Rain of Fear Information & Guides: An Overview | Group Progression & Task List | Raid Progression | Visible Armor

This solo task begins with Engineer Eilisia (map) in Shard's Landing. She is located in one of the tents in the crater's southwest section.

    Pre-Requisites:
    - Level 85
    - Completed "Welcome to Shard's Landing"
    - Completed "Words of the Unspoken"

    You say, 'Hail, Engineer Eilisia'

Engineer Eilisia says 'Well, well, if it isn't the famed _____ I have heard so much about. Really making a name for yourself in our ranks, _____. Today just happens to be your lucky day. I'm in need of assistance with a data gathering project and you are just fit enough for the job. Let me know if you are [interested] in assisting me.' The gnome looks back down at her notes after what you think was a quick wink in your direction.'

    You say, 'I'm interested'

Engineer Eilisia says 'Perfect, a _____ like you should have no problem completing this task.' She begins to detail a list of tools you will need to acquire and specific sample types she wants you to obtain...'

You have been assigned the task 'Unusual Goral Coral'.

Engineer Eilisia is spearheading an initiative to study the nature of the Heart of Fear and she needs your help.

You will need a specialized tool to collect a fear crystal sample from the coral that grows in the pond at Corruption's End. Search the barrels and boxes around our camp to find a Mineral Extractor.

One of our envoys was recently sent out with a shipment of various chemical filters. Find out what's become of him and ask for a Simple Chemical Filter. The envoy was last seen heading northeast to scout out the pack of grendlaens that live in Worntooth's Run. You will need this to properly obtain a water sample from Corruption's End.

Magus Burlshin has a number of 'interesting' items. Go speak to him and see if he is willing to part with something capable of melting flesh but preserving stone.

Locate a Mineral Extractor from the supply holds in our camp 0/1 (Shard's Landing)

Supply barrels and supply boxes are found in the tents in the Harbinger's camp. /open those until you receive the Extractor.

You rummage through the box's contents but fail to find a Mineral Extractor. Perhaps one of the other containers will have it.

You have already checked this box. You may have more luck finding a Mineral Extractor if you check in one of the other containers.

You rummage through the barrel's contents but fail to find a Mineral Extractor. Perhaps one of the other containers will have it.

You reach into the barrel and uncover a Mineral Extractor!

Obtain a Simple Chemical Filter from one of our envoys 0/1 (Shard's Landing)

"envoy`s supply box" (map) is located at 1815, -500, 7 (northeast of the crater just over a hill in Worntooth's Run). /open it to receive a "Simple Chemical Filter".

You dig through the remains of the broken box and uncover one usable Simple Chemical Filter hidden underneath a scrap of wood!

Obtain a Simple Chemical Suspension from Magus Burlshin 0/1 (Shard's Landing)

Magus Burlshin (map) is found at -1450, -1095, 0 (zone-in area, marked by the big crystal shard and a tent).

    You say, 'Hail, Magus Burlshin'

Magus Burlshin listens as you quickly recount the instructions that Eilisia gave you. The erudite nods, 'A chemical suspension...' He smiles, 'I would be happy to part with one of my precious concoctions, for a fair price. You see, the tent I have been staying in since I moved out to these hills is in constant need of repair and so I think this would be a fine opportunity for a trade. Bring me some materials to patch up my tent and I will part with the Simple Chemical Suspension that you seek.'

Gather a few Undamaged Naeya Pelts 0/3 (Shard's Landing)

Kill 3 naeya mobs to receive 3x "Undamaged Naeya Pelt".

Deliver the Undamaged Naeya Pelts to Magus Burlshin 0/3 (Shard's Landing)

    You say, 'Hail, Magus Burlshin'

Magus Burlshin says 'Just a few materials to patch up my tent. Hardly an inequitable trade for what you are after.'

    Hand them in:

Magus Burlshin looks over the pelts and smiles, 'These will do nicely, thank you. Oh, right, you were after the suspension.' He digs through his bags and produces a small, tightly-sealed urn. He holds the object out with both hands and leaves you with this warning, 'Be quite careful with this solution, the acidity of the suspension is easily capable of ridding you of limbs if you are careless.'

Use the Mineral Extractor to gather a sample from the coral at Corruption's End 0/1 (Shard's Landing)

Task Window Says: The coral that grows in the pond at Corruption's End has been infused with fear crystal dust. Use the Mineral Extractor to obtain a sample so we can analyze how this substance behaves after being metabolized in simple animal life.

In the southwestern valley of the zone is a pond. There is a "corrupted coral" spawn under the water. Target it and right-click the Mineral Extractor (-1390, 715).

The coral in this pond looks to be infused with small bits of fear crystal. You will need to use a Mineral Extractor to filter out a sample.

You extract a strain of fear crystal that was growing inside of the coral.

Use the Simple Chemical Filter to gather a water sample from Corruption's End 0/1 (Shard's Landing)

Task Window Says: The pond at Corruption's End is rich with fear crystal particles. Use the Simple Chemical Filter to collect a handful of this material. It will be important to analyze how the substance behaves after being distilled in a body of water.

