    The fourth Monk Headband Quest.

    You say, 'Hail, Togahn Sorast'

Togahn Sorast says 'Greetings.. I am Second Master Togahn Sorast. I am here to teach the ways of our guild. For our more advanced members, I will give out [headbands] as a reward for their contribution to the clan.'

    You say, 'What headbands?'

Togahn Sorast says 'The Silent Fist Clan gives out colored headbands for various deeds completed by our students. [Phin] gives out the [white, yellow, and orange headbands].. and I give out the [red, purple, and blue headbands].'

    You say, 'What red headbands?'

Togahn Sorast says 'Ah, you think you are skilled enough to earn the red headband of the Silent Fist Clan, _______? Hmmm.. Well, if you can help us find [Brother Dareb], you would certainly deserve the honor of wearing the red headband.'

You say, 'Who is Brother Dareb?'

Togahn Sorast says 'Yes, brother Dareb was last heard from over two weeks ago. He was out in the Plains of South Karana, and then just disappeared. We fear that those vile gnolls fleeing Splitpaw may have captured him or worse. We sent brother Shen to go search the Karanas and look for Dareb over three days ago, but haven't heard from him, either. I fear the worst for both of them, especially if the [Splitpaws] are involved. Please, Genadiele, find and return our lost brothers to us. If they are not alive, bring back their remains so we may give them a proper burial.. and, if it is that evil [Ghanex Drah]'s doing, bring me his head as well, for the honor of the clan. You do this for us, Genadiele, and turn in your orange headband, and I will reward you with the red headband of the Silent Fist. Good luck.'

You say, 'What about the Splitpaws?'

Togahn Sorast says 'The Splitpaws were a large clan of gnolls that lived in a burrow out in South Karana, They have recently been ousted from their home by a new clan of gnolls that are very powerful. We try to stay away from them if we can, for we do not know much about this new breed. The Splitpaws are on the move and now is the only time to strike. If we wait too long, there will be no way to find our brother. Go now my friend, we haven't much time.'

You say, 'What about Ghanex Drah?'

Togahn Sorast says 'Ghanex Drah is ruler of the now fleeing gnolls of Splitpaw. I've heard rumors that he has been dabbling in the dark art of necromancy. Ghanex is looking for more test subjects, no doubt to rebuild his stronghold. The good people of Antonica must put an end to his evil reign soon, or I fear he could grow much more powerful.'

Retrieve the Skulls of Brother Dareb and Brother Shen and the head of Ghanex Drah. Ghanex Drah's head is found by killing him; Brother Dareb's skull is gotten by killing High Shaman Phido; Brother Shen's head is gotten by killing High Shaman Grisok. All three of these gnolls can be found in Southern Karana.

Hand in all three skulls along with your Orange Headband to Togahn Sorast for your Red Headband.

Togahn Sorast says 'Good work, ______, your task is almost completed. You are almost ready for the red headband of the Silent Fist Clan.'
Togahn Sorast says 'Good work, _______, your task is almost completed. You are almost ready for the red headband of the Silent Fist Clan.'
Togahn Sorast says 'Good work, _______, your task is almost completed. You are almost ready for the red headband of the Silent Fist Clan.'
Togahn Sorast says 'We are deeply honored to have such great warrior as part of our Clan. With a proper burial, Shen and Dareb's souls will finally be at peace, and with the death of that vile Ghanex, the plains will be much safer for travelers. It is a great honor to present you, _______, with the red headband of the Silent Fist Clan.'

Your faction standing with Guards of Qeynos got better.
Your faction standing with Ashen Order got better.

I was able to do this quest (with an agnostic human monk starting in Qeynos) at high amiably: +360 or so. I'm not sure what's at work here, but there may be some difference depending on starting rep. I believe the key is to make sure he gives you the full quest dialogue - if so, it seems you're good.

As for the quest spawns themselves, I followed iventheassassin's post below and wanted to note a few additional things.

Both Phido and Grisok are not directly on the cycles mentioned, but are instead spawned by killing certain creatures on those cycles. Both spawn a little bit away from the area their cycles do, so if you're using a less-than-ideal tracker you'll have to move a bit. Also, as iventheassassin mentioned on the page for Grisok, the Ishva Mal is actually not on the Grisok cycle, but on a completely independent one of its own, so if you see it up you can safely ignore it.

The quests from Togahn require just a bit higher faction with Silent Fist than Phin Ensrap did. With Phin, high amiable is okay; with Togahn, it must be at least “kindly”. Literally right when I flipped to “kindly”, he would give me the quest... not before.

