This quest begins with Capt Linarius in North Karana (on the bridge to South Karana).

You say, 'Hail, Capt Linarius'

Capt Linarius says 'Hail, traveler! You are free to rest within this keep or within any of my towers along the roads to Qeynos. My guards shall keep watch over you. While you tread upon the roads, be warned that there are [local dangers] as well as rumors of [corrupt guards].'

You say, 'What local dangers?'

Capt Linarius says 'My guards report daily to me of dangers in the plains. Lately, they've been telling me of rumors of [Lord Grimrot].'

You say, 'Who is Lord Grimrot?'

Capt Linarius says 'My guards have heard rumors of this Lord Grimrot. It is said that he is a powerful shadowknight who is raising an army of undead. Such things should be reported to the Temple of Life. Journey to Qeynos and speak with Camlend Serbold. Tell him of Lord Grimrot.'

Do as Linarius says, and journey to Qeynos. Camlend is inside the priest guild in North Qeynos.

You say, 'Hail, Camlend Serbold'

Camlend Serbold says 'I say, good to meet you, Sephira! I am Camlend Serbold. Some call me Serbold the Great. I am the leader of the righteous order of paladins which serves the Temple of Life. Together with the clerics of this temple, we defend the will of the great [Rodcet Nife] and smite all who dare to oppose us.'

You say, 'I like Rodcet Nife, he's a nice guy'

Camlend Serbold says 'Do you feel your heart beating within your chest!!? It is Rodcet Nife, the Prime Healer, whose breath keeps it in perfect rhythm. If you do not pray to His glory then I assure you, someday when your heart begins to slow, you shall be crying out loud to Rodcet Nife.'

You say, 'Who is Lord Grimrot?'

Camlend Serbold says 'You have heard of Lord Grimrot? He is a shadowknight working with the Bloodsabers. We have word he is trying to build an army of undead. Only a powerful knight can rid the lands of Grimrot. So, did you come here to [defend life]?'

You say, 'I came here to defend life.'

Camlend Serbold says 'Then go to the Plains of Karana. Somewhere there, Lord Grimrot is hatching his little plan for the Bloodsabers. Bring me his evil scythe and his heart. It is said that upon his death, his soul will be absorbed into this weapon of darkness. Do this and be rewarded.'

Camlend Serbold says 'We must have both Lord Grimrot's scythe, Pestilence, and his misshapen heart.'

Go to South Karana. Not far from the end of the bridge is an undead camp. Lord Grimrot's placeholder is the only putrid skeleton that is standing. It always carries a cute little rusty bastard sword. Respawn is approximately 180-220 minutes.

The live version only spawns during the day, and drops two Pestilence Scythes. The one with the proc is the one you need to turn-in.

The undead version only spawns at night, and drops the Decaying Heart.

Slaying the undead version of Lord Grimrot gives you the following faction hits,

Bloodsabers -200
Guards of Qeynos +30
Opal Dark Briar - 20
Priests of Life +50
Corrupt Qeynos Guards -10

Turn in both these items:

Camlend Serbold says 'We thank you for your service. With Lord Grimrot's evil soul trapped in this scythe, all but the truly evil shadowknights would be able to wield it. I would like to present you with this as a token of our appreciation. Your devotion to life is supreme. Go now, and serve life.'

Spawn Timer on TLP

As stated in an earlier comment from 2015 regarding the Ragefire server, the spawn timer on Oakwynd is within a window of 150-170 minutes. I found the best time to kill the placeholder in order to get the live version of Grimrot to spawn was around 2 AM. This would guarantee the next two spawns would be during the day, and sometimes even a third. I never saw live Grimrot spawn after 5 PM or before 6 AM.

I saw four undead Grimrots in 2 and a half days of straight camping him to two live Grimrots. I think I may have just gotten lucky on the undead rather than unlucky on the live. It is a very long and difficult camp.

