Morin Shadowbane, the ranger guildmaster of the forest, sends you on a Quest for the new Ranger only weapon, the Short Sword of Morin. There are two ways to get the sword. (1) If you trade in an Ebony Bladed Sword to Morin, you will get a Short Sword of Morin , a Ranger only weapon; or (2) Morin will also tell you that he will give you his personal sword if you find and kill the Ghoul Messenger, who is located "between Kithicor and the Karanas" and bring back his note, or whatever he drops. The messenger spawns somewhere in Western Karana, is tough to anyone not in his 30's, and is always running. He drops a map of Kithicor. Take that map back and you will also receive the sword. You get the same sword for doing this as for trading the Ebony Bladed Sword. He then might tell you about the Quest for the Orc Impaler, which I have listed under Lesser Faydark quests.

I have done quests simple quests multiple times just because the XP is so good (IE Baby Joseph Sayer, kill Lord Elgnub in BB). So since the GM is tough to find and run down, and the reward is Ok but not not stellar, is it worth it just to get the XP from Morin and destroy the sword? (assuming you already have something better)

Back then, there were a lot less twinks. I was still wearing mostly banded armor. I remember spending every copper to raise my fletching skill, just so I could make silver-tipped arrows to fight the GM with. Then I bought SoW potions. I died the first attempt, but finally killed the GM and got the sword. One of my proudest moments on EverQuest.
I guess my point is that stats aren't everything. Pride and personal accomplishment are other reasons to do these quests. And remember that this world started out with no twinks, and you had to painfully acquire every item. I'm sure there are some truly new players on EQ, with no 50's friends to help them. To those new rangers, good luck. You'll be proud to earn this sword.

Question: Is there any more use for this sword later?
The messanger sponds as stated above around the nk side of wk. I have also found him close to the farm house closest to the undead place.
By the way just fyi, my ranger was not twinked anymore then what i could aford to buy for him (sense this is my main), but my 25th lvl druid was when I started it up :).

The next time I was lvl 24 and heading to Qeynos and down by the river my group and I thought we would look for him, a small trip north and sure enought there he was on track. Ran him down with the now 22 Druid, a 25 pally and as I said me at 24 and he was toast. Didnt even loose half a bulb.... No werewolf this time.
The next time I was at 25 and I just went and waited to see if he spawned in that small village area and sure enough he did right after sunset. I followed him a while and he despawned in the bandit hills. went back tot he village and he spawned again in less than 15 minutes and took off south and west. Followed him and the Druid whow as with me the other two times had showed up so we took him for fun just to see if we could. Never had turned in the map... need to do that.

I killed the GM at level 24. I was camping in Highpass for a PGT (just because I've never had one, nor looked up its stats, so I was curious) when a higher level ranger noticed the GM on track somewhere toward the middle of WK, and called me. He kited it over to the zone to NK, and kept the ghoul rooted until I arrived. It wasn't a hard fight really. I was ghoulrooted only twice in the fight, which was annoying only one of the times in that I'd just taken a step back out of my own effective melee range and was stuck a while unable to reach the ghoul.. I didn't want to run so it wasn't much of a problem otherwise. The other ranger did give me a heal, when I was 1/3 down (and the ghoul was 2/3 down) but by that point it was clear I could have finished without it.
Anyway, for a mid-20's ranger with decent equipment its not too tough of a fight, esp with a partner or two. Most of the time the GM couldn't hit me. Occasionally he'd hit for 40-55 damage. Meanwhile, my multiple, much less damaging, attacks were taking him apart nicely, double and triples for 16-20 each from dual-wielded mudman enforcer and dragon horn yk.
Given the weapons I have, I don't really need Morin's sword itself. But I've been told its needed for other things. Besides, I killed an evil beast and removed it from the land :) making Wk safer for travellers. Only safe-er though, not safe. Oobnoptery (or whatever the necro's name is) was just a little way south of us, and that's a fight I don't want to go get into :P
It's good though to see this quest helping people out now. I remember a few years ago when they first put this quest in, and nobody could find the GM. People searched all over, and others started misdirecting rumors. People used to hang around all night in Kith looking for it. This was back before Kith became so dangerous at night... it was very amusing sometimes listening to the chatter of groups of rangers scattered throughout Kith trying to make a comprehensive ranger 'radar' net, and reporting to each other what they saw.. and telling stories since they were bored as heck.
Now I just wish I knew where/how to get that leaf the catman wants from EK...

