I read many of the conflicting posts...
no the place holder does not "despawn" as in disappear but i camped it for about 15 hours total and got both versions of grimrot
got undead on the first hour of trying, which prompted me to complete it
got another undead at about hour 12 and live at hour 15
at 46 i soloed both the live gave me a run for my money and i healed myself to about 40%mana and used loh, note i only have like 85 wisdom AND i was scared and yelling for people to help, someone showed when he was at 10% and i really feel like i got him solo.

the ph spawns every 3 game days (72 mins a gamn day)

i was doing this thing where i would keep him alive until 3pm game time
didnt work, just had to kill wait for him to spawn again
the second time i got undead grim he just poofed
(no graphic) suddenly i noticed he was grimrot
and when i got live the same thing
all within relatively short time of the ph spawning
he poofed at night i noticed
maybe around 10 or midnight?
i was pretty excited and cant give you specifics
but don't kill him, i am pretty sure that just makes you friggin wait forever
i noticed that sometimes the ph spawns at day or at night and i think that this is the key to which grim will poof for you

While you tread upon the roads, be warned that there are [local dangers] as well as rumors of [corrupt guards].' You say, 'What local dangers?' Capt Linarius says 'My guards report daily to me of dangers in the plains. Lately, they've been telling me of rumors of [Lord Grimrot].' You say, 'Who is Lord Grimrot?' Capt Linarius says 'My guards have heard rumors of this Lord Grimrot. It is said that he is a powerful shadowknight who is raising an army of undead. Such things should be reported to the Temple of Life. Journey to Qeynos and speak with Camlend Serbold. Tell him of Lord Grimrot.' Do as Linarius says, and journey to Qeynos. Camlend is inside the priest guild in North Qeynos. You say, 'Hail, Camlend Serbold' Camlend Serbold says 'I say, good to meet you, Sephira! I am Camlend Serbold. Some call me Serbold the Great. I am the leader of the righteous order of paladins which serves the Temple of Life. Somewhere there, Lord Grimrot is hatching his little plan for the Bloodsabers. Bring me his evil scythe and his heart. It is said that upon his death, his soul will be absorbed into this weapon of darkness. Do this and be rewarded.' Camlend Serbold says 'We must have both Lord Grimrot's scythe, Pestilence,and his misshapen heart.' Go to South Karana. Not far from the end of the bridge is an undead camp. Lord Grimrot's placeholder is the only putrid skeleton that is standing. It always carries a cute little rusty bastard sword. Respawn is approximately 180-220 minutes. The live version only spawns during the day, and drops two Pestilence Scythes. The one with the proc is the one you need to turn-in. The undead version only spawns at night, and drops the Decaying Heart. Slaying the undead version of Lord Grimrot gives you the following faction hits, Bloodsabers -200 Guards of Qeynos +30 Opal Dark Briar - 20 Priests of Life +50 Corrupt Qeynos Guards -10 Turn in both these items: Camlend Serbold says 'We thank you for your service. With Lord Grimrot's evil soul trapped in this scythe, all but the truly evil shadowknights would be able to wield it. I would like to present you with this as a token of our appreciation. Your devotion to life is supreme. Go now, and serve life.' When is the last time someone has succesfully used this technique? The reason I ask is that I have been told that Verant "fixed" this respawning. Also, if this technique does still work, does that mean day of time has nothing to do with which version of grim will spawn?

You need a high "warmly faction" to receive the quest. And one easy solution is to give 2 bones or 2 golden coins to Lashun NOVASHINE.
But BE CAREFULL ! As soon as u become "warmly" with guards of Queynos, u will be KoS near the Casino.
Lashun has 2 spots. One in front of the UFO (Temple of Life) and suddenly walk to the Monk place. Dont follow him !

