Eron Nurwistle may be found on top of a windmill, at +800, -550. You must have a minimum skill of 250 in Fletching (confirm?) to receive this task. The task can be requested out of order but must be completed in order (using components from the previous task).

At the end of "Scrap Oil":

Eron Nurwistle says 'Yes, that setting works great. For your next task, you will need to test your [fletching] skills.'

You say, 'fletching?'

Eron Nurwistle says 'This next task does not have anything to do with my revenge, but it instead has to do with my curiosity. I found a book, but it is missing a few pages. From what I can tell it is an instruction book, but with the missing pages I cannot read it. I have gotten enough information though to figure that it leads to making an arrow. I am not sure of why someone made it so difficult to get the recipe, but it is. I have determined that you will be able to find the missing pages off of some of denizens within a crypt in the Hills of Shade. I expect that this will be dangerous, and I will only offer this task to someone with an expert skill at fletching. Do you think you are [ready] for this task?'

You say, 'I am ready'

  • You have been assigned the task 'Counting Shadows'.

You receive Damaged Book of Shadow Counting
You receive Eron's Steel Reconfiguration Pattern

Eron Nurwistle says 'This time I will give you the pattern you need for another reconfiguration setting once we have determined what the book's instructions lead too. I have given you two items, a guide to your next configuration, and the damaged instruction book.'

Eron wants you to complete the book he has given you and give him an example of what is in it.

You should be able to find the missing pages within the hills of shade. Once you do, repair the book with a book binding.

All three pages drop in the same area.. the crypt of shade (a tunnel system in the south of the zone). Make sure that you have someone who can do AE spell damage or sees SoS so that you can also kill Slithering Shades at the same time (for the essence required in a later stage).

  • Loot 1 Shadow Counting Page 2 - 0/1 - (Hills of Shade)

Drops off a crypt ghoul or off Festerclaw.

  • Loot 1 Shadow Counting Page 3 - 0/1 - (Hills of Shade)

    Drops off a phoboplasm.

  • Loot 1 Shadow Counting Page 5 - 0/1 - (Hills of Shade)

    Drops off a frenzied ancestor.

  • Repair the book with a Book Binding - 0/1 - (ALL)

Make sure to scribe the recipe from Eron first, then combine all of the Shadow Counting Pages and Damaged Book of Shadow Counting in the Book Binding.

    This creates Shadow Counting.

  • Follow the directions in the book - 0/1 - (Hills of Shade)

For this stage you will need to collect three Gem Covered Box from each camp. They are lore, however all three of them have different item id's and can be confused with each other so keep them separate from each other.

Hills of Shade: Aviak Camp (not too uncommon off trash. Always dropped by Ebontail and The Collector).
Dragonscale Hills: Brownie Camp (not too uncommon off trash. Uncommon drop by Tangler Timbleton).
Loping Plains: Orcs (dropped by shamans and mystics. Always dropped by Bloodmoon Warlock).

To make your shadow boxes you will need combine the following in a Fletching Kit IN THIS EXACT ORDER and position yourself AT THE ALTAR (/loc 2500, 757 large island to the North)

    1. Gem Covered Box (doesn't matter which one) and 1 x Celestial Essence - Trivial 0 (12 AM Combine. Get your combine ready before.)
    2. Gem Covered Box (doesn't matter which one) and 1 x Vodka - Trivial 0 (between 1 AM and 11 AM)
    3. Gem Covered Box (doesn't matter which one) and 1 x Juice of Quellious - Trivial 0 (11 AM Combine. Get your combine ready before.)

Follow the book instructions precisely. If you do not make your shadow boxes in the correct order then you will lose that combine and will have to get another Gem Covered Box for that combine. You will see this message if so.

The box disintegrates in your hand. Maybe you did something incorrectly.

NOTE: If you fail any of the combines above, I believe you can stop and recover the box you lost and return at the appropriate time to pick up where you left off. This will not be true going forward as placement of each box causes invisible flags which you will have to reset. If you fail after this point you need to destroy all boxes you still have and turn in your shadow counting book to Eron to reset your invisible flags so you can restart this leg of the quest.