One note on the necessary faction - my cleric did not get all of the faction hits for killing the undead Grimrots because I needed to use my shadow knight to keep people from stealing the camp. As I found out, ally faction is required with Priests of Life to do the turn-in, and as a dark elf cleric I started at apprehensive.

To remedy this, I started handling in two gold at a time to Lashun Novashine, but it was taking forever at just 1 faction hit per turn in. A friend then advised me that you can simply start a level 1 Karana-worshiping wizard, kill "a koalindl" in the Pool of Jahnda (underneath the UFO), then allow your cleric to loot the Koalindl Fish and turn them in to Enic Ruklin for +100 Priests of Life faction each. This speeds up the process considerably.

Here are the responses I got from Camlend Serbold at each faction level:

Apprehensive:
[Thu Jul 13 18:25:21 2023] You say, 'defend life'
[Thu Jul 13 18:25:22 2023] Camlend Serbold says, 'Your mere presence disgusts me. Please remove yourself from my sight. Until you change yourself and your ways, you are unwelcome in the Temple of Life.'

Indifferent through Warmly:
[Thu Jul 13 18:48:45 2023] You say, 'defend life'
[Thu Jul 13 18:48:45 2023] Camlend Serbold says, 'The Temple of Life smiles upon you, friend... but such a delicate matter can only be entrusted to our most loyal members.'

Ally:
[Fri Jul 14 01:08:56 2023] You say, 'defend life'
[Fri Jul 14 01:08:56 2023] Camlend Serbold says, 'Then go to the Plains of Karana. Somewhere there, Lord Grimrot is hatching his little plan for the Bloodsabers. Bring me his evil scythe and his heart. It is said that upon his death, his soul will be absorbed into this weapon of darkness. Do this and be rewarded.'

I was surprised that I could not get the Paladin to give me the quest for Grimrot until Ally. I was Not going to risk turning in the 2 drops until he would talk about it. My gnome cleric was not liked by anybody. Couldn't get the flask of nitrates for the regurgitonic until I got jagged pine faction to amiable (druids on this one). I did not want to kill fish or just create a toon to do it. Gave the brother at the temple 350 bone chips (2 at a time). Delivered 40 blessed oils to the brother in WK. Slaughtered hundreds of kobolds in black burrow. Killed 30 poachers and turned in their heads. Once amiable to druids in Surefall got the flask of nitrates. Did Origin to akanon, got the regurgitonic, gated to bind at temple of life. I would grab a blessed oil for deliver in WK and then run to WK, deliver blessed oil then go feed Frostbite the regurgitonic. Gated back to the Temple and gave the fish to Eric. Did this 6 times before I got to ally and could turn in for the Agis. I ended up amiable, kindly, warm and ally with a couple of groups doing all this. The bears were all threating but they did not attack. Mammoth actually walked up to me and stared into my eyes. I backpedled very fast, so not sure if it would have attacked or not. I think the bears are near sighted though. The blood saber woman agroed from 3 or 4 times as far away.
For Grimrot I killed the PH at 5AM and 5Pm to get the 2 versions. I actually killed him with my lvl 33 Druid and logged my 16 cleric to loot. Both were easy kills and did not resist drones of doom and only occasionally the immolate fire DOT. Snare was resisted enough I just used SOW to get far enough away to cast the dots. I was 95% in 16 at turn in and ended up 8% into 17 so estimating 10% at 17.
I am using it as a back item until I can get a Lodizal shield for back with EB. This will likely stay in the bankfor a resist set of armor with 25 vs Disease.

Good luck

I see a couple of posts down someone posted faction for the turnin. Is that acceptable or do I need to do the quest? It seems pretty credible.

Respawn is NOT 180-220 minutes on Ragefire it is 150-170 minutes. So if you want Live Grimrot best time to kill is around 4am. If you want undead Grimrot best time to kill is around 6pm.

Kept getting Live version of Grimrot, so...

As i did this quest and the ph seemed to pop every 3hours and 20 minutes (when i was watching closely) i did some thinking and calculating.

