Morin Shadowbane, the ranger guildmaster of the forest, sends you on a Quest for the new Ranger only weapon, the Short Sword of Morin. There are two ways to get the sword. (1) If you trade in an Ebony Bladed Sword to Morin, you will get a Short Sword of Morin , a Ranger only weapon; or (2) Morin will also tell you that he will give you his personal sword if you find and kill the Ghoul Messenger, who is located "between Kithicor and the Karanas" and bring back his note, or whatever he drops. The messenger spawns somewhere in Western Karana, is tough to anyone not in his 30's, and is always running. He drops a map of Kithicor. Take that map back and you will also receive the sword. You get the same sword for doing this as for trading the Ebony Bladed Sword. He then might tell you about the Quest for the Orc Impaler, which I have listed under Lesser Faydark quests.

Some of the dialogue:

You say, 'Hail, Morin Shadowbane'

Morin Shadowbane says, 'Hail, Elina! I am the leader of this beleaguered troop of rangers. Even though the once fair Kithicor slowly succumbs to the [darkness] at hand, we shall not abandon the woods without a fight.'

You say, 'darkness'

Morin Shadowbane says, 'The denizens of these woods are slowly being overrun by dark fiends and shadowed men. As valiantly as we have fought, our numbers dwindle. We know very little about our aggressors, but if we [acquire some information] or perhaps [fine weapons], then we may yet have a chance to retake the woods once more.'

You say, 'acquire some information'

Morin Shadowbane says, 'Your tracking skills are invaluable to our cause, brave Elina. Our scouts have reported sightings of a ghoul messenger. They have spotted him traveling between Kithicor and an undead camp in the Plains of Karana. They have attempted to track the monster and obtain any strategic documentation he may be carrying. Perhaps you can succeed where others have failed. Perhaps you may even earn my personal short sword.'

You say, 'fine weapons'

Morin Shadowbane says, 'My soldiers are valiant, but poorly equipped. I have heard of a magical weapon of great power, some call it the ebony blade. Amongst the frogloks there can be found a minotaur who wields this sword of might. If you are a ranger and could provide me with this sword, I would gladly exchange it with my own meager weapon. If you prefer, you may attempt to [acquire some information] for us instead.'

After turnin of the strategic map of kithicor off the Ghoul Messenger:

Morin Shadowbane says, 'Excellent work, Elina! It is obvious that you are a highly skilled tracker and warrior. Accept this reward, my personal sword which has served me well in countless battles. Perhaps you are willing to perform [another service] on our behalf?'
You gain experience!

You say, 'another service'

Morin Shadowbane says, 'Very well then. Your help will bring us closer to solving the mystery of Kithicor! Find Bryn Fynndel in the Lesser Faydark and tell him Morin sent you. His band of elven warriors are observing the activities of the Crushbone orcs and Mistmoore dark elves. Perhaps you can help them shed some light on our plight.'

No faction hits.

Need all dialogues, /loc of quest mobs.

Killed Ghoul Messenger easily using just snare and stinging swarm at 25 - untwinked on The Combine server, btw.

To say that he is tough to anyone not in their 30's is sort of misleading. I took him on at level 30 and he went down easy taking only about 23% damage off of me in the process. I already have a better weapon than Morins sword, but was passing through the Karanas on way to Rivervale anyway and saw messenger on track and figured what the hell. Might as well do it just so I can say that I did.

im 34. have the axe of the stained scions or whatever and the axe of the velium brood... im nicely geared. He took about 22% of my health. not sure what my MR is but his root stuck like 3 times. seemed to have a low duration. Since getting the scion axe and it adding MONSTER amounts of attack. I seldom miss.... well, with this guy I did, a lot. so its not his hitpoints persey or him hitting me, it was concerning how many misses I got on this guy. Oh and he halls butt too. Even with a self sow I had to cast to grab him. (out of arrows). I am willing to guess he has some serious AC / Agility.

Weapon No, XP Yes?
# May 05 2003 at 11:17 AM Rating: Default
From what I have read here, the general concesus is that this is not the greatest of weapons given the level you need to be to take this guy out. It seems obvious to me that since you can obtain all kinds of good equipment at the Bazaar, some quests (this being a good example) are not worth the reward you gain. However what does not seem to have been addressed is the XP you get for completing this.

I have done quests simple quests multiple times just because the XP is so good (IE Baby Joseph Sayer, kill Lord Elgnub in BB). So since the GM is tough to find and run down, and the reward is Ok but not not stellar, is it worth it just to get the XP from Morin and destroy the sword? (assuming you already have something better)

this quest existed long before the bazaar. i know thats hard for some people to imagine... it also existed before the noob armor/weapon quests.

If this is a Ranger ONLY weopon, why is ALL classes the Best Class for this quest?...
RE: Best Class?
# Feb 27 2003 at 1:01 PM Rating: Decent
Although its Ranger Only, most rangers wouldnt want to wield this sword. So basically this quest is just for doing a quest, which means, Best Class for this quest is simply anyone wanting to do a quest.

im a lvl 30 ranger somewhat twinked, with a centi-shortsword, when i saw him on track, i had read about him and he was blue to me so i decided to try him. i killed him with about 3 bubs of health left, just meleeing him since i was LoM, and he's about the same as fighting gnolls at paw in SK.

