This quest begins with Capt Linarius in North Karana (on the bridge to South Karana).

You say, 'Hail, Capt Linarius'

Capt Linarius says 'Hail, traveler! You are free to rest within this keep or within any of my towers along the roads to Qeynos. My guards shall keep watch over you. While you tread upon the roads, be warned that there are [local dangers] as well as rumors of [corrupt guards].'

You say, 'What local dangers?'

Capt Linarius says 'My guards report daily to me of dangers in the plains. Lately, they've been telling me of rumors of [Lord Grimrot].'

You say, 'Who is Lord Grimrot?'

Capt Linarius says 'My guards have heard rumors of this Lord Grimrot. It is said that he is a powerful shadowknight who is raising an army of undead. Such things should be reported to the Temple of Life. Journey to Qeynos and speak with Camlend Serbold. Tell him of Lord Grimrot.'

Do as Linarius says, and journey to Qeynos. Camlend is inside the priest guild in North Qeynos.

You say, 'Hail, Camlend Serbold'

Camlend Serbold says 'I say, good to meet you, Sephira! I am Camlend Serbold. Some call me Serbold the Great. I am the leader of the righteous order of paladins which serves the Temple of Life. Together with the clerics of this temple, we defend the will of the great [Rodcet Nife] and smite all who dare to oppose us.'

You say, 'I like Rodcet Nife, he's a nice guy'

Camlend Serbold says 'Do you feel your heart beating within your chest!!? It is Rodcet Nife, the Prime Healer, whose breath keeps it in perfect rhythm. If you do not pray to His glory then I assure you, someday when your heart begins to slow, you shall be crying out loud to Rodcet Nife.'

You say, 'Who is Lord Grimrot?'

Camlend Serbold says 'You have heard of Lord Grimrot? He is a shadowknight working with the Bloodsabers. We have word he is trying to build an army of undead. Only a powerful knight can rid the lands of Grimrot. So, did you come here to [defend life]?'

You say, 'I came here to defend life.'

Camlend Serbold says 'Then go to the Plains of Karana. Somewhere there, Lord Grimrot is hatching his little plan for the Bloodsabers. Bring me his evil scythe and his heart. It is said that upon his death, his soul will be absorbed into this weapon of darkness. Do this and be rewarded.'

Camlend Serbold says 'We must have both Lord Grimrot's scythe, Pestilence, and his misshapen heart.'

Go to South Karana. Not far from the end of the bridge is an undead camp. Lord Grimrot's placeholder is the only putrid skeleton that is standing. It always carries a cute little rusty bastard sword. Respawn is approximately 180-220 minutes.

The live version only spawns during the day, and drops two Pestilence Scythes. The one with the proc is the one you need to turn-in.

The undead version only spawns at night, and drops the Decaying Heart.

Slaying the undead version of Lord Grimrot gives you the following faction hits,

Bloodsabers -200
Guards of Qeynos +30
Opal Dark Briar - 20
Priests of Life +50
Corrupt Qeynos Guards -10

Turn in both these items:

Camlend Serbold says 'We thank you for your service. With Lord Grimrot's evil soul trapped in this scythe, all but the truly evil shadowknights would be able to wield it. I would like to present you with this as a token of our appreciation. Your devotion to life is supreme. Go now, and serve life.'

Your faction standing with Priests of Life has been adjusted by 5
Your faction standing with Knights of Thunder has been adjusted by 1
Your faction standing with Guards of Qeynos has been adjusted by 2
Your faction standing with Bloodsabers has been adjusted by -1
Your faction standing with Antonius Bayle has been adjusted by 1

Increase faction for quest

To get to Ally pretty fast, just do a mule SK and kill the Koalindl fish (they are level 1), check if there is a Koalindl corpse, if there is log out and bring in your main, loot fish and give to pally in pool. Do this 6 or 7 times and you should get to ally. :)
The Skinny

Since there is 9 pages of posts on this quest, I figure I should recap how I got this thing done finally.

1. Lord Grimrot and his undead counterpart will spawn at any time, the 5am thing didnt help me get him to spawn any faster. In all the time I was lookin for him he appeared 2 times as live and once as dead. Killing all the skelis doenst matter either, I tried everything, the only way to get him to pop is to kill the one standing putrid then come back bout 2.5 hours later and kill him again. From my experence Lord Grimrot, either live or dead, spawns 1 in 10 times, so if you need a particular pop (i.e. dead one) your chances are more like 1 in 20.
2. With the new faction, allied, you can now safely know if you are rdy to complete this quest, simply kill enough skelis to get to allied with the Preists of Life and you can do the quest.
3. From what I have seen the Lore Scythe is just some noob weapon, you can destroy it, all Camlend Serbold wants is the heart and the No Drop Scythe.

Time of PH Kill does NOT trigger Grimrot
# Jan 28 2002 at 5:13 PM Rating: Decent
I have been doing this quest for my cleric, and the information in this forum has been very helpful.

