Warden Avelyn can be found on a hill a little south west of Firiona Vie's tent (location -64.46, 2174.56, 197.43). Note: She can roam around a bit.

    You say, 'Hail, Warden Avelyn'

Warden Avelyn says 'Welcome, ______. Are you here to help our [efforts] against the dark elven army?'

    You say, 'What efforts?'

Warden Avelyn says 'While others in the camp may have more glorious endeavors for you, I would ask you to help me in something more outside the immediate threat here in the forest. As you may know, the Army of Obliteration has taken control of all of the Commonlands. While there they have commited untold numbers of [atrocities]. No person, or even animal should be subject to such treatment!'

    You say, 'What atrocities?'

Warden Avelyn says 'From what I have heard, the dark elves are using evil enchantments to warp the minds and bodies of the animals into a vicious and deadly abomination. We must [destroy] these creatures and find a way to prevent this from happening to any of those that remain.'

You say, 'I will destroy them.'

Warden Avelyn says 'I need you to sneak into the Commonlands and seek these creatures out. As you destroy them see if you can collect any samples of the enchantments being used against them. I only hope we can use those samples to create some way of protecting the animals against the dark elves.'

You have been assigned the task 'Purging the Corruption'.

Gather samples of whatever is causing the animals' corruption 0/4 (Old Commonlands)

The items you're looking for are called Essence of Corruption. And they drop of the corrupted animals in Old Commonlands. Be careful as the animals are social and the dark elves will also assist them. These animals can change from their low level forms to higher level (75), and back:

    a cursed venomfang
    a mutated death beetle
    a soulrend panther
    an enraged kodiak

Return the essence of corruption samples to Warden Avelyn 0/4 (Bloody Kithicor)

These samples should help in the research to create an method of enchanting the animals against this sort of abuse.

Got 12 drops in 1 hour

My group got 12 drops in 1 hour by camping 1 purple cloud area. Kill all the grey con mobs in the area except the beetles and kodiaks, you'll want to pull those into the edge of the cloud and kill them after they transform.

Also, we never once got any type of spider or cat mob to transform.

Can attest to what is said below. Got mostly enraged kodiaks with an occasional mutated beetle. Drop rate was about 1 in 10. Do not kill the summoners, they need to be up to change the bears as they wander through.

The only thing I would add is to kill every other animal you see to get more bears spawning in the zone. I made a quick macro:

    /tar enraged
    /tar mutated

I hit that once every 30 seconds or so to see if a target had spawned while killing spiders, snakes, cats and wolves.

I wasn't really sure where to kill as I didn't find any of these purple clouds (I believe you need spell particles on for all spells in the options) but found a spot near the dark elf summoners where enraged kodiaks just kept roaming right over at a good pace. n10, p275. The bears that kept roaming to that spot would change to enraged kodiaks (or already be enraged upon approach). The drop rate on the quest item seems to be about 10%.

Seeing a lot of conflicting info here, including the main description. You don't don't need 1 Essence from each of the 4 animals listed, just 4 from any of the big/mutated animals. Spent a couple hours in the zone, only big bears and beetles were spawned. Tried pulling the low-level spiders and pumas into the purple clouds as mentioned to no avail. I just killed more kodiaks and looted the other 2 Essences I needed. Worked like a charm.

If you have no tracker this is what you can do.

Any kodiak that comes in touch with the summoners purple cloud turns into Enraged Kodiak.
Any beetle that comes in touch with the summoners purple cloud turns into mutated death beetle,
Not sure about the cursed venomfang ( its not a giant spider). maybe a spiderling ?
Also tried different wolves, lions but couldnt get a soulrend panther

Anyway the summoners don't actually summon anything, it's the purple cloud around them that changes the normal mobs into higher lvl ones.

I just pulled the lower lvl versions into the clouds edge and they turned, killed them on outer rim of the cloud. The summoners add aggro seems limited range.

And yes , the droprate is terrible , about 1 out of 6 mobs probably

Please remove "kill the corrupted animals" from this as there are no animals named corrupted in the zone.

    Edited, Jul 19th 2009 7:23am by Opalescentcube
it was a general term for mobs with very distinct names

The term "corrupted animals" was never meant in such a general terminology to specify the exact name(s) of the animals one would seek. Many quest write ups are not spelled out in absolute detail as some still like the pleasure of figuring out some part of the process to success. But if you still want the names of the mobs you seek click on the item Essence of Corruption for more details.

    [EDITED WITH SOME ANSWERS}]

Killed corrupted (etc...) animals near the summoner ring near befallen for several hours. I didn't see a single drop for this quest. I killed over 50 mobs. I was in the non-instanced version of Old Commonlands. A couple of questions:

    1) Do these Essence of Corruption drop in both the instanced and non-instanced versions of the zone?

[Yes, although the ones that drop in the instances don't update quest]

    2) If the Essences drop in the instanced versions, do they count for quest updates?

    [NO]

    3) If the Essences drop in the instanced versions, do they drop more readily than in the non-instanced zone?

    4) Has anyone else had similar experiences with a heinous drop-rate?

[I went back again and camped the spot near befallen and got 4 drops in 30 minutes. Appears to be merely a run of bad luck on my earlier try.]

    Thank you.

Add this into your maps file and it will show a label named "Summoners" on your map and make sure you pull the animals away from the summons because they will assist the mob.

For those who are /loc challenged this loc is down by the befallen zi. There is a grp of summoners just to the NE. A lot of exp mobs roam by here, but the drop rate is still pretty uncommon for me.

Ok, after spending quite a few rather annoyed hours doing this quest, I followed some advice from a friend and was done in 15 minutes.

Go to -650,550 and just sit there. the summoners right there pop out mobs fairly fast, kill them as they leave, drop rate is about 50%.

The other mobs around the zone's drop rate is somewhere between 5-10%.

I spent literally 3-4 hours tracking and killing them constantly, and I got 1 single essence. I went to this camp and got 3 essences out of the next 5 mobs and was done ^.^

It appears that if you hang around the Obliteration Summoners they are the ones that spawn the "corrupted" versions of the mob. Once they spawn one, you can aggro and kill within enough time so that the mob doesn't despawn as a regular. Also, there's plenty of them around

This is exact name of the quest. You can not preloot the essences, I tried.

Gather samples of whatever is causing the animals' corruption 0/4 Old Commonlands

Return the essence of corruption to Warden Avelyn 0/4

Drops off an enraged kodiak, a soulrend panther, a cursed venomfang, a mutated death beetle at least

    Fairly common drop

    # Dec 13 2008 at 6:35 PM Rating: Decent
I have to say, I'm not finding them to be a particularly common drop. More like one in ten. And far too often, they're changing back into their common form while I'm killing them, which results in no XP and no drop.

    Oh well.

Being a druid, I am trying to track the newest ones (top of the track list) in hopes they are more likely to stay in their monster form for a while. And I'm hunting near the tunnel, since other places an Obliteration patrol is likely to wander by and assist the monster.

The drops you need for this task are called "essence of corruption".

These drop from a cursed venomfang, possibly from a mutated deathbeetle.

All the animals that give xp can drop it. I got mine from an enraged kodiak and soulrend panther. The animals also change into lower con mobs like a woodland lion, had one change on me while I was tracking it and one changed while I was killing. I got most of mine around the Befallen ent.
