Captain Rottgrime is located in the evil outpost at +2465, +2150.

    You say, 'Hail, Captain Rottgrime'

Captain Rottgrime has a multitude of cracks and holes in his skull from his many battles. 'Attention, marine!! You will go into battle and fear nothing! You shall prevail over one enemy and then you shall be sent back into battle! We [shall not allow those sarnak to overtake the Danak shipyards]! Is that clear, marine?!!'

You say, 'I shall not allow those sarnaks to overtake the Danak shipyards.'

Captain Rottgrime says 'Stand up straight!! That's correct marine!! YOU shall not allow the sarnak to overtake the shipyards!! Head out to the frontlines, marine!! Kill the berzerkers and return their war braids to me!! For every four, you shall earn your wages!!! Now get to the front, marine!! Move it!! Move it!!'

Hand in 4 x Sarnak War Braid, dropped by "a sarnak berserker".

Captain Rottgrime says 'Keep up the good work, marine.'
Captain Rottgrime says 'Keep up the good work, marine.'
Captain Rottgrime says 'Keep up the good work, marine.'
Captain Rottgrime says 'Great job, marine!! Word of your heroics shall be passed on to the Admiral. If you don't have a shield, then take one. If you do, then get back to the front lines. This is no time for R n' R!! Move it, marine!! Or you'll be pushing Danak till the cockatrice crows!!'

Your faction standing with Venril Sathir has been adjusted by 8.
    You gain experience!!
You receive 2 gold from Captain Rottgrime.

You receive a Guard of the Marines.

What is this showEQ i see below to read your faction. Is this a command or a program?? I am lvl 51 DE and have turned in 175 braids so far and still dubious. this is why I ask I and getting frustrated.

    # Oct 25 2001 at 12:58 AM Rating: Default
Ok, Show Eq does NOT run EQ in a window. ShowEQ is basically a glorified Packet Sniffer. All it does is read the packetes that pass across your network.

To use ShowEQ you must have a seperate computer, running Linux of any flavor (or Unix).

    RE: ShowEQ?
    # Jul 23 2001 at 11:35 AM Rating: Decent
It is a hacker's tool. Used in conjunction with another that makes EQ into a window (instead of full screen) it lets one see all the numbers being passed back and forth from the server to your client.

ie: creature is worth 350 xp
ie: faction just went up 10 pts

    etc...

It's a bannable offense to use it of course, though I don't know how Verant'd know. (and no, I don't use it)
    RE: ShowEQ?

It's bannable offence but undetectable in use.

While I don't know how VI would detect its use, I've been told that it is indeed detectable, its just not legal for VI to use software that would detect its use. Nice web of illegalities, eh? VI says its illegal to use ShowEQ (through the EULA).

I was able to change my Venril Sathir faction by turning in Sarnak Berzarkers War
Braids to Captain Rootgrime. He is just outside of the bank. My faction started as
dubiously, I had screwed my faction up killing ogres in TD. So I had to find a way to
fix my facton. As I was turning in braids I kept track of when my faction changed. It
took 88 braids to get me to Apprehensively, 136 braids to Indifferently, 188 to
    Amiably.

At lvl 34, I get about 3/4 of a blue bubble of exp for doing this quest. If you add in that the Beserkers give you 1/2 to 3/4 of a blue bubble for each solo kill (they all con blue at this level), the exp can really start accumulating fast. I got a full yellow bub in about an hour and 15 minutes. Not too shabby!

If you want to solo, do it by the outpost. If you get into trouble, run for the guards.

Ok people, the real reason to do this quest is for faction. The shield is nice, but most people I think will agree are doing this to get their faction up with the Outpost. There are only two ways, one of them being rather impossible, or just very hard to do.

One, I believe there are three dragons (yes -dragons-) that if you kill, will raise your faction. Well, as I doubt anyone but a GM can solo a dragon by themselves (:P), this is pretty much out of the question. Well, unless you see an organized group attacking one of these dragons and you ask beforehand if you can get a hit in, so you can get faction.

Two, the Sarnak Braid Quest. The invisible handing trick, I'm not sure if it will work. Or the rogue sneaking stuff. I know the skeletal illusions like Call of Bones or the Amulet will help you get to the point where you can do it. I'm a DE Necro, so I'm fine, and until I get my faction up quite high, this is all I'll be doing.

Oh, and there were two people curious as to how to build Indigo Brotherhood faction. You can kill the Halflings in Nektulos Forest. I especially recommend the Deputy and Medic, but they're higher in level, so be careful.

    # Jun 22 2001 at 4:38 AM Rating: Default
The CoB/Lich trick no longer works, they modified the spell months ago so that the illusion doesn't alter faction. Likewise monks can no longer FD and hand them over. Basically unless you are non KOS at the outpost to begin with you'll never be able to do this quest.

I think there's still a way to do the quest, even if you are dead KOS to the NPC :
Charming him might be possible for a 55+ enchanter. Everybody can deal (bank/buying and selling/doing quests) with a charmed NPC.

