This shared task (1-6 players) begins with Captain Hiran Tillin in Oceangreen Hills. You must have completed the task "Familiarity is the Key" in order to request it.

You say, 'Hail, Captain Hiran Tillin'

Captain Hiran Tillin grins at you mirthlessly. 'If Bronal sent you, he must have found that you could be of some use. You should be proud! Not many are able to meet his stringent expectations. I hear also that you have been of some assistance to our civilian friends Tabron and Garvin. While your goodwill is appreciated, there is a great deal more [work] to be done. Satisfy me and you may yet earn an [audience] with the man himself.'

    You say, 'Work?'

Captain Hiran Tillin says 'The Bertoxxulous worshippers are becoming bolder and more dangerous. I have an important task for you, if you can scrounge up a few allies. This isn't something I can send you on alone. I won't send you on a suicide mission.'

You have been assigned the task 'Stop the Contamination'.

You must stop most of the invaders to prove to them that they can not succeed in the future. If too much of the village's supplies are poisoned, or any of the four Irregular guards or villagers are killed, your mission will fail.

Cult of Bertoxxulous infiltrators found a way into Oceangreen Village past the guards. They have already successfully poisoned some of the villager's food, and they have very little to spare. Captain Tillin has asked you to stop them before the supplies are contaminated. Kill as many of them as you can to convince them that this current plan of theirs will not work.

Unfortunately because of the trouble the day guards have been forced to stay on watch over night, fearing that some sort of attack may result during a shift change, either on the fortress or the village. So those folks are weary. They will intercept any enemies they see, but they will also shout for help.

Such failure may just mean the end of Bayle's efforts here, not to mention the lives of the villagers.

Speak with Acolyte Koel 0/1 (Oceangreen Hills)

Hail Acolyte Koel (next to Hiran) to port into an instanced zone.

    You say, 'Hail, Acolyte Koel'

Acolyte Koel says 'Good luck to you!'

    LOADING, PLEASE WAIT...
    You have entered Oceangreen Village.

You appear at the town "square" (as established in Tillin's first task). Speaking with Billik activates the sequence.

Speak with Billik Broadwake 0/1 (Oceangreen Village)

Billik is located near the instance zone-in.

Keep the stores, villagers and supplies safe 0/1 (Oceangreen Village)

You'll need to fend off several waves of mobs (about 12 waves) which come two at a time every 2-5 minutes or so. Having a tracker is a good idea for this, as you may need to seek out the mobs. Most spawns seem to be by the ocean while some were north and south of the village by bushes or rocks.

If you don't find and kill the waves (or at least keep them distracted by training them around -- apparently you don't have to actually kill them), the mobs will attack the villagers. The villagers will fight back, but if too many die or you die, you lose. Note that the 'friendly' mobs can be healed with player spells.

    Mobs you'll encounter:
a servant of Bertoxxulous (common spawn)
    a Bertoxxulian plaguebearer
    a Bertoxxulian Scablord (uncommon spawn)
a bentwing plaguefly (rare loot-dropping named, drops Bentwing, Fetid Sash, Foulblood Sash, Tsetsian Leg)

Soon after the final wave spawns, you'll see this:

Arch Priest Cronkle shouts 'I grow weary of these games! You so-called Irregulars have become a thorn, and I shall pluck you! Prepare to bow your heads to me!'

Arch Priest Cronkle shouts 'Enough skulking in the night! I am here, and I shall bring to you the gifts of plague! You shall know the power of disease like a lover's kiss, and within its passion you shall be consumed!'

Scumlord Heyanti shouts 'Cronkle! Return to the temple immediately! Your careless behavior will not be tolerated!'

Arch Priest Cronkle shouts 'I have work to do here. Work that you are too cowardly to pursue! When I'm done, I will return, but not before then!'

Scumlord Heyanti shouts 'You will not put our plans at risk! You, of all people, know who I am and what I will do to you if you do not return immediately. You decide: the life of an Arch Priest or an eternity as a sacrifice. Make your decision in one minute, or I will make it for you.'

Arch Priest Cronkle shouts 'I will return, fools. I shall bring a plague of death upon you and Bayle's Irregulars shall be nothing but a memory!'

Your task 'Stop the Contamination' has been updated.

This despawns any remaining mob waves that happen to be alive still.

    In the event you fail:

Billik Broadwake shouts 'No! They've gotten to the supplies! It will all have to be burned. We may have to abandon this place and try to escape overland now.'

Your shared task, 'Stop the Contamination', has ended.

Speak with Billik Broadwake 0/1 (Oceangreen Village)

    You say, 'Hail, Billik Broadwake'

Billik Broadwake says 'Thank you for your help. I can trigger the magic that will send you back to the [keep] when you're ready.'

You say, 'Send me back to the keep'

    LOADING, PLEASE WAIT...
    You have entered Oceangreen Hills.

Report to Captain Hiran Tillan 0/1 (Oceangreen Hills)

Hail the Captain for task completion.

Total time in zone was just over 23 minutes tracking mobs as soon as they spawned.