In theory, by the time you get to this point, you will have naturally raised your faction (gnoll hunting, side quests, etc.), but be sure to con him and talk to him first. He will eat your items if he doesn’t trust you!

Quest NPCs stopped eating items like 15 years ago. This only happens on the p99/p2002/etc. emulators. Please specify where you're playing, as this gives confusing information for people unfamiliar with differences between p99 and live.

Just doing the monk epic. Each NPC for the quest heads has its own spawn cycle now in 2017. These are about the spawn orders that you most likely will experience. Took me alot hours to get knowledge about them but with my guide you can do this part of the monk epic in just 1-3 hours. Smiley: cool

    1. Ghanex Drah cycle:
Location: South Karana; the skeleton area just south of the bridge to North Karana.

a dwarven skeleton (says "....visit Barger" after being defeated)
    and/or
putrid skeleton (says "....visit Barger" after being defeated)
    Ghanex Drah

    2. High Shaman Phido cycle:
Location: South Karana; kill random mobs in the north end of the zone that roam from east to west and vice versa. They do pass the skeleton pile area south of the bridge. Some of them seem to be placeholders for escaped Splitpaw gnolls but also Ghanex Drah could be one or is the PH.

Ghanex Drah / random mobs in the north
    an escaped Splitpaw Gnoll
    Shaman Lenrel
    High Shaman Phido

    3. Ishva Mal / Grisok cycle:
Location: South Karana; central and south eastern area in a triangulum between Splitpaw lair, zone border east of it, and the hermit house. More than 20 spawn points do exist !

    The Ishva Mal
    a Ishva Lteth gnoll
    Shaman Ren`Rex
    High Shaman Grisok
    Tesch Val Kadvem
    Kurrpok Splitpaw

    How South Karana works...
    # Nov 25 2013 at 8:07 AM Rating: Decent
Ok everyone I am 95% certain on how to get these named gnolls spawn now And I want to share this to save a lot of ppl time. So first you will want at least a level 30 ranger with you to track(150skill). Or create one to kill and loot the pieces to trade. Set tracking to rconsider to see just the grey and green mobs on top. These mobs work in a combination of pops after you kill one. Basic mob (lion, ele, wolf) >> an escaped gnoll >> named gnoll or cyclops >> named gnoll with your loot. Note that all of these have Random spawn locations, so locs wont help until named. Go ahead and start killing Lions Elephants and wolves around NK zone(by the undead area). Go from east to west walls killing everything you can and watch your track Constantly! Look for "an escaped splitpaw gnoll", find it, kill it and watch on track for named gnoll shamans, a lot of the time you wont get them to pop. So just keep killing escaped gnolls until the named shaman pops.

Once you kill "High shaman Lenrel"(grey con to lvl 30) > run straight to Splitpaw, look on track for Phido(Green con to lvl 30). He spawns just south of SP and runs towards Brother Hayle(west wall), he might fight him and die so be quick.
Once you Kill "High Shaman Ren'rex"(grey con to lvl 30) > run south past "hermit" area all the way to south wall by "a treant" mob(attacks him). Girsok(Light blue con) should be on track around there, about +6804, -1476.
I spent a good 5 hours figuring this zone has a mob combo pop spawn to it. I hope this saves people time on monk epic.

    Monk quest
    # Aug 15 2008 at 8:33 PM Rating: Decent
I just did this quest and this is what I did.

    1) Camp the skeleton ruins in the north of the zone near the North Karana entrance. I cleared the camp twice and Ghanex spawned.

    2) Then I searched for an escaped splitpaw gnoll which I found in the north of the zone between the centaur village and the western edge of the zone. I believe he spawned roughly south of the North Karana zone and slightly to the west of the skeleton camp. I think I've seen one in the south as well near the aviak village. I only killed one and Grisok spawned.

    3) Grisok spawned immediately after killing an escaped splitpaw gnoll. He spawned SE of Splitpaw and he was heading east. After killing him, Ren'rex spawned immediately.

    4) Found Ren'rex roaming west between the hermit hut and the aviak village. After killing him, Phido spawned.

    5) At first I couldn't find Phido for about an hour, so I don't know exactly how much time it is before he spawns after killing Ren'rex. Decided to kill an escaped splitpaw gnoll again in the north and found Lenrel who spawned north-northwest of the centaur village. Upon killing him, Phido spawned. I found him NW of Splitpaw just standing there and not roaming. I'm assuming he spawns roughly north of the aviak village and then roams to the north.

