This task begins with Raxtor Darkpaw in the far southwest of Oceangreen Hills (at the Darkpaw camp). In order to request this task, you must first have completed three other Darkpaw tasks:

    "Summary Execution"
    "Invading the Invaders"
"What Evil Lurks in the Heart of Gnolls?"

    You say, 'Hail, Raxtor Darkpaw'

Raxtor Darkpaw says 'Yip! You help Darkpaw, that good? I trust you. [Darkpaw clan] trusts you, bark! Not like that smelly Bayle. He come here says he help Darkpaw, but he think helping humans better. You come to help at good time. Blackburrow clan insane! They steal our pups! Darkpaw clan too small now, need you to help get pups back. Yip! You help, [yes]?'

    You say, 'The Darkpaw clan?'

Raxtor Darkpaw says 'Bark! Darkpaw clan smartest gnoll clan! We not need angry, frothy mouth killing to get what clan need. We smart. We trade. We make beer! Yip! Trade for everything we need. But now the [smelly Blackburrow] clan take home, kill many Darkpaw. We not know why. Bark!'

    You say, 'Smelly Blackburrow?'

Raxtor Darkpaw says 'Yip! Raxtor not want to talk about smelly Blackburrow clan. They not wander hills and plains any more. They come and take Darkpaw home. Some day Darkpaw get home back. Teach Blackburrow that they ruin their own lands, they not ruin ours! Bark!'

You say, 'I can help, yes'

    Raxtor Darkpaw says 'Bark!'

You have been assigned the task 'Freedom!'.

Raxtor Darkpaw has asked you to search the depths of Blackburrow for their missing pups. It seems several of them have vanished recently while learning to hunt near the ancient mine. The only clue anyone has found was a piece of a letter to a shaman, once thought to be dead, named Kregak.

Search for clues about the missing Darkpaw pups within Blackburrow 0/1 (Blackburrow)

Grand Mystic Kegrak can be found patrolling around the area at the bottom of the waterfall.

Grand Mystic Kegrak has been slain by _____!
Grand Mystic Kegrak's corpse snarls in defiance and falls to the ground.

Loot "Orders from Grohlok the Tyrant".

Free the Captured Darkpaw pups 0/8 (Blackburrow)

Upon Kegrak's death, Captured Darkpaw Pups will spawn, along with several "an enraged gnoll slaver".

    These are in two locations:

    - The old "Green Room" past the snake pit (approximately 400.07, -311.03, -57.64).
    - And an adjacent large room (approximately 82.82, -278.85, -69.56).

Killing all the slavers guarding the Pups causes the pups to run away and update your task. No interaction with the Pups was necessary.

    Upon freeing the final pup:

Grohlok the Tyrant shouts 'The master's plans must NOT be delayed!'
Your task 'Freedom!' has been updated.

Kill Grohok the Tyrant 0/1 (Blackburrow)

Grohlok the Tyrant spawns at 101.01, -140.80, -69.20. He may auto-aggro after a short period of time, so be prepared.

At approximately 50% health Grohlok becomes invulnerable:

Grohlok the Tyrant summons allies to his side and then falls into a deep trance-like state.

A single "a gnarl shaman" spawned directly on top of Grohlok.

    One minute after becoming invulnerable:

Grohlok the Tyrant awakens from his trance, ready to fight!

Grohlok had returned to full health, but all debuffs remain in place.

    At approximately 30% health:

Grohlok the Tyrant summons allies to his side and then falls into a deep trance-like state.

    ...And shortly after:

Grohlok the Tyrant awakens from his trance, ready to fight!

Once again, Grohlok is at full health but long term debuffs are still active.

Grohlok the Tyrant has been slain by _____!
Your task 'Freedom!' has been updated.

Report back to Raxtor Darkpaw 0/1 (Oceangreen Hills)

    You say, 'Hail, Raxtor Darkpaw'
Your task 'Freedom!' has been updated.

Raxtor's face turns ashen and grim at the news of the threat living within Blackburrow. He thanks you for rescuing the pups and suggests they may need further assistance in the near future.

Your faction standing with Cirtan, Bayle's Herald got better.
You have successfully been granted your reward for: Freedom!

    Reward:
    Timeshear Purple Fragment Dena
    30 Chronobines
    Faction

    Loot from other named:

    Axeweaver

    Battered Gnoll Shield
    Gnoll's Honor Medal

    Blackburrow Nightstalker
    Crudely Etched Ring
    Gnollface Mask
    Nightstalker's Clandestine Ring

    Mundunugu Rawl

    Earring of the Mundunugu
    Shawl of Dreadwishes
    Shawl of Warwishes

Completion of this task allows you to request the next in the series, "Beat the Blackburrow Boss" (essential for Oceangreen theme progression completion).