EQ time is 1hour per 3 minutes right? So every 3hours is 5 and 1/2 days.

So i started waiting and killing PH putrid skelly (standing only, under object without the thing on top) at 5am every time. So if it pops between 3hrs and 3hr 20min it would be forced to pop at night. Next time he popped it was the undead version. If you do this quest and it works or doesnt work please confirm. I would also guess that if you kill ph at 5pm you will get Live version. (confirm?)

Also if Camlend will not give you the task, just keep killing putrid skellys with undead nukes, you will have your faction by the time you are done.

Went with a mag, who just killed everything about the camp area, and got a nice head piece from named mob that ran by. got gems from aviaks, skins from lions, plat from centaurs armor drops, and elephants tusks.

Advise would be take a pet class or melee class with you. Live version was tough at lvl 35 and very resistant to nukes. Mag pet tanked by self and I healed for an easy kill. nuked pet with summoned nuke on mag.

Was pleasantly surprised to get a half level of exp from this quest at turn in at 36.

lol, when this quest was popular, i.e. 9 years ago (2000), he was a badass... I camped him for about a week, I think literally all day on days off and switching off with my brother to get some sleep. I only saw the live spawn once just after a server restart; as luck would have it, someone happened to have been marching by and snagged him from me so I never got my Aegis. Ever. Trust me, I wanted this bad

Hate to burst your Bubbles, but My lvl 40 Druid soloed him quite easily. He didnt have much chance to do anything except hitting me for 460 with one cast. After that i stayed well out of casting range and let my DoTs work. He dropped BOTH scythes and a vial of human blood. This was the human version ( hence the human blood). The NO DROP version is 16/48 NEC WAR SHD 2HS with 1 charge of Vampiric curse. A 35 CLR and PAL group should have absolutely NO PROBLEMS taking either of these guys down. He was a pushover. Just remember that if you are MEELEEing, try your best to interrupt casts otherwise he will decimate you with that one large nuke. Hope this helps.

You can't interrupt HT.

As a melee back in the day, the live version ripped me up quite well.

I needed help.

His Steal Strength makes you hit for piddly damage.

These days it might be easier for a paladin if they had the right equipment and spells (LoY).

I still have this in the bank for tradeskill suit.

Hate to bring you down from your ubberness oh mighty slayer of badguys.I do believe you killed a Grimrot. You just didnt kill nor fight the Grimrot most of the posts below are talking about. Killablity now = very high. However once upon a time us old enough to remember knew of a Evil, badass who was known throughout the land for running 'Red's' out of SK. We call this guy the GREEN CON GRIMINATOR !
Oh wait I failed to mention that a year or so back we had a nerf on the Magic Resistance of mobs and pvp resist checks remember? Yea that was all outlined in the patch along with how designers had been programing mobs up to that point. You see back then to make a mob resistant to let's say 'Mesmerise' the designers had to put some gnarly mojo on the resistance numbers. <shrug> yea kinda blows but that is all they had to work with.
Our green con Griminnator was a Magic Resistant badass who opened up a can o whoop ***.

The Grim you killed is the lil girly Grim who slaps and pulls hair while calling you *****. Like you said 'Absolutely No Problem' for such a tough guy like yourself or my little sister to kill.

I only bring this up for Mister Bubble Burster / Kahuna of Killability. NO EAZY TASK slaying the Old Grimrot who could not be touched by spells. Not even the mighty Jedi of SK Hexhiss would be a match for the GRIMINATOR.
Humm had you played 'back in the day' of bad graphics and really bad loot you might of known this fact cause he would of ran your Nature Loving self to the bridge and kindly shown you the Zoneline with his boot in your uber ***:)

However I do like a selfrightious spitfire. No way you could of known they nerfed it unless you have wasted many years playing this damn game. Had I been you I would of made a bigger *** of myself. Reguardless I wont flame score cause if anyone knows what it is like to be misunderstood it is Me :)

Well, maybe overkill, but I think mr bubble burst up there needed to be taken down a notch. That post made light of the difficulties that clerics and pallies have with Grimrot. Sure a druid can kill mobs that others have trouble with, we all know this. I have seen a druid solo an Ice burrower, and there is a druid on my server who solos faydedar. Does that mean a cleric has any hope at all of killing either mob solo? Nope.