When choosing how to place your Shadow Box's on the altar in Hills of Shade, you will only have 1 minute real time, not game time to place the boxes. Make sure no one else is around you doing the same thing or else a error message will pop up on both of your screens.

WARNING: If you place the boxes in the wrong order, at the wrong time or if you open the wrong box after they have been placed, you will either suffer a 325K death touch or be swarmed and killed by MOB's that spawn and attack you! Even worse, you will lose all three (3) boxes and have to try again!

At 12 PM (noon or mid-day) game-time. This is when you will need to place all three Shadow Box on the altar in the proper order.

    4. At 12 PM (noon), first, stand on the south of the altar, face north, put any Shadow Box in an open inventory slot (bag slot) and right-click it to place it on the altar.
    5. Next, move to the west of the altar, face east, put any Shadow Box in an open inventory slot (bag slot) and right-click it to place it on the altar.
    6. Lastly, move to the east side of the altar, face west, put the last Shadow Box in an open inventory slot (bag slot) and right-click it to place it on the altar.
    7. Now you need to wait for 1 PM game-time to open the correct box... while you wait, move to the west of the altar and face east.
    8. At 1 PM game-time, target and open (/open) the box nearest to you (it has a neat opening effect)... the other two boxes will disappear.
    9. Now loot the Shadowspike Arrow Tip Mold, Black Gem Grade Faycite and Making Shadowspike Arrows from inside that box! Make sure to scribe it before moving onto the next step.

  • Create 2 Shadowspike Arrow's using tradeskills - 0/2 - (ALL)

For the Shadowspike Arrow Tip use a Forge to combine the following. Smithing trivial 100

    1 x Celestial Essence
1 x Small Piece of High Quality Steel
1 x Shadowspike Arrow Tip Mold

  • For the Shadowspike Arrow use a Fletching Kit to combine the following. Fletching Trivial 400.

    1 x Shadowspike Arrow Tip
    1 x Swirling Shadow Essence
    1 x Small Groove Nocks
1 x Set of Ceramic Arrow Vanes
1 x Bundled Ceramic Arrow Shafts
1 x Vial of Viscous Mana

If you multitasked whilst collecting pages for Shadow Counting, then you should already have plenty of Swirling Shadow Essence. Make sure to get some extra's in case you fail the combine.

  • Deliver 1 Shadowspike Arrow to Eron Nurwistle - 0/1 - (Dragonscale Hills)

    Receive Eron's Reconfiguring Steel

  • Deliver 1 Shadow Counting to Eron Nurwistle - 0/1 - (Dragonscale Hills)

    Receive Eron's Steel Reconfiguration Pattern

  • Reconfigure the jewelry with the pattern given - 0/1 - (ALL)

    Make Eron's Reconfigured Jewelry.

Combine the following in a Jewelry bag,

1 x Black Gem Grade Faycite
    1 x Eron's Tertiary Setting Jewelry
    1 x Eron's Steel Reconfiguration Pattern
    1 x Uncut Demantoid

For the non melee version, stick it back into a Jewelry bag and hit combine again. It should convert it. You can convert it back and forth.

  • Show Eron your progress on the Jewelry - 0/1 - (Dragonscale Hills)

Your task 'Counting Shadows' has been updated.

Eron is satisfied with the work you have done so far on his jewelry.

You have gained 2 ability points! You now have 2 ability points.
    You gain experience!!

Eron Nurwistle says 'Yes, that reconfiguration works much better. For your next task, you will need to test your [brewing] skills.'

You have successfully been granted your reward for: Counting Shadows

grabbed all this from posts all over the place.

    buy or make
    1 x Celestial Essence
    1 x Vodka
    1 x Juice of Quellious
1 x fletching kit and make sure to have an inventory space free
camp and loot all 3 boxes

Combine the celestial essence box at midnight "12am" game time , then the vodka box immediately after.
WAIT TILL 12pm "NOON" GAME TIME
    Then do all this:
    1. Combine the last gem covered box with juice of quellious in your fletching kit.
    2. Drop your fletching kit on the ground.
    3. Move the first shadow box into your empty inventory slot.
    4. Move south of the altar, face north, right-click the first shadow box.
    5. Move the second shadow box into your empty inventory slot.
    6. Move west of the altar, face east, right-click the second shadow box.
    7. Move the third shadow box into your empty inventory slot.
    8. Move east of the altar, face west, right-click the third shadow box.
    9. Target the middle shadow box, /open.