This just gives you an idea of the time investment for those coming back to it on progression servers.

It isn't all that tough to do if you don't have a tracker, if you understand a few things about this task. First off, think of it and the mission after it as a tower defense game rather than your typical Everquest task. Secondly, the theme of this mission is stealth.

By which I mean the mobs spawn invised and try to sneak into the village. They and the villagers/guards are not KOS to each other either for a reason I'll explain in a bit. The mobs spawn with Vampyre Invisibility on them so if you don't have a way to see invisible NPCs you will have a much harder time intercepting them. They linger at their spawn point for a little bit before beginning to move to their destination. On their route any time they encounter a village NPC they fire off Terror of the Unknown which breaks their invisibility and causes all villagers hit with it to go running. In addition to the villagers fleeing, which you can see, they emote that they are in terror. The mob then casts Vampyre Invisibility again and continues its mission. Because of the fear effect if you're getting the "supplies are being poisoned" message and you enter a building to find there are friendly NPCs you know you're in the wrong place and can move on.

This is why the villagers are not KOS to Cronkle's forces in this mission. They can run out to where the priest and his posse are parked so they aren't hostile to each other so you don't get a big headache trying to manage a brawl you don't want or need.

Some of the mobs are undead and thus can be easily detected via Sense the Dead (bet you forgot that spell even existed, didn't you?) with the caveat that the normal mobs for the Oceangreen Village zone are up, save the rares. Thus you need to be aware that skeletons and cadavers are false positives. Invading mobs do not start spawning until you hail Billik so you can clear the area immediately north of the village if you need to. Unfortunately it is random whether you get live or undead spawns in each wave so stay on your toes.

If you have a pet move them towards the shoreline off to one side of the village and put them on GUARD. Pets on Guard automatically face the closest hostile NPC. Thus your pet can be an invaluable set of eyes alerting you to a spawn or an invisible enemy moving through the village.

Since mobs can spawn anywhere, including inside houses, I strongly suggest using a tracker, which makes this pretty easy.

I had finished the Familiarity quest with my 78 ROG. Then I got this one. I shared the task with my 85 WAR and 85 Shammy. We all went in to speak with Billik and he went through his dialog. Then... nothing. Quest notes still say i need to speak with Billik. What gives?

I dunno if they changed more things up with this quest, but after not finding any mobs spawning by running around the village, I start getting the new red message saying that the food is being poisoned. Low and behold I have to search every house to find where the damn mob has spawned!!! Seems they are spawning either inside of the houses or spawning just on the outside of a few of them. The first run through tonight never found the first mob before it booted me after running around looking for it all around the villages and inside the buildings. 2nd round we were successful however the first mob was inside of a house! 3rd and 4th mobs were by the ocean 5th one I finally found up by a building invis just sitting there. 7th I am not sure how i got was evidently in a house as I walked in one and the red text stopped flashing. Been doing this the run around kiting way until the end of the task, so running in and out of buildings was getting me beat to a pulp trying to find the mobs. I am a 93 rogue btw and was doing this tonight with my 68 druid. If the mobs are going to start spawning inside of the buildings it may be easier to not kite them. I eventually won as I stated on the 2nd round but just wanted to mention the odd spawning locations, at least a lot different than the 5 or 6 times I had done prior to the updates to the merc quests.

    - Lowered the required number of players to 1.
    - All guards and villagers are now player-friendly. They can be healed but not injured by players.
    - A new wave of enemies will spawn shortly after the current wave has been defeated, or after some time has passed.
    - A warning is now displayed when supplies are being poisoned.

Did this with an Enchanter with run4 solo. Just ran around the outside of the village and down the beach over and over again (stay on the outside of the town to be safe as they all run at different speeds and path oddly). The train that will follow you will aggro in the adds so I didn't need a tracker. I was just messing around on this alt and died the first time as I didn't realize that many of the mobs are invisible so be sure to bring the appropriate spell or item.

Did this with an Bard solo.

Track the first mob that spawns, agro it and after this just run circles for the next 20 minutes.
    no killing nessisary

You actually do not have to kill any of the mobs. I started out killing them but became overwhelmed and all died but my monk, so i just ran the rest of the mobs around the town picking up all the new spawns and once the arch magus or whoever he was spawned and said his little message to the zone i got the update. I then FD'd and all of the mobs despawned, so i went to talk to billik he sent me back and i completed the quest with the captain!

Did this with a 82 Druid (tracking requirement), lvl 75 Enchanter and 71 Rogue and T1 melee and healer.

Center of town should be your main base, where you hail Bilik.

Completely buff before hailing Bilik. You dont' want to be buffing again unless someone dies, which would not be good during the first two rounds.

From there Druid tracks anything that's Ghoul and then later on in the waves, you will start to track followers of Bertox.

Chanter's job, mez and slow, merc Tank had role of main tank.

Druid had puller role so not to keep merc's away from chanter and rogue.

Druid's job is to scout and snare then pull back to center of town. other roles for druid are auxilliary healing, DS'ing MT, ac/atk/fire debuff, dotting or nuking, whichever is less mana intensive.