So, a druid coming here and taunting people with the fact he soloed Grimrot, just comes off as being arrogant.

Okay, it's very important anyone trying to do this quest read this message, otherwise you'll be very disappointed.

To complete this quest, you must find a Decaying Heart and a Pestilance Scythe. But here's the catch: there are TWO versions of the Scythe floating around out there! If you turn in the wrong one, Serbold will eat the heart and give you back the scythe.

The Scythe needed for the quest is apparantely No Drop and has different stats than the other Scythe. When I have finished the quest myself, I will post the exact details here.

Finally, something new about Grimrot spawn rate. Kill placeholder and either placeholder, undead Grimrot or Live Lord Grimrot will spawn 3 real time hours later. I needed the help of one upper level caster to kill him.

I actually did this quest twice but turned in the wrong scythe the first time. Then got the right scythe and turned that in without any effect. You'd think this guy would remember you already gave him the heart. Grrrrr. Anyway, I almost quit the game. After a few months I found my questing hat again and get the two items again. Make sure you turn in the no drop scythe with the heart. got 8pp and the aegis of life.

Also, /say what about lord grimrot to Cameland Serebold.

also you need to say I came here to defend life.

Have fun.

I was just wandering through SK and noticed Grimrot on track.

I walked in to the middle of that undead zone and pulled him and his closest friends with my AE snare, then cast the AE root a few times until all of them were dead.

True about the placeholders and the time, but it seems to me after camping it for awhile, that if you kill the PH at 5AM the DEAD, yes DEAD might spawn 3+real time hours laters. If you kill the PH at 5PM, the LIVE might spawn 3+real time hours later. It seems around 3hours 15minutes or so. Those times worked for me anyway.

Paladins get LoH and you're at least like 10 levels above the guy even if he spawns at level 35. There's no way you couldn't take him unless you really really suck. :p Also if he does do a lot of damage just root, stand back, and heal up then go at him again. My level 40 ranger took the Live version of him with not many problems, using root he can't do much too you if he's dark blue to you or less.

# Jan 08 2003 at 4:40 PM Rating: Decent
This is a triggered spawn. I waited for almost a wek to get this shield, it makes a nice backpiece. However, DON'T kill every Standing Putrid skelly you see. That was my mistake. Luckily for me a high lvl cleric came and showed me. DO go to Everlore web-site and look it up. This quest should take 1-2 days RL. If you by chance ran by the skelly in camp in South Karana, the exact location of the standing putrid skelly (the placeholder), the live and undead version of Lord Grimrot, is pos 1379, pos 1170. Shield is not rechargeable, but with AC 12 and 10 wis, it makes a nice cloak for a pally or cleric. Clerics, have back up, no matter what your level may be. Thanks to the high level priestess who helped me finish this quest and to all my awesome guildies, the Fellowship of Vazaelle.

Unless they recently changed it, the PH should be the ONLY standing putrid skeleton. The others are crumpled up piles of bones, until you aggro them.

Also, killing the other putrid skeletons, while not necessary to spawn Grimrot, is a good way to pass the time, and also help you raise your faction with the Temple of Life.

It took me a whole week to do this quest, back when I did it, and I made sure to kill the PH every time he spawned. The problem wasn't so much getting Grimrot to spawn, it was getting the Right grimrot to spawn. I had 4 copies of the live grimrot, before I finally got the undead one to pop.

Only if that Lvl 51 Paladin has recently received his solefire! :-)

By the way, Kaz and his friends on the way to help me get my soulfire saw the live version just standing there waiting to be killed. I have been in SK for about 6 days now killing every skelly that pops up and have never seen either one. Of course I have never returned exactly 3 hours on the dot after killing the standing Putrid - so I may be missing him.

