport Militia, I'd recommend having invis "on tap" for the duration of this quest. The only KOS mob you probably won't be able to avoid is Saxarivza Zaxun - a level 40 Dark Elf cleric with about 3khp who hits for a max of 85 and casts. She stands within aggro range of Nestral TGaza and Harkin Duskfoot. Killing her won't hurt any Freeport factions, you get the following hits for killing her:

Your faction standing with Priests of Innoruuk got worse.
Your faction standing with King Naythox Thex got worse.
Your faction standing with Priests of Marr got better.
Your faction standing with Clerics of Tunare got better.
Your faction standing with Priests of Life got better.
Your faction standing with Primordial Malice got better.

I began this quest being looked at threatening by all the npc's directly involved in these two quests, and built up some strategies over the course of it. I am a ranger, and used three abilities to complete these parallel quests that your character may not possess (but you can improvise with your own character to some degree). These include Sneak, innate camoflage (not necessary but useful), and the spell Harmony of Nature. However, this Is manageable with only sneak.

    Risk
First of all, none of the npcs you'll encounter, or have to pass, will see invis. The guards in WFP hit up to about 40 and weren't too dangerous when i screwed up, although the rogue guildmasters in EFP will hit up to 350, no doubt backstab and maybe assassinate. None run fast, summon, or cast, although all of them have high resists to snare and roots.

    First Step
Both Harkin Duskfoot and Nestral TGaza will give you first note when sneaking. However standing behind either mob will not work since both npcs have a second guildmaster beside them.

On Harkin's left is the tunnel leading west eventually to WFP. This tunnel stick out slightly, blocking his view of you. If you turn sneak on (making sure it was successful), you can inch your way along this wall towards him, continually hitting a hotkey of '/say what messages?' until he gives you the note. At which point he will turn towards you (but not see you due to the bump in the wall), and backing off is advised!

Nestral is much easier. For her you need to enter her room (invisible) and target her. Now leave and head back the way you came till you see Harkin infront of you. It is at this point that you can drop invis without either seeing you (too far from harkin, and a wall between you and Nestral), and raise sneak. /say I can go to Janam and Rebby's.

If you don't like this method, there are three others I have that work well. Firstly you can harmonise the surrounding npcs, and then sneak right behind either guildmaster. Another option is to pull the guildmaster to the zone, zone out, invis, come back, and sneak while he/she is moving back to their spot. Lastly, since the items are droppable, you could just have a friend who isn't kos to get the items for you!

I should mention though that no matter what, you will need to con indifferent for the final turn in.

    Second Step
The two npc's you will want to hand either note to are called Janam Rekish and Harkin Duskfoot. They both stand side by side, with a static character called peasant woman, and a wandering guard named Guard Inofus nearby. Personally the peasant woman looked at me amiably (one of the few in FP), though those who she is less fond of should harmonize her before attempting the hand in. Rooting her may also work. Then the task is simple to wait for Guard Inofus to leave, then sneak, drop invis, and give Janam and Harkin their respective notes. They return two items which are again droppable.

    Third Step
This is the most dangerous step as you need to be right by the mob to hand in the item. Dubious works for neither, and Indifferent is enough for both, I haven't checked Apprehensive.

Now you will have to sneak (unless you are a class that can charm/alliance/etc). One option will be to pull the guildmaster from their position, then zone/camp the agro, come back and sneak to the returning guildmaster. In many ways this is safer than the alternative, but takes longer.

The other option is to harmonize the guildmaster and the npc you're turning the item into, then sneak, then hand it in, and then get out before harmonize wears off.

I chose the latter which worked fine all but once. I failed sneak too often and my harmony wore off. So long as you're careful though, both methods work.

    Effect
I went from Threatening to Dubious to the rogue guildmasters in three trips, but stayed Dubious after my roughly next 20. I remained KOS to the Freeport Militia throughout.

This is a long and slow process to get friendly with the faction you're doing it for, though there are no negetive faction hits which therefore makes it a useful quest.

    Hope that all helped.

Best way : hand the whiskers to a close friend, switch characters, have thme hand them back.

Solo, but not as safe, way: find an out of the way, empty room, that nobody is likely to come into. Camp the character who is to recieve the whiskers in the room. Brind the character with the whiskers into the same room. Make sure the items are in bags, as they seem to disappear slower than items not in bags that are dropped/

Drop the bags of whiskers on the ground. and camp out. log the other character, and pick up the bags. You have a few minutes to do this, as I have gone LD while doing this, and rebooted my system, relogged, and the items were still there.

NOTE anyone can pick up your bags. do not do this in a location where others may find them. Also, NPCs will pick up dropped items. I still remember how funny it was hearing some guy in Kelethin complaining that someone had stolen his Skull shaped barbute, which he had dropped behind the bar in a tavern. The bartended had picked it up. Try dropping some piece of junk, like an orc pawn scalp on the ground near an npc. they will make some comment, and you'll get a message saying they picked up an abandoned item.

This quest raises Coalition of Tradefolk Underground (Freeport Rogues) and Coalition of Tradefolk (Freeport Merchants) by a large amount -- 10 points each. That means you can maximize these two factions after about 200 runs of this quest. But The Freeport Militia only goes up 1 point, and probably only 1 point as well for Carson McCabe and Corrupt Qeynos Guards.

