Rain of Fear Information & Guides: An Overview | Group Progression & Task List | Raid Progression | Visible Armor

This task is the first in a series of three and begins with Foreman Sukar (map) at the zone-in of the Breeding Grounds (-20, 0, 4).

Pre-Requisites:
- Level 85
- No tasks

You say, 'Hail, Foreman Sukar'

Foreman Sukar greets you with a troubled smile, 'I am Sukar, leader of many brave [workers] who are trained in the careful extraction and preservation of dragon artifacts. Excavation crews have long been present in Dragon Necropolis, eager to uncover bones or other relics that might make their finder wealthy, but my crew is quite different. We are more concerned about what can be [learned] from the bones and relics that are found.

You say, 'What can be learned?'

Foreman Sukar says 'We have always done our best to avoid disrupting the dragon [death ritual]. We remove artifacts with care, and when able, return them to their original resting place once our [studies] are complete. The recent discovery of the [Breeding Grounds] has given my crew and poachers alike something to get excited about.'

You say, 'What death ritual?'

Foreman Sukar says 'Despite their reputation for being beasts of destruction, dragons are quite refined creatures with a very structured society. They persevere even in the face of extinction, often outliving countless other creatures that also call Norrath home. For such long and grand lives, it seems fitting that these creatures would meet death with dignity. Dragons from all over Norrath make their way to the necropolis when the end is near, allowing their bones to rest peacefully among their ancestors.'

You say, 'Tell me about the breeding grounds'

Foreman Sukar gestures to the area around him, 'It wasn't until recently that this area was discovered. As shards of fear rained down upon Norrath, one large chunk of crystal tore through the tundra within the Western Wastes, pierced through the heart of Dragon Necropolis, and eventually lodged itself into the core of what we now call the Breeding Grounds. This name was not given by its inhabitants though, but by those who have come here and witnessed the miraculous arrival of a [new breed] of dragons.

You say, 'What new breed?'

Foreman Sukar says 'We don't know much about the dragons that dwell in this area, but the more we explore and study, the more we begin to understand. It is evident that the fear crystal that lodged itself into the cavern floor is having an effect on the dragons that dwell here. Some of their scales have a unique purple hue, and they appear to mature at an accelerated rated. My studies have come to an unsettling halt though, as my [excavation crew] has disappeared.'

You say, 'What about these studies?'

Foreman Sukar flashes a modest grin, 'Our research would not be possible without the generosity of Mr. Napth. Not only is he a charitable benefactor, but the philanthropist genuinely seems interested in our findings. While his curiosity leans more toward crystals clusters than the dragons, it's still refreshing to know that our research is being funded by someone who believes in the cause.

You say, 'And your workers?'

Foreman Sukar says 'I run a diverse team, made up of individuals trained in the extraction and preservation of dragon bones, relics, and other artifacts. My crewmembers have all been instructed not to disturb the native inhabitants in any way. We strive to maintain a non-threatening presence, devoting our efforts to learning and observing, rather than looting and killing. We haven't had too many issues with the dragons here, as we've always kept a safe distance, but they are growing increasingly hostile. I worry for my crewmembers' safety, and have yet to find an adventurer willing to [help] me find them.'

You say, 'I will help'

Foreman Sukar says 'Many thanks, _____. I trust that you will be able to locate my crew and help them return to me safely. Their last known excursion was to the frozen area which rests beneath where we stand now. They were sent to collect egg shells from recent hatchlings, but have not been heard from for days.'

You have been assigned the task 'A Chilling Rescue'.

Sukar's excavation crew has gone missing. He's asked for your help in locating them.

Find the missing excavation crew 0/1 (The Breeding Grounds)

This updates at around 180, -30, -150 (map -- this is in the ice area that's underneath the zone-in, so you'll have to travel through the eastern tunnel system to get there). There are no markings on the ground; you just have to run over the location (due west out of the tunnel into the ice cavern).

Beneath the thick layer of ice lie the frozen remains of Sukar's crew, though one survivor can be seen trapped beneath the frozen barrier.