The reason for this is that a corrupt Qeynos Guard (about level 40ish?) hangs out by the monk guild, and regularly patrols the area surrounding it. Unfortunately, even if you try to run, the GOOD qeynos guards will help the evil ones, presumably because they are unaware he is corrupt. Bad situation all around, and has required me to make a run to zone more than once even though the guard in question is now green to me. Funny to see guards that otherwise con warmly chasing me thru the zone like mice. Even funnier, if you kill the corrupt, even though good guards may be hacking on you, you take a positive hit on the ones attacking you in defense of their fellow guard.

There is a 50th lvl SK corrupt gaurd near POD in NQ. To avoid losing faction with the corrupt gaurds build your faction with the Temple of Life by giving Novashine either 2gp's at a time or bones stacks of two at a time. If you kill putrid skele's for faction you will also lose corrupt gaurd faction.

Just thought I'd add my experiences so far. I was cruising through SK, saw the PH was up and just waxed it. I remembered afterwards about killing it at the right time - I did a /ti and it was 5 AM game time.
Left the spawn place and went screwin around in Velious, came back exactly 3 hours after I had killed the ph and waited... almost 30 minutes later undead grim spawned. It was 12 AM game time. I tried camping grim all day last week, he never spawned once but from experimenting with the times of the PH I have noticed that 5PM definately doesn't work all the time, it is probably luck. 5AM however, might be a trigger for the undead Grim. I will have to give it a try and see. I was also wondering... how long did it take you to kill grim... Doesn't it base on the time the PH dies and not the time you attack him. Those of you that killed him at 5am/pm, were you all tanks, did you tank him til 5am/pm or did you actually last til 6pm at time of death? I tried to camp this with the wizard as I didn't want it stolen from my cleric... the PH dies in one nuke so I am curios if its actually 5am/pm or if its actually 6am/pm

I camp Grimrot for 6 days. I got the live one after 3 ph. Pure luck, because i didnt know about the "kill time". But i killed 23 times the ph at 3m or 4 am or 5am, after someone told me to kill it between 2 and 5... but no result. An ultra rare spawn it seems... I pray Tunare because i dont see an another solution... Maybe the 24th kill will be the good one...

I just got done killing undead Grim. i killed placeholder at 5am. 3 hours later in r/l at 12am game time undead grim spawned. Easy kill for a 42 cleric hehe

ok, i really want this shield... but the problem being... im a dark elf and am very kos to qeynos everything, :-( is it possable for me to get my faction up at all? if so, how and about how long would it take? also, what does it look like when equipped? i am a victim of fashion :)
In a more helpful vein than the other guy...
Simply kill loads of the Putrid skellys. Kill some Bandits. And, for bonus points, kill orcs, gnolls and goblins in Highpass/Highkeep. The scalps from the orcs & gnolls, and the ears from the goblins, are turned in to the appropriate Captains for those areas for good faction with the Corrupt Qeynos Guards and the Freeport Militia... all without any negative faction hits.

Well here is what I have so far. On Sunday I camped the skells for about 24 hours. I killed the Live version about halfway through that. I killed all PH at 5PM prior to his spawn. Took 3 PH before he spawned. He also spawned at 9AM so I don't think the noon has anything to do with it. I am now camping the undead one. I have killed the PH 8 times in a row at 5AM and have not had any Undead Grim. I have also had PH spawn at midnight (12AM) so I don't think that the midnight time has anything to do with undead version. I have tried to leave the skells unmolested though it gets kind of difficult in the evening when there are so many people on. I will stick to the camp until I get the heart and will let you know the times. Been at it for about 27 hours now. Starting to fade off.. lol I hope its worth it.
BTW I am a Dark Elf and am high warmly. I stopped gaining faction with the bandit sashes so I thought I was maxed out. However, I have started getting Priests of Life faction when I kill the Putrid skells so maybe I am not.

