This task will NOT update unless you are killing the Centaurs when the Shade of Corruption is up in their camp. If it isn't... you are merely ruining your faction.
You can tell it is up because the Centaurs will attack YOU (as opposed to you, them). Do NOT kill the Shade unless you want to wait for him to respawn (you need him in a later task).

You say, 'Hail, Klassr' Klassr says 'Thank you for this simple display of your trustworthiness. I thank you for understanding the need. With what has [happened] to my brothers, I am not sure whom I can trust any longer.' You say, 'What happened?' Klassr says 'I am not clear what has happened, and I would like another show of your prowess before I go into more detail about what I do know. It seems that there is a group of the centaur that has decided to take over, and is acting rather thuggish. If you are [willing], I would like you to reduce their numbers to make my mind more at ease.' You say, 'I am willing.' Klassr says 'Though it saddens me to kill my brothers, I believe that these are beyond redemption, and that killing them will ease their suffering.' You have been assigned the task 'Centaur Troubles (Part 2) - Reduce the Thug Menace'. Reduce the threat to the centaur citizens by killing some centaur thugs then report back to Klassr. Reduce the Thug Menace (0/8) - Goru'kar Mesa Need list of mobs that qualify. Faction hits from killing centaurs: Your faction standing with Foulblood Fieldstrider Centaur got worse. Your faction standing with Tuffein got better. Your faction standing with Tuffein Leadership got better. Your faction standing with Minohten got better. Your faction standing with Nymphs of the Windwillow got better. Legate Loxias and a centaur destrider do not update the task. Your task 'Centaur Troubles (Part 2) - Reduce the Thug Menace' has been updated. The direction to someone related to your current Task has been marked on your compass. Report back to Klassr (0/1) - Goru'kar Mesa You say, 'Hail, Klassr' Your task 'Centaur Troubles (Part 2) - Reduce the Thug Menace' has been updated. Your faction standing with Fieldstrider Centaur got better. Your faction standing with Minohten got better. Your faction standing with Nymphs of the Windwillow got better. You gain experience!! can confirm that killing in the area next to the quest giver with the shade down does not give an update, and the centaus' are non-aggressive.

Yup! Any centaur that is not part of this 5 person camp is hostile and counts as a thug.

Centaur Destrider DOES update the task
Any near the quest giver that I killed counted for this part of the quest.
