Rain of Fear Information & Guides: An Overview | Group Progression & Task List | Raid Progression | Visible Armor

This task is the third in a series of three. It is a solo task that begins with Thistlebrush (map) in the Valley of King Xorbb at location -1385, -970, 107 (a little ways north of the zone-in).

Pre-Requisites:
- Level 85
- Completed The Halfling Trail
- Completed We Have to Go Deeper

You say, 'Hail, Thistlebrush'

Thistlebrush says 'Your efforts have helped us much, especially Brantun and Barleyburr: when [they] were lost in the valley, and when they were in [danger] of being discovered after escaping the goblin chef. Thank you!'

Thistlebrush shakes his head and narrows his eyes. 'Lost again. We have not received a message from Brantun and Barleyburr for several nights. I fear they have fallen into graver [trouble] than they have before.'

You say, 'What trouble now?'

Thistlebrush says 'I sent forth my subterranean friends. They burrowed into this valley and scoured the tunnels for signs. They ferried to me the message that two of Xorbb's lieutenants have shown themselves: Sviir and Syrkl. This can only mean that matters important to them have arisen in the underground. They must have [discovered] Brantun and Barleyburr.'

You say, 'How were they discovered?'

Thistlebrush says 'Their perception must be infallible to see through the cloak of the rings. There is only one path for you to follow: Uncover the eyes. Stare into them and learn what they know -- if you can [withstand] their gaze. Only then will we find Brantun and Barleyburr.'

You say, 'I can withstand it'

Thistlebrush nods. 'I know you believe yourself strong, and I doubt not that you are. However, can you see the world clearly? Can you view all with unclouded eye? Can you cut down your foe with a mere look? If you can, perhaps you are ready to [face] the eyes of Xorbb.

You say, 'I will face them'

Thistlebrush says 'Speak then with Thoribald, Thorndig, and Threshrock. I sent them into the depths, and they have been tracking the eyes and searching for Brantun and Barleyburr. Unless you confront Xorbb's lieutenants, our hope will be lost beneath this valley.'

You have been assigned the task 'Escape From the Prison of Xorbb'.

Thistlebrush has once again lost contact with Brantun and Barleyburr. With King Xorbb's lieutenants alerted to the halflings' presence, it is likely that Brantun and Barleyburr have been captured or killed. Descend beneath the valley and investigate their fate.

Speak with Thoribald, one of Thistlebrush's messengers, to see if she has found any signs of Brantun and Barleyburr's presence.

Speak with Thoribald 0/1 (Valley of King Xorbb)

Thoribald (map) is a burynai found at /waypoint -486,+1272,-400.67 (middle of the westernmost stretch of the main passageways that the underground river runs through). He's on Find (Ctrl+F).

You say, 'Hail, Thoribald'

Thoribald wipes her paws and shuffles closer to you. Her voice is a gruff growl. 'This tunnel is dirtier than any burrow I've dug. Goblins are such filthy creatures! Most wouldn't notice amidst all the refuse, but I found bits of ham strewn along the canals and saw two crocodiles fighting over chunks. Brantun and Barleyburr must have come this way. Thorndig carried on further ahead. She might have found more signs.'

Speak with Thorndig 0/1 (Valley of King Xorbb)

Task Window Says: Thoribald found some of Barleyburr's ham, and she pointed you in the direction of Thorndig, who is on the trail of the two halflings.

Thorndig (map) is a burynai found at /waypoint -46,+488,-400.66 (from Thoribald, follow the main passageway north, then east).

You say, 'Hail, Thorndig'

Thorndig brushes dirt off the wall. 'See the scratchings? No, you wouldn't; your eyes are too big -- and would you even know our code? It is in Brantun's hand. He and Barleyburr are lost, crisscrossing the canals and looping back on their own paths. Even though they walk in invisible space, they feel a presence watching them, like a shadow creeping upon them as Ro falls below a ridge. They have begun marking their path along the walls and have quickened their pace, trying to outrun the sense of dread that is fast overtaking them. That is all I gleaned, aside from the arrow pointing the direction they next took. Threshrock has gone to investigate. She will know more.'

Speak with Threshrock 0/1 (Valley of King Xorbb)

Task Window Says: Brantun and Barleyburr were lost among the canals and feeling watched by a malevolent presence. Theshrock has ventured toward the halflings' last known location.

Threshrock (map) is a burynai found at /waypoint +489,+139,-400.66 (from Thorndig, head north).

