Rain of Fear Information & Guides: An Overview | Group Progression & Task List | Raid Progression | Visible Armor

This group mission begins with Yioan in Beasts' Domain. This is an Alaran found at -620, 2755, 10 (due south of Kalda and Mea Treg who are in the zone's northwestern corner).

Pre-Requisites:
- Level 85
- Completed "Fun with Fungus"
- Completed "What a Mess"
- Completed "Forbidden Fruit"
- Completed "Searching for a Cure"
- Completed "Fear Not" (mission)

You say, 'Hail, Yioan'

Yioan says, in Alaran, 'We have discovered much about the effects of the fear fruit. Now I would ask you to go into the heart of the great tree and see if you can stop, or at least slow, the influence of the fear shard on Evantil. I have discovered that there is a beast guarding the shard. It is a nest, of sorts, infested with ants. This beast bathes in the power of the shard and its ants infest the tree and pollinate the fruit with fear. [Kill the nest] and the ants, if you can, and I am sure that the influence of fear will be reduced. If this is too dangerous for you, another [test] of the elixir would help me understand the [wretched] better.'

You say, 'Kill the nest?'

Yioan says, in Alaran, 'It is dangerous and you most certainly will need a lot of assistance. You have proven yourself brave already, so if this proves too dangerous, you should not feel obliged to assist us. But if you have enough allies to mount a true raid and are [willing], simply let me know. If you have only a smaller group, there is may be something you can do to [assist].'

You say, 'We will assist you'

Yioan says, in Alaran, 'I am pleased to hear this. When you and your allies are [ready] to go, tell me and I shall transport you to Evantil. Be wary, though. It may know of your presence and employ hearty defenses to prevent your entry.'

You have been assigned the task 'Evantil: Heart of the Oak'.

In order to reduce the effect of the fear shard on the great oak, you have been asked to destroy the beast that houses the ants at the heart of the oak. Those ants are the key to the 'pollination' of the fruit with the power of fear.

Getting past the defenses into the tree will require defeating the molars. Yioan reminded you that trees generally do not like fire.

You say, 'Ready!'

LOADING, PLEASE WAIT...
You have entered Evantil - The Vile Oak.

Destroy the Nest Protector and the aggressive ants in the Heart of the Oak 0/1 (Evantil, the Vile Oak)

Part 1: The Molars

Run up the ramp and into the tree to trigger the event. (Whoever triggers it will be ported to the zone-in, but can run back.)

The tree seems to come to life with a great exhalation. Embers spring to life in old campfires as leaves swirl around your feet.

At the top of the ramp leading into the tree are two treants: "Molar" and "Impacted Molar". You need to kill the two treants while also killing the adds that spawn. The Molars each hit for a max ~18,000; are permanently rooted; do not summon; and are only susceptible to melee damage and fire-based nukes/DOTs.

As long as the Molars are alive, adds will be spawning and auto-aggro'ing your group (these adds have cross-zone aggro and will seek you out wherever you may be). You'll get one add every 60-90 seconds. Adds hit for a max ~12,500.

To help deal with the adds and the Molars, you can get a fire damage proc by running over one of the two campfires across the canyon. The buff is called "Up In Flames", but also has a DOT component to it. This buff is not necessary if you have enough DPS on your own.

Up In Flames: Single Target, Unresistable (0) (90 seconds)
1: Decrease Hitpoints by 4000 per tick
4: Add Proc: Touch of Flame rate mod 150

Note that if you try to pass the Molars while they are still alive (or any adds are still alive), you will be ported to the zone-in:

A great gust of moldy wind flings you from the heights.

You can melee the Molars without being kicked away, but have to stay in front of them.

In addition to the Molars and adds, you will also have oozes called "a drop of sap" spawning in the area. These are non-aggro and not killable, and have an aura around them, so you will want to avoid stepping in them:

Sapping Strength: Single Target, Unresistable (0) (3 ticks)
1: Decrease Spell Haste by 50%
2: Limit: Combat Skills Not Allowed
3: Decrease Movement by 80%
4: Inhibit Melee Attacks by (50%)

If the Molars are left idle, you'll get emotes warning of a reset:

The molars blocking the entrance to the great tree grow strong as they stand idle.

