    This quest begins with an Erudite named Magus Burlshin. He is found at the crystal druid ring a short distance from the zone-in in the southeastern valley.

    Prior to the release of Rain of Fear, he was located in Erillion, City of Bronze, and had this to say (no further responses):

    You say, 'Hail, Magus Burlshin'

    Magus Burlshin says 'Hail, stranger. You look like an adventurer, and I have use for adventurers. I imagine that you noticed all of the [crystals] falling from the sky, how could you not. Well, we Magus... Magi, are certain that they will be of some use. They hold a bit of power, even the smallest of them. Not enough to do anything on their own. We're hoping to gather enough of them to do... something with them. I'll take any you can gather up. Though I'm not sure we can offer any sort of reward for you now, we'll certainly remember your kindness.'

    He is now found in Shard's Landing and says:

    You say, 'Hail, Magus Burlshin'

    Magus Burlshin says 'Hail, Stranger. You look like an adventurer, and I have use for adventures. I imagine that you noticed all of the [crystals] falling from the sky a while back, how could you not. Well, we Magus... Magi, have come up with a use for them. They hold a bit of power, even the smallest of them. We used them to build the mystic circle you see here. Those with the proper magical skills can use it to travel between the other magical teleportation anchors around Norrath.'

    You say, 'What crystals?'

    Magus Burlshin says 'We've taken to calling them Fear Shards. We've learned that they have some relationship with the death of Cazic-Thule and whatever that strange god-being tried to do with his power. There's a lot of panic about trying to recover all of these shards in some attempt to restore the god of Fear, which has been a bit of a challenge for us here. Despite that, we could certainly use more of these Fear Shards. Would you gather them for me? Just bring me any you find, but make sure they are appropriate for you to handle.'

    He accepts turn-ins of the following items:

    Small Fear Shard (Rec. 100; Req. 91)
    Petite Dark Fear Shard (Rec. 95; Req. 81)
    Petite Fear Shard (Rec. 85; Req. 71)
    Petite Pale Fear Shard (Rec. 75; Req. 61)
    Meager Dark Fear Shard (Rec. 65; Req. 51)
    Meager Fear Shard (Rec. 55; Req. 41)
    Meager Pale Fear Shard (Rec. 45; Req. 31)
    Tiny Dark Fear Shard (Rec. 35; Req. 21)
    Tiny Fear Shard (Rec. 25; Req. 11)
    Tiny Pale Fear Shard (Rec. 15)

    These are reported as rare drops from any mob within the level range of the item.

    You can only hand in a shard if you are within the shard's specified recommended/required level range. If you try handing in a lower level shard, it will be returned to you with a suggestion that you trade it for one of your own level (with a player).

    Upon turning in a shard, you receive a positive faction boost with "Crystal Circle Builders".

    0 turn-ins: Indifferent
    2 turn-ins: Amiable
    10 turn-ins: Kindly
    15 turn-ins: Warmly
    22 turn-ins: Ally
    41 turn-ins: Maximum Ally

    Upon a single turn-in, you see:

    Magus Burlshin says 'Thank you very much! This will be very handy.'

    Rewards & Achievement

    Once you reach "kindly" faction, you can request the task "Shard Experiences".

    There is an aug reward for the completion of the achievement "Crystal Circle Builder" (see this quest entry for the achievement). As part of this achievement, you need to reach maximum ally.

    November Announcement

    On November 21, 2012, this announcement was made on EQLive, indicating that the quest will still be available after Rain of Fear's launch and that the shards in question would drop more commonly (particularly in new zones). We also got a preview of the rewards.

    Crystalline Shards of Fear having been raining down on Norrath for some time now, and people and creatures the world over have begun to gather them. Items of exceeding rarity, these shards are highly valued by the Adventurers of Norrath as a way to earn a better reputation with Magus Burlshin.

    Magus Burlshin is seeking to complete a grand building project, for the betterment of all Norrathians, and Shards of Fear are critical to his plans. Those who have achieved sufficient faction with him will garner a much more concrete reward, however! A large amount of faction will earn a charm of fearsome power, and those whose reputations have reached the pinnacle of possibility will receive their choice of items: one of three augments of exceeding rarity or a ring that provides travel to Shard's Landing every two hours. Only one reward may be earned, though, so choose wisely!

    Magus Burlshin expects these shards to appear more frequently once Rain of Fear begins and, not only that, but he notes adventurers will most likely see them more in the areas most affected or corrupted by the shards, areas within Rain of Fear itself.

    Good luck in your hunting!