You say, 'Hail, Threshrock'

Threshrock places a paw on her mouth and speaks in a whisper. 'Make no noise! It is close, the eye that pierces your spirit! Brantun wrote of it upon this wall. He and Barleyburr saw it looming around a corner. It looked directly at them, piercing through their cloak of invisibility. They felt their skin and eyes burn as it looked upon them without blinking. They ran when it began to float toward them, and hid themselves within this adjacent room. I know not what happened next, but I can feel a powerful presence of dread inhabiting the room, and I dare not look to see what is within. That I leave to someone braver than I!' Threshrock covers her eyes.

Confront Lord Sviir and discover what happened to Brantun and Barleyburr 0/1 (Valley of King Xorbb)

Task Window Says: Brantun and Barleyburr were cornered by one of Xorbb's lieutenants, who could see through their invisibility rings. Confront Lord Sviir and find out what became of Brantun and Barleyburr.

Lord Sviir (map) is found in the room behind Threshrock. Note: Hailing him will cause him to attack (after a small delay).

Have everyone in your group hail him before he attacks.

You say, 'Hail, Lord Sviir'

Lord Sviir's pupil dilates, and your consciousness flounders within that dark cistern. Into your thoughts a voice enters, as clear as an orator addressing a crowd. 'Do you know why you have come? You do not seek the halflings; you seek what King Xorbb holds: power. He controls the piece of a god, the root of power: fear. A mind powerful enough to control fear, to conquer it, can also wield it. With fear, one look will decimate a regiment more thoroughly than a valley bristling with swords, and will send your foes fleeing before you.

Lord Sviir says 'King Xorbb once knew fear. Chained by the goblins of Runnyeye, locked in the depths, he feared the dark. He feared the years upon years of sightlessness awaiting him, knowing that in time he would be blind, that though Ro may yet shine upon him, he would only ever know interminable darkness. Then the shard fell, tearing through the goblin bastion, streaming light and the burning wreckage of Runnyeye dominion into the gloaming of King Xorbb's cell. He conquered it: Claiming the shard of fear, he rose from the wreckage and laid waste to the remaining goblins before him. He conquered and made the valley anew.'

Lord Sviir's pupil begins to glow with a distant flame. 'And you ask of halflings when you know of such power? What has their race done that warrants such concern? Soon their home will be destroyed, along with any who defy the will of King Xorbb. Do you wish to stop such power or obtain it for yourself? To me it matters little, but be honest with yourself. Perhaps I should let you rot within the prison as I did those halflings. You will have plenty of time to reckon with your true self when you have sat in your cell as long as King Xorbb did.' The flame grows brighter in Sviir's pupil. 'But I see you are not amenable to such a suggestion. I warn you: I have been granted a taste of the King's power, as have his other lieutenants. Test your strength if you will.'

Defeat Lord Sviir 0/1 (Valley of King Xorbb)

Task Window Says: Sviir sent the halflings to prison, but he will not be as lenient toward you. Kill him.

Lord Sviir hits for a max ~30,000; is a belly caster (stand on top of him to land spells); single-target rampages; flurries; and casts "Stasis Gaze" on a random target every 20 seconds:

Stasis Gaze: Single Target, Magic (-950)
1: Decrease Movement by 10000%
3: Increase Curse Counter by 45
4: Decrease HP when cast by 40000

Lord Sviir has been slain by _____!

a lupine spirit materializes in front of you, and its figure shimmers and shifts, seeming to belong neither to this plane of existence or another. It looks at you and speaks. 'Greetings, _____, I am Lupex, Thistlebrush's guide, if you will. Leave this room, and we shall continue your journey.'

a lupine spirit says 'My nose tells me Branton and Barleyburr are Very Far to the SOUTH and EAST.'

Follow the lupine spirit on the trail of Brantun and Barleyburr's scent 0/1 (Valley of King Xorbb)

Task Window Says: Lupex has appeared to guide you to the prison where Brantun and Barleyburr are being held. Follow the wolf's directions.

