Gardern is on a balcony at +425, -70, +19, near the spell vendors.

You say, 'Hail, Gardern'

Gardern says 'I am Gardern, listed among the chosen of Solusek Ro. I hold the [lore to the staff] of Temperate Flux and the [lore] to the Weeping [Wand] - items which are highly coveted by my wizardly brethren.'

You say, 'What lore to the staff?'

Gardern says 'The staff of Temperate Flux is a boon to those who dabble in the elemental arts, for it can increase the susceptibility of a creature to both fire and cold. Are you [interested] in the [staff]?'

You say, 'I am interested in the staff.'

Gardern says 'I will craft you a staff of Temperate Flux, but you must bring me the components I require to make it. I will need a heart of fire from an inferno goblin wizard in the caverns of Solusek, a heart of frost from a goblin wizard in the caverns of Permafrost, a rod of bone from a stone skeleton by the shores of Lake Rathe and a Staff of Ro. Bring me these items, and I will make you your staff.'

Gardern needs the following items:

Heart of Fire (from Inferno Goblin Wizard in Solusek's Eye)
Heart of Frost (from Goblin Wizard in Permafrost)
Rod of Bone (from Stone Skeleton by the shores of Lake Rathetear)
Darkwood Staff (obtained from Romar Sunto through a side quest)

Hand in the four items:

Gardern says 'Well done, ______ - here is the staff of Temperate Flux. Use it with the blessings of the Temple of Solusek Ro.'

You gain experience!!

Ok I am going to vent here a sec....I subscribe for this site...this is an old quest but still worth doing in my opinion and in the opinion of several lvl 70 wiz's I know...why is there no dialog, there is no information on this this other than what is recieved in posts.. I have been finding this more and more as a person who likes to quests...is there a better site that is kept more up to date? I will happily drop this one and join the other if it has updated information.

Thanks

Just FYI: The staff can still be MQ-ed. Yesterday, on the Server Kael Drakkal, I did the Turnins of the 3 Nodrop-Parts with my Lvl63 Necro and afterwards gave Gardern the Darkwood Staff with my Lvl 14 Wizzie who ist now prowd owner of the Staff of Temperate Flux (without being able to use it at her low level).
Faction was indifferent for the necro (Erudite) and amiable for the Wizzie (Dark Elf).
Hope that helps ;)

After reading previous post on this quest, about MQ'ing, decided to try. Brought in my 50 ranger to collect the 2 hearts, and rod of bone. Had my 32 wizzy get the staff of ro. Talked to Garden with wizzy to start quest. Then brought in ranger to give hearts and rod to Gardern. He said something to the effect that he does'nt do things half way. Then brought on wizzy to give him staff. Once again the speech about not doing things half way. He took everything, and returned nothing. When I re-hailed Gardern, he started quest all over.
Not sure what I did wrong, but took 5 hours to get stuff, only to loose it in an instant. Would like to hear any advice as to why this did'nt work.

As a 52 wizard, I just completed this quest today. First of all, I believe that the evil Trivial Loot Code (TLC) applies to the drops so if you are too high in level you will need an assistant to raid mode with. Secondly, there is another source for the Darkwood Staff- off of the Sol Ro keepers. I know this because I looted one that another had killed, and when I tested it on the turn-in it worked. Of course, killing keepers would damage your faction and might make the quest impossible, but I thought it should be noted.

I MQ'ed this for my lvl 29 wizzy with my lvl 65 cleric. I turned in the 2 hearts with the cleric and was disappointed to read the line that " We do not belive in half measures." pop up. I was like CRAP! there goes 5 hours of camping for nothing because he took both hearts. I figured what the hech, nothing to lose by trying so I logged off the cleric on to the wizzy. I turned in the Rod of bone and got the same message. I crossed my fingers and turned in the staff and POOF! it worked.

I tried to MQ this for my 29 wiz yesterday, using my 43 Ranger. Unlike the above cleric didn't work for me. After I turned in both hearts and the rod of bone, I realized that my faction was apprehensive with the ranger. The quest NPC ate all three items saying "I won't aid the like of you" So when I turn in the staff with my wiz I get the no half measures messge. All 4 items now eaten. Starting over. First step, kill shadowed men until I raise faction. Ps. I've killed over 100 Shadowed Men and I'm sill apprehensive

Correction, this can be used from inventory. That is the beauty of the staff. It isn't going to be your primary staff, but should be a very useful hotkeyed clicky for pulling and quadding!