What do you have to do if you don't want to take the GM path, where do you get the Ebony from?
RE: Ebony sword
# Aug 31 2002 at 10:57 PM Rating: Decent
It is better to just go ahead and take the ghoul messenger he barely owned me at 27. So i came back at 29 the best strategy i came up with was constantly casting tangling weeds on him to reduce the damage he was dealing it actually makes him miss a lot and use what ever low delay weapons you have so you can inflict as much damage as you can while he misses. I wouldn't even bother trying to nuke if you keep him slowed you can save they mana for healing up after the fight. Only if you solo but i recommend bringing another melee along if you are below 29 and if you can get someone to cast endure magic on you he casts root a lot but will run out of mana pretty quick.

wow, i ran across this guy, he killed me because i was unexpecting , alone, untwinked, un-buffed, and all i had was a two handed weapon and a chainmail tunic because i was on my way to kitchor forest to loot my corpse ( why didnt someone tell me about the day night transformation and there ability to see through camo?) this was near a lil two building post thing, so i tryed to run for because i surely didnt feel like dieing again after my guild helped me out with this stuff, and i'm proud to say i died anyway, even when i tried the "turn off your comp" escape, saddly i lost everything, again, so i deleted that 28 rang (kluil on the Bertxxoulus, er whatever) and started a new one, because my dreams were somewhat dashed, yet, when i reach 30 such, me and a pal ad takin him down, as a small vengance for destroying my prized main and first char.

I just completed this quest last night with the help of a guild-mate. I'm a 27 (untwinked) ranger, he is a 26 (untwinked) druid. Believe me, the ghoul messenger is tough. And one of the hardest parts is just catching up with him. At this level, my track skill is at the master level, so tracking him wasn't too hard. In fact, almost as soon as we zoned in to WK, he came up on track. But trying to catch him was really difficult, even with a SoW buff from my druid buddy. Without SoW, this quest would not have been possible. The GM runs all over WK at blinding speed. Every time you think you may catch up to him, he takes a quick Barry Sanders-like turn and is suddenly behind you. When you do catch up with him however, be prepared for a serious fight. The GM hits very very hard. Fortunately, I was equipped with the Polished Granite Tomahawk (invulnerabilty for short durations) which obsorbed some of his most punishing blows. Even still, the GM took me down to one bub of health before he started to flee (good thing we started off the fight by snaring him, I would have hated to chase this guy all over WK since he has Michael Johnson type World-class sprinters speed). It was a close fight, very close (he conned white to me). At levels below the 30s, you definitely need a partner to take the GM out (unless of course, you are twinked - but if you are you probably don't need to do this quest). The Shortsword of Morin is great for me as I am untwinked. It's a really fast weapon that I plan to dual wield with the PGT...until I can get something better of course.
What is the Point?
# Jan 17 2002 at 10:10 AM Rating: Default
This is a very poor weapon for the effort to obtain it. By the time you get to the level necessary to take down the Ghoul Messanger you will already have better weapons. Heck, Crystal Fibers sell for 40pp and are much better than this sword. It is too bad that "equipment inflation" has reduced the value of this quest to the pointless stage.
RE: What is the Point?
# Feb 19 2002 at 4:21 PM Rating: Excellent
Well, it's been a very long time since I did this quest. But over a year ago, the Short Sword of Morin was a huge deal. As a level 28 ranger, I vowed to kill the Ghoul Messenger and get this sword. My guild offered to help, but I thought of it as a personal accomplishment, something I had to do alone for a change.

Back then, there were a lot less twinks. I was still wearing mostly banded armor. I remember spending every copper to raise my fletching skill, just so I could make silver-tipped arrows to fight the GM with. Then I bought SoW potions. I died the first attempt, but finally killed the GM and got the sword. One of my proudest moments on EverQuest.

I guess my point is that stats aren't everything. Pride and personal accomplishment are other reasons to do these quests. And remember that this world started out with no twinks, and you had to painfully acquire every item. I'm sure there are some truly new players on EQ, with no 50's friends to help them. To those new rangers, good luck. You'll be proud to earn this sword.

I have to agree, without out a friend to help you out it's very hard to obtain many of the items in the game. It's quite an accomplishment to earn many things all by yourself, even if you're saving money to buy them. It's rewarding to finally destroy a mob and come out with a nice item, or complete a lengthy quest. I've worked very hard to get to 51 as a necromancer, most of the time by myself, and some of the items out there are rare. There have been many times that I've seen characters much lower in level than myself decked out in some pretty sweet gear. Much better than what I've got on. But I've had a very good time getting what I do have, and that's what makes the game fun to play )

Broken heart
# Dec 28 2001 at 9:55 AM Rating: Default
After having to kill this messanger who is not easy (I was lvl 30). I ran strait away and trade in the map not even taking time to heal. So excite about getting my first epic style weapon. I was so broken hearted at first when i seen that 6 damage. The sword is nice but at 30th lvl I realy need a better weapon then that. So off to stoneburnt mountains I went (i know that swords only 6 damage too but it procs). I have it in the bank and sence its no drop i will have it for some time.

