A high amiably faction (274 is the reported faction value that works) with Ashen Order is needed to receive the quest and to turn in the quest items.
Low "amiably" does not work !

Brother Velan Torresk may be found at -214.00, -1531.00, -117.25.

You need to be at least +274 (amiable) to Ashen Order to do this quest.

You say, 'Hail, Brother Velan Torresk'

Brother Velan Torresk says 'Greetings, ______! I am Velan Torresk of the Ashen Order. I am in charge of training the newest members of our clan, and helping them advance their skills and rank. When members perform certain tasks on behalf of the Order, they advance to a higher rank in our clan, and are awarded a special [sash].

    You say, 'What special sash?'

Brother Velan Torresk says 'The Sashes of Order are given out by the various trainers of our clan. I give out the [white training sash] and the [yellow Sash of Order], and [Reyia] is in charge of the [orange and red sashes].'

You say, 'What white training sash?'

Brother Velan Torresk says 'The white training sash of the Ashen Order is awarded to our new members for completing a few simple tasks to prove their devotion to our clan. As you know, Freeport is a very hostile place, under constant attack from [orcs], wild beasts, and even the undead. To help keep this city and its citizens relatively safe, we must help the Militia protect the main gates. Bring me two Deathfist pawn scalps from those vile [Deathfist orcs], a snake fang, and some bone chips from a skeleton. Good luck, Flailz, represent us well!'

    You say, 'What Deathfist orcs?'

Brother Velan Torresk says 'The Deathfist orcs are a large tribe of orcs who live out in the desert. They are constantly sending small raiding parties and scouts to attack Freeport and its citizens.'

    Hand in the items.

Brother Velan Torresk says 'Ah, very good. You are well on your way to earning the white sash.'
Brother Velan Torresk says 'Ah, very good. You are well on your way to earning the white sash.'
Brother Velan Torresk says 'Ah, very good. You are well on your way to earning the white sash.'
Brother Velan Torresk says 'Good work, ______, you've worked hard and prove yourself a valuable addition to the Ashen Order. Here's your white sash, wear it with pride.'

5/23/2021 - Amiable is *not* enough to do this quest. I am trying to do the monk Epic the "legit" way on the Miragul server as an Iksar Monk. I just killed enough orcs in Commonlands and Nektulos to get to 103 (Amiably) faction with Ashen Order and Brother Velan Torresk still tells me to get lost.

Brother Velan Torresk judges you amiably -- looks kind of dangerous. (Lvl: 70)
You say, 'Hail, Brother Velan Torresk'

Every item in the Sash and Headband quests can be traded, including the final product. Just gather all the items with your iksar and create a disposable human monk to turn in the items and get the rewards.

I went back at 274 faction (still Amiable) and he finally gave me the quest. I'm still 250 away from kindly, so you have to be about mid-amiable. just hitting amiable isn't good enough.

Did the white sash quest on 2 November 2021 (as per arandomdruid00 experience, I was at amiable 186 to do the turn in, less than 100 wouldn't work so I killed a bunch of orcs in the commonlands)

    However the faction changes are 25 / 3 / 1:
[Tue Nov 02 11:01:54 2021] Your faction standing with Ashen Order has been adjusted by 25.
[Tue Nov 02 11:01:54 2021] Your faction standing with Knights of Truth has been adjusted by 3.
[Tue Nov 02 11:01:54 2021] Your faction standing with Silent Fist Clan has been adjusted by 1.

This matches what Zliz posted back in 2014 - I think there may have been some confusion on the faction for turning in the newbie guild note rather than this quest for the white sash

    As of December 2020:
+100 (amiably) with the Ashen Order is a high enough faction level to do the quest.

When starting with a fresh character, doing the full quest line of headband quests first is NOT enough faction to start the sash quests. For speed, create 2 new and independent monks. Create the first monk for the headband quest line. Create a 2nd new monk for the sash quest line.

For monks with lower than +100 Ashen Order faction, start a new monk to immediately start the sash quest line:
    (1) In the character creation process, start a new human monk.
    (2) Select Deity: Quellious.
    (3) Select City: West Freeport.
    (4) De-press the "Tutorial" Button so that the button is out/convex.
    (5) Type in a long name.
    (6) Click the Enter World button.
(7a) The character will spawn in West Freeport with a "Tattered Note" in inventory.
(7b) The character will spawn facing Puab Closk.
    (8) Give the "Tattered Note" to Puab Closk to receive the following faction increases:
    +100 Ashen Order
    +15 Knights of Truth
    +5 Silent Fist Clan
    (9) Begin the sash quest line.

This was tested and confirmed as of December 2020.

Tried to do this at +103 faction and it would not work. Tried it at +274 and it did work. 103 and 274 are both "amiable" so it's not just the label of your faction rank that matters. There is some numeric value that lands somewhere within the amiable range that is required, and 100 ain't it.

I started a Drankkin Monk and at level 25 went into Freeport to check on the sashes. I con amiably with Brother Velan and when I inquired about the white training sash; Brother Velan tells me "You need to prove your dedication to our cause before I can discuss such matters with you." This is telling me that Drakkins are being singled out.