Well, I camped this time for 51 hours straight through and a total of about 72 hours. After last 51 hour continuous camp I said forget it, its not worth it. I went on a Naggy raid and while we were buffing up, I got a tell from a guildy that the undead version popped. I had just changed my bind point a minute before so there was no way to get there in time. Now I just stop in for a bit every day in hopes that I can get it. I believe there is no rhyme or reason to the undead version. I think it is just the luck of the draw and any coincidences that happen are just that, coincidnece. BTW the undead version spawned around 8:30PM. Good luck to all that attempt this quest because thats the only thing that will help you get it in a short camp. In the time I have spent camping for this quest I could have been 49.

I started this camp on a Sunday night around 6pm real time. I saw the standing sword wielding Putrid skel PH so i took him out about 1 am game time. I spent about 10 minutes killing the normal pile of bones putrids to start building faction. I read the posts about him being a 3 hour 20 min spawn so I logged and came back around 9. There was no PH so someone had already killed it. Came back 2 hours later, waited about 40 minutes and another PH spawned. Killed it around 2pm game time. Didn't come back until Monday around 2PM real time. PH was up and killed at 12 am game time. Checked again 3 hours 20 min later and another PH. I read posts about the 5am/pm kill time, so I let PH stand until 5PM game time. Logged unitl next spawn and sure enough undead Grim was up! Dont remember game time but it was night. He dropped the heart and a Pestilence Scythe lore item. Next spawn was a PH and I killed him at 5AM game time. Logged out until next spawn and found another PH. Logged out until about 5:30 AM real time. Got on just before PH spawn was due, but a system message came up about server shutdown :( Logged out until servers came back up on Tuesday around 2PM real time. Lo and behold! Human Grim was waiting for me :) Started banging on him with my Throneblade. He took some chunks out of me fast with Harm. I could not lay a single spell on him!!! Do not bother casting on this bad boy. He feared me once, but it was short duration. Based on the damage he was doing compared to what I was doing to him, I didnt bother trying to heal myself during fight since I had LOH ready. I just concentrated on keeping him targeted and doing damage. He got me down to 3/4 bub when I cast LOH. He only got about another bub out of me before I killed him. He had 2 scythes, the same lore one that the skel version drops and the real deal lore no drop one that has the Vampire effect on it. Several people ran up to his corpse while I was there checking his loot :) I had to tell them the scythe wasnt the quest one. So if you intend to camp him it may be worthwhile waiting for the 5am/pm kill time on PH. Plan to spend a few days with your character parked, and be prepared to lose the spawn a few times if you cant return to game in time to hold camp again. I never had a problem with the camp once I knew the timing on the PH. Most players wont sit there waiting a potential 3+ hours for next spawn. Good luck all!

I am posting this the day after I got the Pestilence Scythe from Human Grim. Since I now had the heart from undead and scythe from living I needed to get the proper faction. I was currently kindly with the Priests of Life. This is after I had done the bones to Nova to build up faction for Vambraces of Ro quest with Priests of Life. It took maybe 4 or 5 bagfuls of bone chip stacks to get this faction. Even after killing near 50 putrid skels while camping grim it was still kindly. I had also collected a bagful of chips while I camped Grim. I handed these in but was still kindly. I purchased another bag plus a few extra stacks from players. This finally took me to warmly. I asked the knight in the Priests of Life ufo about Lord Grimrot, and he brought up something about defending life. This is the key phrase you use to check faction:
"I came here to defend life"
If he says he cant talk about this, you need more faction. What I did to get the faction up was return to the undead camp in SK and kill all skels collecting bones. After clearing camp I would run NE to the raider camp along shorline near bridge to collect bandit sashes. These are handed in to a knight outside Temple of Thunder. I didnt know how to start him talking about sash quest, but my con was amiable so I just gave him a sash and it worked. I handed in maybe 2 more bags of bone chips and about 10 sashes. I aslo did some of the other minor Priest of Life quests, maybe 2 or 3 (like oil to brother estle).
I went back to Priests of Life and gave the knight the phrase and he gave me the quest to find Lord Grimrot's heart and scythe. he doesnt mention anything about the undead and live versions. I gave him the Decaying Heart and no drop Scythe with Vampiric Curse effect and I received the shield :) Lots of work, but worth the time.