This step will update automatically once you get to the prison location at /waypoint -766,+220,-512.66 in the next step. As you make your way there, the wolf will let off several emotes:

a lupine spirit says 'You know of the halflings and their plan to destroy the shard? And you now know Brantun and Barleyburr have been taken to the underground prison? Then you know as much as I. Thistlebrush has sent me to you, for my nose is keen. I can smell the paths of creatures both in this plane and in others. I can lead you to the halflings. Let us head south.'

a lupine spirit barks at you, motioning to its left. 'Do you know of the shard? Many say it is the piece of a god, one of many strewn about when his essence exploded into the sky. He was a god of fear, of darkness, of trembling. Merely a piece of this god has the power to bend reality, to alter and twist the minds of those who claim it and everything around them. Do you have the fortitude to draw near to something of such power? Do the halflings we now seek? Turn southeast.

a lupine spirit raises its head at sniffs the air of the tunnel on its left. 'I have traveled many strange lands and seen creatures and cities I could not have imagined. I have passed through the dark and light, through planes both mortal and immortal. I have seen the power this god holds over the mortal souls in this world. Without him they are maniacal and blithely suicidal; with him they are protected but enslaved in their own minds. Without even knowing the god's name, they sacrifice themselves upon its altar. That is true power. Can you confront something of this magnitude? Could you ever hope to destroy it, let alone control it? Go southeast.

a lupine spirit says 'Thistlebrush knows this, as do I. Brantun and Barleyburr, courageous as they are, have little hope of destroying the power this Xorbb wields. At best they could wrest it from Xorbb and place it under their own control. But what can honest-minded halflings attempt against the menacing hatred I feel emanating from Xorbb? If the halflings break under the strain of the shard or Xorbb's gaze, the task of grasping the shard will fall to you or me. Thistlebrush has attested to the strength of your will and purpose. He also knows my mind is not wholly of this world, not wholly bound by the powers of fear. We must act as necessary. Enter the room on the right: the prison. Brantun and Barleyburr should be held on a lower level.'

And upon reaching your destination:

a lupine spirit says 'We have found them, so for now my duty has been fulfilled. I will take my leave and walk the planes, though I will keep my eye upon all of you, watching for when the time comes. Farewell!'

Brantun and Barleyburr are being held in a cell; speak with Brantun 0/1 (Valley of King Xorbb)

Task Window Says: Follow the lupine spirit on the trail of Brantun and Barleyburr's scent.

Brantun and Barleyburr are now in prison. A lupine spirit spawns and will automatically follow you, giving you directions as you move along. It will lead you to around -790, 225, -513. This is the prison (large circular room) in the southeastern section of the underground area. They are in cells across from each other in a hallway that extends downward from the large undead-filled room.

Target Brantun and hail him.

You say, 'Hail, Brantun'

Brantun grabs his cell bars and hoists himself up to look upon you. His face is ashen and streaked with blood and dirt. '_____, you found us! I thought we would rot in here!' Brantun slumps to the floor. 'But we might as well. It stole the rings from us: that horrible eye that always lurked at the edge of our vision, watching us. When I close my eyes, I can still see it. Sleeping and waking here seem the same. Bones clack along the stones, sour death fills my nostrils, and the eye floats through the corridor, enters my cell, and burrows into my mind. I want to cloak myself with the ring and hide from the gaze of the eye, but it -- they call it Syrkl -- carries the rings on its tendrils, mocking their power. It also holds the key to our cells. But do not fight it yet! It controls and is empowered by the dead. Unless you can wield an evil eye's gaze against Syrkl's minions, you will have little chance of defeating it. So, we will likely die within this cell.' Brantun turns away from you and clenches his fist.

Speak with Barleyburr. 0/1 (Valley of King Xorbb)

You say, 'Hail, Barleyburr'

Barleyburr smiles at you, even though he, like Brantun, is pale and bleeding from the cuts on his face and scalp. 'Great to see you again, _____! I don't suppose you brought a bit of food, did you? The last ham you gave me was ruined by some bumbling goblins. They actually tried to throw me down that pit! It was quite a fall, but I had some of that ham stuffed in my britches, and it cushioned my landing. They confiscated it after they found me alive and threw me in here. By the way, how did you find us? Lupex? I haven't heard of him before, but Thistlebrush has plenty of creatures running around. It's hard to remember all their names! But I'm rambling now. It's just so good to see a familiar face here, to remind me that we still have some hope. Now all you have to do is get the key and our rings from that Syrkl creature, and our quest will continue. I know you can do it, _____!

Kill evil eyes and remove their lenses 0/15 (Valley of King Xorbb)

Task Window Says: Lord Syrkl, another one of Xorbb's lieutenants, controls the prison and has taken the rings from Brantun and Barleyburr. Before you can confront him, though, you must kill several evil eyes and take the lenses. Only with these will you be able to easily defeat the undead minions summoned by Lord Syrkl.

