To say that he is tough to anyone not in their 30's is sort of misleading. I took him on at level 30 and he went down easy taking only about 23% damage off of me in the process. I already have a better weapon than Morins sword, but was passing through the Karanas on way to Rivervale anyway and saw messenger on track and figured what the hell. Might as well do it just so I can say that I did.

I am an untwinked 26 (after the fight 27) ranger who droped the messenger last night, by the time it was done I had 6 hit points left!!! Talk about sweating bullets. So just be warned this guy is tough.

What do you have to do if you don't want to take the GM path, where do you get the Ebony from?

wow, i ran across this guy, he killed me because i was unexpecting , alone, untwinked, un-buffed, and all i had was a two handed weapon and a chainmail tunic because i was on my way to kitchor forest to loot my corpse ( why didnt someone tell me about the day night transformation and there ability to see through camo?) this was near a lil two building post thing, so i tryed to run for because i surely didnt feel like dieing again after my guild helped me out with this stuff, and i'm proud to say i died anyway, even when i tried the "turn off your comp" escape, saddly i lost everything, again, so i deleted that 28 rang (kluil on the Bertxxoulus, er whatever) and started a new one, because my dreams were somewhat dashed, yet, when i reach 30 such, me and a pal ad takin him down, as a small vengance for destroying my prized main and first char.

I just completed this quest last night with the help of a guild-mate. I'm a 27 (untwinked) ranger, he is a 26 (untwinked) druid. Believe me, the ghoul messenger is tough. And one of the hardest parts is just catching up with him. At this level, my track skill is at the master level, so tracking him wasn't too hard. In fact, almost as soon as we zoned in to WK, he came up on track. But trying to catch him was really difficult, even with a SoW buff from my druid buddy. Without SoW, this quest would not have been possible. The GM runs all over WK at blinding speed. Every time you think you may catch up to him, he takes a quick Barry Sanders-like turn and is suddenly behind you. When you do catch up with him however, be prepared for a serious fight. The GM hits very very hard. Fortunately, I was equipped with the Polished Granite Tomahawk (invulnerabilty for short durations) which obsorbed some of his most punishing blows. Even still, the GM took me down to one bub of health before he started to flee (good thing we started off the fight by snaring him, I would have hated to chase this guy all over WK since he has Michael Johnson type World-class sprinters speed). It was a close fight, very close (he conned white to me). At levels below the 30s, you definitely need a partner to take the GM out (unless of course, you are twinked - but if you are you probably don't need to do this quest). The Shortsword of Morin is great for me as I am untwinked. It's a really fast weapon that I plan to dual wield with the PGT...until I can get something better of course.

Hiya, i am a lvl 31 ranger, around lvl 25 or so, i bought my self a lamentation and wurmslayer.. this is an excelent combo, hands down. get your hands on these and you wouldn't hafta get new weaps till your epic... anyhow a friend of mine who is not near so rich did get this and seems to be a fairly decent weapon. but he did get it by luck at a low lvl. anyhow, my point, good weapon, but after lvl 30 find something else

when i did this quest i could take down mammoths in like 14 shots

It does seem like a pretty easy sword to get, but then again, its not all that great of a sword. But good for low levels.

I killed the GM at level 24. I was camping in Highpass for a PGT (just because I've never had one, nor looked up its stats, so I was curious) when a higher level ranger noticed the GM on track somewhere toward the middle of WK, and called me. He kited it over to the zone to NK, and kept the ghoul rooted until I arrived. It wasn't a hard fight really. I was ghoulrooted only twice in the fight, which was annoying only one of the times in that I'd just taken a step back out of my own effective melee range and was stuck a while unable to reach the ghoul.. I didn't want to run so it wasn't much of a problem otherwise. The other ranger did give me a heal, when I was 1/3 down (and the ghoul was 2/3 down) but by that point it was clear I could have finished without it.

Anyway, for a mid-20's ranger with decent equipment its not too tough of a fight, esp with a partner or two. Most of the time the GM couldn't hit me. Occasionally he'd hit for 40-55 damage. Meanwhile, my multiple, much less damaging, attacks were taking him apart nicely, double and triples for 16-20 each from dual-wielded mudman enforcer and dragon horn yk.

Given the weapons I have, I don't really need Morin's sword itself. But I've been told its needed for other things. Besides, I killed an evil beast and removed it from the land :) making Wk safer for travellers. Only safe-er though, not safe. Oobnoptery (or whatever the necro's name is) was just a little way south of us, and that's a fight I don't want to go get into :P

It's good though to see this quest helping people out now. I remember a few years ago when they first put this quest in, and nobody could find the GM. People searched all over, and others started misdirecting rumors. People used to hang around all night in Kith looking for it. This was back before Kith became so dangerous at night... it was very amusing sometimes listening to the chatter of groups of rangers scattered throughout Kith trying to make a comprehensive ranger 'radar' net, and reporting to each other what they saw.. and telling stories since they were bored as heck.