2) Gave him about 2000 gp in increments of 2gp.
3) When I first conned warmly I went to Camlend and said "Yes I will defend life" and got the response about only trusted allies or some such.
4) I gave several hundred more gold and asked him the same question and got the quest.
5) Wanting to be on the safe side I gave Lashun 250 more gp (had it on me anyways)
6) Turned in the no drop scythe and heart and got the shield
I found giving the gold was quicker but much more boring. I also think I could have turned in the stuff as soon as I got the quest but I didnt test that theory out.

Well got my aegis this morning after roughly a 20 hour camp. The 3hr 10 mins to 3 hr 25 mins is about dead on for his spawn time. At first I got 4 Ph's which I killed at various times due to time to play. The last ph I killed at 5pm on the nose. Then the undead grim spawned for me. He was way easy to kill. Killed him at 5am. The next spawn was once again the undead grim. Didn't get to time his kill due to a 50+ ranger coming over and wiping him out while I begged him not to. I then came back 3 hours later and the live version was up. Killed him with the help of Ledile a 45 mage. I then got some sleep. When I awoke the live grim was up again. I soloed him pretty easily at lvl 40. Now my wife's lvl 14 cleric has both pieces and just has to get her faction up. I killed the skeleton's around him sometimes and didn't others. Didn't seem to make a difference. Good luck to all out there.

I (39 paladin) soloed him much to my surprise just yesterday. Had to use LoH and he finally started running away from me (what a feeling, LoL) when I was down to 2 bubbles of health.

It shows that he/she is a petty and jealous person that obviously isn't satisfied to just play the game whichever way makes them happy, but that they have to whine, complain and insult others, just because someone has an advantage that they themselves dont have.

Posted: Jan 05 2001 at 4:44 PM, Rating: Sub-Default, (Expand Post) LOL its not as hard to twink a level 10 to 194 wisdom as you think, High elf cleric with maxed wisdom plus a few simple items... makes it very easy. Part of the fun of twinking is just to use stuff you have gotten you can't use. I got tons of stuff like that lying around. Another trick is just camp some of the quest items for exp. I leveled my cleric while getting his quest armor at level 12-16 he now has a full suit of Cleric Quest Armor. He is level 30 with Molten cloak, nightshade wreath, charred guardian shield, the wisdom jewelry:rings and veil, Adamite Epolets, tainted teirdal morning star, mithril bracers, the 2 wis gloves from paw, forest loop, etc...I had gotten most of this stuff when the cleric was about level 9 or so... then I power leveled him to 30 off and on for a week's worth of time, he's got about 7 days played but most of that is just standing idle around. Most of the equipment you can get at level 35 to 40...
While I, to some extent, agree that when you have stuff that you can't use on your main you give it to a secondary character... the idea of doing all the quests for your secondary character ruins the whole idea of quests.
What's the point of a Paladin having Ro Armour she didn't forge herself? Or at the very least trade for with her own loot? I will admit that my Paladin has Ro Legs that I didn't quest for myself... I traded a Forest Loop that I looted myself for them. All the rest of my Ro Armour will be self-quested. Anything else just takes the fun out of it.