    Trying to do this quest at 103 and he will not accept Small Glowing Fear Shards. I have not seen ANY new ones drop in CotF or TDS, so I am assuming you are s**t out of luck unless you de-level back to 100...

    Not sure you got an answer, but for anyone else who has this problem, just getting faction doesn't give you the aug, just opens the option to do the aug quest, and the achievement. The aug quest is this https://everquest.allakhazam.com/db/quest.html?quest=6179. Once you complete this quest, you get the option for the augs, or the signet ring.

    The three augments now share a lore group so you cannot have more than one of them at once.

    The quest is not repeatable, but there are some extra ways to get the "other" item of the set. Either of these will work:
    • Do all the "Conquest" achievements in the three "Heart of Fear" raid events
    • Do all the "Conquest" achievements in the two "Heart of Fear" group missions

    The group-mission Challenger achievement way was added several months after this quest was introduced. So you can now have both the portal clicky, and also any one of the augments.

    Patch Notes for October 8, 2013

    Quote:
    - The new achievement "Challenger of the Heart of Fear" will give access to the reward set that contains the Signet of the Crystal Circle.
    - - This is an alternate means for group level players to obtain this item. Raid level players that have completed both this achievement and the achievement "Vanquisher of the Heart of Fear" will not gain any benefit from this duplicate reward set. This is intended.

    Assuming you also do the Shard Experiences quest, that's good for 100 points of faction, then 38 small glowing fear shard turn-ins will give you the remaining 1900 faction for the achievement, plus a 39th shard used in the quest itself. And you'll need one shard of a different kind, such as a petite fear shard, which you can get from bazaar.

    Becuase the shards with the BRIGHT in their name are only used for the shard experiences quest and are ground spawns. You need the small GLOWING fear shards to turn in for faction. The glowing are the mob dropped.

    Now that Rain of Fear is live you need to zone into Shard's Landing from City of Bronze and see Magus Burlshin near his camp by the crystal spires just a short distance inside the zone. You can go to him invisible and the naeya won't attack - just be careful handing them in though in case one paths too close.

    When they released Rain of Fear they bumped up the drop rates of Shard's (times 5 chance according to a dev on the forums) however they also increased the number of shards needed to hitr max ally.

    You now seem to need to hand in 40 shards to hit max ally. This count was made by me on a box who has not handed any shards in previously.

    If you handed in ANY shards at ALL prior to Rain of Fear's release, then this number will be lower for you. The patch changed the level of faction hit you get per shard, not any hardcoded number of shards to get max ally. If you're already max ally from the 21 prior to release then you will still be max ally now etc.
    can you still get max faction

    Ok lets be clear, I havent done the prequest so wasnt expecting to get anythng when it went live.

    But honestly for those that did what on earth were the devs thinking when they decided on the item requirements.

    PRE Quest so your target player for the quest is max level 95 and the reward is lev 98 requred !! So you've done the prequest but dont actually
    get to use the item ?classic.

    People have mentioned before why bother with the lower level shards but now with a 98 required it does really seem even more crazy to me.

    And then to pile on the insanity they're leaving the Pre quest active to become a Post quest.......... great i say, i get to have the nice aug anyway,
    but really? hardly 'fair' i think.

    So why not remove the requirement on the item if you did the quest before release thus are prequest flagged ( and really lets be honest the AUG
    isnt a gamebreaker even if you were to have done the prequest at a really low level, the low level games had big boosts before ie defiant gear so 1 cool aug
    isnt going to ruin it, and if you want to leave the quest in place for those of us that didnt bother, make the item have the higher 98 or even 100 required level and I'd be happy to get it then.

    I also think the ring should be a longer cast time with half the cooldown time but maybe thats just me, not that many people would see the ring as a good option anyway given
    the cheepness of gate pots.

    Citraka 95 / KittyBeta 100 Beastlord naturally :)

    When the achievements go live, probably at the launch of RoF (slated for the 28th), you should be able to then select an option. Provided you bought the latest expansion, Rain of Fear.

BTW right next to him is what will be the zone in for shards landing. After the launch u probly find magus burlshin in there not far from the zone in point.

    Actually it takes 11 shards to reach Ally, and 20 to reach max Ally, the 21st shard wil give the message that you could no longer improve faction, meaning the 21st was unnecessary.

    I don't recall any faction requiring maximum ally to get items. Even the Herald of Druzzil Ro ( https://everquest.allakhazam.com/db/npc.html?id=32611 ) in Korafax, Home of the Riders for their best items were just to reach ally.

    By the way, the faction part of ally and scowling is huge to get through to either max it or get out of it.