I didn't kill any elephants or an undead cyclops, so I don't think those dictate the spawns. Only killed 1 escaped splitpaw and it started the chain of named spawns.

This is an edit: my last post here was of failure and despair. =) Reposted on the Phido page, where Rhoderas posted about his success. I used his method to get the spawn.

After months of camping on and off, trying all of the tips posted on these pages, I tried Rhoderas's method and today it finally worked! I had my ranger killing all of the elephants and escaped Splitpaw gnolls I could find. Lenrel spawned east of the skellie camp heading towards me and I killed him. Immediately, as I saw that there seemed to be a large group in the zone, I ooc'd that I was looking for Phido, and one of their trackers caught him in the SW corner of the zone (by the aviak nest), heading north over the hills on the west side. My ranger (maxed tracking) still can only track about two-thirds to three quarters of the zone from the spot where Lenrel spawned, so I wouldn't have seen him for quite a while if the group in the south hadn't spoken up -- I may have even missed him by running around focusing on more elephants.

Rhoderas had Phido spawn in the NW corner, but I got him from the SW corner -- So if you don't get the spawn on the northside, start moving down to the SW corner following the hills on the west side, and you just may pick him up on track and run right into him . Good luck!

    Despair abd Does Phido disapear
    # Dec 06 2005 at 11:18 AM Rating: Decent
I agree with Groner. I had my monk going through all the steps on this page and in three days couldn't find High Shaman Phido so I gave up for a while and created and levelled a ranger to the point where he could track about 1/4 of the zone.

Repreating steps on this page HS Phido spawned in the hills on the Western edge as people have said. However as I was tracking him and he was third closest NPC I suddenly got "You have lost your target", there were no other players in the zone and he was nowhere near the Splitpaw zone, nor were there any nearby NPCs that I would expect to kill him. It leaves me wondering if his appearances are time limited and that is why he is so difficult to get.

It all makes me think that the monk epic is just not worth it.

I heard that Grisok spawns near Aviak village so went there and saw HS Phido spawn directly West of the village where the terrain turns white/gray. I heard how he was so hard to get that I forgot to do a /loc to get exact location. I still have had no luck in getting Grisok. I've killed any escaped splitpaws, cyclops and undead cyclops and still haven't seen this guy. What is the spawn rate for him and his PH. If I kill escaped splitpaw in the Northern part do I have time to get down near the hermit's place to catch the next spawn?

    # Sep 27 2005 at 10:35 AM Rating: Decent
Is there anyone out there that can give a definative answer on how to get this guy, High Shaman Phido, to pop? I have been in South Karana until I am all but ready to give up on getting my epic. I have even had the help of the guild in we raided the zone and killed for several hours any and all creatures mentioned as placeholders. And had trackers throughout the zone waiting. I have had to hunt this zone in raid as I live on the Firiona Vie Server, therefore all the placeholders are trivial to me.

    HELP!

Grrr... Ok, up to date information.

Ghanex - we all know spawns at the skele camp. If you are over level 20, just kill everything there and he'll pop eventually.

Grisok - was killing escapted gnolls when I found him in SE corner, near Hermit.

Phido - no friggin clue where this guy spawns, but have been clearing skele camp, running west to wall, heading south down wall, cutting over to Paw, slaughtering all gnolls, head east a bit more to see if any escaped are up - and back again. I'm going to try wiping camp, heading east to see about Lenlil (or whatever) and back to skele camp and west wall. If you have on VZ, send Tyekwon a tell, please :)

    RE: Phido
    # Aug 31 2004 at 10:01 AM Rating: Decent
Update to above - THIS JUST IN

    Re: Phido

    1. At Skele camp - only kill EAST most putrid/dwarf skele's - I believe the dwarf skele spawn, which may only pop for 2 secs is the PH for Lenrel or escaped

    2. Having camped here for 2 hours yesterday, saw Lenrel to the East of the camp - on way to raiders, killed him

    3. Escaped gnoll spawned a little farther north of Lenrel just a few minutes later - killed him

    4. On my way down WEST wall, saw Phido HUGGING the wall, heading NORTH - he was just a few clicks north of Paw, HUGGING WEST wall, heading north - and he's fast.

Got head, yeah me. I hope that helps you all.

I just collected all three heads (as of 2nd December 2003) using my bard to track the mobs. Gahnex Drah definitely spawns at the skele camp in the spot previously mentioned (often a putrid skele PH for him at the east side of the camp). Killing him seems to give a chance of an escaped gnoll spawning nearby, usually to the north of the camp I found. Killing that regularly spawned Lenel (spelling?). Killing him did one of three things each time....