Same location as above, click the Simple Chemical Filter.

You finish collecting a mineral sample.

You filter out a sample of fear crystal dust from the pond water.

Gather several Corrupted Goral Samples from Corruption's End 0/3 (Shard's Landing)

Task Window Says: The goral at Corruption's End have been ingesting bits of fear crystal. 'Obtain' some of their flesh.

Kill three gorals to receive their samples.

Gather several Infected Panther Samples from Corruption's End 0/3 (Shard's Landing)

Task Window Says: The panthers at Corruption's End have also been ingesting fear crystal. 'Obtain' some of their flesh.

Kill three prowlers to receive their samples.

Distill the animal samples in the Simple Chemical Suspension 0/1 (Shard's Landing)

Task Window Says: Use the Simple Chemical Suspension to extract the fear crystal particles from the animal flesh. It is important that we analyze how the substance reacts after being metabolized by complex animal life.

Combine the above six samples in the Simple Chemical Suspension to produce a Crystallized Flesh Sample.

You place the samples of corrupted animal flesh in the Simple Chemical Suspension. After a few moments the flesh dissolves and all that remains is a condensed shard of fear.

Return to Engineer Eilisia with the samples 0/1 (Shard's Landing)

Task Window Says: Eilisia would like to review the samples you have collected so far. Return to the Harbinger camp and speak with her.

Hail her and receive a Heart Crystal Condenser.

    You say, 'Hail, Engineer Eilisia'

Engineer Eilisia looks up and gives you a wide smile, 'So you've collected the requested samples of fear crystal that have been metabolized by three different sources?' She looks over the small reconstructed crystals you have collected. 'Perfect!' She reaches into her bag and hands you a small arcane looking container. 'You will need to take the metabolized crystal samples and unite them into a single shard. Take this piece over to the Heart of Fear and see if we can harness any sort of reaction.'

Combine the samples in the Heart Crystal Condenser 0/1 (Shard's Landing)

Task Window Says: Eilisia is pleased with the data you have helped gather with your samples. She now requests that you combine the discrete samples into a single shard. You can do this with the Heart Crystal Condenser she has provided you with.

Combine the three Crystallized Samples in the condenser.

You place the three differently metabolized shards in the condenser and begin the refining process. After a few moments the samples merge into a single glowing shard. It radiates with a faint power that the crystals surrounding Shard's Landing do not seem to possess.

Release the essence of the Small Crystal of the Heart to the Heart of Fear 0/1 (Shard's Landing)

Task Window Says: The crystal you have created radiates with a faint light that the otherwise lifeless stone surrounding the area does not. Bring this crystal sample near the Heart of Fear that rests in the center of the Harbinger's camp to see if you can harness any sort of reaction.

Stand on the giant crystal in the middle of the crater for this update (don't fall in the hole!). This is a location update

You make your way toward the Heart of Fear and hold the small shard above your head. It emits a subtle glow but little else. You feel that something is missing. Speak to Engineer Eilisia to see what she has to say about this.

You look up at the lifeless chunk of crystal but feel nothing special from its presence.

Ask Engineer Eilisia why the crystal has had no effect 0/1 (Shard's Landing)

Task Window Says: The crystal's reaction was rather unimpressive. See what Eilisia has to say about this.

    You say, 'Hail, Engineer Eilisia'

Engineer Eilisia listens as you explain that there was no significant reaction from your crystal. She looks down and sighs, 'I was afraid of this. You see, every time we collect new samples I have a lingering hope that the various ways in which nature and animals metabolize the substance will reveal a new method to empower the fear shards. Obviously we are surrounded by the blasted stuff, but unless it is empowered it will not react to the Heart of Fear. This is the reason we have sent teams around the globe to collect the remnants of this substance. It's not for a lack of material, but for a lack of correctly attuned material.' She begins to whisper as she explains the process of attuning the crystal you hold in your hand...

Capture a Sentient Soul using the Small Crystal of the Heart 0/1 (Shard's Landing)

Task Window Says: It seems that Eilisia has higher expectations for the naturally metabolized crystal. Although she was hesitant to admit it, there is a known way to empower the crystal shards in order to provoke a reaction from the Heart of Fear.

Seek out an Alaran living in the hills, a member of either The Forsaken or The Believers will do. You will need to weaken their physical form, and then use the crystal to capture their soul. This will be enough to empower the crystal.

Fight an Alaran (can be most types except for nameds, their PHs, or thralls) to at least 25% and right-click the crystal while basically standing right on top of them to receive an Empowered Crystal of the Heart.

    Note: Alarans summon.

a forsaken believer grasps its chest and falls over dead as _____ drains its soul away!

You raise the Small Crystal of the Heart and drain your target's soul!

Release the essence of the Empowered Crystal of the Heart to the Heart of Fear 0/1 (Shard's Landing)

Task Window Says: Take the Empowered Crystal of the Heart back to the Heart of Fear to harness a more potent reaction.

Again, do this on the large crystal in the center.