    I would also ask you to cite your source that sony nerfed it to 11 shards. Have you seen a faction table and how many points it takes to get through the various degrees? Using Allakhazam here, they have the 2 types they know of: EQ:faction ( https://everquest.allakhazam.com/wiki/EQ:faction ):

    Ally = +4 1450 to 2500
    Warmly = +3 1100 to 1450
    Kindly = +2 750 to 1100
    Amiable = +1 150 to 750
    Indifferent = 0 0 to 150
    Apprehensive = -1 0 to -150
    Dubious = -2 -150 to -750
    Threateningly = -3 -750 to -1100
    Ready to Attack = -4 -1100 to -2500

    It took approximately 18-19 shards to max faction. doesn't seem like much but when you factor in the rarity... -Correction. I recounted after a friend maxed. I missed a couple. He maxed Ally in 21 shards. So 21 shards = max Ally per person. Posted same page by MikuRBD and Larth, My original post says nothing about maxing ally to buy anything, I am simply restating what has been said throughout this thread. In reaching ally you may be correct so I give the benefit of doubt, MisterPanda states, " I hit max Ally with 20 Petite Dark Fear Shards the 21st turn in got me the messege about faction not getting any better.

    Here is my original post: "Poor whiney ***** couldn't get to 20 or 21 to max ally so SOE NERFED it to 11 shards,,,,, if SOE gave you a gold bar weighting 2.2 lbs. the average player would ****** it was to heavy to carry. Petite Dark Fear Shards [Level 81 to 95]
    (Crystal Circle Builders Faction):

    0 = Magus Burlshin regards you indifferently -- looks like quite a gamble.

    2 = Magus Burlshin judges you amiably -- looks like quite a gamble.

    6 = Magus Burlshin kindly considers you -- looks like quite a gamble.
    7 = Magus Burlshin kindly considers you -- looks like quite a gamble.
    8 = Magus Burlshin looks upon you warmly -- looks like quite a gamble.
    9 = Magus Burlshin looks upon you warmly -- looks like quite a gamble.
    10 = Magus Burlshin looks upon you warmly -- looks like quite a gamble.
    11 = Magus Burlshin regards you as an ally -- looks like quite a gamble.

    I don't think you need max ally to accomplish whatever building this faction is for. This number of Fear Shards should apply to any level attempting this.

    I see that players use his currently empty vendor list to sell items gotten from the mobs. The Turn-in messages after giving him the Fear Shard is:

    [Sat Nov 03 10:25:25 2012] Your faction standing with Crystal Circle Builders got better.
    [Sat Nov 03 10:25:25 2012] Magus Burlshin says 'Thank you very much! This will be very handy.'

    I realize that this is well down the years even since this expansion came out, but I wanted to point out that you may reach ally with turning in 11 shards, you need max all to achieve the quest necessary to get the aug, Or signet ring if that's your choice.You also need max ally to see any of the merchandise on Magus Burshin. With the exception of the portal spells now. My wizard didn't need any faction when I ran her over there. Also, for anyone following along what it takes to reach max ally now, it's roughly 40 or 41 depending on how you look at it, They also show you exactly what each turn in gives you in points. It's now 50 per shard.

    To see the Scrying Stones, Purified Crystal, and Small Portal Fragments you need to be max ally with Crystal Circle Builders?

    What I did
    # Oct 31 2012 at 9:26 AM Rating: Decent
    Petite Pale Fear Shard (Rec. 75; Req. 61) 18
    Meager Dark Fear Shard (Rec. 65; Req. 51) 4
    shroud 65
    These 21 shards got me to max ALLY

    Sunderock Springs - been killing LB lvl 70 a high desert drake with my 78 wiz. got the above shards. not sure why the last shard to drop where different

    pain in the $%#$# to do the shroud thing but after learing on how to pass the items I need to the shroud toon.

    items needed to be passed to your shourded toon are.
    Cloudy potions - some but I did use the shroud that did the HIDE and SNEAK
    The shards you plan to turn in make sure your shourd is in the level range of the shards
    Can pre buy the stone to the portal to Argath, Bastion of Illdaera and pass it

    http://thedruidsgrove.org/archive/eq/t-17045.html
    I did use the Goblin Rogue (Rogue Class)------------------ shound- put AA into run speed, Make the AA hot key to return to your shourd creater

    create the hot keys from the actions ablities for HiDE and SNEAK and use the cloudy potions was able to hug the zone walls with out dieing and did the turn in ok.

    used the AA to return to your shourd creater to get back and unshroud. NOTE if you ahve items on theShrounded toon - pass them to another toon before unshourding and loosing them.

    Happy hunting