A creaking sounds preceeds a great, warm wind. All of your efforts are swept away and things return to normal within the great oak.

Once the Molars and all adds are dead, you can move up into the tree.

Impacted Molar has been slain by _____!
Molar has been slain by _____!
The unnerving breathing from the great tree stops. Things become eerily quiet.

Part 2: The Nest Protector

The main encounter here, "Nest Protector" spawns on the second floor of the tree (see this image for The Ant Queen -- the Nest Protector is found in the larger of the two rooms on the tree's second floor).

Along the way to this location, you'll see numerous ants ("an ant soldier"). These don't see invisibility and don't factor into the task's progression, so you can invis past them if you want. You can also clear them as they don't have many hitpoints and don't hit too hard (~7,000). Don't pull them from a distance, however, as they will sometimes warp around. If they aggro the Nest Protector and you are not there to engage it, the task will reset to the beginning.

In the group mission, the Nest Protector has a standard aggro range, so you can set up and prepare just outside its room.

The Nest Protector hits for a max ~16,000 and single-target rampages. It casts:

Forceful Explosion: PB AE 35', Magic (-800)
1: Decrease Hitpoints by 20000

Life Harvest: Single Target, Poison (-950)
1: Decrease Hitpoints by 34000

It spawns adds (1x "an aggressive ant" at a time: mezzable; stunnable; hits for a max ~10,000). You will get one add on engage and more adds as the fight goes on. It's not confirmed whether these adds are timed or if they are based on the health of the Nest Protector, but as few as 10 adds and as many as 12 (in total) have been reported, so they may be timed. If they are timed, they appear at a rate of one every 10-15 seconds (perhaps up to a maximum number of spawns alive at once). These adds have a fair amount of hitpoints, so crowd control appears to be the best option, rather than killing them as they spawn.

Oozes occasionally spawn, with the aura "Sappy Slime":

Sappy Slime: Single Target, Unresistable (0)
1: Decrease CHA by 40
3: Decrease Movement by 40%

There is an aura that circles the perimeter of the room, "a spore cloud". If you get caught in it, you get the debuff "Pollination" which leads to "Explosive Sneeze":

Pollination: Single Target, Poison (-800)
1: Decrease Hitpoints by 1500 per tick (4 ticks)
2: Increase Disease Counter by 50
3: Trigger Effect: Explosive Sneeze on Fade (knockback + nuke for 17,500 hp)

Around the room are five flower mobs called "a mantrap". These will target random players and pull them to their location, inflicting them with "Flowery Grasp" (holds them in position and an indefinite silence). In order to free the player, that particular mantrap needs to be killed (mantraps have relatively few hitpoints). Note that these instantly respawn.

Flowery Grasp: Single Target, Unresistable (-10000)
1: Slow Push (-300)
2: Decrease Hitpoints by 5000 per tick
3: Amnesia (Silence vs Melee Effect)
4: Silence

Kill the Nest Protector and all aggressive ants to update this task step. Note: The task locks upon the death of the last ant or the Nest Protector (whichever is killed last).

About Wipeouts & Resets

If you wipe out on the Molar phase, you will need to drop the task and get a new one (the auto-aggro adds keep spawning even after Molars reset, effectively preventing in-zone CR).

If you wipe out while the Nest Protector is still alive, you will have to repeat the entire task (including the Molars).

If you wipe out after the Nest Protector is dead, but aggressive ants are still alive, the event does NOT reset (they simply keep leashing themselves to the room). You can CR and move in to kill the ants after rezzing and rebuffing.

Speak with Yioan 0/1 (Evantil, the Vile Oak)

For all your effort, you get a simple "well done":

You say, 'Hail, Yioan'

Yioan says, in Alaran, 'Well done! Thank you for your assistance.'

This quest has become fairly easy now just to zerg both phases however for those having trouble or working on the achievements, here is the best strat.

