You must take a Shadowed Ball from Shadowed Men and bring it to Trankia in the Everfrost Mountains. After you hand in the showdowed ball you must then head to Guk and kill the shinta warrior. This will get you the barbarian head, which you must then take back to Trankia. After this, she will ask you then to kill Martar Icebear and hand in the warthread kilt you find on her along with the two notes (one for the shadow ball one for the barb head). She will then reward you with the Kilt.

You say, 'Hail, Vilissia'
Vilissia says 'I am Vilissia, chosen of Solusek Ro. I am a practitioner in the wizardly arts, and keeper of lore for the [runescale cloak], [Tishan's kilt] and the [acumen mask].'
You say, 'What Tishan's kilt?'
Vilissia says 'Tishan was once counted among the mightiest of wizards, and his items are items of power. If you are interested in acquiring Tishan's kilt, you must take a shadowed ball from our mortal enemies, the shadowed men, and bring it to Trankia in the Everfrost Mountains.'

You say, 'Hail, Trankia'
Trankia says 'Hmmph.'

Giving Trankia the Shadowed Ball...
Trankia says 'You must be another one from Vilissia. I will tell you what I tell all the others - you must help be [avenge] my [brother] before I will help you attain Tishan's Kilt.'
You gain experience!
(You receive Tattered Note - Reads: Reminder for a Shadowed Ball - Identifies: This item appears to be written in Barbarian)

You say, 'I will avenge your brother.'
Trankia says 'My brother was part of a raiding party that adventured into the Caverns of Guk. Somewhere inside, he was betrayed and left for dead by the dastardly brother of Karg IceBear, Martar. I want you to find me what remains of my brother's body and bring it back to me. I am told that he died in a mine shaft.'

Giving Trankia the Barbarian Head...
Trankia says 'Oh, Wulfthan, look what has become of you! I told you that you should not have trusted Martar. <>, as a final service, I want you to kill Martar IceBear for me. He is known to roam these parts. Bring me the warthread kilt he wears and my two reminder notes, and I will give you Markar's kilt.'
You gain experience!
(You receive Tattered Note - Reads: Reminder for a good deed done. - Identifies: This item appears to be written in Barbarian)

Giving Trankia the two Tattered Notes and the Warthread Kilt...
Trankia says 'Wait, <>, are you not forgetting something?'
Trankia says 'Wait, <>, are you not forgetting something?'
Trankia says 'Ah, Wulfthan, you are at last avenged. Thank you, <>- please take this kilt as a reward for services well done.'
You gain experience!

Will post the rest of the dialog when a shadowed man coughs up a ball.

Druids NERFED????

OMFG....
Druids nerfed???
What the hell do you want? Planar armor delivered to your doorstep? Exp given to you by the bubbleful???
Druids are in no way nerfed...
We get just about the second best DD's, we are the second best healers...if we weren't before, lvl 58 Tunare's Renewal now makes us that...
If PoP does not give Mages another DS spell, we will DS for more than they will...
Our dots are really frickin high when it comes to amount of dmg...
We can SoW, snare AND root
We can DD, dot, ghetto mez...
Evac, port, gate...
Invis, hide, track...
Our Velious armor is nice...
PoM armor is great
Elysian is frickin easy to get and it has nice stats...
DRUIDS NERFED???
What the heck have you been doing playing a druid to lvl 42? If you think druids don't have any power, play a different class...you're too blind to see how powerful we are...

#Anonymous, Posted: Jun 13 2002 at 3:57 PM, Rating: Sub-Default, (Expand Post) You know, Verant couldn't nerf Druids more if they tried. We don't many good things to wear, our spells are second rate in almost everything, and even the things we CAN wear that are almost halfway decent are taken away from us. Enough already!

race and class

Why are Druid and Beastlord listed as classes when none of the races that can be those classes are listed?

Humans can be Druids, and doesn't say Beastlord on the actual snapshot of the item - so that's probably the mistake....
drop rate off lavastorm SMen
# Sep 17 2001 at 4:56 AM Rating: Decent
I regularly camp the shadowed men in lavastorm for their essence of shadow (rare drop) for use in my smithing endeavors. For comparison.... according to my logs, I have killed 598 shadowed men, and have seen only 1 shadowed ball. Good thing that's not something I'd ever need hehe

The "trick" is find one holding the ball. charm it (if kos) then hand it 2 rusty weapons. The shadow man with equip the weapons and put the ball in the drop slot.
Other items needed.

I want the other items I have Martar's kilt. I'll pay for the other items or you can give them to me if you have one and none of the other. I'll also help you multi quest this for a predetermined amount of pp if you dont want to go through the trouble of killing Martar. Give me a tell if your in posession of either or both of these items.

what Shinta warrior
# Jun 07 2001 at 2:21 AM Rating: Default
i have searched upper guk all over and at the exact loc specified for the Shinta Warrior and i haven't seen him yet...I suspect he has a placeholder, does anyone know who he is. I'm thinking the PH is one of the 3 frogloks in the small room with the barrel. Does anyone have information on this "Shinta Warrior".

Yesterday I was in Upper Guk looking around. (Being a gnome and going in i found i was DUBIOUS to Upper Guk. SWEET!!!) I was near the undead side and desided to go looking for the ancient croc. I found the SHINTA warrior at location pos 1407, pos 336, neg 98. Had a highlevel kill it for me and the head was on it.