Now I just wish I knew where/how to get that leaf the catman wants from EK...

At the lower levels, 25 and lower, this can be a tough quest, so take a group or someone at least lvl 30 with you. THe hardest part of his quest is to find the Ghoul Messenger in WK. When he comes up on track he is still tough to catch. For a sword that only takes some leg work, it is a great off hander for a young ranger.

Being a ranger enough? or do I need kith faction? just got the map at 39, and don't really need the sword other than to say that I have one of the most popular ranger only weapons in the game, hehe

I just killed him an hour ago, you dont need any help after level 30, JUST KYTE HIM, Sow yourself, snare him and use stinging swarm and ignite on him while you are running from him, i am level 35 and i took him out without getting hit P
I guess its the smartest that'll win, i fought him once before before i thought about kyting, he used goulroot and nearly killed me

I got this weapon farily easily, thanks to the help of a friendly ranger. I knew about this quest, and as soon as I entered WK, he was on track. I said the the GM was up, and I was hoping somone would kill him. I tracked him for half an hour (camoed), only a good 15 ft behind. He was pretty slow, BC I kept up while encumbered. A nice ranger killed him, and as he already had the SSoM, let me loot it...and a day later, a nice druid killed Grimfeather, who I was also tracking, and let me loot the RoI. I swear, druids and rangers must be the nicest people.

just goto the rivervale entrance and he should be on the track list from there names Morin Shadowbane:P

As a ranger lvl 30 (not twinked) I was not able to solo the Ghoul messenger. Not that is hits too much, but it has a lot of HP.

I had to ask a druid for help. He just casted a Damage shield on me and a few heal and it was ok.

I got this sword at level 11, and i am a ranger by the way. How? Some one was looking for a certain character in the zone and needed someone with track (here I come). Ran around the whole zone for like 45 minutes and no luck.Just walking around and i see the goul messenger running at me. He hits me once for like 45 hp, i start running like a scared little girl. But the person i was helping stepped in, took him like one minute to kill him(tough basterd!!), and he was lvl 41!! i asked if i could loot, he said that was cool. So i loot, we walk around a little more then we give up. To make the deal a even sweeter he gave me 40pp for my help and time. Thanks Velhak!

I managed to acquire this weapon last night on EMarr, at level 18. I was travelling west from Odus to Freeport, and then on to Faydwer. When I hit WK I did a /who ranger - and there was only 1 in the zone, me. I gave a (polite) /ooc asking to loot the GM if anyone killed it, and then camped the scarecrows for an hour or so. Then I recieved a /tell saying that the GM was slain over near the Undead Ruins, and I could have the loot if I made it before he rotted. Needless to say I put my head down and ran East like hell - tracking the whole way until I picked up the /teller. I arrived and looted the letter. My eternal thanks to the pair who killed him, a wolfform druid and a Barbarian; sadly I have forgotten their names. The druid even kindly provided me with a SoW for the long run to Kithicor. I arrived at midnight, so I had a good many drinks with the folks in Rivervale until the sun was up, then tracked Morin and recieved his blade, and the OrcImpaler quest...All in all, a fine night...

When I quested this sword I was a lvl 20 ranger and spent a week in the WK zone looking for the GM. Finally popped and had someone kill it for me. Since that Time I've been running through WK maybe 8 times and the GM's been on track 7 of them. Figures. Helped a young ranger in my guild (17) get this last night. Ran into the zone, sure enough he was up, tracked and killed him, guildie looted. Just thought it was ironic after spending so long looking for it when I needed it, noeit's like I'm a magnet, everytime I'm in zone so is he. Was not a tough battle for us, snared and blasted with ignite/melee combo. Took me down to a little more than 1/2 life, barely damaged my partner.

Picked him up on track almost right away zoning in from NK, I guess we were near those two merchant buildings, kinda NW of ruins, along the trail. Not sure what time it was. He seems to run from ruins up through the ogre camp.

When I talked to Morin he said that the Ghoul Messenger runs along the route from here to the Qeynos Hills. Dose this mean that he spawns in Highpass? I would like to know based on the fact that it is easier to set an ambush for his undead butt in highpass than it is to go running all over West Karrana trying to find him on the wide open plain.

I was running through WK OMW to Everfrost to kill Redwind, and someone had just killed the messanger. Asking around he runs by the orcs where Chief Goonda is almost always camped and most peeps will kill it and let you loot. Just hang around WK for a bit and the SSoM will be yours.