My Iksar Shaman went from dubious to max ally with rogues and merchants, and from threatening to dubious with the militia by doing this quest 200 times (10 stacks of whiskers, boring work).

I could not complete the quest starting at dubious, and had to use a mule to get stacks of rebby's rat whiskers, then got wolf-form from a druid to temporarily raise me to apprehensive to turn in the whiskers.

    # Jan 16 2002 at 11:45 AM Rating: Excellent
I got tired of being apprehensive to the militia and found this quest and the note for Janam and the Frikniller Family. This is what I did.

First I found Falia in NFP and bound myself there and ran back to EFP and cast Camo (not liked by the evil guildmasters in the tunnels). Then I ran past the guildmasters and hugged the righthand wall till I found Harkin. Now at first I gave his guard the ale but later I skiped that part and just told harkin "What Message" and got his note for Janam. through the door and asked Gren "Who is your sister?", got his note. And out the door and up the ramp, through the door got Nestral's note "I can run to janam and rebby's.". Now gate to Falia, give her the note and get the artifact, run to zone with WFP, run to janam and rebby's at the theater of tranquility. Swap both notes with the proper guy and run to zone with EFP. back to the tunnels, give the returning objects and repeat.

I'm up to indiferent now and will continue until they like me.

    # Nov 01 2001 at 3:11 PM Rating: Default
No! You don't run through the tunnel. That would make the quest useless because of the length of time it would take. You zone directly from each zone to the other. It's a short run and Janam and Rebby's is near the West/East FP zone. Do both quests for a double faction boost. To get both faction boosts you have to turn in Rebby's rat whiskers to Nestral. In two nights work and as a DE I became ally with the merchants and a number of other NPCs and indifferent to the Militia however it did not change faction with the merchants in the Commons including North Ro. The only thing I know to up that faction is killing Orc Pawns by the zillions.
how long does it REALLY take
    # Sep 19 2001 at 12:03 AM Rating: Default
with plenty of practice i learned to do this quest in 2 min 25 sec (rebby and janam both)including zoning once and gating once. you really need to find the way thru the docks area and not run around past the west freeport gate to the tunnel which is much longer. yes i had sow too. the hard part is keeping it up at that pace for hours on end. helps to make a /afk hot key which you hit every time you zone :)and it goes without saying hotkeys for the things you have to say to harkin and nestrel ... this is a good quest for newbies to use to make money since they can sell the whiskers by the stack to high levels with more money than patience. no joke id do 200 plat a stack if i were a poor newbie but at this point in my career i wouldnt even do it for that. if i were kos i would pay that much though. im paying a few friends 100 per stack now to help me with this one. i only dont understand why i cant talk them into doing harkin since they are right there anyway. i guess when youve never been kos in a place you need to go you have no appreciation for faction.

I have a Iksar Shadow Knight, I have now turned in over 340 whiskers to Nestral TGaza. I am an ally to Rogue guild and still Threateningly to Guards. I have no clue how many this can take but am going to find out. Note: I have killed Reskin in EC a couple of times. So not sure how severly that damaged my faction. But I used to be Ready to Attack with guards. So I have seen it go up to Threateningly aroun 260 whiskers or there abouts.

I can now walk through east west and North Freeport, only avoiding the finger wigglers guild and the palidans. I did this by doing the Rebby quest and killing orcs till I was indiffrent to the E/W guards. Then I used wolf form to hand in belts to the leader of the warrior guild. The secret is not to buy the belts, and hunt for them, you see when you hand in the belts you gain with NFP guards but lose with E/WFPG. However, if you kill to get them you gain faction, so it sort of balances out. If you buy a bunch hand them in you will be KOS in E/Wfp and doubious in NFP.

I have done this quest repeatedly with a rogue mule to get faction for my iksar monk. I have given Nestral 180 whiskers total and here is what I have found.

The rogues are at ally but the guards are still at threateningly. I'm doing this in stacks of twenty whenever I get bored and haven't taken any other Militia faction hits so we shall see when I become non-KoS doing JUST this quest. Possibly at 200?

You will be at ally a long time with Coalition of Tradesfolk Illegal LONG before you see dubious with Freeport Militia AND Corrupt Qeynos guards as an Iksar *IF* you are relying soley on this quest.

Fix Militia with High Pass/High Keep (scalps and Goblin ears), and fix Corrupt Guards of Qeynos (beware this lowers Bloodsabers) by giving Guard Shilster (in NK, north of the wooden bridge) 5 Gold pieces at a time.

    G'luck =)

I have turned in roughly 160 of these whiskers, logged 14 hours with a mule, and am now Warm with the rogues, amiable to the merchants, and KOS to the guards. This is not the route to take to get into FP for all you hopeful iksar monks. Better luck starting off here and abandoning Cab early on if you want in.

Out of puzzlement, I did the note for Janam, only about 5 times, and was dubious to the guards, after this post. Perhaps one needs to use more than one quest to get the faction? BTW I am ally with merchants, and get better prices in FP than I do in Cab ) When all else fails, try something else.

    And safe hunting