go to oger camp and wait on hill u will be able to track this guy there
p.s.
he only spawns at night
Anyway, I got it at lvl 14 with help of my 45 druid guildmate. Where to find the Ghoul Messenger in WK? Well since this a ranger only, no drop weapon, I'm assuming you have track. I camped out near the undead camp, in the SouthEastern corner of WK. From there and turned on track. He came up on radar at around 10-11PM (I think, but definitely at night. We found him running along the trail. Killed him, got the note, and took it to Shadowbane for teh sword.
Great quest, nice and simple. Hope this finds you well.

Someone in a earlier post suggested by asking to loot the Ghoul Messenger.
After I read his/her post (a couple days back), I immediately logged on (looking for a replacement for my Velium Scimitar that won't proc for me).
I was camped in WK and I sent a shout during daytime, "if you kill the Ghoul Messenger, can a young ranger please loot the body."
Almost immediately, someone /tell me the loc of the corpse. Sure enough the loot was still on him.
So, at least I thought, the worst part of it was over. I forgot about KF at night. I found the NPC and did the exchange. I did not have enough time to equip the sword when I had 5 undead (all con red) on my ass. Needless to say, corpse run.
Through the death and being scared off my ass, the sword is well worth it. The day will come when I can dual wield this and possibly my Velium Scimitar.
I guess its the smartest that'll win, i fought him once before before i thought about kyting, he used goulroot and nearly killed me
I had to ask a druid for help. He just casted a Damage shield on me and a few heal and it was ok.
Nice weapon.

Picked him up on track almost right away zoning in from NK, I guess we were near those two merchant buildings, kinda NW of ruins, along the trail. Not sure what time it was. He seems to run from ruins up through the ogre camp.

at 11pm (Everquest time) the Ghoul Messanger spawns indeed close to the undead ruins near the zone to NK. If you start tracking around 10pm you won't miss it: make sure you have sow because the Ghoul does almost run at sow speed. The monster was blue to me (I am at Lev30) and it was a very tough battle - help would be suggested, I was lucky to have found a little help. I dotted it and then zapped it with all the remaining mana I had: it resisted almost everything. You must use magical weapons to defeat this monsters, so if you have magical arrows please you use em all. You can kill the Ghoul and give it to Morin in Kithicor without having spoken to him before. The sword is very nice, although I kind of still prefer my PGT, due to Berserker Strength... it still helps alot not being hit for those 4 / 5 seconds.
Have fun and good hunting.

Looks like a mid 20s ranger can do this with a single partner of similar level and appropriate class.

I went into Qeynos and had a look around, killed a few Gnolls in BB for fun and gave away the loot to the lowbie Rangers in the area, and decided to look for a port home.
I ran into the WK zone, clicked my radar, and tracked him straight away. I chased him for not long, snared and rooted, and then kited him and hit him with DD spells until oom. I melee'd and killed him with 42HP's left. I was a happy Ranger !!
This page and all the postings were a great help...thanks guys.

A friend and I were in Beholder killing evil eyes trying to get a couple polished bone bracelets. He went linkdead and was gone for quite a while. I decided to go to WK to camp the GM. I was full health but my mana was very low.
Soon as I hit WK I started tracking as I ran along the path. Just before I got to the bandits he popped onto the radar. I tracked him down and almost killed him but he got me. I was bound at the gypsies in NK so I ran right back.
I found my body and ran around a little hoping he was still hurting from what I had done to him earlier. A werewolf popped on track so I decided to kill the werewolf and go after the GM another day. I killed the werewolf easily and had a little over three bubbles of health left and about three bubbles of mana. I checked tracking and the GM was on track almost on top of me.
I ran him down and he was about 80% health. I was lucky enough to kill him with 35 hit points left. The ghoul messenger is the toughest blue con mob I've seen. The sword is SWEET!