NOTE: Keep boxes in order after combines because they are named the same don't let them get confused. have 3 slots in a bag free and place them in order like 1 2 3 so u know what each one is when you go to place them.

Yes they are Lore, meaning you will only be able to loot one from each camp. But even though they have the same name; you can have all 3 of these Lore boxes with the same name in your bags if you have one from each different camp!!!!!

I believe you have to get one box from each area in the quest? I thought it might be you can get three from one area. Either that or you combine the box to get a shadow box then go & get another...

    Aviak Camp
The Aviaks are in the center part of the zone on the west edge in a circular area with two entrances, one to the south and one to the east.

I initially set up camp on the east entrance.
Watch out for the the ravens, they just roam the entire area inside the circle. It was too hard to camp close to the mobs with the ravens coming by.

Finally I moved outside the circle and slightly south of the East Entrance. No roamers there. If you can pull a mob outside, you are good to go.

The mobs are paired up nicely and you will have to separate them. Root, Feign death, harmony, whatever you have. Best to clear those ravens though.

    Did I mention Ravens?
Ravens will spin and blind you. Not too bad, but be aware.

I had feign death with my necro. This camp is excellent with it.
Snare a mob, run out and around the corner. If anyone but the slowed mob shows up, feign death.
Wait for the 1 minute timer to go off (I have a sound effect for it) and stand up. The snared mob always returns by himself because the ravens were cleared.

Rooting is tough but Harmony should work well, but untried by me.

    NOTE on Brownie Camp:
A level 75 name (Tangler Timbleton), she was up when I came over. There was only one guard with her. I invis'd and ran up to her. A wuss mob compared to the other zones.

Location of Altar in Hills of Shade
    P -757.0878, -2499.5913, 52.0098, 0, 0, 0, 3, Altar (maps\hillofshade_3.txt)
    /loc = 2500, 757, 54

Casters can bind at the Altar
You make the Shadow Box's at the altar.
The placement of the boxes is on the Altar
Your death may be on the Altar

Looting the box on the altar
I opened my box and there were the 3 items but I said loot all and only got 1 item, yet the box poofed as if I got them all. But I petitioned and got them put into my inventory. My complements to the GM's at SOE for their support.

    My Arrow Combine
I had ingredients for 6 combines. I had 2 failures and 2 successes with an unmodified fletching skill of 268 and modified to 289. With all my fletching AA's and 5/6 of Salvage, I Salvaged both my Swirling shadow essence on my 2 losses but I had 4 extra just in case :)

There's a whole lot of good and bad info out there on this step of the task. I don't like a whole bunch of research to find which posts are good and bad, but I found this link:
    http://www.eqoutrider.net/forum/viewtopic.php?t=3183&postdays=0&postorder=asc&start=15&sid=ab2de04d3854619c620dfedd9fcbac30

The guy assembled together the useful and accurate info and put it all in one place.

Ok, i have done this 5 F****** times now, and all 5 times i die placing the boxes. i've tried doing it different ways from what is noted just to see if i am messing something up, yet it makes no difference- i get hit w/ the 325k DT every time i try to place the second box. Could someone please offer a word of advice what i might be doing wrong? I'm getting really tired of farming these things........

I followed the directions on the link below, and it worked out fine. Turns out you can't be standing on the alter itself to place the boxes, but rather beside the alter as the link suggests. Anyway, found that helpful, and hope others will to

Maybe you did someting incorrectly." needless to say, im stumped. any suggestions? gem box + celestial essence at midnight (12 AM) in planar fletching kit....fails. fletching skill is 336 but i doubt that matters

Since it took scowering many posts on many sites to finally get all the correct info for this task, here's what you need to do. Make sure you have an empty top inventory slot.

    Uncover Boxes
Box 1 (any of the 3 boxes)
Combine this and celestial essence at midnight game time in a fletching kit of your choice.

Box 2 (any of the 2 remaining boxes)
Combine this and vodka anytime after Box 1 but before noon game time in a fletching kit of your choice.

Box 3 (the last box =P)
Combine this and a Juice of Quellious at Noon game time in a fletching kit of your choice.