Just to clarify what seems to be a misconception in some threads: killing the PH at a certain time does NOT trigger a spawn of Grimrot. Whenever the PH is killed, irrespective of the EQ time, the next spawn is either another PH or Grimrot.

The only reason to kill the PH at a specific time is to have a chance that the Grimrot YOU NEED will spawn. If the respawn is during the day, it will be the PH or live Grimrot; if at night, the PH or dead Grimrot. Hence, if you have the heart from the dead Grimrot already, you want to time the killing of each PH so that the next spawn will be in the daytime. That way, you have a chance to get the live version.

If you need both quest items, you're wasting time by not killing the PH as soon as it spawns. I found the PH uncamped, killed it at 11 PM game time, and got the live Grimrot on the next spawn.

Hope this helps, and good luck to all!
It's Finally Over!

After 6 solid days of camping Grimrot (including setting my alarm and getting up in the middle of the night at spawn times), I am thrilled to say that I finished this quest last night.
The only advice I can offer others is to be patient :). While I was there I tried everything: killing all the skellies, killing only putrids, killing none of them, killing PH at recommended times (i.e. am or pm for specific Grimrot), killing PH as soon as he spawns, etc etc etc. My experience was that none of these things affected the spawn. I saw 2 undead Grimrots and 1 live, all the rest were standing putrid PH's.
So, just stick with it and eventually you will get your reward... and then it's all worth it! Good Luck!
Grimrot - experiences
# Jan 24 2002 at 6:38 AM Rating: Default
It took 3 weeks for me to get Grimrot. Yep 3 weeks of camping him on and off. Got 5 live ones before I got the undead version. Tried everyone's theories about times etc and what worked for me in the end was this: kill the placeholder between 6am and 9am to spawn the undead one. Kill the PH between 6pm and 9pm to get the live one. The PH will spawn on time, when Grimrot spawns, it was always a bit late.

At 50, undead grimmy is so green - live Grimrot is light blue - had a paladin do the killing for me anyway and the pally managed to bash and interrupt that harm touch. Interesting to know, 'cos harmtouch is a skill not a spell. Another time a lion ran thru just as live Grimmy spawned and Mr Lion got the harmtouch instead LOL. As for faction, well I stopped bothering to kill the putrids after the first week, but killing 5 Grimrots made me Ally. I still fed 400 gold coins "just to be sure" even though I knew my faction must've been high enough (I wasn't going thru all that again). The corrupt guards have become threatening, most are green tho at my level and are no problem except for Dagarok who's also 50.

Oh yeah, watch out for stupid aviaks attacking the skels. I've lost the PH to those birds. The dwarf skelly others mention is for a Kaladim quest and is unrelated to Grimrot or Granex the undead gnoll needed for monks. Grahnex spawns near a tree on the edge of the camp. Also, sometimes live Grimrot will spawn in the middle of the night, just to mess with you. Very glad that's over and good luck to anyone else attempting it.

52 paladin. killed the skeletal form and it droped the heart and the scyth. Is it tru grimrot spawns faster if you dont kill the putrid skellys when your waiting? or its it a make belefe story like to closet monster?

Killing the other skeltons, putrid or not, makes no difference. I have timed 12 spawns, and they all were about 3 hrs 10 minutes to 3 hr 20 minutes. Sometimes I killed nothing, other times I wiped out the entire camp. made no difference. Kill the standing putrid, and EVENTUALLY, the one you want will pop.

I was wandering SK at level 20 (looking for an aviak group) when i saw an iskar monk kill Lord Grim. He let me loot the sycthe, since he thought it was for a pally quest, and left. I didnt think about it much till i heard people talking in OOC about the grimrot spawn. So, at lvl 34, i decided to camp him. when i did, another person was already there, so i just went off and did some stuff. The next day, I was wandering back through SK, my pockets full of gold, when i see the undead grimrot up. I think "woah" and proceed to fear him. I get a lot of skeles, but with instrument of nife and lay on hands, i killed him with no problem. I get my heart and head to qeynos, thinking "wow, an 8 - 16 hour quest, and i spent a total of 20 minutes on it" I was sure i'd be able to turn them in, having a faction of warmly, when i hail the npc (hes the one against the wall in the temple of life, dont know the name.) i say "lord grimrot", follow the cue, and he basically tells me i dont have enough faction. so i do the lashun novashine gold quest 10 times. i try it again. still not high enough. so i go to the bank, get 1000 gold, and procced to go through the motions. 750 gold and 2 hours later (i had to take a break and kill something) i stagger up to him, follow the cues, and lo and behold, my faction is high enough. I give him the stuff, get my shield, and am now the proud owner of an Aegis of Life. Its sitting snugly on my back, and im quite proud of it. Now if only i could bash with it on my back...

