This quest originates with Merchant Ayyad (loc 246, -3, -187) in Shar Vahl.

You say, 'Hail, Merchant Ayyad!'

Merchant Ayyad says, ‘Hello ______. Sorry but I have no time to chitchat. I’m looking for the help of a citizen.’

You say, ‘I am a citizen!’

Merchant Ayyad looks at you excitedly. ‘Show me you acrylia slate and I’ll explain my situation.’

Give your Acrylia Slate of Shar Vahl to Merchant Ayyad.

Merchant Ayyad says 'Some of my wares are spoiling and I must place them in a container to preserve them. I cannot afford to take the loss that would result if they were to rot. Please ______, take this bowl and combine two lumps of gray mud with a flask of water and xakra bile. Take the resulting clay and this sketch with another water flask to fashion an unfired gray jar. Fire it in a kiln with a firing sheet and return to me with the product as soon as you can.'

You receive your Acrylia Slate of Shar Vahl.
You receive Ayyad’s Clay Bowl.
You receive a Reusable Gray Jar Sketch.
You gain experience!!

You also get your Acrylia Slate of Shar Vahl back.

Take 2 x Lump of Gray Mud (ground spawn/dropped), 1 Xakra Bile (dropped), 1 Water Flask, and combine in Ayyad's Clay Bowl to craft Gray Clay (trivial 21). Put the Gray Clay, a Water Flask, and your Grey Jar Sketch onto a pottery wheel to craft an Unfired Gray Jar (trivial 41). Fire the Unfired Gray Jar in a kiln with a Firing Sheet to craft a Gray Jar (trivial 35). Give the Gray Jar to Merchant Ayyad.

Merchant Ayyad says 'Excellent! Please accept this knapsack as payment for your trouble. Here is my seal as well. I can always use more jars and if you give me four of my seals I will share with you a family secret.'

You receive Ayyad's Knapsack and Ayyad's Seal.

Continue making and handing in Gray Jars until you have four seals, then give the seals to Merchant Ayyad.

Merchant Ayyad says 'Excellent, ______, few of our kind show a true interest in the more refined arts of pottery these days. It is very good to see the young people taking interest in the old arts. Here is a Basic Runequill Set. Take the instruments in the set and practice marking runes on the gray jars that you previously brought to me. To etch the runes, simply cover a gray jar with some Xakra bile and use the Runequill Set to etch the runes on to the jar. You'll want to fire them in a kiln when you're finished. When those jars become trivial come back and give me those basic tools and we'll see about upgrading them.'

You receive a Basic Runequill Set. Level up your Pottery skill until you're at >= 100, then give your Basic Runequill Set back to Ayyad.

Merchant Ayyad says 'You're progressing nicely, ______. Take this sculpting tool and add it to the set you already have. This new quill set will be able to make some very nice urns that should help ease the burden of moving all that heavy clay around. Take a gray jar and use the new set of tools I've given you to etch Xakra blood into runes on the side of the jars. These should prove to be very useful in your labors in the future. Once you have mastered those runes, bring back your runequill set to me for another addition.'

You receive a Novice's Runequill Set. Continue to improve your Pottery skill to between 100 and 103 (to what level?), then hand in your Novice's Runequill Set.

Merchant Ayyad says 'You continue to amaze me with your progress, ______. Here is the final pen to add to your set of runequills. I have just received word that the king has need of your particular talents. Take this note to Guard Fareed and he will instruct you further. Also, this runequill set is able to mark a set of runes on the Grey Jars with Sonic Wolf Blood. This will enchant the jar and make a great container. I trust your artistic instincts to guide you. You should also tell me when you're ready for some [additional instructions].'

You receive a Finely Crafted Runequill Set and Ayyad's Note to Fareed. Take the note to Khala Dun Fareed at -23.33, 485.25, -163.62.

Khala Dun Fareed says 'Ah, you've arrived, good. Ayyad tells me you're a very quick learner and a skilled sculptor. The king has taken a fondness for a new game that has been very popular with the people of late. This game, called Brehad, requires the use of a set of 10 Runed Vah Shir figurines in order to play. The king's set was recently broken by a rather intrusive rhinobeetle. The king would be very pleased if you would create another set for him. Take this Padded Brehad Case and place 10 figurines in it. Return the completed set to me and I'm sure that the king will reward you nicely.'