    Place Boxes
Box 1 (any of the 3 boxes)
Place this box in the center of the altar. Stand on either of the long sides of the altar facing it. Have it in a top inventory slot and right-click it to "place" it on the altar.

Box 2 (any of the 2 remaining boxes)
Place this box on the east side of the altar if it's sunny, on the west if it is cloudy/foggy. Stand on the correct side of the altar facing it. Have it in a top inventory slot and right-click it to "place" it on the altar.

Box 3 (the last box =P)
Place this box on the west side of the altar if it's sunny, on the east if it is cloudy/foggy. Stand on the correct side of the altar facing it. Have it in a top inventory slot and right-click it to "place" it on the altar.

    Opening the Correct Box
Check the in-game time. /Open the box that corresponds with the time in the table below.

Box1 Box2 Box3 (numbered in order of placement, center is 1...)
    6am 7am 8am
    9am 10am 11am
    noon 1pm 2pm

At midnight I combined the first 2 gem boxes then waited to 12pm to do 3rd. Right after that I placed box 1 in the center, facing north while standing in front of the alter I moved to the west end of it, placed box 2, then to the east end and placed box 3. Soon as they were all in place I opened Box #1 in the center. All this was done while it was still 12pm.
Good luck. I spent all day reading posts and trying to figure this out so I wouldn't have to do it again.
Also in regards to A Slithering Shade mob the he crypts ... They are not on Ranger track so You can't track hem. To get them to spawn I had to cast an AE spell at the 3 urns in one of the rooms there in the crypt. These mobs drop the swirling shadow essence.

We don't know if the time you open the box is the time the game checks, or the time you place the first box, or the time you place the last box.

The only way to be sure is to play and open the box at the same in-game hour. That gives you 3 mins max to place and open the boxes.

I followed these steps and got swarmed by MOB's that spawned... it was ugly.

I now understand that if you do not od this fast enough, you will fail.

I hear a better option is to wait until 1PM and open the 2nd box you placed, instead.

Doesn't always work, it seems. I waited for the next game hour, opened box 2, and got the DT.

It seems you have to place and open at the same game hour, or you'll get the DT regardless of which box you open.

Can the boxes be pre-looted? I picked up one during a brownie slaughter the other day and I'm hoping I can still use it in the future.

Yes they can be prelooted, but remember which mobs you got them from cause if you mess up something while doing the altar part and loose a box, then you can just goto that mob and kill to get another...otherwise you wont know which mob the box came from as all 3 are the same name.

Can anyone confirm a required level to be assigned this task? I've got a Ranger that has just hit Endless Quiver and Archery Mastery, I've got the requisite tradeskill levels, and I'm going to be sinking AAs into Salvage and Fletching Mastery if I can do this at 62. Forget the end result, just gimme the arrows! I'll deal with the necklace in 15 levels and 800 AAs.

Must be 75 to get the task, but the arrow is flagged as Expendable which means you only get 1 shot with it even if you have Endless Quiver.

In order to even get this task, you must have a minumum of 250 in ALL tradeskills, not just fletching. This is not primarily a fletching task so much as a part of a much larger quest.

Dammit, and dammit. So much for archery being a useful skill for more than just 3 levels again. ***** you, Sony.

The Gem Covered Boxes that drop in Dragonscale Hills, Loping Plains and Hills of Shade are also part of this quest. I got the DSH box off the named Brownie and the Loping Plains box off a Bloodmoon Shaman. I've seen the Hills of Shade gem covered box drop at the borrows/birds camp - going there now to get one for myself.

just a nice friendly tip after spending 20+ hours camping lolping plains for the gem covered box from a none existant named that never spawns.
these are lore items however once you have done the combine in fletching kit you no longer have the lore item. I used the Hills of shade box and dragonscale hills drop x2 just have to do some leg work but DSH one drops every time and named always up could easily do this quest with all 3 from same mob just need to goto HoS and do combine or corpse them before looting next box.

Where exactly do you have to stand when doing the combine in fletching kit? It looks like the island in HoS fits the description, but I can't get it to work. Also, is the combine just the gem covered box in the fletching kit by itself?