What I did
# Dec 27 2001 at 7:28 PM Rating: Decent
1. Kill the PH at 5am EQ time (the only standing Putrid Skeleton). I charmed him (with my Enc) and took him down to the river away from any passers by so I could kill him at the right time.

2. Come back 3 hours later. The undead version should pop around 3 hours 10 mins to 3 hours 40 mins later. Did for me.

3. To get the live version, kill the PH at 5pm (to 7pm possibly) game time and you should get the live version on the next spawn. I stumbled upon the live version so I have not tested this one out.

Now I just need to work on faction. Good luck to all who attempt this quest. )

DWARF SKELETON
# Dec 18 2001 at 5:56 AM Rating: Decent
Spent the last 15 hours or so camping Lord Grimrot after being exceptionally lucky with the live one. (Thanks to aiyu and dobri) I've been killing the PH's as they pop and just come back 3 hrs. 10min. later. (or up to 3hrs. 25min.)
Anyway this last time, about the 5th in succession, neither a PH or Grim popped..
I happened to notice one thing though.. a seemingly rare spawn called "a dwarf skeleton" was at the camp when i logged on. I usually dont wipe out the camp so i ignored him. After waiting for grim to spawn and he was a bit late i looked around the camp. I saw the dwarf skeleton depop!... either he had just popped and then depopped instantly or stood up from his pile of bones position and collapsed again then depopped. Also grimrot never spawned.. server came down half hour after his spawn time interval and he never showed. Don't know if theres a coralation but.. hmm.. just a thought if anyone has the time to test. The dwarf skeleton was either killed or not up last several PH's../shrug good luck hope this leads to something.

The dwarf skel is the placeholder for Granhex a lvl 16 or 17 gnoll sk. He is part of the monk red headband quest. I do not believe he has anything to do with Grimrot's spawn cycle.

The CORRECT INFO
# Dec 13 2001 at 7:55 PM Rating: Decent
Ok ive been doing this camp for the past 3 days now... The full truth on spawning him is to kill the PH(The only standing Putrid Skeleton) between 6am and 9am for Undead verion of Grimrot. And for live version of Grimrot kill the PH between 6pm and 9pm. These are EQ time not RL time. Spawn time is 3 and a half hours on the dot. And beware of KSers or people who think they just kill the PH at anytime to get him to spawn. Make sure to shout it out what you are doing and ask for people to leave the camp alone till you are done. Well im havin great fun with it on my back and i wish you all luck!

Most people would normally equip this item in the back slot for adventuring use.

When equipped as a shield, however, it has an unusual and rather cool-looking graphic. On a dark elf, it is a silver cross on a red background. The red and silver colours are the same as those on the Mistmoore Shield.

I sometimes equip it as a shield instead of my SBS, when I'm showing off :)

In response to the three previous posts:-

1) The PH is the only standing Putrid Skeleton in the undead ruins in South Karana - these ruins are south and slightly west of the bridge to NK.

2) It is possible for a Dark Elf Cleric to obtain this item (I am one and I did). However you will need to do a large amount of faction work. It took me many hours to achieve Ally faction with the Priests of Life.

There is another rare spawn in these ruins, which is Ghanex Drah (a named undead gnoll) for the monk red headband quest. This quest is a pre-requisite for the monk epic. If Ghanex Drah spawns, kill him - he may drop a head which is greatly desired by monks.

I sick of hearing people talk about this being hard. Take a look at the quest for the Silent Watch Shield, it had me going from Gfay to Qeynos to Lake Rathetear & the fish u have to find is fast, small as a trout, & wonders the zone making u have to get a tracker with only a 10ac 10wis stats but its a symbol of what u have done. If u are a pally get both then when u are 1HS u got 2 great shields that show where u have been.

Think about it the Soulfire stats are not very good but its what it stands for that counts.

After camping Grimrot for over four months whenever I had the chance and putting up with ksers while I was there, I have finally completed my Aegis quest thanks to a friend that had the heart.
I had the scythe.
This quest can be multy quested, however it is best if both parties involved in trying this are at least considered kindly by the priest of life before attempting it.
I love the item, and am wearing it proudly on my back.

Initializing the quest & knowing when you have enough factio
# Oct 15 2001 at 12:19 AM Rating: Decent
To start the Quest tell Camlend Serbold "I came here to defend life" If you receive a response, you've succeeded in attaining enough faction for the quest. I completed this quest solo with my dark elf cleric at level 40. I had the aid of a few friends boosting faction in the pool of Jahndra by having them kill the fish and I turning it in. You need amiable faction to start turning in fish. To get up to amiable faction I recommend you turn in 2 gold at a time to Lashun Novashine and the rabbid wolf/bear pelts quest. I'd like to thank Summoneaa Saindiva for his detailed walk through, it helped immensly. Also Lenore Dachmuir's guidance on alternating the deaths to spawn the other version helped greatly. =) Good words of wisdom - follow them closely and you shall be rewarded