Vitreous Lens will only drop if you have this task. They drop 1-4 at a time off any evil eye mob in the zone.

Confront Lord Syrkl 0/1 (Valley of King Xorbb)

Lord Syrkl (map) is in the middle of the large circular room. He will go aggro soon after being hailed.

You say, 'Hail, Lord Syrkl'

Lord Syrkl catches you in the reflection of its eye. Your image begins to melt as Syrkl's voice enters your head. 'The halflings? King Xorbb has reserved for them a life of introspection. Their remaining years will be served here, so they may contemplate the hubris of slinking into his domain with power stolen from him, like a thief attending a lord's dinner party, bearing wine pilfered from the lord's own cellar.

Lord Syrkl says 'Do you know what King Xorbb has suffered to become that lord? Do you know how many years he spent in the depths underneath this valley? And vicious thieves like you and the halflings would return him to that prison and murder all his followers. I see you are deaf to my words of wisdom. You do not have the capacity for contemplation. There is only one fate for you.' Your image drowns within a cloud of red that billows across Syrkl's iris.'

He attacks.

Defeat Lord Syrkl 0/1 (Valley of King Xorbb)

Task Window Says: Kill Lord Syrkl to retrieve the prison key and the rings he stole from Brantun and Barleyburr.

Lord Syrkl hits for a max ~30,000; is a belly caster (stand on top of him to land spells); single-target rampages; and flurries.

At 80%, 50%, and 30% health, he spawns 3x a skullcluster (these hit for a max ~3,500). To kill these, you can use the Vitreous Lens or just DPS them normally. (You can also just ignore the adds and burn through Lord Syrkl, if you have the power to do so. His adds will despawn upon his death.)

During the fight, Lord Syrkl does an emote:

Lord Syrkl draws a charge from each of its subordinates and prepares to fire a blast.

This indicates he is five seconds away from casting Multiplicative Beam. The number of casts are determined by the how many skulls are alive.

Multiplicative Beam: Unknown(44) 15', Magic (-1050)
1: Decrease Hitpoints by 10000

As he lowers in health, he will also have a few more things to say:

Lord Syrkl says 'We were once weak, crushed under foot by Runnyeye. I too knew my own pains and tortures at their hands. But King Xorbb has made us strong. The power to control death is mine, and with this power I bring death to you.'

Lord Syrkl's eye narrows and burns with hatred. 'You wield the eyes of my brethren against me! There will be no leniency for you -- no pardon, no prison, not even a burial. These bones will pile atop yours, stripping your flesh and leaving you unrecognizable to everything you once loved or loved you. You will be erased from my sight!

Lord Syrkl's eye begins to twitch, leaking humor from a wide gash. 'My death will gain you nothing. I am but a servant, carrying out the will of the King. My strength is insignificant compared to his. Devour me if you can, like a predator its prey, but I will claw your eyes as you do. When you stagger blindly within the light of my master's fire, a mere thought will be all he needs to send a lance through your heart!

Lord Syrkl has been slain by _____!
You have recovered Brantun and Barleyburr's rings, as well as the key to their cells.

Upon his death, you receive 2x Recovered Multiphasic Ring and 1x Xorbb Prison Key (everyone in the group who is on this step receives these items).

Return to Brantun and Barleyburr 0/1 (Valley of King Xorbb)

Return to their prison cells.

You can now use the key taken from Lord Syrkl to unlock the doors of Brantun and Barleyburr's cells.

Speak with Barleyburr 0/1 (Valley of King Xorbb)

You say, 'Hail, Barleyburr'

Barleyburr leaps to his feet and claps you on the back. '_____, I knew you would come through for us!' Barleyburr takes his ring from you but frowns and stares at his palm. 'This might not help us much. Xorbb's lieutenants can see us when we wear it, and it gives me an awful feeling of dread when I put it on. But I suppose I don't have much choice, do I? It's better than walking about this place in plain sight. Again, thank you, _____. We will finish what we have begun, because of you. Brantun, are you ready? We have work to do!'