    1) Nothing
    2) Spawned Phido very close by (often NW)
    3) Spawned Ren'Rex at the SE corner of the zone, heading towards the Aviak town.

If Ren'Rex spawned, I'd kill him and then any nearby escaped gnolls. 4 out of 5 times I did this, Grisok spawned in the SE corner too. If you haven't got a tracker, I'd stick to the skele spawn and just go for Ghanex as he seemed to take the longest for me.

FYI, Ghanex Drah doesn't always drop the head. I camped him over two days, killed him three times, and the dropped once.

It may be that TLC is involved, though, as the first two times, higher level friends killed him.

    1. On Getting encouraging words. TYhis happened to me as i had on wolf form, so Don't have any shape otrher than your normal shape.

    2. They MUST be done In order, as the previous band is necessary to be handed in to get the next band.

    3. Any one Not conned as threateningly, can do this. I am from freeport, did not kill a single Gnoll, and got ther white headband quest. Try talking the Guild master Before you talk to Phin for first 3 headbands that worked for me. anyway.

    good luck
How to get Ghanex to spawn
    # Feb 15 2003 at 11:38 PM Rating: Excellent
In order to get Ghanex to spawn, all you have to do is kill one of the 'an escaped splitpaw gnolls' that wander around in SK. He'll spawn directly afterward at the skele camp. First time I did this quest with a monk friend of mine and camped for 5 hours. Finally got the head then, but it took forever. Just recently went back and started killing putrids for faction with Priests of Life and saw an escaped wandering by. Whacked him and Ghanex spawned. Did this 3 or 4 times and he always spawned directly afterward.

    good luck, be safe.

I was sitting around up by the aviak city... KFC with my cleric... facing the main chicken town... I was sitting around like the ramp area, a bit further back then most do... because I was medding and one of these guys jumped me. I THINK it was Phido, I remember thinking his name was funny, I also remember trying to cross check for quests using Dareb's Skull... well now I know on a QUEST page is BROTHER Darebs skill. but the item of course does not say brother. I had no idea what it was for. I knew that skull of Jen Thra (sp) was usefull... but only untill I start thinking about making a monk, do I find out what this is for. :P I hope that helps some monkeys, the reason I post is I dont think he ran up on me so much as spawned almost on top of me. if he did run up it was from behind me. I was between KFC and the zone (thats a lot of distance, but im trying to give relivance without guessing a loc) I was near kfc though. and poof. on my head.

    Ghanex Drah spawn
    # Aug 14 2002 at 11:15 AM Rating: Decent
I camped the dwarf and small putrid skels for 2 hours a night 3 nights in a row. No spawn. When I started to kill everything Ghanex Drah spawned in ten miutes, this must have been about time for the small skeleton to spawn because the small putrid skeleton walked up and started attacking me right next to Ghanex Drah.
I do not see how the small ones could be PHs, in my situation.
Thanks for the help on these quests, this one was frustrating. I finally have all 3 heads now.

ok... i've been putting off this particular camp as i heard it was very very dull and at times LONG... however i went last nite and as directed killed the only skelly that spawns right next to tree (eastern side of graveyard/skelly camp) and granex immeadietly popped behind tree and startin runnin south southeastish... grabbed him and whipped soundly. Now if i could only get so lucky with grisok and phido.

I just camped the putrid skellies in SK for faction. He has been spawning once every eq night for several hours now. I have not killed the PH listed on this site. Maybe they changed the PH to one of the putrids in the ruins

okay, a 39(?) bard named Silktones got this figured out and helped me get my last head. Bards get track at 35 btw, I never knew that. Anyway, there are 4 escaped gnolls that roam SK. kill those 4 and either Shaman Ren'rex or Shaman Lenrel will spawn. If you kill Ren'rex, then High Shaman Grisok spawns. And, if you kill Lenrel, High Shaman Phido spawns. It happened just like that for me and took a grand total of 1/2 hour to get the head Phido drops. And, after seeing the pattern, I realized that the ranger in my guild (thanks Kiladian if you ever see this) got Grisok on track almost immediately after we killed shaman ren'rex. hope this helps clear the mistery

Ghanex Drah is an undead gnoll that pops at the undead skellie camp just south of the bridge. He will pop if you kill the dwarf skeleton and / putrid skeletons. But ren'rex and lenrel do not always spawn just from killing the escaped splitpaw gnolls, in my experience it may take several rounds of killing all four. I have been helping the monks in my guild with this quest.