Phase 1 - The Molars
Set your group up on the ledge due south of the tree. There is a crack that parts two sides of this ledge and later a campfire will spawn on both halves. Next someone run up the ramp and into the tree. They will be flung to the entrance taking no damage. Now someone who can take a hit (or with divine aura) run back up the ramp to start the event, before running back down to join your group.

Molar and Impacted Molar do not summon at any %, are permarooted and are belly casters (if you have to be in melee range to damage them). Every 30 seconds or so a mob will spawn around the base of the ramp and charge a random member of your party. Pathing is awful so they will take a while to reach them. The tank uses the height advantage to tag the mob, then stands still to avoid the pathing problems. After a few seconds the mob warps onto the ledge. The tank positions the mob on the campfire and the group DPSes it to about 60%. The mob must be as close as possible to the middle of the fire to get the debuff and you will see it appear in the mob's buff window. Once the mob's health is roughly 60% and has this debuff, it will drop agro and charge the two Molars. Simply rinse and repeat.

Periodically a campfire will despawn due to having a limited number of charges, so you will then switch. After a few minutes the campfires respawn. You can continue in this manner without the Molars ever despawning or the event resetting. You do not need to hold additional agro or dps on the Molars. I believe at most 3 adds will spawn at a time so crowd control is an option if your dps is lacking, though this will be unlikely as their HPs are pretty low.

While I haven't tried continuing this method for the entirety of the fight, presumably you can continue and kill the Molars without ever DPSing them directly. If like me you get bored by this, then have your melee get the debuff from the campfire before your group charges up the ramp. While the spell description says this is a 500dd proc, the Molars seem to be particularly susceptible to it and die much faster when your melee has it. The Molars are much tougher than standard mobs, have lots more hit-points and will continue to spawn these adds.

Kill any remaining adds, invis and go upstairs.

Phase 2 - The Nest Protector
Carefully progress to the corridor leading to the next stage, being careful not to trigger early. Kill the ants at the end of the room with a corridor that extends up to the event room. Kill the two ant adds that path this corridor. This will prevent this unnecessary trash from assisting during the event.

The Nest Protector has a ton of hit-points. I recommend killing adds as they spawn rather than attempting a straight burn. I believe the adds spawn at every 10%. If attempting the Sneeze Guard achievement by avoiding the aura, then keep as few people melee DPSing as possible to avoid mistakes. The Aura mob is a pain as it paths around the room and occasionally straight through the middle, making it hard to avoid. We kept our caster boxes outside the room with just pets and two real player in the room.

Tried it a couple more times.

Are we determined or stupid?

There are some tricks to the fires - stand by the edge of the cliff and dot the mobs as soon as they pop up in the target window.

When dotted they run/warp up to the fires quicker if you have the dps, that way you don't have to run back and forth to the fires as many times and risk falling in the crack.

Ranger was murdered because of the grasping flower...

Enchanter got stuck as well so, tank got overwhelmed with adds and died.

Of course the mission RESET - why? Did we not prove we can kill the stupid Molar trees - yes! Then why do we have to do it over and over and over and over again for a shot at the Nest Protector?

It just doesn't make any sense.

This mission sucks the big one!

We have tried this mission 7 or 8 times and still haven't beaten it yet - 105 SK, 105 Ranger, 105 Chanter with a couple of mercs.

The pathing of the mobs sucks - they take forever to get to the campfire - then pop up anywhere - usually on the healer merc.

The placement of the fires are right by the cliff - sucky placement - one slip, you fall off and you're screwed - since you can't get back to the camp before you have 5 mobs on you.

Got the molars down only once - ran up to the Nest Protector - touched an ant - Nest Protector aggo'ed - quest reset.

Spend 30 min without getting any xp (you don't kill the mobs) only to have the quest reset - awesome!

Why? What's the purpose of the reset? Extra special loot or gear?

It just doesn't make any sense on why it is made so touchy - especially for stuff that we don't have control over - can we place the ant closer to the Nest Protector?