Pulled from elsewhere on the web:

Step 1: Loot 1 Shadow Counting Page 2 (Crypt of Hills of Shade, a crypt ghoul)

Step 2: Loot 1 Shadow Counting Page 3 (Crypt of Hills of Shade, a phoboplasm)

Step 3: Loot 1 Shadow Counting Page 5 (Crypt of Hills of Shade, a frenzied ancestor)

Step 4: Repair the book with a book binding (Combine: Shadow Counting Page 2, Shadow Counting Page 3, Shadow Counting Page 5, and the Damaged Book in a Book Binding). Be sure you had scribed the note which you recieved when you had been issued the task, mine didnt scribe the first time.

Step 5: Follow the directions in the book (Hills of Shade)

How the directions described in the book all translate:

You must loot 3 NO DROP Gem Covered Boxes from 3 differnt zones:

    Hills of Shade: Aviak Camp
    Dragonscale Hills: Brownie Camp
    Loping Plains: Orcs

The HoS and DS drops are pretty easy to obtain, they drop uncommonly off of the reg mobs at these 2 camps and drop 100% of the time off of certain names.

The Loping Plains drop is a bit more difficult, I had no luck obtaining one off of reg orcs, I have only seen this drop off of "Bloodmoon Warlock". He is at a small orc camp (approx 5 orcs positioned in a circle with "a sleeping bloodmoon orc" in the center) and is an uncommon spawn. The camp is close to the stables and horses.

Once you have all 3 boxes grab a fletching kit, 1 vodka, 1 juice of quellious, and 1 celestial essence. Head to the largest island in HoS close to where Castell Cloudskate is. There you will find the alter.

You will need to be in close proximity of the alter to do the combines. I would also suggest organizing your inventory. This next step you will be flagging the order of your boxes (1,2, and 3). The problem is all the boxes once combined all have the same name "Shadow Box", so you need need to keep track of which one is which.

Combine Gem Covered Box with Celestial Essence near Midnight to create Shadow Box. This will be the first alter placement.

Combine Gem Covered Box with Vodka at any time of day. This will be the second alter placement.

Combine Gem Covered Box with Juice of Quellious near Noon. This will be the third alter placement.

Between the hrs of 6am and 6pm the boxes may be placed on the rectangular alter. You must rt.click the boxes from an inventory slot to place them and stand at the appropriate position of the alter.

The in game weather dictates the placement of boxes 2 and 3.

Box 1 (the celestial essence box) always goes in the center.

Box 2 (the vodka box) gets placed E if sunny. If it is cloudy/foggy, box 2 the gets placed west.

Box 3 (the juice of quellious box) get placed at the last open position, opposite of box 2's placement. So if you placed Box 2 on west side, then you must place box 3 on east side and vice versa.

Ok, with placement set we need to figure out which box we need to open, for that we must know the time of day. At 6am Box #1 is the one you need to open. For every in game hr, advance 1 box, so at 7am box #2 would be the one to open, At 8am box #3, At 9am back to box #1, and so on until 6pm. Use /open to open the targetted box. Be warned, you only have approx 1.5mins to place the 3 boxes and open the correct box... 1.5mins is plenty of time to do this comfortably, just don't dilly daddle.

If you mess up on placement, open the incorrect box, or run out of time you will suffer a 325k DT as well as you will lose all 3 boxes and need to refarm the new boxes.

If you choose the correct box you will see an opened box infront of you, inside it will be a shadowspike arrow tip mold, a black gem grade faycite and a book (name?) you can scribe to get the recipies.

Step 6: Create 2 Shadowspike Arrow using tradeskills

Combine for shadowspike arrow tip (smithing, triv 100):
    - celestial essence
    - small piece of high quality steel
    - shadowspike arrow tip mold

Combine for shadowspike arrow (fletching, triv 400):
    - small grove nocks
    - set of ceramic arrow vanes
    - bundled ceramir arrow shafts
    - vial of viscous mana
    - shadowspike arrow tip
    - swirling shadow essence (drops off of Slithering Shadows in HoS crypt... these are the rk2 invis mobs)

Step 7: Deliver 1 Shadowspike Arrow to Eron Nurwistle

Step 8: Deliver 1 Shadow Counting to Eron Nurwistle