Speak with Brantun 0/1 (Valley of King Xorbb)

You say, 'Hail, Brantun'

Brantun clutches his ring tightly when you hand it to him. He looks past you as he speaks. 'There will be no forgiveness. Do you know what it is like to watch helplessly as your friend is thrown into a pit, or to be beaten half dead for days and nights -- or whatever passes for days and nights in this windowless prison? I feel no pity for Xorbb. That someone who suffered as he did can inflict such suffering on others is inexcusable. Wounded animals that lash out in agony should be destroyed, lest they destroy everything around them. We will deliver that destruction, no matter the cost. Halflings will not be mutilated by Xorbb's flailing attempts at vengeance. I will not be cowed by such a beast!' Brantun's brow darkens, and the hand clutching the ring begins to glow. 'Barleyburr, it is time. _____, tell Thistlebrush we are ready. Begin the assault upon Xorbb's troops, and we will penetrate the seat of his power and destroy it. The end is near.'

Tell Thistlebrush what transpired 0/1 (Valley of King Xorbb)

Task Window Says: Brantun and Barleyburr are going to make their move on King Xorbb's seat of power. Tell Thistlebrush it is time to begin the assault.

You say, 'Hail, Thistlebrush'

Thistlebrush looks to the sky, as though watching clouds gather overhead. 'Then the time is at hand. Truly, I thought you would find them dead. Lupex found them, you say? That name makes me shiver, for I do not know it. It is not a spirit or animal I have seen. But I have felt ill of ease lately -- and not solely because of our plight. I have felt a presence about me that I cannot shake, but I thought it only agitation. Guard your mind, for I do not know whether Xorbb's influence extends beyond this plane.' Thistlebrush looks you in the eye. 'Now, though, we must prepare for war. Speak with me when you are ready to execute the plan.'

You have succeeded in finding and rescuing Brantun and Barleyburr. Along the way you managed to defeat two of King Xorbb's lieutenants. Now Brantun and Barleyburr are approaching the heart of King Xorbb's power, the shard of fear. It is time to execute Thistlebrush's plan and engage King Xorbb's troops in battle.

Best location for eyes is in the King's room (green outline on map screenshot). Drop rate is 1 per person (had 2 guys in our group on the task and 1 eye dropped for each person every time eyes did drop).[img=286886]

If you are shrunk- because you are trying to be like a halfling as you go through this quest, when you get to the part where you have to hail the halflings In the jail cell? know that you have to hail then through the bars of the window in the door, so if you are shrunk, you will never be able to target them, I levved, then ran up the stairs to get lift and ran back and was able to hail them through the bars of the window but after like 20 min of wondering what I did wrong and clearing the prison circle twice and the halls underneath.

I did the fight at the entrance hallway after clearing the mobs inside the room. Lord Syrkl didn't hit me hard, and so my boxed chanter was blasting adds down quick when they popped. If you have any dps, just burn him down because the adds despawn after the mob dies. I found this out as I was killing them off and Syrkl died from a dot. Good luck!

Thanks, added to the quest that adds will despawn on his death.

When I did this task, I got 3 adds at 80%, 6 adds at 50%, and 9 adds at 30%.

I 4 boxed it with SHD, ENC, WIZ, CLR with CLR and tank merc. SHD and tank merc stayed on Lord Syrkl. ENC and WIZ used the lens to get rid of the adds. CLR helped heal tank merc.

I used Flevandoski approach to where to pull him. I pulled him right in to the 'entry' room and killed him there.

To farm these i set up at the quest mob Shimsham Ratlobber. There at a good amount of eyes to pull in this area. Also i'm assuming that the eyes drop 1 lens for every person in your group that has the task. I had 2 people and 2 dropped every time.

I never had to deal with the skullclusters as I used a Necro and Mage pet to kill Lord Syrkl. I was able to cast the mage AA Renlentless Servant and the necro cast Call Skeleton Throng to help kill the lord. They skullclusters spawned but never attacked.

It took me some time to figure these small hints out, I hope they will help you in killing Lord Syrkl:
1) Set camp in the room just before you enter the circular room.
2) If you can, place your campfire here too (you never know...)
3) Kill the two golems that are near the door (they always come together, and are normally level 100).
4) Hail Lord Syrkl and run back towards the door.
5) The Lord will summon you. Disc / protect / whatever yourself, but do not engage.
6) Pull the named half way towards the door. fight here.
7) If you fight near the spot where the lord is, he will soon drop to the pit, where your mercs or cleric cannot heal, and you lose (die, or start over).
8) DPS. bellycasting is very very dangerous.
9) The skulls are annoying. Pull them away fom your main tank (in my case a mage pet), otherwise it can get messy.
Good luck!
