Gearin Gaxx is located around +740, -3327 in the elven outpost.

You say, 'Hail, Gearin Gaxx'

Gearin Gaxx says, 'Welcome, friend! If armor is what you seek, let the house of Gaxx provide you with the finest. Our metalwork is second to none. Every now and again we may even create [rare armor] for the general public to purchase.'

You say, 'rare armor'

Gearin Gaxx says, 'I have found many exotic materials in Kunark with which I can create rare armor. I currently am working on the [Guard of Ik] and the [Hate Tail Guard] shields. I have no armor as of yet, but I am experimenting with new designs.'

You say, 'Guard of Ik'

Gearin Gaxx says, 'The Guards of Ik are made from shields found in the jungles. I would be selling them if it were not for the unfortunate fact that the shields are spectral and vanish overnight. Another bit of bad news is that the formula I was working on to stabilize the essence of the metal was stolen by local pirates. I need two more shields and my formula. Bring these to me and I shall not charge you.'

Trooper Shield is found on Captain of the Guard in City of Mist. You'll need to kill him twice to get two shields.

Scribbled Note [Ik Formula] drops off a pirate cartographer in Firiona Vie. Her PH is a pirate.

Give 2 Trooper Shield and 1 Scribbled Note to Gearin Gaxx to receive your Rewards:

Gearin Gaxx now appears at loc 740, -3327, 161. The shields from the Captain of the Guard in City of Mist are easy to get. I've seen four captains up at the same time. But the cartographer for the Scribbled Note is a fairly rare spawn.

Gearin Gaxx places the formula in a box which appears to have similar copies in it. Thank you! I can now reward you with this Guard of Ik shield I had lying around.

Don't bother, the Shiny Brass Shield is better than this thing is, and is dropped by an easy mob in Crushbone that can be soloed by a lvl 12'ish or grouped by lvl 7-10's or just flat out Anialated by the average levelled char. has better stats than this thing, acts as a light source, and has same ac. lighter too I think. Soooo.. question is.. who was the Dumb"poomba" who thought that this would be a great quest item to add to game? is a pain in the butt.. and not worth the effort. gimme 10 plat instead, cause that's more than anyone is gonna pay ya for it.
Fine Steel Rapier

I stumbled across the pirate cartographer and killed her. She dropped that note (after reviewing this quest, I think I'll pass on it). She also dropped Fine Steel Rapier. The odd thing is that the rapier is no drop, same as the note. I looked it up, but found nothing. Is it used for a quest? Its 5/23 if i remember correct. Maybe its just incentive to do this sorry quest, tho not much.

Update: Had this rapier identified, it is called a Gunthak Pirate Rapier. Not anywhere on Allakhazam. Let me know if you have any info on it.

Brass Shield

Getting the Shiney Brass Shield from crushbone is less risk and it has a +10 resist to magic instead of +5.....and you only need to be lvl 20 to get it. :-)
Where's our risk vs reward VI?

Exactly like everyone else said this shield is a JOKE for what it takes. You could either camp the SBS in CB or the Shield of Kurn in Kurn's Tower and come out with the same ac and five more MR. Heck if you are evil you could do the sarnak braids quest in OT and get guard of the Marines which is worse than the SBS or kurn but still pulls off more MR than this worthless thing. Not to mention that an MM shield blows them all away and is easier to get than this thing.
Verant needs to go back to the drawing board on this one and make a reward worth the risk for this, it should have better stats than an MM shield AND a cool look.

I think I can speak for everyone on this topic. Please people when you know that someone has been camping for a long time, don't pester them about when they are going to leave. Don't sit down next to them to "wait" until they are done. You might be waiting a long time and then the time it takes for you to complete your camp on top of that. The NPC will always respawn and will always be there. Just ask them kindly if they will send you a tell when they are done and 9 times out of 10 they will. These players are tired from camping that long of a period and quite understandably a little grouchy and become extremely nervous at the thought of someone possibly stealing their kill. So, be courteous.
#REDACTED, Posted: Nov 12 2000 at 11:16 AM, Rating: Sub-Default, (Expand Post) And if he goes LD and never has a chance to send you a tell? You send him one and find out he is not online so you go back to the spawn site and low and behold there is someone else there now. So you tell him how you were next in line and you know what he says? Hehe be realistic here. If it is a heavily camped spawn players will be waiting to take turns and you should expect players to be waiting around you for their chance. If you are worried about KSing bring a big group with you to bring it down quick and to make sure your group is the one to get the kill because on a camp like that you are obviously not after XP.

