Anniversary events tend to run from mid-March to mid-April (sometimes to mid-May) each year. They are not available during the "off season".

For an overview and list of EverQuest Anniversary events, see this quest entry.

This is a task introduced with EverQuest's 12th anniversary (and expected to be available only during anniversary season)

It begins with Seeker Nerattan, a high elf who roams around the vendor building in the Sunrise Hills.

You say, 'Hail, Seeker Nerattan'

Seeker Nerattan sighs, obviously displeased with something, 'Have you seen them? ... No, I suppose you wouldn't, or couldn't have. Dastardly constructs of that cursed Maiden, if only the Burning Prince could exact swift revenge on them... Perhaps you could [assist] me in my endeavors here today?'

You say, 'I will assist you.'

Seeker Nerattan nods, his mood slightly elevated by your willingness to speak with him, 'The miserable [mortal enemies] of the temple set upon me as I was transporting a number of relics back from various planes on Norrath. Now I face the prospect of returning to Tazgar empty handed...'

You say, 'Mortal enemies?'

Seeker Nerattan nods. His face becomes contorted with an expression of bitter hatred, 'Blasted shadowed men, everywhere and nowhere at once! It is not as if exacting my revenge on them takes precedence over returning the relics to our temple though. If you are [willing] to assist me in retrieving the relics, I would be most grateful.'

You say, 'I am willing.'

Seeker Nerattan says 'Very well, I expect most of the artifacts to be strewn about somewhere in the neighborhood. There may be more than one of each type, but as long as I return to Tazgar with at least one complete set I should be okay.'

You have been assigned the task 'Hunt of the Shards'.

The items you need to collect are ground spawns around the Sunrise Hills zone. At least some of them are known to share spawn tables, so you may have to go to some locations multiple times to get all the items you need.

Flavor Text

If you hail him again after having completed the task:

You say, 'Hail, Seeker Nerattan'

Seeker Nerattan says 'Greetings again _____. May the fires of the Burning Prince light your path and keep you from all ills of the darkness. I cannot wholly express the depths of my gratitude for your service in recollecting our prized artifacts. Tazgar will be most pleased.'

If he's been recently helped, he has alternate hail text for someone else requesting the task. In this case, his response to the hail is happier, and he mentions the name of the person who helped when the new person offers to [assist]:

You say, 'Hail, Seeker Nerattan'

Seeker Nerattan smiles and bows, the flames around him burning brightly, 'Greetings to you adventurer. I hope all is well for you today. Perhaps you could [assist] me with a small favor? If you're not too busy that is.'

You say, 'I will assist you.'

Seeker Nerattan says 'Very good then, _____ just recently helped me retrieve most of my artifacts, but there are a number still missing. You see, I was set upon by the [minions of shadow] while transporting a number of relics exhumed from various locations on Norrath. The blasted creatures took it upon themselves to not only steal away all of the relics in my possession, but to scatter them about randomly here in the hills.'

Hasn't gotten any easier in the modern era! Here's what I had left after completing one full set(hours of running around):
5 Diamond of Vegarlson
4 Carved Eye of the Faceless
4 Frost Shattered Vah Shir Claw Tip
5 Vishimtar's Vicious Mushroom Snack
1 Crystal Encrusted Gold Gear
2 Prophetic Dragon Scribed Rune
1 Torn Dungeon Map Fragment

Now for practical stuff that would have helped me but wasn't posted here:
The ground spawns are very small glowing orbs. They can be seen from a great distance. I suggest the first time you find one you take a good look at it and back away to get a better idea before picking it up(unless someone's in the zone with you who might pinch it.)

Figure out a good pattern to run through the zone and cover most of the territory. There are a lot of spawn points and you can use the coordinates here as a basis, but it's far from all of the locations. After you've got a good pattern down, run a neighborhood and then try running it backwards in the next neighborhood. Camera angle can matter, so levitate and mixing up your route can help you find it all(eventually.)

It didn't seem like any more or less spawned in populated neighborhoods, so just avoid the lag and difficult visibility and go to empty ones.
aug is now prestige

the aug was changed to prestige so don't waste your time if you're not often gold.

Been looking for Seeker npc for about 20 minutes now and not showing up. Is this quest not yet active for 17th anniversary?

edit... Nevermind, I see that the older anniversary quests start April 27

Did this last night for my trio. Fortunately, the pieces are not Lore and are tradable, so no need to have the whole crew run around. I just ran my druid around looking for the drops. Took just about 4 hours to get 3 full sets of drops. By the time I was done, I had just 3 of the mana shard and one other piece (forgot which one). Of the other 10 pieces, I had anywhere from 1 to 7 extras.

I didn't repeat any neighborhoods, I just took a circuit though one, then moved on to the next one. I sorted the neighborhoods by plots used, and went to the ones with the fewest used, figuring people probably start this in their own neighborhood (I did), so stuck with the least used. Once I arrived, I checked to see if I was alone (I always was), and then made my circuit. Almost every one netted 4-6 pieces, except one where I only got 2. That one may have been picked just before I got there.

The locs supplied in this thread were very helpful. Almost all the ones I found were from those spots. I found maybe 5-6 more spots, but didn't write them down. They were all near spots already listed. For the most part, just look near the edges/walls of the areas, or around trees and rocks. Most were visible from a decent distance.

One other note worth mentioning. With the change from last week (week before that? can't remember), buffs don't wear off in Sunrise Hills! Get Communion of Cheetah from a druid, or the bard's big run-speed buff before you start. It will stay up the entire time :)

Pieces are not only tradable, but when you give them to a toon they get the completion for the task. You only need one set and to pass it around to all of your toons.