Kilt versus gator legs
# Mar 02 2001 at 10:04 AM Rating: Default
In my option you should just get gator legs for ac.

kilt is like 5ac 4str 4sta?
gator legs is 7ac 4wis 15hps

Now the kilt has better sheer numbers for stats, but considering that it would probably take you 24 hours to finish this quest you could just buy gator legs for armor and concentrate on leveling.
3 drops in one camp!
# Jan 14 2001 at 9:23 PM Rating: Default
Well one day i was trying to get a shadowed rapier for jboots, and i got to the SKarana shadowmen, 4 clerics were up and 1 warrior. After i wiped the camp, 3 of the clerics had a shadowed ball! lol. So i ran the quest since I had run across a ball. But the stats still suck compared to my Carmine Pants. Not bad stats if you dont have something like carmine though.
#Anonymous, Posted: Jan 11 2001 at 8:03 AM, Rating: Sub-Default, (Expand Post) This quest is worthless because the shadowed ball never drops, and the kilt is not even that great. I tried to do this quest figured it takes 4 hours. but after 20 hours I still can't finish it. First I got the barbarian head easy enough... then I camped Martaar Icebear by North Tower... that took me 4 hours right there allready. I figure I got all the hard part done but I was WRONG!! I first just tried killing the shadowed man by myself for few hours and with a druid... but that's too slow and the druid gotta leave. So I got a few high 20's with me and let them kill them and get XP. I'm a level 40 wizard so I just single pull and root for them. after 12 hours and shadowed ball still no drop so I gave up. I petition the GM and they said there's nothing they can do and it's just bad luck... That's pure BS but expected from usless GMs. So in conclusion this quest SUCKS! One could of done an epic quest faster then doing this quest. They should ether make the shadowed ball drop more often, make it no drop so it can be brought or make the kilt Uber.. So right now it's worthless quest so if you goina attempt to do this quest, you better think twice!!!
Shadowed Ball

I was passing through Lfay yesterday and saw the wandering SM who is the PH for the shadowed man leader for the ranger orc impaler quest. He was a cleric, I killed him and poof, I have a shadowed ball (= nice bit of luck considering I'm only 36 and was intending to camp for it at 40. Now I have the barbarians head, now all I need is the kilt, is it no drop, or must it be looted off martar?

BTW before this I'd helped kill SM many times for other quest items with not one ball dropping, guess I was just lucky. Even compare this with the apothic kilt and it measures up pretty well. Guess leggings weren't meant for int and mana, just str, sta, agi and hp (with no exceptions I'm aware of, maybe loam encrusted pants from the hole?)
Time estimate wrong

I spent the entire weekend, over 7 hours, just trying to get a shadowed ball to drop. Clearly, four hours is a vast underestimate of how long this quest can take.

So far my hunting party has camped the Shad Men in Sk, WC, and Lfay for approx 14 hours...and no drop on the shadowed ball yet.

We have tried the various tricks, such as having an enchant charm and hand the cleric Shad. Man weapons, all to no avail.

Anyone else having trouble with the drop?

I read on another forum that only the Shadowmen in NK are the ones that drop items.

I spoke to a Wizard few days ago who said that he found a Shadowed Ball in Innothule Swamp. If this is true, it proves that the Shadowed Ball can drop anywhere.

I have spent a combined 40 hours at multiple Shadowed Men camps across Norrath, and I've never seen a Shadowed Ball. I haven't given up yet though. I just kill all the cleric Shadowed Men whenever I pass a camp and cross my fingers :).

Good luck in future hunting!

Hehe Guess what? Last night while passing the Innothule Shadowed Men spawn I killed a Cleric SM who dropped the ball. Now I wear Tishan's Kilt. :D

Yes, they do drop in Innothule, but I've heard of them dropping in SK and WC as well.

The best place I have found for the shadowed ball is in LFay. Turn right once you enter the zone and head west. You will soon see a shadowed man running his route and carrying his "snow-cone", 3/4 of the time when I kill that shadowed man he is carrying the ball.
Easiest way to start the quest...don't have to worry about multiple mobs jumping your butt...

Heres the secret: Wait for a Shadowed man with the "cone" to pop. Hes a cleric, and the cone is a shadowed ball. But wait...dont kill him yet. Buy 2 rusty weapons, go invisible, and hand him the 2 weapons. This will take the place of the cone in his hands and "force" the ball into his inventory where you can loot it. Always works for me.

This item is also usable by Druids if they want.

As for comparison to the carmine pants, the stats are better in almost every respect except the carmine have a save.

Carmine Pants - AC 5, str +3, sta +3, hp +15, sv cold + 10

Tishan's Kilt - AC 4, str +4, sta +4, hp +20

They really should make the stats on the Carmine at least equal to the Kilt.

Not a great item, but it compares favorably with carmine leggings from fear, plus they are different =)

The hardest part is getting marta before the icebear cloak hunters. On the plus side, when you do find Marta, not only do you get the kilt, but a nice cold resist cloak.

Overall a nice quest.

I think you are confusing Martar with Karg concerning the cloak

No, Martar and Karg both drop the cloak.

I can confirm that Martar drops the Cloak of the Ice Bear also. I just got it.