You raise the Empowered Crystal of the Heart above your head. A blinding flash sends you tumbling to the ground as the crystal is ripped from your hand and absorbed into the Heart of Fear. The voices of the forsaken fill your ears like innumerable raindrops crashing against the ground on a stormy night. The cries of anguish, the growls of disgust and the roars of terror haunt you... Some awesome presence, some great and godly force seems to beckon you to continue your journey and so you find the will to pick yourself up off of the ground and return to Engineer Eilisia.

Report your success to Engineer Eilisia 0/1 (Shard's Landing)

    You say, 'Hail, Engineer Eilisia'

Engineer Eilisia listens intently as you recount how the attuned crystal flew from your hand and evoked visions of nightmarish suffering. She offers her hand to yours as a gesture of comfort, 'This is why I knew I could count on a powerful _____ such as yourself. A lesser being would have fallen dead or never returned here after such an experience!' She retracts her hand and quickly scribbles down a few notes, 'I owe you my thanks for your efforts today. The data you have helped us collect will be of immense value as we continue to study the nature of the Heart of Fear.' She looks away and returns to her notes.

Your faction standing with Harbingers of Thule got better.

Although she did not quite find the words to articulate it, you feel that your work with the Harbingers to uncover the nature behind the Heart of Fear will be invaluable in their efforts to reinstate the Faceless. Your reputation among the Harbingers continues to grow. In fact, Director Idris Manaar is ready to speak with you now.

When you get to the step where you have to click on the black crystal with the alaran mob, be prepared to take hits.

If you fail at the first attempt once the mob is below 25% then you will be FD and gain all aggro. Just click sit/stand and back away, heal up and run back for a 2nd attempt before the mob dies. I seem to get the 2nd attempt to work each time.

You may want to kill slow or hold off dps once the mob hits 25% so that you don't kill it before you get your update. The mob will despawn once you correctly drain its soul.

Don't give up if you don't get the update on the first try, seems like this is rare.

Nevermind, got to 97, and with everything I got was able to kill the mobs needed. Then I realized I accidentally destroyed the fragments needed to complete this quest, and seeing how there is no way to get new ones once you have completed that stage of the task, I had to abandon the quest right near the end. ANOTHER stellar expansion!

Grrrrrrr. Just tried to do this, impossible to solo at 96 (solo task?). At 70khp the mobs hit for 80% of my hp, its fricken absurd. Only people killing anything in this zone are decked out 100tanks and casters who have the benefit of godly pets. VoA is no better. Back to killing light blues @#*$)

Locate a Mineral Extractor from the supply holds in our camp 0/1 (Shard's Landing): The supply boxes and supply barrels are in the rectangular tents near the quest giver (if this information is in any other post I missed it. Harbinger's camp meant absolutely nothing to me, I ran around looking for them for a while (using TAB) never found one and figured it was one of the other camps. They are just inside the tents. Use /open to get the drop, when it fails, re-clicking the same one gave a message saying it was already tried. On all three boxes, I got it from the exact barrel I tried first (re-attempts over a period of several minutes had no effect other than "you've already tried this barrel" type message. Then ran around to several of the other boxes (I found 4, apparently missed one). When I came back to the very first barrel it worked. This pattern was repeated on all three of my guys. Not sure it's necessary but just posting it if somebody else sees the same thing.

<several steps> Always found the kill mobs near the place where that step became active. For the first kills, they were near Magus Burlsin, for the second kills, they were near the coral.

Capture a Sentient Soul using the Small Crystal of the Heart 0/1 (Shard's Landing) Wasted a lot of time on this and am still not sure why some of the mobs did not work. First of all, had no idea what "any Alaran" meant in the discription. My assumption was humanoids in this zone but really had problems finding one that worked. There are two areas where they can be found and the two groups have opposing faction.

Camp #1 is near Bodhassel the Caller (use CTRL-F to find him).
Camp #2 is in the Underground City (UC).

We started in the UC, probably just goofed there, although we used a citizen instead of any kind of believer. Unfortunately the caster must get to within melee range for it to work. As Sippin said "mez helps", enchanter was along with us so I just had to step in and click it.

But since it did not work, we to Camp #1 and this time I did get in melee range (these guys are KoS for some reason but they never surrendered a soul, said they didn't have one (or something). But I'd figured out that melee range was necessary at least. Went back to the UC and did it quickly for all three toons using the believers in the church area of the UC.

We were KoS. We killed three down there, including two labeled "a forsaken believer" exactly as the quest words say. It would say, "entity does not posses the necessary soul"... or something similar on all of them.

    3-4% regular XP at 96. PLUS 4 aa's.

    For the step:

Capture a Sentient Soul using the Small Crystal of the Heart 0/1 (Shard's Landing) ,

you can mez the mob, once it drops to 25% or below, and still click the crystal to capture the sentient soul. Makes life easier for boxers.

The minimum level for the chain of partisan tasks is much lower. I completed the whole chain with a level 87 ranger. While I did get fd'd on the release step, the task did update and allow me to finish. I would guess the minimum level for all SL partisan tasks is 85, but I can't confirm.