I've been camping Grimrot for an entire weekend straight worth of PH's, camping out between PH. I cant get him to spawn, i finally did but then attempting to login my CLR, EQ crashed and i lost it to rotting. I had killed the PH at 10 am, and grimrot spawned somewhere around 3am. So lets try and clear stuff up in some replies to this post.
FACT OR MYTH:
1.) Killing the PH at "X" time results in "Y" version of Grimrot Spawning. (if fact, what time results what grimrot)
2.) Killing the skeletons in the surrounding area, excluding the putrid skeleton PH, hurts or helps the spawning of Grimrot (if fact, which one)
--Now i'll go and answer some that I know the answer to--
3.) You cannot check your faction status with Camlend Serbold to see if you're faction is high enough
Myth - tell Camlend "I came to defend life" and if he says sorry that he only entrusts the quest to his most loyal members, then you need to up it, if he goes on and tells you about Lord Grimrot, you're in the clear!
4.) Dark Elves are screwed and cannot get this Aegis of Life
Myth - I have dark elven cleric, and they can only worth innoruuk, but your starting faction is Dubious to most of qeynos (except the caster guild, watch out!) Just hand 2GP at a time to Lashun Novashine until you can run the sash quest which i believe gives more faction "points" beware it takes about 600gp to get to Apprehensive from Dubious. But boy is it worth it!
5.) 2 People can multi-quest this if each has 1 of the parts.
Fact - as long as the designated PAL/CLR for the Aegis has at least 1 of the items. The other person can hand in theirs first, then you hand in yours last to get your Aegis. Beware, BOTH people must have the needed faction or you'll loose your items!

The spawn time is 3 hours plus a random amount of about 20 minutes. Considering a Norrathian day is 72 minutes (not the 90 many people think it is) 3 hours will be 180 minutes or 2 and 1/2 days. Every indication I have heard is that if you kill the ph (or Grim) around 5 or 6 either am or pm you will get the live version if you kill him at 6am he will spawn around 12 mindnight and be the dead version. If you kill him around 5 or 6 pm (night fall) he will spawn around 12 noon and be the live version. The 20 minutes extra more than 3 hours causes the extra 6 hour shift (making it 2 days and 18 hours rather than 2 and 1/2 days).
That seems to be what I have heard and experienced. Have mine and wear it proudly. What a pain to get.

Some of the information in this post might be redundant, but I will try to give you the facts as I know them and debunk some myth about this spawn.
I am a 43 warrior, decently equipped
Location: under one of the table looking things in the undead circle,which is almost due south of North Karana bridge, just off to the west a bit, it has nothing on top of it and two putrids spawn on opposite sides of it.
Place holder: will be the only standing putrid and usually (might be always) carries a sword
Dead Grimrot: went down like a sac of potatoes. green to me.
Live Grimrot: I could have solo'd not with ease mind you, it took 2 superior heals to completely heal me after battle was over, having read how magic resistant he was we didn't even bother to cast on him.
Spawning Grimrot live or dead: you can kill everyhting in sight including all the putrids and other skeletons in the ring and it won't affect the spawn, or you can kill nothing but place holders. Either way is fine. After having camped this place holder unsuccessfully for about a week on and of,f 6 place holders consecutively was the longest stretch, I decided to do some research. Spawn time for place holder is between 3hrs 10min and 3hrs 25 min. I have never seen it skip although some threads indicate it may. The place holder will not despawn after an hour or even two and a half. The only successful strategy I havefound and mind you this isn't conclusive, since My cleric looted the items and we got out of there and swore of South Karana for a long time, was to kill the place holders at 5am for dead version and 5pm for live version (times are game times). The dead one (supposedly the more difficult) spawned after the first try of killing a place holder at 5am. The Live one spawned on the second try (5pm). so all and all our success rate with the 5 o'clock thing was 66%. considering everything else failed all the time this may just be the answer. killing at 3 o'clock am or pm yielded nothing everytime
Maybe a little long winded but hopefully you wont be spending a rediculous amount of time here. Good luck fellow adventurers.