I use it all the time from my inventory at 52nd level.

No self-respecting Wizzy goes without it!

I guess im just lucky but my brother has been playing for 3 years and has a few chars 50+. Im a 13 wiz on Tallon Zek. My brother grabbed his 51 Bst. and we went on our spree. Started with what i felt was hardest to get, Heart of Fire in Sol a. No tricks just kill till inferno wiz spawns. Next to Perma for the Heart of Frost, same thing, keep your ears open listening for wizzies casting. The Rod of Bone was really easy actually. Go to lake rathe from Rathe Mountains, hang a left comin outta the zone, bam theres the stone skele camp, only 2 of em in the tower thing, but spawn time wasnt too bad. Took 3 skeles to get the rod. Btw the skeles are mages with pretty good mana. Now that was the easy part, but what WASNT mentioned is you need a lmabent stone. Easy to find off HG's in RM. Now take all your components bak to Temple of Sol Ro. Take the Lambent stone to Romar Sunto. He gives you the Darkwood staff. Take both hearts, the rod of bone and the darkwood staff to Gardern, he gives ya the Flux staff. But only being 13 I have a few more lvls to use this. Total time was 1 hour 27 min to complete the quest. Good luck, lvl strong :)

It's really not that hard, I soloed the entire quest minus the heart of fire, which I got quickly with a normal XP grp, with my 27 wizzy, now this was a while back when he was able to get virtue and kei so that helped a good bit. But still this is a fairly simple quest. Hardest part i found was soloing the skellys in Lake Rather, 2 skellys and there 2 elemental pets were quite a handful. Finally killed one and looted item, gated out with like 20 health and 30m left.

This is a fairly funny post. I imagine that many quests are made easier if you get a fifty-something friend to help you out. I wonder, though, how many people a post like this will really help.

What I have found, also, is that the effort I have had to go to just to get a group together to work on this quest is proving to be a reward unto itself. It sounds hokey, but if the quest is actually difficult to complete, the reward is valued much more.

Just did this quest last night with a friend (39th Wizard and my 40th Druid). The Druid made finding the two wizard types extremely easy and really saved us quite a bit of wandering or camping. Just followed the track and looked at the map until we found the wizards. Only one of the wizards in Perma didn't drop the heart (had my 32nd Wizard along to do the quest twice). This was almost a necessity since there wasn't anyone else even in Permafrost when we got there. Use invis until you're ready to fight because although all the gobbies were green, they still aggro'd us at our levels. Of course, always OOC when you first enter the zone just in case someone can save you some time. GL :)

I don't remember what level I was when I first did this quest for myself, but I was high enough so that I could go and "pick out" the goblin wizards without aggroing the others in Perma, and actually hold a few camps in SolA.

We did most of this quest two days ago with a mage friend of mine because he wanted a good AE pulling staff. Aside from _nothing_ aggroing on us in Perma, his pet was able to take all the goblins in SolA with minor healing assistance. (Well, I AOEd a few too)

He was 44 at the time and I am 56. I guess I do not need to say that the two parts of this quest didn't have any lethal danger except for the part where we pulled a few ice giants and tried to invis to Vox' room.

BTW, the goblins in Perma have a max. of around 600 hp, and the goblins in SolA have a max. of around 700. Beware, though, that they hit very well; I actually had my HP drop down two bubbles once when I tried to AOE.

The staff makes for a _GREAT_ quad/aoe pulling item and I would rather part with my jboots (I have run2 and you need SoW while quading anyway) than it.

The heart of frost was harder though. /ooc many times offering a 100pp to loot it. I camped the preacher room where I was told they spawn. 8 hours about to give up hope a wizard finally spawned and I finished the quest. I guess the good thing is that I killed the preacher 4 times getting 2 runed circlets. Just thought I would give my 2 cents worth

Well, I must have gotten very lucky with this quest. I had never done any other quests, so this seemed like a good place to start.

I bought the Lambent stone in the bazaar, and turned it in for the Staff of Ro.

Went to Lake Rathe, and I got the Rod of Bone on my first kill. Easy kill.

