This task was introduced in October 2007 and is available every year around Halloween.

It begins with Grom Shives who can be found in the southwest corner of Nektulos Forest at -1915, 1200.

You say, 'Hail, Grom Shives'

Grom Shives nods solemnly at you, 'Have you also come to stand [vigil] on this day of grim history?'

You say, 'Vigil?'

Grom Shives looks at your closely, 'Ah, I see you are not familiar with the vigil for Ritrim Shives, my ancestor who cheated the creatures that dwell below the forest roots and lived to tell the [tale].'

You say, 'Tale?'

Grom Shives smiles darkly, 'The Tale is a horrifying one... in exchange for the life of his only child, these creatures agreed to bestow upon Ritrim a dark and terrible [power].'

You say, 'Power?'

Grom Shives nods, 'The power to harm any living creature with a mere touch of the hand.. After a gruesome ceremony, when he was granted the dark power, he acted quickly and used his new power to slay the creatures even as they prepared to sacrifice his child, and feast upon his flesh... in his haste to subvert the agreement, Ritrim failed to realized the [toll] that the power would take upon him.'

You say, 'Toll?'

Grom Shives chuckles, 'Using his new power drained his energy, leaving him weak and vulnerable. With his son, he moved towards his mount, a powerful black warhorse, a single enemy blocked his path... Ritrim reached out again with his power, killing his foe, but not quickly enough... a shout was given, and he felt a searing pain as his [eyes] were burned away.'

You say, 'Eyes?'

Grom Shives says 'Blinded, and in great pain, Ritrim mounted his steed to make his escape, the voice of his son guiding him as he charged through the forest of Nektulos weaving a [crooked path] in order to evade his pursuers, and return to Neriak.

You say, 'Crooked path?'

Grom Shives smiles, 'If you are really that interested, I will summon you a dark [mount] so that you may follow the path for yourself.'

You say, 'Summon me a mount.'

You have been assigned the task 'Nektulos Ghost Rider'.

You receive a Bridle of the Cursed.

Grom Shives hands you a bridle, 'When you are [ready], I will give you a mask with eyes to guide you along the path, ride with haste and reach the gates of Neriak before the fourth minute has passed.'

Let Grom know when you are ready to begin 0/1 (Nektulos Forest)

You say, 'I am ready.'

Grom Shives places a twisted rotted mask into your hands, 'This will be your only guide, ride quickly and do not hesitate... Remember, you have only four minutes to reach the gates of Neriak.

You receive a Mask of Eyes.

Ghost Rider run time

Once your map is set up, a good run (for me) is 3:20, a not-so-good run is 3:30, so there is some spare time for missed markers or other mistakes.

Do not zone into Neriak at the last marker -- that will cause a fail every time.

I don't know what a perfect time would be by horse because I always had to double back on a checkpoint or two that didn't take initially.

The copy and paste up above should go into your nektulos_2 file, not _1

Ghost Rider without horse
# Nov 05 2007 at 4:09 AM Rating: Decent
I am a bard, 73rd level.

I wanted to test a theory, and did not click the horse into existance, and ran the course using Selos Song of Travel.
I had tried many times on my druid on the horse, but this was the first time I was successful.
So, it can be done by a bard without the horse.

I do not think it could be done by someone autofollowing a bard. Too many obstructions to break the autofollow.
Fun and great reward for very little effort

WHAT IT IS:

This quest is a HORSE RACE against the clock using a black nightmare horse with fast speed (Abyssal Steed). You need to hit 10 check points, in correct order, within Nektulos Forest, inside 4 minutes. The reward is a cloak with 10-charges of "Spirit of Eagle" usable at level 15.

I think this is a fresh take on the "explore" style quests and adds a short, virtual "driving" game to EQ. I think the quest was fun and treated it as such (just like the other new events for Halloween 2007).

Personal Note: I have heard a mixed bag of reactions to this one, but I believe it is worth while. For non-SOE casters (Druid / Ranger) or those who do not bot one, this is a great toy even with only 10 charges. For the effort you put in it gives a very nice reward and takes 5-6 minutes from start to finish. After a little practice you may even feel this is relatively easy, sans server / network glitches.

TIPS:

- This can be done SOLO at pretty much any level.

- I suggest you get the task and do a practice run of the course to get the feel with out racing the clock. This will enable you to create or test your check point locations on the map. Two check points you may want to avoid hanging around at slower speeds are the BRIDGE and the ENTRANCE to Neriak. If you encounter any difficulty hitting check points, right-click the "Mask of Eyes" Grom gives you to guide and confirm map markers. It works like Tracking each time clicked.

- I had better results when I "rounded" check points fairly close or briefly slowing down just before reaching one. If you have watched downhill skiing or equestrian racing you should have a feel for this.

- You can sometimes recover from one or two missed check points (pass with out getting update and have to double back), but if you have any difficulty getting the yellow confirmation message in the middle of your screen (or do not see the green text for that check point in your Quest/Task window) you may need to go back to Grom, kill the task and start over. There is no "running timer" you can view unless you use a stopwatch, and continuing on may only frustrate you when Grom chides your lack of speed. :) I say this because sometimes the server or your client will inexplicably lag and NOT give you credit for a check point. Simply bow in submission to the server and bandwidth gods and try again.

- Trees and other odd geometry items can snag you if not careful. Shrink can help with this somewhat.

- Some people like using insta-click invis potions so the guards at the bridge and Neriak city gate do not attack, but it can be done with out invis (riskier for lower level characters).

- The Abyssal Steed can ONLY be activated in Nektulos Forest. However, once active, the horse will stay with you until the buff timer runs out (well over 300 minutes) or you enter a zone that does not allow mounts. You MUST have the task for this quest in order to activate the steed or the bridle will simply crumble to dust.

- If the Abyssal Steed touches the river water, it will VANISH from under you (nice role play detail!). Use the bridge. Might be a good idea to keep SOW or similar run speed buff up just in case.

- When you are ready to start, target Grom Shives and say "mount". This will initiate the task and give you the bridle. Click the bridle and close any extra windows. Back up into the extreme SouthWest corner behind him (ignore the red spam about the instance you are not allowed to enter). Make sure you have Grom targeted and type "ready". When you are set, start running forward and press ENTER as you pass Grom. If you did this correct, you will see a "Mask of Eyes" appear on your cursor/pointer. You do not need this if you are comfortable with the map markers.

- Most importanly, HAVE FUN with this.

Kudos to the dev(s) that came up with this quest!

I agree, expandable quests are annoying at best. Am I the only SK that is annoyed by them handing out our SK only horses for this thing, no matter how temporary?? How many attention hounds have you seen sitting on one of em in Guild hall??? Shoulda gave em them dang pally unicorns!!

while that method works... completely unnecessary to need a mage or do the trick w/ having a back up mount and getting a run for it etc lol. Only thing needed are the locs marked on map... easy win.

alot of people will disagree with you on this but this video was to show a guaruntee win. Go to the zone and see how frustrated people get that they cant complete the quest after trying over 20 times with locs. Sure its not necessary to do all or any of the tricks mentioned but it helps for people that just cant get it complete in time.