With regard to Cramlend Serbold (in the Qeynos UFO) who gives the quest, you can verify you have sufficient faction to do the quest by saying "Yes I will defend life".
If he answers with a statement saying "its a delicate matter for only our most trusted people" (or something along those lines), you do not have enough faction yet. I got this at kindly & low warmly.
After giving some more gold to Lashun Novashine (2 gold at a time, another 6pp), I again stated "Yes I will defend life", & got the response "then go to the plains of karana.............".
After which I gave him the lore, no drop scythe (from live Grimrot) & heart (from undead Grimrot) & got my Aegis of Life.
Also, the spawn on Grimrot or his ph is 3hrs & 20 mins. I soloed the undead Grimrot easily at level 40 (wielding the Ghoulbane which procced a few times) & defeated the live Grimrot with myself & a level 40 ranger (Losing about 6 bubs between us during the course of the fight).
His weapon is The pestilence scythe (strong version). It procced Vampiric Curse quite a bit which results in losing around 23 strength, so go in light or you could be fairly encumbered.
**Warning the live Grimrot resisted all spells cast on him including snare, the best approach being straight melee. Get in there & beat him to death & you will be fine.

Yep he sure does with the way to check your faction. I have yet to test the spawn time, i got lucky and head undead spawn on me, now for live :)

I camped him, i got a skelli one and it dropped a decayed heart and a pestilence skythe that is lore but not no drop. are these the correct items to turn in? please let me know if you have completed this quest..Vamiprace *grins evily*

The scythe that you got from the dead Grimrot is NOT the one for the quest. When you kill the live version of Grimrot, he will actually have 2 scythes the NO DROP one is the one you need for the quest. The scythe that you found, which you will also find on the live version, is the scythe he is using to beat you head in. :)

The Priests of Tunare are who you need faction with. It needs to be warmly before Serbold will even give you the quest. I would suggest not killing too many putrid skeletons at the camp for it though. I did and, although I get the Aegis, I have to sneak around Qeynos now and dodge the Corrupt Guards. They almost got me a couple times trying to turn the items in.

I'm gonna be camping Grimrot on the Cazic thule server for as long as it takes for me to get live grim. dead grim I got lucky with he was just standing there when i walked up. so if anyone needs the dead version and sees me there feel free to kill the dead if he pops. thats all have a nice day

Now i (Melyodas of Mithmarr server) am not saying this is the correct way to do it but maybe you can consider this. Kill the PH at 3pm game time. Then wait 3 1/2 hours do whatever kill skeletons, camp, whatever... then come back... The live version will spawn at 11am or noon game time. Now maybe this is luck but my friend (Dumarr) told me to do this as it worked about 50% of the time for him (6 out of 11 i think he told me) and it worked for me the first time. So check it out maybe its the secret. Post if you have any luck here.

I have the scythe on my druid, and the heart on my cleric. I was thinking of getting both of their factions up high enough then turning in the scythe with my druid, then the heart with my cleric. Has anyone tried this to see if this works?

I've done it with a number of other quests, and it's always worked for me.

I've done it with various pieces of the shaman armor quest. Just make sure both charcacters factions are high enough and it should work.

Camped for 3 days, finally got Live Lord Grimrot spawned! For 3 days I was killing putrid skellys on and off. I looted only bonechips. some corpses left here and there. What I did this time different was one hour before the spawntime, I started killing every skelly in sight and looted them all and kept camp very clean. I have heard from someone "do this" to make Grim spawn... I didn't belive at all but since camping 3days.. what the heck! So I tried and it WORKED!
Now I don't know if it works for Undeasd version( of course i kill ph on 5am) but i will try this method again and see :) hehehe maybe it was my turn to be randomly lucky!

I have started camping Lord Grimrot since last night. I had 4 spawns, each time it was PH skelly. I had killed all the putrid skelly during downtime for faction. I killed PH skelly as soon as it poped. I have read things what people said on forum, but as new on this quest I didn't understand well ( and pple saying many different things) Then i thought maybe it is just LUCK if he spawns or not. hmmmmm but after 4 times of PH poped I am beginning to think its not only luck... there maybe a way to Lord to spawn like everybody says. I noticed latest post is kinda old... Please are there anyone have done this quest recently? and please help me on some advise. I will very very aapreciate :)
