Find James the Watchmaker in the Plane of Knowledge next to the Halas stone.

He offers a task for each one of the hotzones introduced in the April 18, 2007 patch (listed here for reference).

You say, 'Hail, James the Watchmaker'

James the Watchmaker says, 'Hello there _____! Do you happen to have the [time]?'

You say, 'The time?'

James the Watchmaker says, 'Yes, the time of day. You see I usually keep a number of watches with me at all times so I always know what time it is but I recently [lost], well, all of them.'

You say, 'How were they lost?'

James the Watchmaker says, 'I lost them when I was travelling last week. I wanted to visit some of the places in Norrath that were special to me but I seemed to run into trouble everywhere I visited! And wouldn't you know it but everytime I stopped for a bit I managed to lose one of my [watches]!'

You say, 'Watches?'

James the Watchmaker says, 'That's what I said, watches! Are you hard of hearing? I don't suppose you would like to [look] for my watches? I hate not knowing what time it is! I'm sure I could find something in my backpack to interest you if you found one of my watches!'

You say, 'I will look for them'

This brings up a quest selector with several quests: One for each hotzone ranging from 20 to 65. Each has a very original name of: "Help me repair my watch! (Level X)", where X is between 20 and 65, in multiples of 5.

The task for 40th level:

Deliver 1 Large Gear #1 to James the Watchmaker. 0/1 Plane of Knowledge

Deliver 1 Large Reinforced Rod to James the Watchmaker. 0/1 Plane of Knowledge

Deliver 1 Large Gear #2 to James the Watchmaker. 0/1 Plane of Knowledge

Deliver 1 Large Gear #3 to James the Watchmaker. 0/1 Plane of Knowledge

These gears are dropped randomly in the Scarlet Desert. They may be looted prior to retrieving the task.

Turn them in and choose from different back-slot items.

Is there a faction standing I need to obtain to do this quest? I hail James the Watchmaker but get no response.

Help Me Repair My Watch - Level 40
# Sep 10 2008 at 4:10 PM Rating: Decent
As of today, September 10, 2008, this quest still works. I started hunting at the zoneline to Twilight Sea and got Large Gear #2 and Large Gear #3 pretty easily off drops there.

When I dinged 40, I moved to the base of the mesa at approximately 326, -420. Large Gear #1 dropped from a Scarlett Cheetah and the Large Reinforce Rod dropped from a Sun Revenant nearby. The rod seems to be the rarest of the parts.

There are rocks at the base of the mesa that allow you to get a better view of the surrounding areas. I usually pulled with an bow shot.

Everything runs at 20%, so root or snare is good if you have it. I soloed this as a 39-40 SK. I had Temperance cast on me before I left PoK and stocked up on alacrity, clarity and healing potions.

Cheetahs, sunflowers, lightcrawlers and just about everything will agro you. I left the aliens alone as I was indifferent to them and didn't want anything else joining in the trains.

I also made ample use of feign death when I got adds, which happened a lot more frequently than I cared for.

Sometimes I used the pet, sometimes not depending on how tired I was of recasting the darned thing after it had been killed.

This took about 2 hours of playing and I thought the xp was decent; however, power-players, please keep in mind, I tend not to notice how fast my xp bar goes up per kill.

How about un-hotzoned?

Anyone know of this quest can still be done even while these zones are no longer the current hotzones?

Got today the missing pieces :
* a large gear # 1
* a large gear # 2

they dropped several times, as well as the previous I already had, off of sun reavers, sun revenants and various nameds (the ones that drop luclin armor quest pieces) including repulsive lightcrawler, etched sun revenant, sun revenant desecrator.
I focused on sun revenants mostly for faction reasons but it's pretty safe to assume those drops are totally random.

I was able to get 2 of the drops today :
* A large reinforced rod
* A large gear #3

both off of sun revenants, I'd say uncommon (got 2 rods and 2 gear #3 in about 3 hours game session).

I have been hunting in Iceclad Ocean since it turned into a hot zone. The Gears are labeled 'Gear #1, Gear #2, etc...' I have not seen the 'Reinforced Rod' drop yet. All of the Gears have dropped from Ice Giants near the Dragon Bridge to Eastern Waste. Will keep hunting for more information.

Those 'Regular' drops in Iceclad are for the level 35 quest.