Traveled to Permafrost, and there was one other player in the zone. I didn't go very far in and I saw this player fighting with the Wizard. He was getting beat, so I nuked the Wizard and killed it easily. He looted it, and I asked him to /tell me if he got a Heart of Frost (I would give him some PP for the loot.) He tells me "this one has a heart on it." I looked down...turns out he didn't take the heart! Woohoo! I paid him (a deal is a deal) and gated out.

I then went to Sol A. I was a little worried as it seems a lot of people die there. Luckily, I met up with a Lev 48 SK, who guided me to the bar area. Unfortunately, my invis dropped, and I was attacked by a bunch of goblins. I gated out, and went to med in the Nek forest. While I was there, I saw that one of my guild mates was on. I picked him up in OT, and we went to Sol A. We only went in to the first "gated" area, and there were 2 Wizards. I was surprised because, when I was there before, they were Shamans. I guess the spawn changed. I rooted one, and we killed the first Wizard. Then we finished off the second. BOTH dropped the heart.

Off to the Temple, where I turned it all in for the Staff. It is very cool, and it does lower the resists by quite a bit. Good pulling device too.

Total time: est. 2 1/2 hours. Most of it was traveling time. I think it helped that I was not KOS to a lot of the areas.

Perhaps, I just got lucky, but this quest wasn't incredibly hard. I am a level 36 Wiz, and I was doing pretty well on my own. Having my level 46 Warrior friend help me out was cool, but he was really there just to clear the trash in Sol A. I think he killed 4 goblins total. Invis works fine against the regular goblin guys...just NOT the Wizards, and Shamans.

Get to know the "safe" areas of Sol A. It really helps when you need to med.

BTW- I got almost no aggro from mobs that surrounded the Wizards in Sol A or Permafrost. Using root on one mob while you nuke the other, is a good tactic also. Root one, pull the other out so that the rooted one can't see you/cast on you.

Good luck!

You can actually MQ this quest. Just have someone gather the Heart of Frost, Heart of Fire, and Rod of Bone. You just need the Darkwood Staff! Have the person turn in the hearts and rod all at once. Immediately after, turn in the Darkwood Staff. You should get the Staff of the Temperate Flux. Did it to my level 16 wizzy (At the time), and got it! But if you were to sell this MQ, I would put it at 1k TOPS. Note, that MQ's can FAIL.

Ice goblins killed = about 5, last had heart near the icy goblin camp
Fire goblins killed = 1, i got lucky on this one, he spawned near the drunkard's room
stone skeletons killed = 4, last one had it
bought the lambent stone off the merchants in NK cuz i had to stop by and get the concordance thingie anyway.

the reason i died so much is cuz of those stupid evils, i play on sullon zek and they own sola, so i kept getting trained and killed. not much fun otherwise i woulda had the fire heart sooner ;P

Tips: get 40+ for sola and permafrost, it helps to be able to single pull...

I just heard how nice the staff is today, and reading up on it, I realized I knew something about it already 'cause I saved a heart of fire a while ago. :)

Anyway, I love SolA...I've spent many many hours there. The inferno gob wiz can spawn pretty much ANYWHERE, except near Lavastorm, but I've found most of mine in the southern end of the zone.

If you find a map you can understand, anywhere from the barroom back is good, as is anywhere around the goblin merchant or the goblin king.

Unless you're a SolA veteran like me you're going to need a GOOD full group of 35+ (otherwise 30+, or just you and a friendly level 51+ druid to help :) ). The bar room is "ok" but if you can find the fake wall by Lynada/Goblin High Shaman and pull to that room, that's even better. An added bonus is that there's a SolB zone line close, and there's no goblins between you and it (locate that zone line before you start to pull...you'll never find it if you're doing it in a panic. ;) ).

I dont know if this will help, but if youre just a wizzie trying to do this quest I recomend getting a few friends, last night a 41 Ranger, 38 Wizzie, and I (36 Chanter) were doing this, I died Twice!Talk about BS, these greenies swarm you and dont stop, after we got to Sol B I got a monk friend to help out (42) And I die yet again by getting swarmed by millions of lilttle gobbys. This task isnt meant for just a wizzie to complete in my opinion unless youre just paying to loot the heart instead of killing him youreself

Correcting some wrong information posted above.