Why not make all the ants going up the tree SI mobs? Maybe make the ants swarm you - if you look at one cross-eyed!

If you want to have it reset - make the fires more accessible - not near the cliffs OR let you get the molars down and NOT reset for the Nest Protector.

I hate to complain, hate it because I love this game. However, I can't even imagine this quest 5 levels lower.

Been playing this SK for over 7 years and I have never seen a quest this... moronic.

We are so frustrated.

7 years later and the mission is still complete trash. Reset for no reason whatsoever then had to fight the molars again which take half a gd hour with endless adds.

TANK: PAL, HEALS: CLR, SLOWS:SHM, DPS:WIZ, MEZ:BRD

just did w/ pickup group. SHM was boxed. I thought this was easy. Start event, sick nukers/dotters on molars on top of tree ramp; tag adds that agro zone wide every ~90sec or so. Rince/repeat till molars croak.

Med up

Clear up tree to boss location and take short break. Once rebuffed, kill boss, but focus on adds when they pop. THey will spawn at least 1 at a time, but no more than 3. They hit <1-4k, boss hits around 14k max. Have hotkey ready made by groupies if/when they get mantrapped into the weeds (free them). Avoid the goos or else youre snared. As long as agro remains on tanks, and theyre getting heals, and dps is fast enough (not a dps heavy fight at all), this is easy. You can mez adds, up to you, i'd rather not leave that up to chance when you have the chance of wasting 5 other peoples hour and lose some reputation/credibility fast. You can /taskadd up to the last ants' or boss' death.

Good luck!

Don't do the campfire thing

That campfire strategy is ... interesting, but seeing as the molars don't summon, you know what to do.
Worst Mission Ever
# Aug 25 2013 at 11:13 PM Rating: Decent
This mission SUCKS...minimum of at least 30 attempts and fails.

Posting war stories dont help others get through missions. Any advice on classes and how and what to do to beat the 2nd phase would be great help. having no problems on named trees, just cannot beat Nest Protector. Mantraps are buggy as all heck fyi. Sometimes thay summon and trap you and when your broke out, your ported under the world. Or they summon you and it doesnt trap you it just ports you around inside the room. Petitioned them but GM's say is working just fine.

If you don't have the DPS/tankage/healing to kill Molars/initial adds, it's possible to kill the molars without having to attack them directly:

You'll need one person up top keeping the Molars agro (preferably someone who can FD/FM), while the rest of the group sits next to one of the fires at the bottom of the ramp.

The people at the fire knock trash mobs down below 65% then drag them over the fire so that they get hit by the fire proc debuff. After a few seconds, trash that have the fire debuff from the camp-fire will charge at the molars and explode for 2-3% damage each (on both molars). Eventually you may need to drag mobs to another fire when the first one runs out (the fires dot 10-15 targets total before going out).

Nest Defender adds:
They seem to be % based spawns, so you should be able to kill them before spawning more. They generally spawn one or two at a time, every 5-10%? I haven't been able to keep track so far.
Crappy Mission
# Dec 29 2012 at 8:41 PM Rating: Good
After 7+ hours, countless attempts and various group set-ups, we finally beat this **** of a mission though in the end it almost got us - again. Make sure you have enough DPS to burn end mob down to avoid all the Traps, forget to keep Adds mezzed except for the purpose to buy yourself time for the Burn. WAR SHM NEC WIZ botted CLR and Alt BRD slapped main mob down, but at 2% the damn KB that goes off whenever the DoT is either cured or timer runs out prevented heals and WAR died, then the rest quickly followed, yet not before main guy was down.

One person resided in the instanced, and aggressive ants don't see invis and are tethered to the room like the Nest Defender. We rezzed, rebuffed and slaughtered the 12 agressive ants who had been amassing due to our burn.

Dropped 1x Fear Infused Charcoal and 1x Greater Dreadmote.

I am freakin' beaten, but this mission is as well. NEVER to be done again as far as it concerns me. If anyone beat this yet on Tunare, add Grey Horizon to the list. We definitly earned that the hard way.