This no longer seems to be true as I'm doing the quest right now and have a majority of the pieces and am getting no update at all.

Edit... Worked after I dropped each individual piece on the ground and picked up.

This is not true I just finished this quest with one toon and when you hail for the update and to get your aug the pieces are gone. Unless they changed it in the last day you will need a set for each toon.

For me (March 2014) I collected multiple items of same item, except the rarest of them all, the Broken Mana Shard, once I had that I went and hailed NPC, and each item decreased in my inventory by 1 (did not lose them all, nor was I able to keep them all). This is a boring mindless quest with no benefit except to mark off the 1th annivary task as done. At lvl 100 this is very lame, and no chance of battle or death.

ok just wanted to say thanks to the wonderful posts here with the locations.. I copied those into my neighborhood_txt_3. file and followed those marks took me prolly a total time of 4 to 5 hours split between 1 evening and part of a morning got all my shards.. think i only went thru about 6 neighborhoods total got more than 3 or 5 spares of all but the 3 rarest of the shards.. which is the mana shard, knowledge book, and droconik artifact .. (spelling off) . what helped me alot was i turned my particle density up and I usually keep under the options window under advanced keep those all unchecked but todo this quest i had to turn advanced lighting on.. made a big difference plus it made the scenery much more beautiful as i ran thru the neighborhoods.. but for a few hours work nice reward.. now to finish up the 13th anniv quests.. got 4 more togo.. good luck to ya'll ..

Is the quest gone already? I had all the items to turn in but didn't have a chance to do it yet. I logged in today and they are gone from my inventory.

Seems I moved them to another character, still have them and I'm awaiting the next time.

Updating map file
# Apr 15 2011 at 11:39 PM Rating: Decent
It is very cool that the locations have been posted. However, I'm about to go crazy(er) trying to get them into my map file. I copied the locations in the main section into neighborhood.txt, at the end with EQ closed (though the first time I did that, EQ was open). When I open EQ, during the file check it keeps restoring the map file, effectively removing the locations. I even notices a slight difference in the copied text from that in the file (three places were there are two spaces instead of one). Is there some trick to this? I can't understand how, but did I mess it up by trying to change it with EQ open? Thanks for any help!

Try installing them into neighborhood_1.txt, neighborhood_2.txt or neighborhood_3.txt. The unnumbered versions are the standard EQ map (if there is one) and if changed it will get replaced when you start game (patcher). If you use the maps from mapfiend.net you may want to use the "_3" version which is usually empty. That way you can just remove file when you no longer what, or turn off the display of layer 3 in the map viewer.

FYI: if you change map files while the game is running you can save yourself from having to quit and restart them game. Reload the UI (user interface) with either /reloadui default (or whatever UI you use). You can also do the reloadui from the options screen. Hope this helps.

For the “Hunt the Shards” task, we intend to increase the amount of spawns available. Additionally, we plan to increase the chances that the rare items will spawn. This will decrease the chance of some of the common items spawning as a result.

We plan on hotfixing these changes either Thursday before prime time, or 4am Friday, depending on when testing can be completed.

Developers idea of a good birthday party.........DUH lets send our little brainless minions wandering aimlessly around 50 of the same zones picking up the same **** over and over for days and days. HAHA maybe we can make em stoopid enough from boredom and lack of excitement they will buy out the marketplace or huh maybe even turn over their next 10 unborn children.

WTF were you thinking developers? dammit, man., a person can only take so much of this mindless stoopidity! you really think that aug is worth days and days of the same zone 50X over?

loop around one housing.. zone into other.. make loop.. go back to first zone.. they should have repopped along route

Rare drops are the Broken Shard of a Mana Stone, Prophetic Dragon Scribed Rune and Zebuxoruk's Knowledge of the Gods.

Spawns can be spotted from a short distance as they are glowing spakly green things on the ground.

It appears there are always at least 2 up at a time, but surely never more than 4.

Using location posts here, my own locations and eliminating those that are seemingly duplicates (very close proximity ones).... here is a cut and paste for your Neighborhood 3 maps:

Maybe one of the first few days you could camp a spot when everyone was running around looking for stuff. Now though if you do that your just waisting your time. It seems like there is only 1 item drop up at a time. Once some one picks that up another piece will spawn some where else. EDIT: I was told it was 1 spawn per zone. The moment the item gets picked up another item spawns some where else. This seems to be true. So like i said maybe the first day or 2 when everyone was doing the task it was okay to camp a spot but now its not. In fact most times i was the only one in the zone. Makes this task even tougher. EDIT: Both Zebuxoruk's Knowledge of the Gods and Prophetic Dragon Scribed Rune were very close to each other. I found them right after it started raining. I am not sure if raining has any effect on anything or maybe i was just super lucky. Would be interesting to see if any druids using Wake of Karana found it easier to find stuff.EDIT: Wake of Karana did not work to try to get it to rain. It will stop it from raining if it starts. Just one other thing. I found most of the pieces i have found at night in game using /time.

I've seen two spawns up at once right next to each other, like three feet or so apart

Yeah same here as i had already written in my edit. The 3 rare items are going for insane amounts of pp on cazic server. Some people are using this quest as a means to make a lot of pp. They maybe spend a few hours each day going through and maybe get a few rares and then try to sell them in the bazaar for a ton of pp or try to sell off the whole set. I got enough stuff for one character. I stopped at that point. Not gonna bother getting for my other chars not when i still have progression stuff to work though along with getting more aa's.
