This group mission is the fourth in a series of five. It begins with Researcher Higgins (click for map image), a gnome found in Barren Coast at /location 230, -90 (sitting inside a wagon). He will not talk to you at dubious faction. He will give the task at indifferent+.

    Pre-requisites for Requesting:
    - Completion of "The Wild Island"
    - Completion of "Long Abandoned"
    - Completion of "A Volatile Disease"

At the end of the previous task, you saw:

Researcher Higgins is quite pleased with the samples of blood that you have brought him, as they will allow him to further his research, but at the current time he seems more interested in the journals you brought him, saying that make mention of various plants. He would like you to [investigate] these plants and bring back several samples for him to study.

    You say, 'We'll investigate more'

You have been assigned the task 'An Experiment Gone Wrong'.

Researcher Higgins has been studying the artifacts you brought him, but he is most amazed by the journal you uncovered. From the sketches inside, it seems that the Combine has been experimenting on the animals but unleashed the disease upon themselves.

Purchase tickets to Monkey Rock and catch the boat 0/1 (Barren Coast)

Dockmaster Weatherby says 'You look like you've been at sea on a dangerous mission for a while? Perhaps you plan to head back out, in which case you're going to need to purchase another ticket before boarding the Isabeau.'

Buy a "Seafarer's Ticket: Monkey Rock" from any of the Dockmasters along the coastline and keep it in your inventory. When the ship docks, step onto it and wait for it to sail out to the Buried Sea. Upon zoning, you'll find yourself in an instanced version of the island. (Next to you is a rowboat that serves as your zone-out.)

Harvest Fern Samples 0/35 (Monkey Rock)

The plants are found all over the island. They are the large plants with three purple bits sticking out of them. They share the same graphic as those that are unclickable, so you'll have to do some searching here. They are mostly in areas off the ground (up on hills, in the ruins and prominent landmarks of the zone, including around the monkey rock itself, and around the undead observatory).

You cannot collect a plant while invisible, or if there are hostile creatures around, so you'll have to clear the place of mobs. You'll know more creatures need to be killed when you get the message:

You cannot harvest with so many hostile creatures still on the island!"

    Upon collecting one, you see:

You have obtained several exquisite green leaves from the fern and place them in your satchel.

Report back to Researcher Higgins 0/1 (Barren Coast)

Near the zone-in area is a rowboat that you can click to port you back to the Buried Sea:

You get into the longboat and row out. You are quickly picked up by one of the many merchant ships sailing the waters of the Buried Sea and delivered safely to the dock on Jardel's Hook...

Head back to Researcher Higgins in Barren Coast, and hail him:

Researcher Higgins takes the fern samples and immediately begins working with them, mixing them in with several vials of liquid he had sitting nearby. Within a few moments, he has several bottles of liquid ready for use, turning to you and requesting that you take the [vials] and this [special potion] that he crafted and [investigate] the possibility that he has just concocted a cure.

This one is not so straight forward.

Buy a ticket to Monkey rock and hop on a boat to zone in.

Once there, you will see all sorts of fern-like plants all over. However, the ones you are looking for are the ones with the red/purple flowers.

Many of these are static zone decor... but at least 35 of them are "collectible."

They are not targetable, but clicking "at" them will allow you to either "collect" it, or not.

Also, you will NOT be allowed to collect collectable plants (you get an emote) if there are any hostile creatures in range -- and its a pretty good range. More like an area.

I had the best luck clearing off the top of the hils around the edge of the island and then collecting the plants there. Every plant I got was either on the hills or around the gorilla rock.

Once you have the updates, zone out (canoe) and head back to Higgins to finish.

Just in case anyone else is ****** like me, you have to left click on the ferns to collect them. I ran all over the damn island trying to right click the ferns, as if I was looting them, and couldn't find a damn one. I thought the quest was broken.

There is one really annoying thing about the plants. Some of them are pickable and some aren't. The island normally has these particular plants, not just on this mission. The annoying thing is that the developers didn't remove the normal plots of these plants. So for every one there is for you to click on there are 3 that look exactly the same but you can't click on. This leads to alot of frustration, running around clicking things, but here's a tip. The flower that you can click on for updates are physical objects, ie when you run into them they will stop you. The flowers that won't give you updates are like grass in that you can just run through them. This is a quick way to tell if a flower is lootable rather than clicking on it ten times.
    Which Plants

Most of the plants could be found on the hills. The plants at the beach and in the plane do not count.
    The Plants You Harvest
    # Apr 25 2007 at 6:37 AM Rating: Decent
The plants seems to randomly spawn around the island, and you cannot loot if any creature is on the that portion of the island. By portion, I mean one of the five areas sticking out, or the center field. You'll know more creatures need to be killed when you get the message "You cannot harvest with so many hostile creatures still on the island!" Coincidently, you also cannot harvest while invisible, you'll get the message, "You cannot use this item while invisible."

Once you start mass killing you can start harvesting from the plants. Green with large leaves and purple stem flowers. There's plenty of them scattered across the island, more then you need to finish the task.
