This solo task is available from Arcanist Thalian (located at -121, -91) after completing the previous task, "Renegade Servants":

Arcanist Thalian says 'Why thank you. I trust that the elementals weren't too much trouble for you? Perhaps you've time to complete another [project] I could use your skills for?'

    You say, 'Another project?'

Arcanist Thalian says 'Since it seems you're quite adept at handling the other elementals, I wonder if you could collect a few samples of those drowned elementals that started popping up ever since city sank. The energy that surrounds them is completely foreign to me and I wonder if I might be able to learn some new secret from them if I had a few samples to study. It might even make a new entry in the almanac!'

You have been assigned the task 'Storms of Magic'.

Arcanist Thalian has heard reports of a new type of elemental seen wandering the outer areas of the city. He wishes to study the nature of these creatures and asks that you bring him samples of the substances that make up these drowned constructs. Return these samples to Thalian once you have collected them.

Collect 10 sparkling coral dust(s) 0/10 (Katta Castrum)

Deliver 10 sparkling coral dust(s) 0/10 (Katta Castrum)

The dust drops off dervish-type mobs in the outskirts of Katta Castrum. Note: These items are NOT pre-lootable.

Take Teleport pad to Outer Ena Azau. Building to the south is full of mobs that drop this item.

I had prelooted 2 of these while killing the mobs for the first task and when I requested the 2nd task, it updated twice and the quest journal updated to show me at 2/10 collected.

Since this quest is changed, you must loot the item after getting the quest, no more pre-loot allowed.

To compare this quest with the previous quest same npc offers (Renegade Servants), the major difference is one more reward option for dusty pottery chip.
If you are after pure exp for level or AA, Renegade Servants quest gives more, and will take less time to complete since sparkling coral dust don't always drop.

Well, you can still do this quest with The Serpent Slayer quest at same time since shissars camp is close by.

I just got the quest today, and it requires looting to be updated. They must have changed it since the last post here. The instructions in the write-up are correct, however. First you collect, then you deliver. No more pre-looting :(

This is so easy to do and can be pre-looted. At lvl 78 and AA set to 100% I got 5 AA with the turn in of a total of 100 Sparkling Coral Dust. Add this to the plat reward and the exp from the kills and the plat from loot and the faction, this is an AWESOME yet very easy task to complete!

Go kill in Katta and collect the dust which stack in 20.
Arcanist Thalian is the buiding where you zone in and behind you to the left.
Just say to Arcanist Thalian "next project" and task is updated.
Hand him 10 Sparkling Coral Dust, (not stacked) and the task is completed.
Collect your choice of 3 rewards.

    /dances the Shaman Shuffle

Now how do I rate this quest?

    EDIT:
OK, My post here is wrong, per the fine discussion below.
When you do the quest there is just one reward, and you get faction and XP at the same time ( WOOT! ). I was wrongly thinking you checked/clicked XP or faction for your reward. A mistake I've made before for sure.

    -- Morro
    END of EDIT

Remember the reward is FACTION or XP so you won't get all that XP if you choose the faction.
But even if you chose faction, you get XP as well and while it depends on the toon and how many times you've done it, it's rough;y about one AA from my experience and you get faction.
The cool thing about this quest is, as you say, the fact that the drops stack and you can pre-collect them so you can keep collecting drops and never worry about running back to the quest giver till you're full.

Sorry but this is wrong. You get both experience AND faction with every option for this task.

True, but I'm pretty sure you get more of one then the other if you shose that one.

I would like to believe if I chose faction as the reward I'd get more faction then if I chose XP.

but no way to really tell.

It's still one of favorite tasks. My 66 Pally and 76 Shaman are there now. My Pally needs the faction.

I don't think you're understanding the reward screen. Others have been confused by this as well. When you select any option on the left you get ALL the rewards listed on the right, you don't choose between them. Though it's true you can highlight different elements on the right it makes no difference for your reward. Every option for this task gives the same xp and faction. The only thing that varies among the options are whether you select a quest piece or plat. People have often been mislead to believe that what they highlight on the right is what they get for a reward but that's not the case.

I used to think I was picking between faction and xp also, but then read up on the sony site. To confirm I turned in 20 coral dusts yesterday, 10 with xp highlighted and 10 with faction highlighted. In both cases I got 10.5% AA for the reward so go get that faction up!

I noticed that AllaK has this quest marked as incomplete. It works ok as designed. Please update the listing. I'll also send an email to the staff requesting an update here.
    ///////////////////////////////////////////////
Yes, you are quite right and the AllaK staff informed me of the same. Here is the completed text.

Arcanist Thalian says, "Why thank you. I trust that the elementals weren't too much trouble for you? Perhaps you've time to complete another [project] I could use your skills for?"

    Answer [project]

Arcanist Thalian says 'Since it seems you're quite adept at handling the other elementals, I wonder if you could collect a few samples of those drowned elementals that started popping up ever since city sank. The energy that surrounds them is completely foreign to me and I wonder if I might be able to learn some new secret from them if I had a few samples to study. It might even make a new entry in the almanac!'

You then receive the quest. Info sent to AllaK.

I started camping Tempest Eddy NW of the greenhouse.

These drop off the trash mobs and its a nice little side quest if you happen to be killing there. As stated below, just collect em without getting the quest and once you have them see the quest giver.

Say "next Project" and the 10 count will automatically take place and then you have to turn in 10.

at Level 83 I got about 20 percent AAxp. Not a lot but the trash mobs don't give me much XP while I'm camping Tempest Eddy

For those you who need merchant faction and are doing the Herb retrieval quest, this quest may be easier. The rare drop herbs are frustrating and here all you need are 10 drops. But I have to admit the shissar are easier to kite.

    Upon completion of "Renegade Servants"

[Thu May 24 13:32:59 2007] Arcanist Thalian says, "Why thank you. I trust that the elementals weren't too much trouble for you? Perhaps you've time to complete another [project] I could use your skills for?"

[Thu May 24 13:33:55 2007] You say, 'Hail, Arcanist Thalian'
[Thu May 24 13:33:56 2007] Arcanist Thalian scrambles around frantically looking through the pages strewn across the table. 'Well don't just stand there looking foolish, <Name>. Help me look! I'm missing page 634 of the Chronologist's Almanac! You can't have an Almanac without page 634 now can you! I have to find it and finish binding it before I can turn my attention to those renegade constructs and [elementals] out in the city!'
[Thu May 24 13:34:15 2007] You say, 'next project'
[Thu May 24 13:34:15 2007] You have been assigned the task 'Storms of Magic'.

    =============================================================================
    TASK DESCRIPTION:
Arcanist Thalian has heard reports of a new type of elemental seen wandering the outer areas of the city. He wishes to study the nature of these creatures and asks that you bring him samples of the substances that make up these drowned constructs. Return these samples to Thalian once you have collected them.

    =============================================================================

We found the best place to camp the related creatures was in Katta right beside the zone in portal to Atiiki. (-4064, 2728)

The drop rate seems common in this area, every kill to every other kill. Maybe we just got lucky!

We had the Sparkling Coral Dust drop from:

    a wayward whirlpool eddy

    a construct of the drowned

an amalgam of the drowned ~ *Note these SILENCE, which makes healing/slowing difficult at times when the mob comes as an add, you can avoid being silenced the majority of the time by staying at max spell range.*

There is also a reward... another piece of pottery. 'dusty pottery chip' if I remember correctly.

Drop rate was not very good for us after the first 4 mobs all dropped the Coral Dust. Four toons, 10 drops each...took about 4 hours.