Interesting. Try creating a human monk there in freeport and then con this guy. I'm curious if the faction level is any different.

Nope. Level 2 Human Monk cons amiable, but I still need to prove myself. However, you don't need to do any faction grinding. Just turn in your newbie note to Puab Closk and you get +100 faction increase with Ashen Order and then you should be able to start the Sash quests. If still unable to do them, do the Silent Fist Headband quests in North Qeynos. If you do all the way up to the Purple Headband, you get +13 faction increase to Ashen Order and then you will definitely be able to start the Sash quests. Not sure if turning in the newbie note will work alone as I did the Headband quests first.

My level 5 Qeynos monk conned warmly initially with the Freeport monk guild. I had already gotten the orange headband (search every Qeynos merchant and you'll eventually find putrid rib bones being sold) and I rescued Tomer over a dozen times. If your on a classic server like myself just focus on the skellies and gnoll pawns until you ding level 4 ish. Save the 4 gnoll pawn scalps for the headband quest and all the stacks of bone chips. If you focus on the humanoids in the Qeynos yard you'll get plenty of merchant trash to sell and easy collect a full set of cloth armor. I saved up 10 plat 5 gold, bought an invis potion next to the bank and ran to Freeport at level 5. Use the potion in either Highpass or Gorge of King Xorbb and hope it lasts through Runnyeye Citadel. Hopefully you timed it right and Kithicor is in it's day cycle. If not, hit /time and wait until 0600 am. While at Freeport do a couple belt quests then hop the boat to Butcherblock. Turn in the bonechips to the Pally guildmaster in Kaladim for some experience and good faction. Now your free to go to a proper newbie area like Gfay and hang out with the elves. Sure you have to boat back to the Freeport monk guild every couple levels for training but how often do you see low level monks in Crushbone. Totally worth the effort.

You need at least kindly faction to complete this quest.

    Full dialogue:

You say, 'Hail, Brother Velan Torresk'

Brother Velan Torresk says 'Greetings, XXX! I am Velan Torresk of the Ashen Order. I am in charge of training the newest members of our clan, and helping them advance their skills and rank. You say, 'What deathfist orcs?'

Brother Velan Torresk says 'The Deathfist orcs are a large tribe of orcs who live out in the desert. They are constantly sending small raiding parties and scouts to attack Freeport and its citizens.'

    <hand in what he wants>

Brother Velan Torresk says 'Ah, very good. You are well on your way to earning the white sash.' (says this 3 times)
Brother Velan Torresk says 'Good work, XXX, you've worked hard and prove yourself a valuable addition to the Ashen Order. Here's your white sash, wear it with pride.'

Any reason why a human monk lvl 58 would have trouble with this? I have an amibly faction with this monk guild master. every time I go to turn in tells me he won't help me. And I go through the speach and it tells me I need to prove myself before he will discus it any further.

Actually there's even more faction work involved for you, since I can guarantee you are KoS to Antonican Monks. You FIRST need to go to Blackburrow and kill LOTS of gnolls. We're talking about 500-1000 gnolls here. This should get you on good standing with Quenos Guards and Antonican Monks. You should then be able to do the headband quests. In order to do sash quests, you can either try to sneak into FP to get to the monk guild, or repeat your faction raising efforts on orcs.

Now, I do suggest that every monk put the efforts into this, due to the fact that you need the robe of the lost circle to get the monk epic. And a 40% haste glove is nothing to balk about.

Yes, it's possible to do the sash quests as well as the headband quests (in Qeynos) with an Iksar monk, but there's a lot of faction work in store for you beforehand. Kill lots of orcs and turning in lots of belts to the Freeport Militia captain while in wolf form will let you walk the streets of Freeport safely and eventually will let you do the sash quests.

For those having problems getting the sash quest started with a human agnostic monk, it seems to simply be a faction thing. When I arrived in Freeport, I could not activate the sash quest. After killing about 30 or so DF Pawns, my faction was apparently high enough to get the quest and successfully completed the white sash. Just thought ya'll would want to know.

Yup I agree, same thing happened to me, although after ~50 pawns i still couldn't activate the quests. I suggest grouping up and hitting the orc camps in EC/WC for Legionaires and Centurions. After only a couple of these guy's i was able to activate the quests AND you have a good chance of getting some of the components (you may as well kill a few darkweed snakes while you're at it too!)

My agnostic Qeynos monk came to Freeport at level 10, and was able to get the quest started with no additional work except slaughtering the half-dozen or so Pawns she met on the way to the guild hall. This may be due to the fact that she had done the first two headband quests in Qeynos, which raise Ashen Order faction (I think). She didn't complete the quests until she had cleaned out Orc 1 in EC a few times (and had been killed by Lord Shin Ree), but she get the quests without any additional faction work at all, which was a pleasant surprise. Both before and after her mass Orc-slaughtering spree she conned "amiably" at the Freeport monk guild hall.