Return to Foreman Sukar 0/1 (The Breeding Grounds)

Task Window Says: While Sukar will be saddened to hear of his crew's frozen fate, he will be happy to hear there is a survivor.

You say, 'Hail, Foreman Sukar'

Foreman Sukar drops his gaze to the floor as a heavy sigh escapes his lips. 'I am crippled by the loss of my crewmembers, but an effort must be made to rescue the sole survivor. The ice is too thick to crack, and likely won't melt by any normal means. A flame ignited by lava and fueled by phase venom should be enough to turn the ice to water. I am in no shape to collect the needed items on my own. Please, I beg you, gather the materials and return to me so that we can rescue my crewmember before it's too late.'

Recover a brittle patch of rat fur 0/1 (The Breeding Grounds)

Recover a dragon claw 0/1 (The Breeding Grounds)

Recover a phase spider venom sac 0/1 (The Breeding Grounds)

Task Window Says: Sukar has asked you to collect some materials to build a torch. Brittle rat fur can be found on any Chetari. A dragon claw could be found in piles of dragon bones. A venom sac can be found on phase spiders.

These are random updates from chetari kills (tunnels to the east of the zone-in); piles of dragon bones kills (map -- objects scattered throughout the side rooms in the Chetari tunnels); and phase spider kills (found in northernmost part of the zone).

Return to Foreman Sukar 0/1 (The Breeding Grounds)

Task Window Says: Now that you have all the required items, Sukar should be able to fashion a torch that is capable of melting the thick ice.

You say, 'Hail, Foreman Sukar'

Foreman Sukar takes the items from you and begins to wind the brittle hair around the larger end of the dragon claw. After forming a tight ball at its tip, he coats it generously with phase spider venom. With a quick but careful hand, he places the complete Dragon Claw Torch in your grasp. 'Carrying this torch as you walk across an active volcano should be enough to ignite it. As soon as it's lit, make your way to the ice patch where my crewmember is trapped. Touch the torch to the ice and step back, as the flames will flicker high.'

You receive a "Dragonclaw Torch".

Run over an active volcano to light the Dragonclaw Torch 0/1 (The Breeding Grounds)

Task Window Says: In order to light the torch, you'll need to quickly run over an active volcano.

With the Dragonclaw Torch on you, run over any of the "volcanoes" in the lava areas of the zone (there a few locations near the zone-in). Note: This update breaks invisibility.

The Dragonclaw Torch ignites into a blinding flame as you walk over the active volcano.

Use the Dragonclaw Torch while on the ice patch 0/1 (The Breeding Grounds)

Task Window Says: Now that the torch is lit, head to the ice patch where the halfling was trapped and attempt to melt the ice.

Go back to the excavation crew update location and right-click the torch there.

In a bizarre reaction, the frozen pond ignites when the torch's flames lick its cool exterior, causing the ice to melt and the halfling excavator to escape.

Return to Foreman Sukar 0/1 (The Breeding Grounds)

Task Window Says: Inform Sukar that the trapped excavator has been freed.

You say, 'Hail, Foreman Sukar'

Foreman Sukar greets your arrival with somber gratitude. 'I cannot dwell on the dead, but instead must be grateful that you were able to save a life. I have sent the one you rescued back to Shard's Landing to rest and recuperate. Someone should notify his mother, Haela, of his rescue since he won't be back in the Thicket for some time. The tale of his icy entrapment is one you may be [interested] in hearing, however.

You helped rescue one of Sukar's missing crewmembers.

His reference to Misty Thicket involves the task "The Long Lost Puppet", and "interested" leads in to the next task in this series.

This is soloable (with tank merc) by a druid. Chetari do not summon, and can be root totted in the eastern tunnels. The dragon skeletons can be dotted, nuked etc safely and have the added benefit of counting for the Trade skill impressions quest. The phase spiders are the difficult part since they cant be snared or rooted...tanking seemes to be required

I snared off a few of the fear drakes near the entrance to the spider tunnel, drug the drakes into the room a bit and dumped agro. This gave me enough room (and barely time) to pull and merc tank a spider.

Btw, the smaller fear drakes can be quad kited around that room, just have to avoid agroing the senior drakes, who once again cannot be snared.