Once you've completed the Blackburrow task series, you can request this again any time by saying "not be crazy."

Carefull not to over dps Grohlok the Tyrant. If you do to much damage before hes gone in to his trance he will dye and not respawn and task will not update.

The "Kill Grohlok the Tyrant" is working now but it was changed a bit. Twice during the fight, he'll go into a "trance" where he summons two adds each time. He no longer regens to full health during his "trance".

Im good up until Grohlok. I kill him down, he goes into trance and it says he summons allies but none appear. After a bit of waiting he wakes up and shortly after repeats the trance bit and again fails to summon anything. I repeated that 8 times and cant beat him because he always heals to 100% while tranced.

I get the same result. Can beat him down to 70%, no mob is summoned and then he regens to 100%. Did this for 30 minutes (at least a dozen times beating him to 79%) and always the same results. Can pretty much count on Sony breaking several things when they try to make a change to a task like this. The quality control is pathetic. I think they only test the new changes and not test to make sure they didn't break anything else.

    - Grohlok no longer regenerates while idle. He will regain full HP if the event resets, though.

noob boxer here, 81 rog/77 wiz boxed this with j5 warr/clr easy. i ended up evac'ing twice and running back but the mobs you kill dont respawn. nothing special/out of the ordinary as you blaze a trail to him. Grohlok spawns a shammy(normal 'enraged') when you get him to 50% health then he regens back to 100 and you fight him back down to 30% and he spawned a light blue normal 'enraged mystic'. By the time i got back to him he had regened to 80% and i burned him down- task complete.

Just finished this tonight 2 boxing 80 rogue and enchanter with J1 merc healer and tank. I lev'd to bottom of pit avoiding see invis mobs for my enchanter. Finished quest no problem just took my time. Chanter gated and I was running to the top with rog and found the Blackburrow Nightstalker named. Popped cleric merc and Lithe discipline dropped him no problem. That mob also can drop Nightstalker's Clandestine Band. Alla link https://everquest.allakhazam.com/db/item.html?item=78971

I read the posts below but still took quite awhile to find the slaver area; and where Grand Mystic Kegrak would spawn so I thought I would include my 2 cp.

My box was 85 necro, 80 SK and a 77 Shammy. From ZI, I hugged the left wall to the tree trap. There were reavers (who see std. invis) pathing back and forth near the tree. I stepped in the tree and floated down to the room below. There is one Gnoll Shaman in the room but is out of aggro range and he doesn't see invis.

Took the first opening on the left, hugging the left wall, clearing 4 mobs to the door. (There is a mob behind the door that will see invis). Door leads to snake pit room. Note: non-instanced zone has snakes in the pit. Instanced does not.

Down in the snake pit, there is an opening to the right with a ramp that will lead to the Slavers and Grohlok the Tyrant.
Across the snake pit, there is a door to the North, this leads to Grand Mystic Kegrak.

I wanted to clear regular mobs first so entered the pit, went up the ramp. On the left there is dias with a torch and two mobs. Standing on the dias looking South there is a larger cavern. This is where Grohlok the Tyrant will eventually spawn. Cleared all mobs in this general area.

To the NE and SE of the dias are two slaver rooms. The SE room has a crack running South that leads to a passage running East West. There is a door in front of you but I didn't go in. Go left (East) which leads up to the Red Axe room protected by invisble barrier and guarded by a pair of Burly Guards. I cleared all mobs up here.

Back to snake pit, exiting through door at the North. Turn right, head down the wooden stairs. There is a platform with a pair of normal mobs on the left that do not see invis. Jump into the water, swim down and find a short tunnel that leads to a pool. This is where the short waterfall is that is referenced by other posters. Carefull on the ramp leading out of the pool. There is a pair of mobs that see invis. Pull those and go up the ramp. Clear mobs nearby. At the top of the waterfall is a ledge with two mobs. Grand Mystic Kegrak paths around the underground lake to the ledge above the waterfall. Clear all mobs then take Kegrak, looting the orders to spawn the Slavers. Go back in the pool, swim back through the tunnel. Invis, take ladder to ledge, go back up the wooden stairs through the snake pit to the dias.

I setup on the dias and cleared the NE and SE rooms of slavers freeing the required 8 pups but no Tyrant? Remembering another posters comment, I went to the Red Axe room and pet pulled a pair of slavers from there. When they died, then I saw the text and knew that the Tyrant had spawned back near the dias. I tried to keep his adds rooted but I wiped killing one add. Rezzed and came right back killed the Tyrant and the last add. Finished the task with ~ 30 mins to spare.

For Raxtor #2, Beat the Boss, you'll come back to the Red Axe room for the Clan Chief. Gnarl Sawbones room is to the left of the ramp leading out of the pool down by the waterfall. This should go fast now that you know where to go.

