This group mission is the first in a series of five. It begins with Gus Longear (click for map image), who is located at about 390, 3240 on the northeastern coast of Jardel's Hook in the Buried Sea.

    Pre-requisites for requesting:
    - None

    You say, 'Hail, Gus Longear'

Gus Longear says 'Ahoy there friend. Beautiful day to be on the seas, smellin' the salt and breeze. Ah, days like this were made for a sleek vessel cuttin' through them waters. Here I am stuck on shore lookin' into a [few things] for Jardel.'

    You say, 'Few things?'

Gus Longear says 'Yep yep. It seems some of our ships be turnin' up missin' lately. Things aren't lookin' so good so I needs to get to the [bottom] of it.'

    You say, 'Bottom?'

Gus Longear says 'Well, Jardel's gotten it into his head that [Deadbone Reef] has got somethin' to do wit' it all. I'm startin' to think he may be right. That place gives me the willies, and the waters there sure have some nasty surprises if'n you don't watch it.'

    You say, 'Deadbone Reef?'

Gus Longear says 'Deadbone Reef's a mighty dangerous place, but I could really use a right straight-up set of folks to go have a look-see and [report] back for me.'

    You say, 'I'll report back'

Gus Longear says 'If you be up for the job, get to it!'

You have been assigned the task 'Shipping Lanes'.

Explore the island of Deadbone Reef. While there, engage and assess the threat of some of the beings about the island.

Purchase tickets to Deadbone Reef and catch the boat 0/1 (The Buried Sea)

Buy a "Seafarer's Ticket: Deadbone Reef" from Dockmaster Angus at the dock (nearby) and keep it in your inventory. When the ship docks, step onto it and wait for it to sail out to the Buried Sea. Upon zoning, you'll find yourself in an instanced version of the island. (Next to you is a rowboat that serves as your zone-out.)

Dockmaster Angus says 'You look like you've been at sea on a dangerous mission for a while? Perhaps you plan to head back out, in which case you're going to need to purchase another ticket before boarding the Isabeau.'

Go to the beach near your landing point 0/1 (Deadbone Reef)

Explore the beach farthest from your landing point 0/1 (Deadbone Reef)

Go to the north west part of the highlands 0/1 (Deadbone Reef)

Explore around the sunken ships 0/1 (Deadbone Reef)

This step will update around 3507,-3617,175

Find the central cave 0/1 (Deadbone Reef)

The first three location updates are straightforward, on land. For the "sunken ships", this updates in the central area of the waters. The "central cave" is a bit trickier - this is one of the underwater caves - the one on the south bend of the island at about /loc 2900, -4000.

Kill 8 thulii to see if they have gotten more aggressive 0/8 (Deadbone Reef)

Kill 8 gali balalaa to see if they have gotten more aggressive 0/8 (Deadbone Reef)

Kill 8 galigaba to see if they are the cause 0/8 (Deadbone Reef)

Kill 8 deadbone sharks, see if they are strong enough to capsize ships 0/8 (Deadbone Reef)

Kill 8 of the drowned dead to see if their numbers have increased 0/8 (Deadbone Reef)

Mobs in this zone tend to hit for a max ~1,250. All are stunnable and mezzable. None appear to summon. Be warned that underwater fighting can result in some warping, so if you can't handle adds, make sure to keep a bit of a distance between your fight area and other mobs.

Return to the longboat you arrived in 0/1 (Deadbone Reef)

Near the zone-in point is a rowboat. You don't have to use it; just have to walk near it.

Report your findings to Gus Longear 0/1 (The Buried Sea)

    You say, 'Hail, Gus Longear'

Gus Longear says 'Arrr. That information be useful. Would ye like to look into this a tad more?'

You have collected information on the inhabitants of Deadbone Reef.

Even after doing the undead first, still got adds when doing the sharks. I hate underwater fighting.

I did this mission with a merc healer, lvl 77 Ranger, and lvl 74 enchanter. Received 150 doubloons for the mission. Took my time and had 3 hours left on it before I completed it.

theres another cave on south bend of the inner curve of the island just out in the water, loc 2913, -3971. This is the cave you need to trigger the task step.

I also had trouble getting the central cave update. Cleared the whole area around the entrance to the cave as well inside the cave, giving me time to wander at my leisure. Nuttin'. Did this twice, the entire mission except for the cave. Seems to me it's bugged at present.

I was trying to get to the sunken ships and having to slowly clear my way out to avoid the drowned sailor trains and got this flag updated without intending to. If you are on the beach and facing out towards the ship that is cut in half with that half sticking out of the water. I was clearing around the right side and got the update going back and forth to the right side of the ship. When I saw the flag I looked down in the water and saw that I was on the right side of the cave (facing towards the ship). I had to move forward and down to left and then saw the entrance to cave. Hope that helps as I do not have the exact location.

From the beach head towards the half-ship sticking out of the water and approach the ship to the right side of the cave.

Doing mission with four lvl 75s (Warrior, Shammy, Cleric, Druid).

Found easiest to just clear near beach, then pull skellies up on land from around that beach, then jump in and kill sharks, then go up the hill for the humanoids. Since there is no respawn, this works for us.

I have the following 2 suggestions to make this mission easier:

1> Don't save sharks to last because they're PitA water fight... you're bound to get some undead when pulling sharks.

2> If you don't listen to '1' and save sharks for the end, the best way to pull them is 'SoE' and invis versus undead, then run on water near shark & stick a toe in... Don't let 'em hit you though or the IvU will break and you'll get several undead adds.

Sub-note on sharks... sometimes they start warping out of water... at that point, they're difficult to hit... rangers and pets can do so just fine... rangers with bows from out of the water... quick cast spells seem to land too. The MT can usually get some swings off, but others pretty much have no luck from in the water so you might as well get out when this happens and protect yourself from the adds.

BTW, the cleric has no problem healing the main tank from shore, so save your cleric the trouble of swimming with you.

When you zone in, take over the beach, kill 8 humans, skellies, sharks, snakes, and lizards, when you complete this run around to the 2 other spots on the beach and the other checkpoint spot by the broken boat, then zoneout. Mobs don't summon, and are able to be snared, and rooted. Most npc's are dark blue (70+) but range to yellow con, and give 4-5% per kill aa.

Where is the cave you have to find to update the task?

We swam down a tunnel at the rock that sticks up out of the water and explored the three caves down there, but couldn't get task updated.