To make the time pass better, kill lions and lioneses - they usually drop HQ or MQ pelts 7 out of 10 times. Also, you can kill the bandits for the sashes to turn in. Each sash gets you about 4 -5 plat when done, plus faction!

Wow, have you even looked at the Aegis? Notice it says "BACK' on the slots you can equip it in?

Sure a 12 ac 10 wis SHIELD is not that great. Howver, a 12 ac 10 wis 25 SV DISEASE back slot item is pretty nice.

25 save disease is awesome as resist gear, even after you get better.

And to answer your question Kaz, yes, you'll have no trouble.

I soloed the dead version at lvl 47 or so. The live one I took out with a 30something melee helping, so you and decolater should have no problem :)

As the guy above points out, the hard part is spawning them.

Yes You will have no trouble taking down either version of Lord Grimrot.
shield is not obtainable by DE
# Dec 20 2002 at 3:44 AM Rating: Decent
No Innoruuk worshipers can get this shield.
Sorry..

Especially if you killed any of those Rodcet Nife folks back in Nek for your Cleric newbie armor.

Even if faction was high I believe your Deity wont allow it.

The ability to do a quest is based solely on faction, which is calculated deity, race, class and any faction hits you've taken, good or bad. No matter what your faction may be, if there is a way to raise it, even slightly, by for example killing a certain type of mob or doing another quest which doesn't require such high faction, you can raise your faction to the point where you can do the quest.

One commonly used work-around for a lot of quests is to have a druid cast share wolf form on you, which will make you dubious, indifferent or higher in many cities, good or bad. This is a large part of iksar monk faction fixing.

Deity is nothing other than a positive or negative faction modifier, and if you can raise the faction, you can max out (ally) given enough time.
Is this obtainable by Dark Elf Clerics?

Seeing as how i may only worship Innoruuk and this quest is given by he Priests of Life is this obtainable to me?
Quest Conversation

Well I now have my Aegis of Life. WOOT!

Thanks to all the previous posters who provided great information! One thing I wanted to add is this:

Get your faction for the Priests of Life up to Warmly. Then start asking Camlend Serbold about Lord Grimrot. If he responds by explaining the quest to you, your faction is high enough. If he responds by saying (something to the extent of) you must prove yourself, your faction is still not high enough. Here is the conversation:

(Ask Camlend about Lord Grimrot)

/say What about Lord Grimrot?

Camlend Serbold says 'You have heard of Lord Grimrot? He is a shadowknight working with the Bloodsabers. We have word he is trying to build an army of undead. Only a powerful knight can rid the lands of Grimrot. So, did you come here to [defend life]?'

/say Yes I will defend life.

Do this and be rewarded.
Spawn Where?
# Sep 29 2002 at 4:46 AM Rating: Decent
Ok, someone please tell me WHERE he is suposed to spawn.
Heart and Scythe

Anyone know if I can turn these in at different times, unfortunately I turned in heart without the right scythe.

At 52, I tired of necromancy. It's tough to get a group, and masses of solo artists have screwed our reputation, so "the hell with it" I said, and restarted as a Cleric.

Leveling outside Paw in my early 20s, a kind soul shouted "Grimmy's up!". I'd read this quest here on Allakhazam's, and knew of Grimrot's potential bounty. The group and I scurried up to the undead camp, and make quick work of undead Lord Grimrot - I gleefully looted his decaying heart.

I spent 22 contiguous hours waiting on placeholders, and do not recommend it. Eventually, I parked my defunct Necro at the site and logged on him 1st every time I entered Norrath. If you have the means, I recommend this very highly. Today (20 levels later) I logged on and saw the Standing Putrid, huzzah! Killed him and (having learned from my earlier mistake) set my alarm clock for 3 hours later and watched a movie. I repeated this 3 times until a living Grimrot popped, clad in full plate (sans helm) and holding MY nodrop Pestilence Scythe! The pet (52nec) got to 80h before Grimmy died, so I can't really gauge his toughness.