The effect on the staff, LowerElement, is a debuff which reduces 6 FR/CR points in PvE, and 9 in PvP. Spells in PvP that only do %66 (not %60) of their effect are DAMAGE spells, not debuffs. Debuffs used to do %100, but was recently changed to %150 (read the patch messages..), which made the staff reduce FR/CR by 9. I am a level 36 wizard and I -love- the staff. It is great fer quad-kiting pulling, etc.

Finally got mine yesterday. I was the one that had the 40+ members in my group and we all died. So last night I decided to go ahead and give it another go. I went to permafrost and about 20minutes in ivis wore off and i was slaughtered.
I am in lvl 30 so that didnt make me feel to great. After getting my corpse i did an ooc asking if someone had the heart. I got an amazing response...THEY WERE DESTROYING THEM LEFT AND RIGHT!!! So a lvl 54 necro came and got me led me to the wizard killed im in about 30seconds and i gated out. Next the heart of fire. I GOT VERY LUCK HERE!!! A 43 bard was in the zone and I offered 300pp to loot the wizard Not only did he bring the wizard to me but then killed it and said here you are good luck with your quest and left!!! OK NOW SOME OF YOU WANNA KNOW WHERE you turn in lambent stone. Temple of solusk upstairs you will find this man. SAFE HUNTING ALL and good luck. This staff is awsome!!! I am currently kiting the watchmen halv in steamfont and this thing really helps i do 240dd almost everytime instead of the 2 and 100 before i had the staff.

I just finished this quest tonight before i had to leave for work.

I would suggest to go to www.graffe.com and print up the walk through.

1- go to perma frost first and get the frozen heart. I got lucky on this one was there about 15 minute and /ooc looking for frozen heart. Someone told there was wizard by the scryers room, so i headed over that way and noticed a dead wizard looked on the corpse and boom. part 1 done.

2- gate back to NK and head south to Lake Rathe, turn on levitate and keep heading south past the ogre camp/Rathe Mtns zone. there is a tower with a skeleton inside who has a pet. Killed the skeleton rooted the pet got the bone rod first kill.

3- I already had a lambent stone in the bank, but if you don't, zone to rathe mountains and /ooc that you are looking for a lambent stone. There are always people hunting the Hill Giants and they will probably be more then happy to let you loot one. (fairly common drop)

4- gate to Nek forest head north to Lavastorm, head north to the wall you will run into a BIG lava lake. there are 3 entrances aroung the lake Sol A, is on the south west corner of the lava lake, Zone in and /ooc looking for heart of fire. You might get lucky, if not head toward the bar area and you will find wizards around that area. I found mine after about an hour and a half just outside the fake wall. (THIS SEEMS TO BE THE HARDEST PART OF THE QUEST) The harder mobs do see through invis, so if you are 40 or below you better get a 48+ friend to help or get a full group if you are 30-40 range.

Ok all here is what we have found. Full group with 2 40+ characters sitting in the bar killing goblins hoping the wizard will pop. 3hours later still killing goblins and for some reason geting some nasty trains. Still no heart and I am getting quite disterbed. If anyone can clarify for me about the easyest place to get one that would be great. Also thanks maolin for all your help with this quest. Couldnt have got as far as i did without ya.

I just did the quest tonight, the wizards spawn in the rectangualr hallway just outside bar room. I kept clearing the bar myself never spawned inside. Just keep walking around in the general area if you see a harder mob "shamans etc" that see through invis. Kill it that is a wiz place holder. I found my wizard after about a hour and a half just outside the fake wall outside the bar room. DON'T JUST SIT IN THE BAR MOVE AROUND THE ENTIRE AREA/HALLWAY!!! If you have the man power clear the hallway. One will spawn. This was the hardest part of the quest for me. And I would save this part for last.
Heart of Fire

A group of five of us went to SolsA to get the Heart of Fire. We had a 29 cleric, a 30 warrior, a 29 wizard, a 28 Necro and a 41 wizard. We camped the bar for about and hour and then had a train of goblins and had to evacute. We returned shortly after and tried again there again for about and hour never once in all this time seeing a Inferno Goblin Wizard. Then we still are not sure what happened but each of us had about 4 to 5 Gobblins a piece on them and all died. Needless to say we have not been back but will once again try and complete this quest. So the point of this being that I must agree that so far the Heart of Fire seems to be the hardest piece to obtain. The two wizzys already had the Rod of Bone and a lambent stone so now we are still in search of the Heart of Fire, Heart of Ice and the Staff of Ro.