Question: Is there any more use for this sword later?

The messanger sponds as stated above around the nk side of wk. I have also found him close to the farm house closest to the undead place.

By the way just fyi, my ranger was not twinked anymore then what i could aford to buy for him (sense this is my main), but my 25th lvl druid was when I started it up :).

No, the sword is lore, which means you can only have one in your inventory (bank included) at any given time.

Well this guy is always up at night anyway. all you have to do is go to the small merchant area just West of the Ogre camp where the two buildings are (not the single building with the fletching merchant)the two closer to the NK zone. I have seen him spawn right there between the two buildings and then he heads in some random direction. He runs like the devil so you need a SOW and he cons yellow at 25. I ahve killed him three times. The first time I was grouped with a 20 lvl druid and I was 23 he conned red but I had heard he was in his mid 20's so we gave it a whirl, sure enough it was a close fight but we got him. He turned on the druid once and got her down to about half health before I could taunt him off her but when I did it was all over. With the last whack I saw the druids health bar turn purple and there was that Frilling Werewolf who came by to help his old buddy the GM out. I was rooted by the now dead ghoul and just as I was going to right click, bam I was dead too. By the time I made the corpse run the GM was already rotted away.

The next time I was lvl 24 and heading to Qeynos and down by the river my group and I thought we would look for him, a small trip north and sure enought there he was on track. Ran him down with the now 22 Druid, a 25 pally and as I said me at 24 and he was toast. Didnt even loose half a bulb.... No werewolf this time.

The next time I was at 25 and I just went and waited to see if he spawned in that small village area and sure enough he did right after sunset. I followed him a while and he despawned in the bandit hills. went back tot he village and he spawned again in less than 15 minutes and took off south and west. Followed him and the Druid whow as with me the other two times had showed up so we took him for fun just to see if we could. Never had turned in the map... need to do that.

I read about this quest today right here on this forum so I descided to try it as I was in NK anyway. I went to the undead area in the south east of the zone and didn't see anything on track. I then descided to try killing all the undead as per a recent post. About 3 mins after I killed the undead at approximatly 5pm game time I saw him on track he had spawned right close to the undead camp so I followed him while looking for someone to help me. He zig zaged roughly NW and past the shops across from the bandits then straight through the ogre shrine where a 46 lvl mage was waiting and took him out. I have no idea how tough he is I had trouble keeping up with him untill the shrine where I saw him for the first and last time hehe happy hunting. lvl 19 ranger on 7th hammer
Killing of a GM (and should they mostly be?)
# Oct 17 2001 at 5:57 PM Rating: Decent
It does seem like a pretty easy sword to get, but then again, its not all that great of a sword. But good for low levels.

I killed the GM at level 24. I was camping in Highpass for a PGT (just because I've never had one, nor looked up its stats, so I was curious) when a higher level ranger noticed the GM on track somewhere toward the middle of WK, and called me. He kited it over to the zone to NK, and kept the ghoul rooted until I arrived. It wasn't a hard fight really. I was ghoulrooted only twice in the fight, which was annoying only one of the times in that I'd just taken a step back out of my own effective melee range and was stuck a while unable to reach the ghoul.. I didn't want to run so it wasn't much of a problem otherwise. The other ranger did give me a heal, when I was 1/3 down (and the ghoul was 2/3 down) but by that point it was clear I could have finished without it.

Anyway, for a mid-20's ranger with decent equipment its not too tough of a fight, esp with a partner or two. Most of the time the GM couldn't hit me. Occasionally he'd hit for 40-55 damage. Meanwhile, my multiple, much less damaging, attacks were taking him apart nicely, double and triples for 16-20 each from dual-wielded mudman enforcer and dragon horn yk.

Given the weapons I have, I don't really need Morin's sword itself. But I've been told its needed for other things. Besides, I killed an evil beast and removed it from the land :) making Wk safer for travellers. Only safe-er though, not safe. Oobnoptery (or whatever the necro's name is) was just a little way south of us, and that's a fight I don't want to go get into :P

It's good though to see this quest helping people out now. I remember a few years ago when they first put this quest in, and nobody could find the GM. People searched all over, and others started misdirecting rumors. People used to hang around all night in Kith looking for it. This was back before Kith became so dangerous at night... it was very amusing sometimes listening to the chatter of groups of rangers scattered throughout Kith trying to make a comprehensive ranger 'radar' net, and reporting to each other what they saw.. and telling stories since they were bored as heck.

Now I just wish I knew where/how to get that leaf the catman wants from EK...

just got it

At the lower levels, 25 and lower, this can be a tough quest, so take a group or someone at least lvl 30 with you. THe hardest part of his quest is to find the Ghoul Messenger in WK. When he comes up on track he is still tough to catch. For a sword that only takes some leg work, it is a great off hander for a young ranger.