Here's the thing: my Necro has the Scythe now, and the Cleric's got the Heart.

Since the necro did the actual camping, scores of Putrids have gotten him to Amiable with the Priests of Life. My dwarf Cleric is Apprehensive, ugh. I tried Bone Chips with the dwarf, but very little noticeable effect after 6 stacks. I then tried handing in 2gp at a time, with much better results. 350gp got me from App to Amiable, and then - off to the UFO pond for Koalindl killing.

With each char at Amiable, I recorded the turn-ins and the resulting faction adjustments:

Amiable-Kindly: 5 fish
Kindly-Warmly: 4 fish
Warmly-Ally: 3 fish

I created a mule Wizzie, got him to level 2 in the newbie meadow out in front of QN, then parked him at the NorthWest corner of the UFO pond. Pull with Shock of Cold, then stab em to death. Hopefully, Enic won't come for you (the NW corner is a relatively safe spot). There are 2 fish in there, on a 6 minute spawn cycle.

Kill the 2 Koalindls with the mule, /camp on to your main, turn the fish meat in to Enic, repeat. Once BOTH characters holding quest bits are at Ally, move them up the ramp next to the UFO; step into the blue lights, this will port you to the cleric guild. Look for the Cleric in full plate, Camlend Serbold. <<NOTE: You need the NODROP scythe and heart>> I didn't bother hailing him, I simply handed the scythe over with my (allied, heh) Necro, /camped, logged on the Cleric, handed him the heart, and recieved my Aegis of Life.

My thanks to all who posted on this ballbreaker of a quest, you made it doable. The reward is a powerful item, and an impressive status symbol - while this CAN be multiquested, I can't imagine anyone giving up their 1/2 of a shot at the Aegis. I suggest the impatient simply buy an Acrylia Studded Cloak. Finally, my apologies for the flat tone of this post, it's 2:26am and I am dazed :D

Sure, he's right where the link with his name on it says he is. click there and read. Also, to MQ this, both of you need high enough faction to do the quest. And, make sure you have help, a 34 isn't going to solo the undead one.

After this quest you'd better have invisible to get through Qeynos. In North Qeynos behind the first building through the doorway [I think it's a tavern]walks the corrupt liutenant. He was blue to 51 and has a nice harm touch. As you go through the city the more guards you con, the more you'll find corrupted once. Most will be green to you by the time you're ready to do this quest. The bandit sashes will take you over the top in faction but watch out by the corner you turn them in. There are 3 corrupted guards that path there now.

Facts about Lord Grimrot:
The live human version will con light blue to a lvl 51 and almost killed me, I had to zone. After I zoned back in, I had help and he went down. The dead version will be green, and you will be able to kill him with 1 or 2 retribution casts. What people do not understand is about the placeholder. Just because you kill it, write down the time, and come back 3.15 hours later does not guarentee you getting the live or dead version. You may just get another place holder. I use the shield for a back slot item, the resist for disease is great and not bad ac either, especially with the 10+ wis.

Good luck healers!

Aegis of Life
# Jul 06 2002 at 9:04 PM Rating: Decent
I completed this quest in two days. I killed the Live Grimrot when a friend sent a tell he was up. He took me to one bub of life. I camped the ph every 3 hr. and 10min. The dead version spawned about 20 hours after the first live spawn. (6am cst). I missed him by 2 min and someone got him. I went back every 3 hrs. 10min. and by 5pm the second day the dead grimrot spawned. I had killed a live one inbetween again. My faction was up to kindly after two days of killing putrids. So I got 20 red sashes from bandits in WK and handed them into Chesgard in North Qeynos. Oh yes I am kos now to the Leutinent so have to invis past him. Hand sashes in one at a time. sell the rewards and go to Temple of Life to hand in the Heart and Scythe. I am now warmly regarded and got my Aegis of Life.

Well worth the effort