effect gives -10 to fire and cold, this came from a level 40ish wiz fighting me in the arena, and it IS resistable...doesnt matter though, cause you can right click till it sticks, unless the creature is intent on resisting it

debuffs on Players only hot for 60% therefore, the staff lowers resists by 10pts to fire and cold. Also, the Staff of Ro is obtained in the Temple of Ro by giving one of the NPC's the lambent stone. Check eqatlas to see which one =)

It lowers the targeted mob's saves versus fire and cold. Not a lot, but noticeably (especially for a class that can do little *except* cast DD spells ... most of which are fire- or cold-based). If you want to know how much, go to http://www.graffe.com/, click on Quests, click on the link for the staff, and click on Spoilers.

I've got the Rod of Bone and the Staff of Ro, as I can read here the Heart of Frost should be relatively easy. I spent two hours in Sol A yesterday, killed most of the zone with a Magician friend, but no luck finding the Heart of Fire, anyone have any clues or tips, how to get hold of it?

Thanks,

Okay, as someone who actually did this quest, and did it at 25, after getting the heart of ice, the rod of bone, and a lambent stone, go into SolA, and head down to where you can zone to SolB..around here there are a number of wizzies that will drop the heart of fire about 1/3 times per kill and the exp was killer at 25, though i would recommend to have either a 29+ cleric type for rev/rez, or a 29+ druid/wiz for port/evac, and lastly, a rogue for CR, as its a pain in the ass..when we went down, 5 people died, 1 made it, and he was escorted out by a 41 rogue, who also did all the CRs for us..(personal friend, and also very well tipped). Heart of fire is by far the hardest piece to get as SolA is under hunted..as for Permafrost, get a 50+ necro/shaman/mage friend, aka anyone with a killer (smart) pet, and you can solo most of the dungon..and get some descent drops in the King Room.

Only advice is don't kill most of the zone. :-) As the other (anonymous) person said, staying near the bar area seems to be the easiest way to get a wizard to spawn (unless you have a superb tracker and can just hunt them down). The hearts are only on the wizards.

(I guess that's because it's a wizard-centric quest since it's for a wizard-only, no-drop item. Then again, the stone skeletons are Magicians, not wizards, but who ever said this game lets a little inconsistency stand in the way?)

My group cleared the bar for over two hours until *one* wizard finally showed up ... without a heart. I was lucky enough to multiquest it, so I don't know how much longer I might've had to stay. My advice: pack a lunch when you go. You're liable to stay awhile.

This one was tough. Spent about 2 hours killing everything in sight with a 53 shaman helping me until we finally found one.

However, we only killed 3 inferno wizards in this time, and it was on the third.

My advice is to hunt near the bar. Inferno wizards pop all the time there. It was camped when I tried, or I bet I'd have had one in 20 minutes.

I think it works from about level 25 and up (that's when I've seen it work), it's not a proc though, it's a right-clickable effect. So maybe it does work but not if you wait for it to happen by itself :))

-This quest is pretty hard to complete. At lvl 29 I have all the pieces except the Heart of Fire which drops off the Inferno Wizard(Not Warlock). SolA is a pain in the butt to navigate through. Goblin Wizards amd Shaman can see through invis and the Gnomes in the castle wont help you when your in trouble. Heart of Ice from Permafrost was easy(Invis look for thier casting message find one alone and RootBomb), Lambent Stone for the the Staff was a sinch(Hehe, just got to Rathe mountains and buy it from a merchant), I had to enlist the help of a group to kill the Stone skellis and Died here a couple times:( but I got it. I am told that the staff can be used from your inventory slot like JBoots. Every little bit helps in the fight against resists, it also give you something to do before dropping the Target that your tanks are fighting, too bad you gotta stop to cast it now.

One point: When you cast an effect on a PC or yourself, the effect is reduced by one third. So the staff actually reduces the resistance by 10. My favorite part is that it procs from an inventory slot, so you can keep wielding the Staff of the Wheel.

This staff is excellent. many people complain that the 6 point de-buff doesnt do anything, but they are dead wrong. at level 35+, i noticed that without the staff i was getting MANY more resists than if i used the staff. pre-35 the effect wasn't QUITE as noticeable, but was still definately present. Also, the staff is great for a range checker and pulling device, not uses to be discounted.