It happens.

Doesn't matter how many people you have there to help & make sure your "group" gets the kill, in EQ, there's always a way to KS it.

How hard would it be for Sony to put a stop to this & allow players to tag a mob, like in OoW? I'm no dev, but Blizzard did it. /shrug There's still a chance of someone KSing your mob, if they do first damage, but it's better than nothing.

To quote the manual that came with the OoW game my brother got for me:
Tagging Enemies
Once you attack a monster, you effectively tag it. That means you mark it as your opponent & only you will earn experience & the right to loot it if you kill it. Tagging prevents other players from swooping in at the last minute to kill your foe & steal its loot. You can tell if a monster is tagged by clicking on it & then looking at its name bar in the NPC portrait. If the color is gray, then the monster is tagged. If it is its normal color (red or yellow depending on its aggresiveness) then it is not tagged.

Simple as that.

I'm sure there's a host of unique situations people could come up with to say this is a bad thing. That one little paragraph obviously doesn't cover every situation. What if you get someone into group after tagging the mob who needs a possible drop that's no drop (or no trade* now)? I don't know. Haven't installed it yet. Have to get Windows XP installed first. x.x I don't know if OoW has "no trade" drops. I don't know if OoW has tradeable drops. I don't know if OoW has a mix of the two, like most EQ servers. This thread wasn't even on KSing, just the post I replied to, & I doubt I'll ever come back to it so I'll never know if there's a response. But any response can be sent as a private message as well.

Regardless, I just don't think ANYONE should have to "bring a big group to bring the mob down quick and to make sure your group is the one to get the kill (to keep from being KSed)" whether you're after XP or NOT! There's always, ALWAYS somewhere else to go for XP. & the obvious should go without saying but never does here so I'll say it anyway: If you're some high level PC camping a 30something mob for a twink alt & a lowbie comes along just trying to make a living or get an upgrade, give them 100 lousy pp for it or let them have the camp, get one for themselves, one for you, give them 100 lousy pp (or whatever the going rate is) for it later, youg get your twink item without any of the work, they get xp & hard *earned* money.
maybe........ hmmm

For real man, this shield sucks big time, go camp a lvl 12 for something that gives off light and has +5 more vs magic. but, i'm a monk, so i don't care, WHERE'S MY WU STICKS? stupid captain

Like Istavan said, the SBS is better. 10 ac 10 MR. unless this shield has a really, really cool graphic (and I ain't gonna waste the time to find out) it's worthless. Thought that Verant was trying to make rewards correlate better with the difficulty of the quest. I see they're doing a great job of it.
Resist Item
# Jul 10 2000 at 4:28 PM Rating: Decent
I agree that for an item you would like to use all the time this would not be the item of choice. However the value of this item is its magic resis and combined with other magic resis items would make it very valuable for fighting certain named biggies like the dragons or even the named ones of the planes.

It would be 10x easier to get a Shiny Brass Shield, which has 10 sv magic =)

Even Mistmoore shields are a lot easier to get and have many more resistances. They also look a lot cooler as well =)

This has to be the worse quest of all time. You camp a ****** mob and kill it twice, then kill another. an SBS is worth like 20pp maybe, and gives off light, so if you don't want to kill the trainer 10x to get it, just buy one. Or get an MM shield, which is 10ac, 6dex, 10 magic, disease, and poison resist, and worth about 400pp.

One day I run into the pirate cartographer in Firiona Vie, she decides to poke me since i'm medding and so I kill her. Found out she dropped part of the Guard of Ik quest so I then bug the elf armorer for details. I head to Trak's Teeth, since the guy says it comes from a jungle, thinking the specs there drop it so...I camp them for about a week. Couldnt find the shields till I bugged a City of Mist veteran. Tells me he found some funky no drop shields off a named somewhere close to the zone. Took me and a high lvl meat shield to do the area. I get the shields...I then turn in the shields and the pirate drop and get a ****** shield that stank to high heavens. What. the. hell! If you consider that the pirate cartographer is about lvl 20 - 30 and the captain of the guard was blue to me at lvl 48 with assorted mobs around him I get a reward thats worse than the shiny brass shield from Crushbone which a lvl 10-15 pc can camp! Unless this shield is part of another quest I see no use for it cept a crappy decoration.