Umm Ussually if im not mistaken being part of a group will gain faction for all group if one does a quest (kobald molars in paineel affected whole group so im guessing this still works) I group full time with a necro we hunt outside of the fort. we are only 23 & 24 in level so not ready to take the quest yet but my plan is kill the sarnak berserkers, let the necro loot the braids and turn into i stay as near as can w/o aggro we both get faction also may do this with hi lvl friend who can get braids quicker just to get faction sooner ( i hate boating to fp to use bank) if this ability to gain group fgaction no longer exists please let me know
    RE: Faction
    # Jan 15 2002 at 10:36 PM Rating: Decent
    Sorry, no.

    - You share in the faction hits when your group kills something (with one exception, see below).
    - You also share in the XP when your groupmate completes a quest.
    - But you do not share in the faction hits when your groupmate does a quest.

The exception I referred to above is that you must take "positive" action during the battle (hit or debuff the MOB, heal or buff the tank, etc.) in order to get the faction hits. This isn't as unusual as it sounds: as a shaman, I occasionally use all my mana buffing my groupmates BEFORE battle, then med through the battle while the cleric handles the healing duties. In this case, I get XP but not faction.

It increases your base faction, which will apply when you have DE illusion on as well, so yes it affects both.

i dont know what would posess you all to risk going into the outpost to try and give this Captain yer war braids if yur KOS. Just make sure the evil person in group loots the braids, and let him/her turn in the braids while you are still grouped and in zone. Everyone will get the faction.

Correct, the group will get xp but not faction. Although sometimes if you stand close enough you can get faction on other quests so it might work here. Just leaves the problem of getting into the outpost in the first place, ie past normal and undead guards, can't use both invisies at once =)

You *can* use both invis's. Just cast one on yourself, and another person use the F1-F7 to target you and they cast their invis.

Faction is givin to the one that hands them in. Period. No shared faction here, only exp. The exp after handing in 8 braids = slightly less then a half of blue for two people. The other person recieved NO FACTION.

Kill the Halflings in Nektulos forest, there are 3 camps of them and a Leatherfoot deputy wanders back and fort between the 3 camps. The deputy is a bit higher lvl than the other halflings, and so it the Leatherfoot medic that is at the camps occasionally.

The DE dragoons in the Overthere are on a completely different faction. Everything in the outpost are all on Venril Saswhatever faction. This is why they con Apprehensive to a DE necro who the Dragoons in the Nek forest con amiable to. They are in no way connected...though i too am wondering how one could better their faction with the indigo brotherhood.

I think the only NPC's you can kill to raise it are quite tough, mostly dragons. On this site, the ones listed are Erscorpa in WW, Faydeder in TD, Xygoz in VP, and a couple others. I know there are more that aren't listed, but I can't think of them now. I'll ask around, and try to remember the others, then I'll post 'em here. Sorry can't remember them now. This is one of the only quests you can do, though. It sucks because it seems like almost every mob in Kunark/Velious is anti-Venril faction; which is almost true:-P Refresher on the VS lore would be appreciated, anyone, by the way. Anyway, doubt it, but hope that helped some. Be safe.

    Faction Rate
    # Mar 01 2001 at 8:38 AM Rating: Excellent
Hail! I am running showEQ. It displays faction as a numerical value with the following numbers:

    100 amibly
    0 indiff
    0 to -500 dubiously
    -1000 ready to attack

Returning 4 braids increases your faction for exactly 8 points.
So going from dub to indiff takes about 50 times doing the quest.

From indiff to amibly it takes about 12 times giving 4 braids.
So be ready to mass-kill berzerkers hehehe.
Having showeq running helps alot with your moral because you actually see something improve as you return braids. Verrant should implement more steps between dub and indiff, like very dubiously, dub, a bit, slightly...
    RE: Faction Rate
    # May 29 2001 at 3:44 PM Rating: Default
    You said:
    100 amibly
    0 indiff
    0 to -500 dubiously
    -1000 ready to attack

    That is not entirely true....

Because, between inddif and dubious is 'apprehensive'.. so dubious should be something between -200 to -500, or something thereabouts..

I think ready to attack can be as low at -2000, though.

It would be nice to see an actual table of each con level and the corresponding faction point score requirement.

Faction, I think varies from a 1000 point scale to a 6000 point scale depending on faction/location. -500-0-500; -3000-0-3000. Quests are generally worth 2 points, while normal kills are worth one. This of course varies sometimes but is held as a general rule. In some cases, due to race/class/deity, ally is unattainable. The size, in terms of # of faction points needed to change, of each of the faction zones gets gradually larger as you go towards indifferently. This may be outdated information, so don't rely on it, but that's what I went by. Be safe, y'all. Laterz.