This was EXTREMELY helpful. We did this with a 78 Necro (clr merc), 78 Shm (war), and 76 War (wiz) last night. The only point of clarification was that Grohlok the Tyrant spawned and paths between the slave room back up through aforementioned small crack.

Ditto on the pathing bugs mentioned earlier. Our party was: 80 druid, My tank Merc, 86 mage, his T1 healer, 80 monk, his T1 merc. It was painful at best trying to attack the slaver room from the direction of the rope bridge... we had more success dropping in from the tree trap and fighting our way in from behind. Hope that helps someone!

The SOD progression page on here details everything you need to do from a question perspecitve. The post below provide good details on strategies, what I hope to share is making sure you have a solid group to take this on or you will wind up hating a lot more than the gnolls.

Avoid grouping with players who tend to mow down Oceangreen trash mobs using only zerk tactics. This will get your group wiped before you get out of the zone in tunnel.

Avoid grouping with pure int classes that are prone to getting nuke agro. This will frustrate your healers.

Avoid grouping with hybrid/priest classes that dont' take full advantage of spell haste.

How do you know what kind of group you got? As a warm up, take your group down to Bertox's crypt in Oceangreen Village. If your group can hold their own in this small zone then changes are good that you got a competitive group for the mission.

If it's yoour first time in Oceangreen's Blackburrow, then going with a dungeon crawl strategy would be the best approach. Having a scout who has done this mission a few times before, as a scout (guide), will help a lot as they can minimize the backtracking and redundancy errors.

One you zone in for the first time and look at your map, you will understand why having a solid group of first timers is imperative. It will also explain why having a guide/scout makes a huge help.

If you have a group of high level (83+) players, then chances are good that this will be an easy part of your progression.

I happened to read this post today and though I realize that it is quite old. It definitely made me smile.

In general, this is an extremely naive and unilateral treatise on how to choose groups in Everquest. While it provides a bit of humorous nostalgia, it is presented roughly a decade too late. I can only assume that the poster has not been playing EQ since its inception (and also has an overrated since of his own skill as the post is such a lump of common sense that only a dullard would find it enlightening).

In short, it provides some farcical entertainment but no actual value.

PS - it also provides a great example of why kids should stay in school and learn the proper usage of "got" and "have". Sad.

Cool post. You use a lot of big words like dullard, farcical and inception. However could you explain to me what you mean by ''and also have an overrated since of his own skill''? Or did you mean to say ''sense''? Yeah, I think you did, you pompous ***.

I mistakely cleared the pups rooms as other had described - but there were no pups since I did not get the named at the very bottom of the waterfall yet.

So I cleared the trash from the pup rooms. Then went down to snake room (big spikes) took a right through a door and down several ramps - headed down to a pond. Swan from pond via underwater passage, came up where named was wandering, Killed named - and then went back up the way I had come down - and all pups and slavers had spawned. So you can clear the fighting area first.

I received this Mission WITHOUT EVER completing Send the Message. I've never even killed a named in Blackburrow. I have done the other tasks, though, and was at ally with the other quest giving named gnolls and dubious with Raxtor Darkpaw and the regular Darkpaw gnolls. I've spent a fair bit of time in BB killing the Wraxt gnolls getting faction from them.

For our group of 80 War, 80 Ench, 78 Cleric, 78 Nec and a fighter and cleric merc it went like this.

We leved down the large pit with the waterfall to the rope bridge and took out the mob behind the door.

Then moved down to the intersection and killed the wanderer which comes out of the first pup room on the left. Do not stand too close to the closed door on the right or mobs will argo.

Took out the 2 burly gnols which were straight ahead guarding the warded entrance. These are the mobs with the axes circling over their heads and could not be pacified or mezed.

Started pulling the pup room using ench pacify and had the pathing problems mention by others. The mobs ran the long way around and trained 12+ mobs. We then stacked both normal and undead invisibility on all but the cleric and went into the pup room and out the other end, keeping to the right we found an empty hallway between the first pup room and the second pup room. From this hallway we took out the only undead mob (reaver) which allowed the cleric to invis and join us.

After clearing out the area between the two rooms we could start clearing out the pup rooms.

When each guard was killed a pup or two would leave. A few minutes of killing the last guard, Grohlok the Tyrant popped at the first intersection. We pulled him into the first pup room and finished the quest.

    Hope this helps

I've killed the slavers, the pups are freed, my task updated, it says my task is now to kill Grohlok, but Grohlok has neither shouted to me nor appeared. This is the second time I've tried the mission with the same results.

The only strange thing is I still see two pups and 4 slavers on track, they must be someplace outside of the two main rooms. Any tips would be appreciated, I want to complete this thing after doing everything but the boss twice!

Should list that it varies, not say it's a fixed 30. Probably calculated the same way TBS missions are in terms of currency.