This instanced event is quite easy if you can keep up the dps and not take longer than a minute to kill these mobs, otherwise you will put a mana tax on your chanter that may require you to change strategies after your first med break.

After the first 4 or 5 ghoul kills, you get a minute to med. Would suggest you have the best mana regen spell's, focus effects, and auras going during this brief med break.

This med break should not be used for buffing, unless you have mana to spare. The next wave will be slightly more difficult pressing your ability to cover all four sides of town.

When you see the fly on track, then you are almost there. Kill the fly and your round should be over.

Other things to mention, you will fail if you lose a thrid of your village popultation.

You will fail if you lose three of your primary village leaders, they are the guards and Billik.

Don't acidentially nuke, tash, or hit a named villager, you will not be able to mez them. Memblur didn't work for me either, maybe chanter was too low? Not sure, but you get agro on named villagers you have to kill them or they will kill you. Killing them takes away from buffer and puts you one step closer to failing this mission.

If you agro a regular villager, you can mez them and that alone should clear your agro.

Fly dropped the Fetid Sash everytime I have killed him, which has been a lot.

easy to solo, just kite everything. nothing summons. the mobs will fear villagers when they get near them, so go to where they run 'from'. non-kiters, get a group if you're under 80 (recomended)

Did this in first attempt, with a group of characters ranging from level 70 to 82.

Set up camp in the northwest end of the village, and sent out tracker to find the mobs and pull them to the group. If the tracker cant see invisible, it will be hard to find them, so ensure that he can.

The script doesn't really happen in waves, as much as it just plays out over time, with mobs spawning at regular intervals. Track them, pull them, and kill them - don't worry about pulling them through village, the villagers won't get them off you, so you are just fine.

Double check your targetting when fighting, and don't use AoEs - you will easily hit a villager.

You don't actually have to kill the two nameds in the end (who are mezzable by the way) - just have to keep them from killing the villagers while the final script part plays out.

Most of the waves seemed to come from the west (beach), with some from the north, and a few from the south. With the group setup in NW part of village it was easy to get them all to me (if they didnt come by themselves).

When the script finished and I was ready to leave the instance I actually still had the two nameds and 1 of the caster mobs alive - thats why I know you dont have to actually kill the last mobs. Just kite them around if you want.

Oh, and the mobs run rather fast, so don't expect to kite them without some form of speed improvement (used bard speed myself, had no trouble).

Three boxed this with Cleric, Ranger and Enchanter using Journeyman tier 1 mercs - two melee one healer. If you are three boxing this it has to go very smoothly and you must maximize your DPS. I suspect it would be difficult to get enough DPS to do this event without 6 characters.

I did this at least a dozen times before beating it, due to learning its idiosyncracies, so I am pretty sure about what I have to say about it.

The event starts once you hail Billik inside the instance. You will face approx 6-8 waves of mobs. Either one or two mobs spawn. A tracker is more than desirable as they will sometimes spawn inside houses. There are three types of mobs in the waves.

    i) a servant of Bertoxxulous
    ii) Bertoxxulian plaguelord
    iii) Bertoxxulian Scablord

a servant of Bertoxxulous are the easiest to kill and generally spawn for the first 2-3 waves.

Bertoxxulian plaguelords are casters. They will try to gate from about 15% HP. If one manages to gate you can struggle to finish the event. If you don't have good DPS prepare to stun them. Like the mobs in earlier missions I've personally noticed they tend to gate more if you snare them.

Bertoxxulian Scablords are melee mobs with higher AC and HP.

If a mob is not killed soon enough it will despawn and an untargetable skull spawns called 'Failure', which show up on track. If you get four failures you fail the event and usually get ported out.

The key to finishing the event is to kill both named at the end, without getting four failures. a bentwing plaguefly can spawn in place of the two named. If you kill that it also wins the event.

We did this with a Necro(82), Wizard(80), Bard(71) and 2 Cleric Mercs and it was almost painfully easy. The last wave was the 2 named which were both kited easily. They did not summon. The townspeople will not help on this mission but they do on the next and they're pretty tough until the named popped. Don't sweat these missions.
    How?

(I three boxed this with a 70 Warrior, 70 Rogue, and 70 Enchanter. Let the villagers help you out.

Also I requested the quest at level 70.)

Was just wondering how this was managed? Did you use Mercs also? I'm a 78 Necro with 17k hp 15k mana and my wife is a 74 shaman around 12+k hp/mana. We use a warrior merc and a cleric merc and can't seem to down the mobs fast enough to complete this. Usualy ends up us porting out cause we have like 6 mobs in the town on us at once.

    Any tips?

When the two named mobs at the end attacked us I noticed the dialogue that came up as the mobs shapechanged Jarlin shouted "Form of a Great Bear" and Zeralin "Shape of an Ice Golem" ... all i could think was "WONDER TWIN POWERS ACTIVATE!". Well at least there seemed to be no Gleek knock off, unless its supposed to be the plaguefly :) - Someone at SOE needs therapy :)