If u can sneak, you can do this. All u gotta do is sneak in past the east entrance golem, make sure no Dragoons are around (they just weren't when did it), and hug the wall to the left, there are the skelies. Get someone in the outpost to help you. Wait until Captain Rottgrime has moved to one of his two positions, and then right after, the friend is to hail the captain from behind, over and over and over. Hugging the wall, sneak behind the marines. The captain should be facing the same way as the marines now, as your friend is hailing him. walk up close behind the marines, and if u just barely line up with them, not too far to aggro them (this should be easy for those who have experimented with sneak), u can REACH Rottgrime! The hailing and captain responses might cause laggy giving, but hey it works. He does NOT turn around. The idea of waiting until he changes positions is that he won't switch again while you're giving him all the braids. He COULD see you this way, if the friend is unable to get his attention right away. If you are monk like me, be prepared to feign. I have so far turned in 6 sets of 4, died once learning the "switching positions" thing, but all the exp from the braids mostly made up for it. So if you are persistant enough and willing to risk dying (hey, the risk is there, you're in an evil outpost) u can do it! I am told that 40 braids will give u faction change, give or take depending on if you've killed Timorous Deep ogres, etc... HOPE THIS HELPS!!

It looks OK, but not fantastic. It's a big stone colored hammer, although if you are a necro people look at you funny when they see you carrying a hammer around :)

However, the real reason to get it is for the effect. If you are level 50 or higher it procs a gate to inside the ship in Overthere. I guess they made it a proc'ing thing rather than a right click effect, so that you couldn't use it to quickly escape trouble. If I want to go to Overthere I go starting a newbie mob and after a few whacks, poof, I'm in the ship's hull in Overthere. In practice what it means is I can be bound far from a Bank, but use the one in Overthere whenever I want. Unfortunately it's not a good deal to buy or sell there because of the prices, but I can put the goodies in the Bank for later, get rid of my coin, and then gate right back to the action.

#Anonymous, Posted: Dec 17 2000 at 7:46 AM, Rating: Sub-Default, (Expand Post) I'm a lvl 31 Iksar shaman, and when I was lost amidst the hell of my previous lvl, I thought it'd be a good idea to quest for a better shield. Since my SBS from crushbone was kinda getting old and rusty. Well this quest seemed to tickle my fancy for a while, until I read up on the Paw of Opolla quest. OH MY GOD did my jaw drop. The Paw of Opolla gives +9wis (YAHOO!) and if it's the AC you're concerned about, the +9ac is better than the sheild and the +9agil gives you a bit more AC to boot. Both quests can be done fairly easily if you're around lvl 30. However, I didn't want to risk the KOS status of me in Overthere, so a good friend of mine quested with me. He was a lvl 32 enchanter at that point. And us two alone completed the Paw of Opolla quest in a mere 3 days of playing from 10pm to 5am. The most annoying part was camping the Fungus Mutant for one of those days without getting the damn rare drop that you need for the gold ring. But non the less, we were very glad to get out of there when I saw the last item that I needed. All in all this quest is a lot more fun. Especially because most of the mobs in Befallen, Blackburrow, and Upper Guk won't dare aggro to a lvl 30 shaman. Hehe and I did enjoy killing that human npc in the Qeynos catacombs, aswell as some other gtm npcs outside of Qeynos. Hey, I'm KOS anyways, so who cares about the faction hits.

Ok, I tried to Sneak/Camo up to this guy with my lvl 38 Human Ranger. I tried it twice. Both times, I got behind the guy. The first time, my friend hailed the guy and turned towards him and he saw me through my camo. The marines didnt. The 2nd time, again, i got behind the guy and was about to hand him 1 braid and he turned to his right to do his pathing procedure walk and he saw my camo again =( But so far, from going behind and standing there, he hasn't seen me unless he turns a bit. BTW I have practiced this: Your invis does NOT break when you trade something! I traded with NPC's before while camo'd.

But now I am questioning if I should bother with this quest, cause now apparently people conning DUBIOUS can't gain faction with the outpost! I want to know if this is true so I dont have to bug another cleric for a 90% EXP Rez again. If it is, then gaining faction with the outpost would be nice so I won't have to run to FV all the time just to use the bank.

Although it is possible that they fixed this, I doubt it. There has been a bug whereby trading with an NPC ACTUALLY drops you invis/camo, but the symbol on your screen does not drop. Killed me in North Karanas doing the GLS quest (before I found out Synthan in Oasis takes the GLS and LS).
If they fix it my strong opinion is that they simply would have removed the invis symbol. because they want camo to drop for transactions, just like buying/selling. So be very careful before relying on the fact that you still think you are invis. Hint - you can always hit F9 once or twice to find out if you truly are invis, if you have see invis up and you are invis your name has parenthesis around it, if you cannot see invis and you are invis then you cannot see yourself.
    Can Iksars do this quest?

This was already asked before, but since I could find no answer...
I'm an iksar monk, and since I need to do the shackle quest, i need to have good fation with Tektite. A GM told me that raising the faction with Venril Sathir should be the way to go, but it still seems impossible to do this quest, since Rottgrime should probably be KOS to me...
Does anyone knows of a way to do this quest?

Tektite will give you the shackle quest item if you sneek behind his back and don't hail or speek with him. You gain indifferent con by sneeking behind mobs and npc.

captain rottgrime has like 8 soldiers standing in front of him so sneaking behind him is impossible. The only way for a non-necro iksar to do it is to get a amulet of necropotence and go to skeley form for the quest.
