I had to do this quest a few times before I got it right. When you go to Brin Stolunger at the Grounds of Fate (Upstairs) in South Qeynos and tell him "I am a young steel warrior", he gives you a box with 10 slots. Fill it with regular sized bat wings (5) and regular sized snake scales (5); don't use large or giant versions and don't mix sizes; and don't stack anything (fill up each slot with 1 item). Once filled, hit the combine button and give it back to Brin. He will give you a Letter of Introduction that you need to take to Axe Broadsmith, who's in a hut at the Fishing Lake (towards Surefall Glade) in Qeynos Hills. When you give the letter from Brin to Axe, Axe will tell you to kill the "strange skeleton" that will immediately appear on the opposite shore directly across from the hut. The skeleton will disappear if you wait too long, but I've always been able to run (w/out SoW) around the South end of lake and kill it before it disappears. The skeleton has spawned for me everytime, unless someone has attacked Axe recently. The strange skeleton disapated once before I got to it, because I forgot that it was supposed to spawn on the opposite shore (doh!). The Skeleton is too easy to kill (and it even jokes about it), and drops a skull and a sword. Take the skull back to Axe and give it to him (DON'T give anything else to Axe, keep the other loot -otherwise you have to do quest over again). Axe will then give you a Letter of Recommendation to take back to Brin. After giving the letter from Axe to Brin, Brin will give you a note to give to Grahan Rothkar (bureaucrats! nothin but paperwork, when do I get to kill something!), who's in the basement of the Grounds of Fate. Give the note to Grahan and he will give you a key to door #5 (I repeated the quest several times with the same key, they won't give you another key if you already have one). The doors are numbered counter-clockwise starting from the Punishment Rack (the thing that clamps down on your neck and wrists, which is near the entrance to Grahan's room). You must open door #5 with the key in hand (i.e. put key in your hand as if you are giving it to someone so that it becomes the mouse cursor), or else the lion will not appear in the cell. If you opened the door without the key in hand and lion is not there, you don't have to do quest over again, just go back outside and reopen the door with the key this time. It's too bad that the key won't lock the door behind you because that darn lion runs away everytime he gets the smallest scratch (the big *****) and he's fast! If lag is bad, he may seem to disappear on you, but he is headed toward the porticullis at the back entrance to the Grounds of Fate (practice the route!). If he escapes past the porticullis into the streets of Qeynos, a guard will kill it and you'll have to start all over. I've killed it several times right at the porticullis. It's a good thing it takes a few seconds for it to raise high enough for the lion to get through it. It may help to have friends waiting at the porticullis to block its escape or help cut it down if it makes it that far. The lion will drop a lion hide (orange color) and may also drop meat or a HQ Cat Pelt. Give the orange colored lion hide to Grahan (don't give him any of the other loot, or you'll have to do the whole thing over). He'll then give you a Strongbear Bracer. I've repeated the quest several times since getting a bracer and Grahan will not give me another one.

I agree; great post! I did this quest with my level 7 barbarian warrior. I picked up the batwings and snake scales on my way into town. I just followed the directions after that. I also only handed in the orange lion skin at the end (did not hand in the meat) and recieved my strongbear bracers. Fun easy quest.

Has the Lion respawn been patched out since this post was first written? If the lion kills me (and he has twice so far, I'm only level 4 half-elf) I can recover the key from my corpse. I open the door to his cage both normally, and with key in hand, and the lion doesn't reappear as described by Elric...

I have tried this but the young lion has never appeared. I had the key in my hand opened door number five and no lion. Do I have to sit in there and wait?

This quest is one of my personal favorites, because you can start it at first level, begin seeing progress at first or certainly by second, but it keeps you going until 5th or 6th, resulting in a decent, level-appropriate item.

PvPers take note: it's a light source, and No Drop.

The lion has always been, for me, behind the door on the left. He will not spawn until you are given the key.

Did the quest, never found lion. Checked every door and never found. Maybe there is a time limit on the quest? I waited a long time before delivering the letter and such, but immediatly looked for lion and couldn't find =(

Lion ect

The lion is in the door behind the guy that give you the key. I waited a few secs and then went in. It is a triggered load so you MUST do the rest of the quest in order(I didnt even use the key). The quest gives excellent exp as was stated before and decent loot for the ease of it.
I would say that you have to have Amiable faction since that worked for me.
Easiest way to get amiable is turn in the gnoll fangs to the captain.
As for the resulting faction I have done the quesst twice and my faction with the corrupt guards hasnt changed thus far.
I cant find the Lion either

I cant find the lion the door you go in has a secret passage to the aqueducts and i get killed by 2 guys down there as soon as i zone in
Same Problem

Anyone know how i can gain some faction for this quest?
RE: faction
# Sep 14 2000 at 12:10 PM Rating: Default
I am currently doing the hero bracer quest and needed to gain faction with the Steel Warriors. But wnhen I went to get the 10 slot bag the NPCwould not give it to me =( A friend of mine got the sack for me and I filled it, combined and gave to the NPC and nothing!

This is very frustrating as all I need to do is turn in the key and the shackle to finish the hero bracer quest =(
RE: faction
# Feb 08 2001 at 6:37 PM Rating: Default
Kill Deathfist Orcs in Commons and turn the Belts in at the guild near Arena. Turn them also in at FP Milita (4 belts Arena, 2 Belts Milita). This will help alot (you need amiably to warmly fact for this quest).

Always check the faction with FP Milita unless you can cast yourself invis to get past the Guards at West gate.
Solid Quest

This quest is great for newbie characters. It gives excellent XP for completing the whole circuit and the bracers add to AGI. Be aware that 2-3 lvl 4 chars can take the quest lion, and everyone in the group gets good xp for a quick fight. As a level 3 Barb Warrior I started running this quest as soon as I logged in, running around I would find a couple others to join me for a quick fight for good xp would do this quest whenever possible. You can only keep one bracer but the xp is solid.

Alla... why not add a "Faction Required:" tag in the DB, since I'd say 90% of the quests require faction and are not class specific(although would be tough for some quests like the Tacklebox to Faren quest where it's high dubious you need)...

And to Aros -- You need amiable for this quest(in general about 40-50%, if not more of the quests are this way)