On handing in the Brehad Figure Set to Khala Dun Fareed:

Khala Dun Fareed says, ‘Well done Duranna, this is a fine, fine set of Brehad figures. I’m sure the king will be very pleased. Here, take this note to Ayyad; he has instructions on how you should be rewarded.’

You gain experience!

Head back to Ayyad.

You say, 'I am ready for additional instructions.'

Merchant Ayyad says 'Mastered those runes already, ______? You're learning very fast indeed. Your next lesson will be in the molding of a new type of item. You'll need to gather some gray mud from below the city and mix it with some Rockhopper blood to make a block of reddish clay. Take this block of reddish clay and combine it with a Vah Shir model sketch to create an unfired Vah Shir figurines. Fire the model in a kiln with a firing sheet to create a Finished Vah Shir figurine. Finally, use the Runequill Set to etch grimling blood into runes on the figurine.'

You actually need Gray Clay, not gray mud. Make it like you did before.

Craft a Block of Reddish Clay by combining 1 x Gray Clay + 1 x Rockhopper Blood in a pottery wheel (trivial 21).

Craft a Vah Shir Figurine by combining 1 x Block of Reddish Clay + 1 x Vah Shir Model Sketch + 1 x Water Flask in a pottery wheel (trivial 142).

Craft a Finished Vah Shir Figurine by combining 1 x Vah Shir Figurine + 1 x High Quality Firing Sheet in a kiln (trivial 17).

Craft a Runed Vah Shir Figurine by combining 1 x Finely Crafted Runequill Set + 1 x Finished Vah Shir Figurine + 1 x Grimling Blood + 1 x Water Flask in a kiln (trivial unknown but between 129 and 148).

Make 10 such figurines and put them in the Padded Brehad Case and combine to craft a Brehad Figure Set, then give this to Khala Dun Fareed (any dialogues/faction hits/experience hits?).

You receive Fareed's Note to Ayyad, which you should take back to Ayyad.

Merchant Ayyad says 'Welcome back ______, I trust you behaved well in the presence of the king's servants. It seems Fareed was very impressed with your work, as he has instructed me to give you a very nice reward. Here, take this Urn, it will surely prove very useful to you as you continue your study of the molding of the earth. Oh, I almost forgot to tell you, Grilo the mason was here earlier looking for you, he has heard of your talents and believes that you might do well in the school of masonry as well. Seek him out.'

You receive Ayyad's Runed Urn.

Unsolved from here.

The location is actually 246, -3, -187).

Edit: I handed in my Basic Runequill Set with the skill of 54 (I did the free tradeskill quest before) and received the next set. I tried that again and I received the Finely Crafted Runequill Set (and the letter) with a skill of 54! It's probably not supposed to work this way, but I won't complain. Smiley: smile But Ayyad is aware of my skill and doesn't reacte to "additional instructions".

This is the way it has always worked. It did back in 2001/2 when Luclin came out and recently when our group from here did a Luclin guild. I can't tell you how many times I lost that set and had to repeat the quest up to the point of getting the first runequill set. From there you just keep turning in the set until you get upgraded to where you were when the combine fail occurred.

So has anyone pursued this quest any further? Any idea where Grilo the Mason can be found.

I've googled him, but other than this thread, I haven't found any information on him at all.

Well, one successful combine to make a Runed Vah Shir Figurine, then a failure that ate my Finely Crafted Runequill Set. Now deciding whether to start the whole thing again. The STUPID thing is my pottery skill is 136, and years ago I finished this quest on another char with a skill of 122..........

I ran into the same situation and redid the quest until I got my Finely Crafted Runequill set and managed to finish off all the runed figurines without losing it a second time.

I levelled pottery to 103 before turning in the Basic Runequill Set to receive the Novice's Runequill Set. Just to see what would happen, I immediately turned in the Novice's Runequill Set and received the Finely Crafted Runequill Set and Ayyad's Note to Fareed, Therefore the level is between 100 and 103.
